This is actually some scary story about cyberstalking.
Told from three points of view, we meet Audrey a digital influencer who's up and coming and just moved to Washington where an old friend now lives. Her friend Cat, who's now a lawyer doing he best to become partners at her law firm. And the stalker, who falls in love with Audrey at first sight since she reminds him so much of another girl he once loved. And He could be anyone.
One of the great things about the book is obviously that we don't know who the stalker is, we just know he exists. He does confirm most of his deeds through his chapters, but I wish he wouldn't. How fun would it be not to know if it was really he who did this or that? Also, the thing about he could be anyone is too forced on us, Audrey and Cat suspects everyone, all the time. Of course a girl alone in some unknown city will be suspicious of stuff but I don't think it would have been to that point. I actually found it silly at times. And she was so alert but only found out who it was by accident, instead of while actively investigating—she tried this too with little success.
This is a scary topic per ser and in some parts the book gets it right. But in most of them it fell flat, simply because it was much telling. I know I'm repeating myself but this is a percent of how much the book did this—we didn't need to hear every single page that the character felt as if she were being followed. I'm not even getting to the point of how dumb she was because the gaslighting on Audrey was also there, and for that kudos to the writer for finding a way to make her not go to the authorities.
This book has its perks too, don't worry. The conclusion was mostly unexpected—although too lenient on the stalker, almost forgiving of his behavior—and actually made me think, so I can't say the book is all that forgettable. We had some other twists that I enjoyed; though nothing that big, it got me to keep turning pages. Moreover, it didn't feel like a telltale of how we should protect our privacy, despite being sold as such to make readers more scared (I know I was very freaked out by my webcam while reading).
I think that's a positive point not to blame the victim. This person since the first chapter had been stalking and abusing his victims, the internet only made it so he found someone farther from his social circle but it didn't make him do it.
The characters here aren't likable but it's part of the intention, make you doubt the main characters and everyone altogether. At the same time, they never bothered me beyond what the writer wanted me to feel for them.
This is an average thriller, that could have been more inspired, but you'll probably be second-guessing yourself even if you find out who the culprit is.
This could be THAT FB friend who posts everything, the one you think is crazy for sharing the details of her life. Barber brings this take to life as you sit on the edge of your seat.
This really reminded me of Caroline Knepnes' "You". Very compelling read...I mean stay up way too late on a work night kind of read. Book hangovers are real people! Loved and connected to the characters in a way I found surprising. The writing style really spoke to me. I was so absorbed that when I did close the book I would think about what the characters were doing like it was real. I loved getting so absorbed in a book. Cant rave about this one enough.
Social, Media. Social Influencer. These terms have become part of everyday vocabulary. However, this opens the door for not only more likes, comments and followers, but also for more stalkers. Follow Me by Kathleen Barber shows what can happen when you open your world to everyone else. There is intrigue, suspense and creepiness as we try to figure out who is stalking Audrey. The story is told from the view point of several different people, including the stalker. If you are looking for a book to hold your attention, creep you out and make you think twice about social media and your laptop, this is the book for you. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this ARC.
Excellent! This book was very quick st grabbing my attention and made sure it kept it throughout the entire book! Riveting, engrossing, shocking, and unputdownable! One of the top books I read this year, which is no easy accomplishment, because I read a ton of amazing books. This book really was well written and done in a way that had me needing more and more! Highly, highly recommend!!
Will make sure I buzz it up! Must preorder today!!
OBSESSED! Thank you so much for this ARC!
I seriously found myself reading this book every chance I got. This was a great suspense novel and really had me guessing up until the end. What a surprise ending! Really enjoyed reading from different points of view.
Definitely highly recommend this book to all the mystery lovers out there - especially those who are active IG users, really makes you think!
This book had me hanging on all the way until the very end!! I love the realistic aspect of the online presence and the cons of social media. The format of the chapters were perfect with how they flipped between the point of views of the different characters. I was dying to know who the obsessed fan was!!! Great story and extremely suspenseful. I really enjoyed it.
All in all, this one was a wild and crazy ride, although it began to drag quite a bit towards the end. Definitely kept you guessing about who “Him” was. I did enjoy the twist at the end and the way the author built up the suspense by drawing out the characters’ complete train of thought at certain points. Really put the reader in their minds.
WOW! What a wicked and fun ride Follow Me turned out to be! I loved all aspects of this story of Audrey, Cat, and Social Media. Audrey posts every event and even non-event of her life on the internet, and has an unbelievable number of followers. Who could be surprised when she has a mystery follower who has bad intent?
This story unfolds in a back and forth manner, which seems so popular now, between three main characters. It moves quickly, and I was compelled to finish the book in record time. The ending did not disappoint!
Highly recommend Follow Me to all mystery lovers, especially those of us who enjoy our Social Media!
It was hard not to consume this book in great big gulps. There were enough clues to keep you guessing at who was stalking Audrey. This is a cautionary tale about how public the internet is, something worth thinking about.
Told from alternating points of view (by chapter) we see through the eyes of Audrey, a social media "influencer" with over a million Instagram followers, her college sorority sister Cat, a hard-working lawyer trying to make partner who needs Audrey's friendship far more than Audrey needs hers, and "Him", a stalker obsessed with Audrey. When Audrey gets a new job and moves to DC, her stalker realizes that he might be able to actually meet her and they can finally be together the way fate intends them to be. Cat is thrilled to have a friend other than work colleagues, and Audrey is excited for a fresh start.
This book was well-written and gripping from the very beginning. The characters felt real (for fiction) and there were twists I did not see coming. This book kept me turning pages and wondering until the very end. 4 stars instead of 5 because the ending was just too much - I was disappointed and felt like the author was trying too hard to twist things up and keep the reader from guessing. And,<spoiler>the fact that Audrey didn't actually learn anything from the whole crazy experience just frustrated me - she was a stronger character throughout the book and I didn't buy that she'd not change at least a few of her ways</spoiler>.
Still, I definitely recommend this book!
Disclaimer: I received an electronic copy of this book from the publisher through #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to Bianca Salvant @ SimonandSchuster and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this precautionary tale of folks who put their Whole life on social media!! You Never know exactly Who is 'following' you, how close they feel to you, and How close they Really Are!!!
Audrey basically lives just to post amazing photos of her life-likes,where she is,what she is doing, and how she feels about anything she comes across,- on her Instagram feed. Even when she has to set things up so they look great, when all around is chaos...But when she begins to feel someone watching her, footsteps in her alley, noises outside her bedroom window, she starts to become a little spooked!
Someone is completely Obsessed with her, and when he learns of a device that turns her computer into a program he can watch 24-7, problems become bigger and Scarier!!! A bunch of flowers on her doorstep..with the flowers Cut off, leaving Only the Stems...
A story that is Current in today's society, and Will make you pause before you hit that button on Your computer!!!
This review is of my honest thoughts and feelings after reading this intriguing story!!

"Everyone wants new followers…until they follow you home."
This is a great one line review I read to get me to read the book
A cautionary tale that NO ONE IS LISTENING to about the electric noose we have put around our own necks.
The "water is heating up fellow frogs", better read on now!
Follow Me by Kathleen Barber Media Darling, Audrey, has over a million followers, a new dream job; a BFF - Cat; ex-lover, Nick; a dreary basement apartment with a sleazy, creepy neighbor - Ryan; a fantastic new boyfriend - Max, and oh yes, a Stalker. Fast paced, suspenseful and twisty tale warning of the dangers of social media postings.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
Another hit from Kathleen Barber! I really enjoyed her last book (Are You Sleeping), which focused on how social media can add complexities and nuances to our modern lives. Follow Me also looks at how people's worlds have changed thanks to social media.
Audrey, the lead character of the book, is beautiful, and, from everything one sees on her social media, successful. She has a new, exciting job helping create social media buzz and content for the hottest and edgiest new art installation at a hip museum in Washington, DC. From outward appearances, it looks like she has it all - the looks, the job, the friends, the boyfriend....but what is really going on behind the scenes?
The reality is that Audrey is self-serving and often careless with her friendships and relationships. She sometimes sees friends and boyfriends as simply a backdrop in her Instagram-perfect life, taking advantage of people's kindness and desire to be around her. Audrey is somewhat clueless about how the people in her life feel about her.
All of this is about to change when a stalker - possibly multiple stalkers - starts to follow Audrey's every move. Who is this person - or people - following her? What do they want from her? Perhaps the most dangerous people in Audrey's life are those who are the closest to her.
What I loved about this book is how the tension builds page by page. This was truly a classic mystery with a modern social media twist. I read this SO quickly, which is kind of a bummer because now I have to wait for another new Barber book to come out!
Thanks to Kathleen Barber, Gallery/Pocket Books, and NetGalley for an advance reader copy of Follow Me.
This was a quick and easy read. Audrey has established a huge social media following by posting all aspects of her life. She seems to have it all, but as the story unfolds you see that although many are taken with her self absorbed antics there is also a cast of characters that might have a hidden agenda. Soon after moving from New York to DC, Audrey has landed a great new job, reconnected with an old best friend, and secured a pretty scary stalker... A stalker that knows everything about her due to her excessive social media posts.
Kathleen Barber did a great job of reminding us about the dangers of sharing too much online. She also created a relatively unreliable narrator, some details meant to distract the reader (they worked) and a twist that I didn't see coming.
4 stars- thank you to #netgalley and #kathleenbarber for a fun read. Now I'm going to go put all my social media profiles to private...
I loved this book! The characters were very developed and I loved the depth and relationship between Cat and Audrey. There were many possibilities of who "him" was so I was guessing until the end which was fun and kept the book interesting. I loved "Are you Sleeping" and am equally impressed with Kathleen Barber's newest novel. I"m a fan!
This was my kind of thriller. Told from various perspectives including a creepy sociopath, I was hooked from page one. I had thought it would end differently which is always a plus in my book.
Special thanks to Gallery Books for providing our copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.
Nothing gets me more creeped out than a good old stalking story. I'm for real. Is there anything that is scarier than someone looking in on your personal space? Watching you from afar, collecting information about you, taking pictures, breaking into your house... Obsessions, delusions, lies, etc. BRB I'm off to take a cold shower.
I LOVED Kathleen's debut so I had super high hopes for Follow Me. Let's just say I'm a happy camper. Once again, Kathleen delivers thrilling goods. Follow Me is intense, captivating, creepy & a total binge-worthy read. I'm over the moon about that!
Basically, if you like creepy thrillers, this is right up your alley. Kathleen does a great job building up the suspense in a realistic & voyeuristic manner. Her author's note at the beginning really sets the stage for a reality driven & modern suspense novel. It made me rethink the way I do my social media.
Social. Media.
Influencer.
What kind of doors does the uber blogger and influencer lifestyle open? Wow - this book! I finished it one night when I couldn't sleep and could not put it down.
Audrey has a million followers. Which one is her stalker??
So many characters to suspect, and when I thought I was closer to the answers, I was wrong! Great thriller, mystery, suspense and a good lesson about opening our lives up with no worries. Read it!!
