My Pet Slime by Courtney Sheinmel is a fun, light book and the illustrations were beautiful. I read this with my daughters and they LOVED it and can't wait for book 2. Great characterizations and perfect writing for ages 8/9 and under. This book was so much fun and the slime recipe included made this book more of an experience than just a read. We plan to try the recipe soon. This book was engaging, fun, and light. We loved it.

My Pet Slime by Courtney Sheinmel and illustrated by Renée Kurilla is an absolutely adorable middlegrade novel about a young girl who is allergic to animals but still desperately wants a pet. All of her friends have pets of their own and it seems so unfair that she cannot have any herself. And so, master slime-maker that she is, young Piper decides to make a pet for herself - out of slime! If only the little purple slime creature she made were actually real.

If you're looking for a simple and deeply sweet book to read to your kids, this one is a fantastic option. Not only is the story itself great, but it's punctuated with some of the cutest artwork I have ever seen. When Piper's pet slime comes to life, the little creature she calls Cosmo gets up to all sorts of mischief as she adjusts to her new life with a real pet!

This book is exceptionally cute and so much fun that my niece very quickly became a huge fan. And honestly, this is pretty impressive considering the fact that my mother and sister can't really get her to sit long enough to listen to almost any story. I can definitely see myself buying this book for some of my students in the future, too, which is an added plus.

All in all, I'm pretty fond of this one.

My Pet Slime is the first in a new series of early chapter books. It was a cute story, but as it is introducing a new series and characters, it had parts that might be a bit boring to young readers. Piper has always wanted a pet but is allergic to everything. The kids at Table B are talking about Show and Tell and that they should all talk about their pets. Piper doesn't have a pet and is a bit down. When she goes home, she makes slime to play with and models it into a pet to play with. When she accidentally opens some space dust she received fro her grandmother, an employee of Astroblast Explorers, it comes to life but can only be seen by children. She names him Cosmo and brings him to school. When she checks on him after lunch, he is missing. Piper accuses her classmate, Claire of taking Cosmo and they work together to try and find him. This seems like it will be a good series for young readers. Piper is in grade three with normal kid problems. She can be a bit naughty and not listen and her parents consequence her which is nice to see. She has issues with some of her classmates, but is learning to deal with them. I think young readers will enjoy reading about Piper, Cosmo and her friends. This book ends on a cliffhanger which will entice readers to read the next one to see what happens. The back of the book also include a recipe for slime, so you can make some at home to play with and create your own Cosmo, without the space dust.

While clearly a set-up for a series, and not an actual full adventure, this is still quite a warming read for the very young. A girl who's allergic to all furry animals, and therefore jealous of all the pets mentioned at her class Show and Tell, fabricates a gloppy cute thing out of home-made slime (recipe included). Only, due to her household not being the usual girl's household, something else is on hand that can actually bring the slime alive, and form Cosmo, the slime entity that's a nice cuddly friend to the girl, but that switches off and ends up just slime whenever an adult is present. The book does suffer a little by so much of it being Cosmo's 'birth scenes', but there's enough character and drama to make it worth a read. This also serves as a launch to what seems on this evidence to be a strong series – now the origin story is done the other books can be free to be more dramatic still. It's highly unlikely hokum, but I remember the kind of Reithian, improving children's films Britain made as TV movies in the 1970s and 1980s, and this has a kind of naive charm that matched the best of those.

Show and tell is coming up for Piper’s 3rd grade class. Many of her classmates talked about bringing in their pets, which just made Piper sad. Piper is allergic to just about every animal so she can’t have any pets. Her dad is busy with a tricky part of his book when she gets home, so Piper makes herself a slime pet to help herself feel happier. That night the slime accidentally gets mixed with the space dust Piper’s grandmother brought her from her latest excursion into space and something very unexpected happens. When a tragedy happens before show and tell and Piper suspects foul play on the part of a curious classmate, Piper’s new slime buddy may be ruined forever.

I thought this was going to be a graphic novel but there are just occasional full color illustrations. Those are very cute and will attract readers. Piper is a likable main character. She has her faults, but she is quick to apologize and make things right. The topics of wanting a pet, home life, and getting along with classmates are all very relevant to many readers. But I’m not so sure many readers will have a living slime pet or a grandmother who regularly travels space. It’s a good mix of familiar and imaginary. It’s also a nice light scifi story that’s a good border read for readers riding the line between lower grade fiction and middle grade fiction. But you might want to wait and make sure you have book two on hand when you read this one because the last chapter introduces a new and more puzzling mystery to be solved in the next book. Now I’m so curious! Recommended to readers ready to move from lower grade fiction to middle grade fiction, scifi fans, and slime lovers.

First up thank you for allowing me to read this book. But sorry, we just didn't click. I have tried to read this book over the past months since I got it, and today I got a bit further, but I am just not into it. Maybe I would like it more in a physical form instead of reading it on my PC, if I ever find it I will definitely try again.
Lovely art!

My Pet Slime is the first in what will be a series of beginning reader's chapter books. I found it to be a fun read and think that kids will too.

Piper has always wanted a pet but is allergic to everything. It is talk about your pet time at show and tell which makes not having what she so desperately wants even harder. Using her ingenuity Piper fashions a pet from slime. Amazingly when space dust from her grandmother, an employee of Astroblast Explorers, accidentally lands on the slime, it comes to life but can only be seen by children.

Piper names her pet, Cosmo. She brings him to school but then he is not in her backpack when she checks. Piper accuses her frenemy, Claire, of taking Cosmo. Readers will enjoy finding out what happens.

The story ends on a cliffhanger when Piper's grandmother is missing. That event should get readers interested in reading the next book.

The back of the book includes a recipe for slime and some facts on a particular slime discovered by scientists that can forage for food.

This is a nicely illustrated chapter book that will encourage young readers to enjoy books. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book in exchange for an honest review.
