The first 9 chapters were extremely slow with pure backstory that honestly didn’t make that much difference to the plot in general. The book truly started in chapter 10, in my opinion. And if it had started with the accident and the backstory was sprinkled throughout, then it would’ve worked much better. There were too many “You know, Bob” instances that made the dialogue feel too stilted and unrealistic, like too much author’s interference that took me out of the story every single time.
The pace picked up on Chapter 10 and the stakes were raised with the crash, the deaths and the lives hanging on the balance, but then Chapter 15 was kind of strange with that “The Shack” vibe. But okay, I can agree to disagree in a fictional setting.
I thought Candy would bring the ultimate conflict for the remainder of the book, but even that fizzled out once the character actually showed up on the page because the author chose a cliched, two-dimensional characterization for her. All the tension was gone then. And while the premise had a great promise, the stakes were so low, there wasn’t much to root for, except for a miracle for Erin and her family.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first time reading anything by this author, so I didn't really know what to expect. This book was fast paced and easy to read. There were lots of twists and turns that I didn't expect. I look forward to reading more from this author. I highly recommend this book.
