Unfortunately this book was not my cup of tea. I ended up putting it down at about 30% as I just could not get into it.

Sarah Pinborough peels back the curtain to the secret lives of a wealthy upper class southern social clique in Dead To Her. We get to see a peek of what it’s like to both be born into and fight your way into the most respected and wealthy clique of savannah, Georgia. Since propriety is everything to these socialites, they’re all harboring their own kind of secrets, both big and small. The whole story begins when the very young and foreign Kiesha marries the very old and widowed, William and our characters worlds get a little bumpy.
I fell victim to my own expectation for Sarah Pinborough on this book. It was far more “real (very wealthy and old) housewives of Savannah Georgia” and far less supernatural-weird thriller that I had come to expect of her. It was solid domestic thriller that takes place within the socialite structure of this small southern town but I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it never did. What was strange to me was that the author put in more than one potentially supernatural element and decided to give it a logical explanation and I don’t know why. I wanted that crazy unexplainable twist I’ve come to know is coming from a Sarah Pinborough book. All that aside, it was a good story but I could have gone without the repetitive sex scenes put there only for the woman to say (once again) how much she can’t believe she’s lying next to a liar/someone she doesn’t love.
I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting such a vanilla domestic suspense novel from Sarah Pinborough. After Behind Her Eyes (I mean, who would ever guess body snatchers in a thriller??) and Cross Her Heart (scary magician's dungeon? Cool, cool) I was expecting weird. With the voodoo subplot, Pinborough sets us up for her usual blend of thriller + weird, but when it falls through, I was left disappointed. Instead, this is domestic suspense with a lot of unhappy sex scenes and a total lack of Pinborough's usual knack for taking a reader completely by surprise. The writing itself is good and solid, but I simply expected more from her.

While Dead to Her kept me turning the pages, once I was finished, I concluded that I really didn't like this book very much. Every single character is awful. All of them. Every one of them is fueled by their greed or narcissism. Once the main event occurred, I did not care at all who committed the crime, because the victim was a terrible person, and any of these characters deserve jail time for one reason or another. The lack of redeeming qualities in ANY of the characters just made this book unenjoyable.
This one was a little awkward for me. The characters weren’t likeable at all, not even remotely redeemable even if you wanted them to be. The voodoo/ black magic aspect was just a little too out there (and not at all even necessary towards the plot). It was a pretty slow takeoff and I didn’t ever reach the point that I just couldn’t wait to pick it up again, I also felt like the picture it gave of Savannah was not what I have really gotten from the Deep South city (and yes, I am definitely from a Deep South area). It just felt off to me for a lot of reasons overall. It wasn’t poorly written. It just didn’t do much for me as a reader.
Ok so I loved Behind Her Eyes and the twist at the end and so that made me love Sarah Pinborough. Knowing how she writes and that there will definitely be twists, I requested this book from Netgalley. I have to say that if you are a fan of her then you will like this book as well. There are times the characters are annoying and are the “elite” of Savannah but I also think this is necessary because Marcie, the main character, fought hard to become the “elite” and wants to fight to stay there. There are a few thrills and then a few shocks.
I say give it a try and get past about chapter 3 before you put it down.
Having had mixed feelings about Pinborough's prior work, I had to go into this novel with an open mind. We are promised a thriller, but a weird black magic plotline midway through makes it utterly unbelievable and less thrilling than it would have been if the author had just stuck to realism.
Wow I enjoyed this book! I'm a big Sarah Pinborough fan and I liked this one a lot. Very quick read, really atmospheric (I could almost feel the humidity), and just enjoyable all around. Thank you so much for the ARC.
Why, oh why do I keep doing this to myself?? I was in what felt like the minority by not enjoying the RIDICULOUS twist in Behind Her Eyes. For some reason I keep picking up the author's books anyway! I suppose that means she is doing something right, even if it is just the blurbs vs the actual book. This is my third and theoretical final book by this author. We just don't mesh well. It's possible that I could potentially pick up another if I really needed some brain mush/ filler reading.
Sarah Pinborough is back with another unique domestic thriller! The first half was a bit of a slow start, but it really picked up in the second half. This was a unique thriller (hard to do lately) as it added a light element of magic that balances the line between realistic and believable. I really enjoyed this!!

You know the old saying, “What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive", that fits this book perfectly. Jason Maddox and his wife Marcie both have their own secrets. Keisha Radford is the great William Rasford’s sexy new wife. She enters the group of friends with a whirlwind, she too has a few secrets of her own. It seems almost everyone has something they’re hiding.
I really liked this book, all the characters meshed together very well but there wasn’t any edge of the seat, heart thumping moments until almost the end of the book. That being said, the build up was very methodical and kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning. Thank you Netgalley for an advanced copy, 3.5 stars.
Old money marries some thirsty women, but just how far will these women go? Marcie has already managed to steal Jason away from his first wife before she married him for his riches. Keisha, the newest wife belonging to the old boys’ club, has no issue with her new geriatric husband dying off as a result of too much sex. But when Marcie and Keisha start spending more time together, they’re finding an attraction they weren’t expecting. Throw in a poisoning and some serious back-stabbing, along with some crazy voodoo that keeps popping up, and no one is feeling very secure in their future. I found Behind Her Eyes by Pinborough to be an excellent book with an ending I never saw coming, so maybe I had extra high hopes for this book. It wasn’t bad, by any means, but there did seem to be a lot of extras thrown into this book that either weren’t needed or didn’t fully add up.
If you're looking for a book that leaves you mind-blown and in shock, then this is the book for you.
"Dead To Her" has high amounts of drama, secrets, bad juju, voodoo, scandal, and much more.
Meet Keisha, William Radford IV's new second wife, that he's just brought back from London. Nobody can take their eyes off of her especially Jason Maddox, Marcie's husband.
Meet Marcie, the second wife of Jason Maddox. She's somewhat new to the club of the Savannah elite.
Old money, older ties, and even older secrets are in this club of elite.
Marcie thinks Keisha is her biggest threat but there's an even bigger threat she needs to worry about, especially with her big secret she has hidden in the ceiling of her dressing room
I will admit the beginning of this book did start out slow for me, but it picked up about a fourth of the way in and never slowed down from there. I loved how I was never able to guess who was the mastermind behind everything, the one that was pulling all the puppet strings. And the ending, oh my god, you will NEVER see it coming. Do you remember how creative and compelling "Behind Her Eyes" ended? Well, "Dead To Her" is even more shocking and will leave you blindsided. Get ready to read til 4 in the morning because this book is that good.
If you love Sarah Pinborough's other novels and love books that leave you speechless, then you will love "Dead To Her".
"Dead To Her" comes out February 11th,2020.

Hard to know what to say about this book, i kept reading it and wondering what was the point of it, many unlikeable characters and an only somewhat interesting twist and it took too long to get there. didn't like the vodoo part of it at all
Previously, I’ve read Pinborough’s BEHIND HER EYES (loved it)and I have several of her earlier horror fiction titles to read as well. I truly enjoyed my time with this book. The author proves that complex characters, multi-threaded story lines, and the ability to tell a damn good story are all sharply honed skills; she wields them well.
Marcie and Keisha are by far my favorite characters here. Straight on, they are developed and interesting, but that’s just the surface. There is a host of people I loved to dislike in this book and there’s quite an array of diversity.
Sex, intrigue, and hidden pasts make this book come alive. There are quite a lot of threads to keep straight; I think they’re pulled together nicely at the end. Pinborough remains a favorite author. Read this book, be prepared to clutch your pearls, and grab a stiff drink. This is a fun one.
I read this book because I remember being fascinated by the big twist in Sarah Pinborough's previous novel, BEHIND HER EYES, and I wanted to see if she could shock me again. The answer to that is, yes, sort of. While some readers felt like the twist in BEHIND HER EYES came out of left field, I thought it was brilliant. Well, now that I know what to expect from this author, I'm a little harder to shock. While I wasn't totally surprised by all the twists and turns in the plot (and there are LOT of them), I still enjoyed watching the story unfold.
The characters in this book are not nice people. In fact, they're all pretty rotten, including the protagonist Marcie, the second wife of a wealthy man who's #1 fear is losing her husband and status. She feels threatened by new wife of her husband's boss. Keisha is a beautiful black Englishwoman that everyone is talking about, and Marcie worries that her husband will soon fall prey to Keisha's charms.. But then something happens (and I won't say what), but it turns the story on its head. And then another something happens. And then another something. Pinborough excels at keeping the plot interesting.
While it was hard to invest in the characters, who sometimes border upon being parodies, I did enjoy the book. I was anxious to see how everything played out, and I never got bored.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a review copy in exchange for my honest opinions.
This author has be shook with every book she writes. I never see the crazy twist coming. And this was so full of drama I didn’t know what the heck was going on! And I loved it!
This book is set around the Savannah elite, and Marcie and Keisha, 2 women who come from nothing marry rich men within this circle. Add in some black magic and you know there will be elements of sorcery and witchery. I'm not particularly interested in voodoo so mentions of that lost my interest. However, if you were turned off by the ending of her first book, rest assured that this one isn't quite as unrealistic. However, there was so much craziness with the characters and the plot, I had to keep reading till the final reveal.
I enjoyed reading this mystery, but I don't think it's one that will stay with me. One of those situations where I hate all of the characters. If you can't get into a story where there's no one to root for, this is not the book for you. For me, that's not usually a problem, but I didn't find enough depth in these unlikely characters to really care about them.
But I think Pinborough created a pretty awesome sense of place. The story takes place in Savannah, GA, among a group of uber-wealthy socialites. I don't know much about this community in real life, but found the depiction entirely believable.
Most of Pinborough's novels (as far as I can tell) are 95% mystery and 5% supernatural, and this was no exception.
It was a fun read.

This was, from the start, a page-turner. It follows Marcie, a woman in her late-twenties, who came from nothing and now is living the life of the extremely rich, thanks to her marriage to Jason, a wealthy lawyer who left his first wife to be with her. But, in the south, old money, privilege, and faith are of utmost importance, and Marcie exudes none of these traits as "the other woman".
However, when Jason's old boss, William, arrives home from Europe with a new, stunning 21-year old black wife, named Keisha, Marcie hopes that all the negative attention on her will let up and move onto Keisha. She's not so lucky. Despite her naivety and wild streak, Keisha is warmed up to quickly...most noticeably by Marcie's husband, Jason. To what lengths will Marcie go to in order to save her marriage and lifestyle?
In this suspenseful novel, Pinborough weaves infidelity, dark secrets, and murder together to create a fast-paced book that'll have you guessing until the very end. Highly recommend.
