The Missing Sister* by Elle Marr is a suspenseful and engaging thriller. It follows the story of a woman named Shay, who travels to Paris to find out what really happened to her twin sister, who supposedly died there. As Shay digs deeper, she uncovers secrets and mysteries that make her question everything she thought she knew about her sister. The book is fast-paced with plenty of twists, and it keeps you guessing until the end. If you enjoy thrillers with strong characters and unexpected plot turns, this one is worth reading!
I had high hopes for The Missing Sister based on the intriguing synopsis, but sadly, it didn’t live up to my expectations. The premise of Shayna Darby heading to Paris to uncover the mystery of her vanished twin sister had me hooked, but the execution left me feeling disappointed.
Despite the promise of a thrilling mystery, I found the pacing to be quite slow and the narrative felt disjointed. There were moments when the story seemed to gain momentum, only to be followed by several chapters where nothing much happened. I really wanted to get lost in the pages, but instead, I felt like I had to force myself to keep reading.
While some readers might enjoy the unfolding mystery, I just didn’t connect with the characters, which made it hard to stay engaged. There were definitely glimmers of potential in the writing, so I would be open to trying another book by this author, but unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me. Overall, it’s an okay read, but I think it may resonate more with others than it did with me.
Full review on blog - very much enjoy this author and her books. You can always expect to get a thrilling and twisty tale. This book was no exception and the characters always manage to come to life with their complexities and how they navigate the events in the story. Highly recommend giving this title a try and picking up other ones by Elle Marr
Reading the blurb I thought this would be a great read. Instead it was a big dissapointment. Try as I might I didn't get into the story at all. I love it when you can't stop turning pages cause you NEED to find out what will happen next. "The missing sister" was exactly the opposite. The story was all over the place, there was no rhythm at all, as soon as it seemed to pick up then it was slowed down again with nothing happening for several chapters... I felt like I had to force myself to keep on ...
I just couldn’t get into this one. It’s been left unfinished on my shelf and haven’t been able to get myself to finish it. Such a shame because the description had me so intrigued! The writing style just was difficult for me and parts just dragged on much longer than necessary. So unfortunate
An intriguing synopsis but ultimately wasn't for me. An ok read that others may love. Ultimately I found it slow paced.
I give it three stars. I did read it to the end and although I think the ending is a bit too pat, it’s okay as far as thrillers go.
I ended up dnfing this at 25% I lost my interest, I didn’t really care what was happening. I had hopeful thoughts before but I sadly couldn’t find any interest while reading this.
Ell Marr is a must have on my book shelf! Love the writing the suspense everything keeps me wanting more! Can never go wrong picking up a book by Ell Marr!
I enjoyed The Missing Sister immensely. It keeps you guessing, with plenty of twists and turns. Marr develops her characters beautifully, and it's difficult to tell the good guys from the bad
Great book. Very suspenseful and I loved the characters. I would recommend the author and would recommend to friends.
This is one of those books where the premise grabs you and you’re so excited to read but then...you just can’t. I don’t know if it’s because of pacing or that I just didn’t connect with the characters but I couldn’t finish this book. The writer shows promise in some areas and I would give another book of hers a try though.
Your parent are long dead, your sister vanished, only to seemingly become the victim of a serial killer. You receive a coded message that says "Alive. Trust no one" what would you do? Search for the truth.
Filled with suspense, and keeps you on the edge of your seat
The premise was interesting, but the execution had a lot to wish. I was expecting something like Gone Girl or as engaging, but alas, it was neither engaging, nor interesting. I struggled to finish this book and found it underdeveloped, slow, shallow and boring. The prose was very weak.
There were so many implausible moments. Like when the missing sister leaves a clue to her twin, where she uses a crypted language only they know and says "Trust no one." Why couldn't she just say "Do not trust [bad guy's name]? Why giving all these weird clues if she could just write down her abductor's name? Why did she want her sister to find her if the sister could do nothing to help her? This is just one of the hundred questions that came to me while I struggled through this book. The main heroine was making such silly decisions and not paying attention to important things, which would help her see the bad guy's identity right in the beginning, just as I saw it. The clues and red herrings were so obvious.
A thin, weak, underdeveloped plot. And a very medicore writing.
Still, I am grateful for the ARC.
It took me a few too many tries to get into this book. I'm not sure if it was a me moment or the book moment but when I did get into it, I really enjoyed it. I thought the plot could have been stronger but I liked the writing, which is important to me when I consider whether I would pick up something else by the author.
If you enjoyed Dan Browns' Da Vinci Code, then this will probably be up your alley.
I enjoyed this twisty tale of a sister trying to find her twin in another country and figure out if she’s dead or alive. There are so many suspicious characters that she doesn’t know who to trust. Unpredictable!
Talk about a fantastic page turner! This is one of those books that you just don’t want to put down. I have never read this author before but I can guarantee I will read her books again. My advice to you is hurry and pick it up and read it! Thanks for writing such a great book!
While the idea on paper is interesting, the execution is weak. The plot does not hold the interesting aspects of the quite strong start of the novel and the quality goes down, with the last chapters bordering on illogical. The Paris setup (with nods to Dan Brown) can not save the missing logic behind the plot. The atmosphere could be played much strongly, too.
The only saving grace here us the love and bond between sisters.
Shayna Darby has been estranged from her twin sister Angela since the tragic death of their parents. A phone call from Paris leaves Shayna reeling - her sister, who is a graduate student in the historic city, has been positively identified as the possible victim of a serial killer. After Shayna arrives in Paris to clear out her sister's apartment, will a coded message change everything?
I wanted to like The Missing Sister, but there were issues with the plot that I just could not ignore. Couple that with a main character who was supposed to be smart, but made poor choices, and the result was a novel that did not live up to expectations. I spent much of the book waiting to see if my predictions were correct. The historical aspects of Paris got lost in the shuffle, which was disappointing. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend The Missing Sister to other readers.
Disclaimer: I was given an opportunity to read an Advanced Reader's Copy from NetGalley and the publisher, Thomas & Mercer. I also chose the novel from the First Reads Selections. The decision to review this book was entirely my own.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
The synopsis of this book sounded intriguing to me so I requested a copy to read.
Even though I just read and loved this author's newest book, "Lies We Bury", I couldn't get into this book no matter how hard I tried and I just want to state that this book just wasn't for me.
