At this point in her life, Marcie Maddox, has firmly established herself as the hot, younger second wife to her successful husband, Jason.
In their posh Savannah community, replete with sumptuous mansions and a country club lifestyle, image is everything. Marcie appears to have it all and she feels that way, most days.
The older, blue blooded women they socialize with have come to accept her and include her in their luncheons and tennis dates, but Marcie will always feel a bit like a second class citizen around them. She can't help it.
When Jason's boss, the wealthy, recently widowed, William Radford IV, returns from a trip to London with a much younger, sexy as hell, second wife on his arm, the whole of Savannah society gets thrown for a loop. Marcie especially.
She's no longer the youngest, or the most supple for that matter. The way Jason devours the new Mrs. Radford, Keisha, with his eyes, makes Marcie's skin crawl.
Keisha is brazen in a way that would be refreshing if it wasn't so shocking to their social norms. The way she plays housewife to the old coot, while also being sure to flirt with Marcie's husband, what exactly is she after?
After Jason asks her to befriend Keisha, Marcie learns a lot more about the girl than she bargained for!
The ladies quickly become two peas in a pod, but their friendship soon threatens everything Marcie has worked so hard for.
Full of secrets, deceptions and a touch of Southern voodoo and superstitions, this book had me flipping the pages at a rate to set my fingers on fire!
I felt this was completely unique, full of unlikable characters and drama fit for daytime programming.
While I had a ton of fun reading this, I can see how it might not work for everyone. I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending, but things can't always work out how we would choose.
I will definitely remember this one, that's for sure.
Thank you so much to the publisher, William Morrow Books, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I appreciate it so much!
I have read all of Pinboroughs books and have loved them all! This one was no different.
Dead to her had everything I want in a thriller. It had lies, deceitfulness, betrayal and secrets. I found it to be an enjoyable and creative read with fascinating characters and exciting plot with good twists and has you reading on late into the night.
Although I loved this book I will say the only downfall was there were a few parts that dragged on longer than it should. But stick with it because it is still a great novel and worth every word read.
I will always love this author's books and I will definitely be telling other book lovers about this book.
2.5/5
Do you ever read a book and really like the first half and then the second half everything just kind of falls apart? That’s what happened for me here unfortunately, I was definitely interested in the first half and then after that things just got weird and while I like weird stuff sometimes, this time it just didn’t work for me at all. I found it to be predictable and just slightly annoying with a bunch a stuff that felt like it was added in just for the sake of it.
Ok so even though this one wasn’t great for me I do think that a certain type of reader would like this. If you like unlikable characters with secrets and domestic drama, this one has all of that. If you like a strong atmosphere, this one had a great one. (That was actually one of the things that kept me reading) If you are interested in voodoo and black magic, this one had that too. It’s also pretty sexy and a bit tawdry so if that’s your thing, check it out. For me, all of that together was messy and blah and left me disappointed in the end, I wanted more.
Marcie had an affair with Jason, but now she's his new wife. She's married into the high society life, and she wants to keep her place in it. When Jason's boss, William, brings home a new, young wife, Marcie feels threatened. Jason starts acting sketchy, and Marcie thinks the worst.
A fun thriller that starts off with drama that leads to murder. Told with multiple points of view - Marcie and Keisha. Marcie was the young new wife in the social circle until Keisha came along. Marcie has become accustomed to the high-class lifestyle, but everything isn't perfect between her and Jason. Keisha is William's new wife, and it's pretty clear she's in it for the money. Marcie and Keisha are second wives and trophy wives, and both have secrets from their pasts.
This novel has unlikable characters, secrets, betrayals, voodoo, and a delicious ending. The characters are unlikable, but they're enjoyable to read about. The southern setting of Savannah is fantastic. A great read for fans of domestic thrillers.
I received a free digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Sarah Pinborough is an author who has been on my TBR forever, and the amazing cover coupled with the blurb made me know that Dead to Her was going to be my first read of hers. This book was such a pleasant surprise; I don’t think I’ve found a Thriller this hilarious since SCREAM hit the big screen in 1996. (Yep. I’m that old.)
I’ll warn you now - the characters in this book are deliciously unlikable. There’s not a single one of them that doesn’t have some hideous secret, and it makes the games going on in this book all the more fun. While there’s a whole host of characters, we’re following Keisha, the new young wife of significantly older man William, and Marcie, a woman who, by her own admission, is former trailer trash, who married up and is trying to hang onto her husband and their status with all her might. There is so much going on in this book. It’s like Gossip Girl for grown ups, and the first twist honestly left me in stitches. There were so many twists and turns in this story, so many people with so many things to hide, and I never knew where this story was going to go. I felt bad for Keisha, who moved from one trapped situation to another, and who couldn’t escape from the ghosts of her past. Where Keisha was open and honest, Marcie was more of a wildcard, and even while reading her point of view, it felt like this woman had something to hide. (And I don’t mean just the secret that we know she has from the very beginning.) It felt like she had a lot of skeletons in her closet, and I like that we got the points of view from two such very different characters. Keisha was so vulnerable and willing to put everything out there, but Marcie was stoic and hard. It was so interesting reading about both of them. And the women they were surrounded by (traditionally known as ‘old money,’) were so superficial and critical.
This story went by so fast for me. Things never felt like they were dragging, and I didn’t want to put this book down. The only thing that was a bit of a turnoff for me was the part that magic played in this book. It seemed like such an odd element, and I was never sure of its place in the story. I will say that while I didn’t love the ending of this book, it was satisfying enough. And again, there were surprises right up until the last page that gripped me, so I think that speaks for itself. If you’re looking for a Thriller that stands out among the rest with its unique premise, you will, no doubt, enjoy Dead to Her!
Jason's boss goes away to London to grieve his wife's death and returns with a new, very young wife. Marcie. who had an affair with Jason Maddox and then he divorced his wife and married her, instantly feels jealous as she sees her husband eyeing Keisha. Marcie has always felt insecure because she didn't come from old money. Therefore, she may have married into this world of wealth but she’ll never be part of it. But when things start happening that could jeopardize all that she has worked hard to achieve, she will stop at nothing to hold on to it.
I loved the storyline of this book. It kept me engrossed and wanting to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. My only complaint is that I felt that Marcie and Keisha's characters came across as flat to me. Other than that it was an excellent book, and I loved the twist at the end. Definitely worth the read!
Many thanks to NetGalley, William Morrow and Sarah Pinborough for the opportunity to read this book - loved it! 4 stars for a very twisty book that will definitely keep you guessing until the very last page!
Taking place in Savannah in the houses of the Uber-wealthy, Marcie is the young second wife to Jason. As such, while she has youth on her side, the rest of society living and fitting in doesn't come quite as easy. When Jason's boss, William, brings home a young, wilder new wife, Keisha, just months after his wife died, Marcie is no longer the youngest. She watches her husband flirt shamelessly with Keisha and her jealousy flares up.
The rest you need to read to discover because there is a lot going on here and I don't want to give anything away. Lots of heat, voodoo, questionable people and choices to keep you wondering who's doing what to whom. Lots of fun between these covers!
I really wanted to like this book, and I was interested in the mystery/thriller aspect of it, but unfortunately everything about the setting felt fake. The author has some outward idea about what rich Southern people are like, but no deep down understanding. I eventually couldn't finish it for this reason.
This was a great fast paced read with lots of twists and turns. Behind Her Eyes is one of my all time favorites so I was excited to read this one by Pinborough. It does not disappoint. I highly recommend it!
As you embark on the rollercoaster that is Dead to Her, buckle up and hang on. It's a hell of a ride!
This is definitely one of those books where you are better off going in blind. I'd hate to ruin even one twist of this book by accidentally disclosing it in my review. Therefore, I am going to be extremely vague. Let's just say that our main character, Marcie, who is Jason's second wife, finds herself quite jealous of newcomer, Keisha. Keisha has recently married widower, William who is quite a bit older than her. Marcie is envious of the attention Keisha is receiving since she is the newest and youngest in their group. She is even more jealous when she notices her husband is one of the ones giving Keisha extra attention. Her suspicions that Jason may be pursuing an affair with Keisha hijack Marcie's imagination and lead her to all kinds of conclusions with only circumstantial proof. After all "once a cheater, always a cheater..." Just when you think you've figured out where the storyline is going, it takes a completely new direction and you'll be left trying to sort everything out all over again. I loved it! It kept me on my toes and my mind was continually trying to jump ahead and figure out the next plot move.
Thank you to NetGalley, William Morrow and Ms. Pinborough for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was so looking forward to reading this book and I wasn't disappointed. The story had just the right mix of everything you need to make a great, little bit spooky, whodunnit. The wealthy folks of Savannah were so transparent that you could concentrate on the other things that were going on, like Voodoo dolls, cursed mud balls and everyone's past lives that they were trying to keep hidden. I could not put this book down!!
Book 23 of 2020: Dead to Her- thank you @williammorrowbooks for my review copy! Goodreads calls this book perfect "For fans of Liane Moriarty, Liv Constantine and Lisa Jewell, a twisty psychological thriller about a savvy second wife who will do almost anything to come out on top...Revenge is best served cold, but in the steamy Savannah heat, blood runs so hot that this summer it might just boil over into murder." I was hesitant to pick up another thriller right after reading and loving The Sundown Motel, and for the most part, this one did not disappoint! I always love a good thriller set amongst the backdrop of the rich and the famous, and a battle between first and second wives. This one ended up with a bit of a twist between the wives. There was also an element of magic and voodoo, which added a unique layer to this story. Add in husbands behaving badly and you've got the making for a totally bingeworthy, addictive read! There were characters I loved and characters I didn't, and they all came together in a colorful cast that made the story entertaining. My only issue with the book was the pacing was a little slow the first half. However, I felt like it definitely picked up the second half, and I was glad for that. 4/5⭐ Dead to Her is out this upcoming Tuesday February 11!
2.5 stars. “Dead to Her” is set in Savannah society, where Marcie, a young trophy wife, thinks she is being removed from her position in her circle of friends by Keisha, the even younger trophy wife of her husband’s business partner. Eventually, Marcie and Keisha begin a forced friendship and things start to unravel from there.
I really wanted to like this book, but it was only mediocre at best. Part of the problem was that basically all of the characters were beyond pretentious and none were really likable. Additionally, the creole/voodoo elements didn’t really make much sense in the story (even though they sort of played a part in the ending). Once these elements made their way into the plot line, what began as a domestic drama turned into a somewhat unbelievable and confusing narrative.
Ah Marcie. She's the top dog trophy wife in Savannah until Keisha, who is younger and hotter, and married to Marcie's husband Jason's boss. And then Keisha starts to chat with Jason who, as Marcie well knows, is open to affairs. These are two kinda unlikable people but the back and forth is entertaining. No spoilers about how and why this goes from petty to crazy. There's black magic and voodoo involved (wasn't really a fan of this but ok, fine). Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. Pinborough is a good storyteller and this one will keep you entertained. Very good for travel.
A twisty psychological thriller about a savvy 2nd wife who will do almost anything to come out on top from the New York Times Bestselling author Sarah Pinborough sign me up!! I read this a couple months ago and I went in totally blind as I do with most of the thrillers I read and I enjoyed it a ton! This author’s writing is super creative and full of I didn’t see that coming!!
The book has unreliable narrators, epic twists and a touch of voodoo aspect in it that can be unsettling at times. However, overall I enjoyed this one!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a fun read! I enjoyed the main characters and the relationships they had. I was constantly trying to figure out who was going to be the bad guy and was completely surprised by the ending.
This was a twisty and turny mystery and psychological thriller. It took a little bit to get going but once it did it was so good.
Damn. I liked Behind Her Eyes so much. This didn't even come close to it. The book is basically RICH PEOPLE PROBLEMS. It takes forever to something to actually happen and when it did, I just didn't care anymore.
I went in blind when I started this book, but I've read all of Sarah Pinborough's novels and I was prepared to expect the unexpected. I definitely got it!
This book is a binge-worthy look in the hot steamy setting of Savannah high society, with rich men, botoxed women, shady characters, lots of booze, drugs, and a sprinkle of black magic. Most of the characters are unlikeable but they are layered, complex, and fascinating.
This book is about marriage, betrayal, secrets, lies, wealth, high society, infidelity, and voodoo. It lifts the cover on the dark underbelly of the mysterious South, and has a slightly supernatural vibe.
The story is twisty, turn-y, and full of surprises throughout the entire book. Sarah Pinborough is a master of surprises with many tricks up her sleeve. It's not as WTF shocking as Behind Her Eyes, but it's very entertaining.
This is the first book I’ve read of Sarah’s although I do own 2 of her other books. I was super excited to receive an advanced copy of this book! The first 1/3 was meh for me, but I kept reading because I was just hoping for it to get better. It did get better and I definitely did want to see what happened but overall the book was just ok for me. It had some weird voodoo and magic vibes that I didn’t care for and I didn’t love the ending. I’m still glad I read it and I know lots of other people will love it. Thank you #netgalley and #williammorrow publishing for this advanced copy of #deadtoher
