A bit of suspended belief expected, but overall a pretty engrossing read, satisfactorily reminding us that social media has its definite drawbacks!
Follow Me is a paced past thriller that kept me guessing until the end. It was a bit creepy and definitely freaked me out even more than I already am about Social Media. I never like to "check in" to a place or post much of anything of my life on the internet and I am creeped out by webcams (yes mine is covered ALWAYS). This book just confirms to me why NOT to do those things! A nice read, I didn't want it to end! Thank you to Gallery Books and NetGalley for an ARC Copy in exchange for an honest review.
Immediately wanted to deleted all of my social media profiles after this. This one will keep you up and you will never guess the ending
I requested an ARC of this book after seeing some glowing reviews on Goodreads, but was a little let down by it. The premise is good enough -- an Instagram influencer ends up with a stalker who is able to insert herself into her life when she moves to Washington DC where he lives, and he can use technology to stalk her in ways never before possible.
In the forward, the author says she got the idea for the book after finding out about RATs and how easy it is to install one on an unsuspecting person's laptop if you get them to download an attachment. She explains that there are apparently networks of men who call these unknowing women who are being spied on through their webcams their "slaves" and even trade them with each other (ew). I honestly expected that to play a larger part in the book than it did. The stalker was able to do most of his damage on his own, thanks to Audrey's oversharing.
The story is told in the first person through the eyes of the beautiful (of course) influencer Audrey, her beautiful (of course) but awkward and self conscious lawyer friend Cat, and occasionally the stalker. When we are in his head, he is creepy and crazy and all of his relatives and people on the street are creeped out by him, yet we are supposed to believe that Audrey cannot tell anything at all is off about him.
The author also only introduces about 4 men in the whole book (even casually!) and it's obvious it's not 3 of them, so it would be nearly impossible to be surprised by who the guy is.
Lots of things were set up that I thought might end up being a nice twist, like Audrey is working on the social media for a creepy art display about the murder of a beautiful woman by her stalker. I thought maybe the artist would end up being secretly someone she was interacting with or a man or something interesting, but no, there was nothing unexpected there either.
None of the characters are likeable and it almost feels like it's designed to be candy for people who disapprove of influencers. Cat (the friend) is totally 2D and pathologically socially inept, and Audrey is self absorbed, shallow, and repeatedly says she couldn't get serious with the guy she hooks up with every night because he listens to Maroon 5. She judges another guy because he wears Vans (OMG!). Why not make her likeable? Barber gives her a few likeable traits like not wanting a man to rescue her, but it's like she's taking out her aggression on women she resents by writing these characters as so devoid of depth and humanity.
It was fun, but could have been a lot better.
I read a digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
This book kept me captivated from the beginning and I found it difficult to put down. I had chills with some of the scenes that her stalker was speaking about right up to the last page!
Audrey has built herself quite the fan base on her social media accounts with her endless posting about everything in her life. Audrey has just left the city that she loves for her dream job managing social media at a museum affiliated with the Smithsonian in DC. She knows only 2 people there, her friend awkward friend Cat and her ex boyfriend Nick who are not fans of each other. Audrey is trying to impress her boss and make new friends. She is also dealing with unwanted attention from her landlady’s grandson, a coworker and a mystery man who shows up at the museum in a closed exhibit, just to name a few. She soon realizes that she is being stalked and wonders if it could be someone she knows or one of hundreds of thousands of instagram followers. Has Audrey shared too much online and made herself vulnerable to the wrong person?
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Follow Me is a creepy story that mirrors reality with so much social media "influencers" out there displaying their life for millions to follow. Audrey has a huge following on social media and finally lands her dream job in Washington D.C. She moves there without knowing anyone except her college sorority sister Cat and her college boyfriend Nick.
The book is told from 3 perspectives: Audrey, Cat, and "Him" (Audrey's stalker who is following her on social media). Cat has a mysterious past and Nick seems somewhat obsessed with Audrey, so as a reader, we are constantly wondering whether either of them may have nefarious intentions with Audrey. While Audrey seems to attract the attention of anyone she meets, although she is really just an ordinary woman portraying a fabulous life online.
The author does a great job of pacing the story. It kept me riveted trying to figure out who was the one stalking Audrey. It's one of those books that will have you constantly checking the locks on your door and making sure your blinds are closed at night so no one can peep in. Who knows who may be lurking out there....
Instagram madness....
Anyone who has an instagram account will surely get some shivers after reading this book about the dangers of posting too much information. TMI
Audrey Miller had over a million subscribers (that is a lot of eyes!) The problem is that someone is watching her every move, following all her social media accounts and stories. This person knows where she lives, works and her favorite hang-out spots. Scary!
We get this mystery stalker's pov as he anticipates Audrey's every move. She begins to sense "someone" watching her, but brushes away concern. Well, she is a bit naive and learns quickly she should have been more cautious.
The pace is good and there are plenty of suspects to keep the guessing going until the end. While some happenings were definitely over the top, I still enjoyed the game of figuring out who this stalker was!
I would call this a light stalker, but cautionary tale. This was just my speed!
Thanks to Gallery Books and NG for my review copy! OUT on FEB 25, 2020
I quite enjoyed this one! How much do you share on social media? This book may make you rethink all of it . . .
This one features Audrey, who is an Instagram star with a million followers and she documents all her daily activities. Her professional life also involves social media, promoting exhibits at the Smithsonian. She’s so busy online, she doesn’t notice that someone is watching her every move. She’s recently moved to DC for this new job and trying to make a place for herself in a new city.
She’s reunited with an old college friend, Cat, and an ex-boyfriend, but soon she feels like she’s being watched all the time. Does she have a stalker?
The book has three narrators, Audrey, her friend Cat, and HIM – I was constantly trying to figure out who this was? Has Audrey met this person yet? Was it a man? This book moved at a fast pace and the tension builds towards a power-packed ending. I did not successfully guess the outcome in this one and for that it earns all 4 stars from me.
🚨🚨 REVIEW Comin’ In HOTTT❗️❗️🚨🚨
.
As I’m rounding out my 2019, I was excited to give Follow Me by Kathleen Barber a go🚦
.
And it held all the makings of a fun, quick, attention keeping—suck me into a vortex of a imaginary black hole🕳—read that would make me forget I was even engulfed in a book and not living Audrey’s (a socia media-attention whore-addict-protagonist) life❗️
Say that three times fast....📣
.
While not a new concept (Hello, I don’t want to brag or anything, but I had a stalker in the 7th grade—-full on legit follow me everywhere, hiding, lurking, and watching me from behind a pillar at the junior high dance crying silently because I didn’t want to dance with any boys....what was I saying❓🙄) its such a fun and probably a little too close to home potential horror story for many who today feel the need to share every second of their lives via the inter-webs 🕸
.
I mean we all know THAT girl...every guy wants to be WITH her and every girl wants to BE her...and she’s too busy posing perfectly trying to get the attention of someone else...likeable, yet insecure...YIKES- she’s PERFECT for a stalker 👀 who follows her every minute by minute IG story
.
So the thing about #FollowMe is it’s believable. It’s annoying. It’s enraging. It’s consumable. It’s actual REALITY today. And it’s flat out creepy AF😬
.
And I both rooted FOR and AGAINST Audrey, as well as other characters because like YOU and I, they are authentic, yet flawed....you know, cruise behind the back alley and stand hours peeping through a window watching you sleep💤 FLAWED...you know, the NORMAL stuff😬
.
Honestly, I LOVED this book that doesn’t even come out until February 25, 2020❗️
.
Thanks @gallerybooks , Kathleen Barber, and @netgalley for giving me this #ARC in exchange for an honest review——it felt like candy🍭

Where are my You fans at?! If you like creepy and unsettling stalker stories you have GOT to read this one! Have you ever thought about exactly what you share on social media? Most of us post somewhere online daily, but have you ever really thought about the dangers of over sharing online? Or the fact that if any of your accounts are public you have no idea who may really be watching your every move? CREEPY AF I told you! If this book doesn’t make you think about your own online presence I don’t know what will.
The whole story has a really menacing vibe and you hear from Audrey, her best friend Cat and Him, her obsessed stalker. The chapters from Him were chilling, I always love getting a glimpse inside the mind of someone who is disturbing and this guy was terrifying. People being watched never fails to scare the shit out of me and Barber did an amazing job of bringing that fear to life. This is definitely another page turner from the author and only solidifies her place on my list of must read authors!
2.5/5 I don't know, maybe I'm too old to really appreciate this book- or at least not as social media obsessed as you would have to be to find this interesting. Basically, the story follows a vapid and uninteresting woman who spends all of her time posting filtered pictures and creating "stories" for her online feeds. I honestly can't imagine what she could find so much to post about since it seemed her only hobby was herself. There are also a bunch of pretty gross guys in her life. One of them is stalking her. Who could it be? I don't know, but if you post everything online that you do, it's not that hard to track you down, just saying. Overall, I just didn't care much about the woman and
This book was really something else. Absolutely fantastic and I couldn't put it down. The characters were all intriguing, but none were completely likeable. You found yourself partly rooting for them, and partly thinking they deserve everything they get. Audrey - true victim or deserving air-headed target? Cat - is being pitiful just Audrey's perspective or is it an accurate judgment of who Cat really is? Nick - lovesick puppy dog of an ex or jealous psycho? Max - wonderful new boyfriend or long-time stalker? Conner - obsessive creep or just an awkward guy?
Who is Audrey's stalker? Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was thrown for another loop. Way to keep me on my toes. Kathleen Barber has hit yet another one right out of the park and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next.
Overall, this was a fantastic, can't-put-it-down read. But may I make one suggestion? Next time, how about fewer references to the freakin' animal crackers?!?
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Follow Me is the latest book by Kathleen Barber. Follow Me is all the more terrifying because with today's technologies it could be a tale ripped from the headlines. Ms Barber moves the story right along, throwing in edge of your seat moments. I want to thank Net Galley and Simon & Schuster for an early copy to review.
Follow Me by Kathleen Barber was a great read! Couldn't put it down until the very end! Would love to read more by Kathleen Barber.
How much sharing your life online is too much? Audrey loves Instagram and she posts everything of her life to there. Audrey moves from New York to DC and reconnects with her college friend Cat. Cat is a lawyer and doesn't use Instagram or Facebook and doesn't understand why Audrey has to post everything! Audrey oversharing has many followers but one may want to cause Audrey harm. The story is told in 3 points of view and I love that! I love getting all the important points of view from their own perspective. This book questions how much you should share of your life with complete strangers in today's world of constant oversharing. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
Unique premise, though it admittedly focused on a part of life today that doesn't entice me much: social media. Still, the plot was creepy enough to keep me interested. Worth reading, especially for 20- and 30-somethings.
*Thanks to both the publisher and the author for allowing me to read an ARC of this book free of charge, in exchange only for an honest review."
I could not put this one down! I love thrillers about social media. It's such a modern twist on timeless themes about obsession and stalking. And this book was one of the best examples I've read. It's told from three perspectives--Audrey, a navel-gazing Instagram influencer, her awkward friend Cat, and "Him," Audrey's nameless stalker. Audrey has just moved to DC and reconnected with Cat, as well as intensifying her stalker's obsession, since he lives there as well. The tension slowly ratchets up, and there are numerous men in Audrey's life who are potential candidates for the man who is obsessed with her. I was totally hooked on the story and highly recommend it.
A quick & clever story - a few good twists that kept this one from being too predictable. Not sure I'd go out of my way to push this into someone's hands BUT if asked, I would say it's a solid suspense novel. Fun & dramatic, a guilty pleasure that's easy to devour.
Thanks to Netgalley and Gallery Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Audrey, an instagram personality with over a million followers, moves from NYC to Washington DC for a new job opportunity. An old college friend, Cat, and her old college boyfriend, Nick, are the only people she knows in DC. She doesn’t know that a guy who has been obsessed with her since she became an online personality years ago thinks it is fate that she is now in his city and begins stalking her.
I thought this was a really good and easy read. I was into it from the start. I liked the characters and the modern social media premise. Audrey was self absorbed but not so much that I was rooting against her. There were several people that could have been her stalker and there were some twists I didn’t see coming at the end. I loved it.
Another suspenseful book about social media? Yes, please!
I really enjoyed this fast-paced suspenseful novel about an Instagram influencer named Audrey Miller. Everyone envied her, but with love also comes hate and someone is out to get her. Audrey gets a new job and relocates to Washington, D.C. and, of course, shares it all on social media. Then, strange things start happening. Someone who has been following her online for years is now close enough to her to make dreams become reality.
Told from multiple points of view, this book will leave you guessing as to who her "secret admirer" is.
Thank you to Netgalley, Gallery Books and Kathleen Barber for the digital ARC I received in exchange for a review! This title will be released on Feb. 25, 2020 but you can preorder now!
