This was an engaging novel full of twists and turns. Who can you trust? Trust no one! Only Shayna doesn't heed this advice when she goes to Paris...with limited time, and even more limited French....to search for her missing, presumed dead twin sister, Angela. During her search she runs into several men who want to help her - Angela's boyfriend, a neighbor or two, some work colleagues and the police, but no one is willing or able to give Angela the kind of information she needs. She heads off into some of the sketchiest areas of Paris to find out more about Angela's last days, and the twists and turns keep coming right up until the very end. If you are able to suspend your disbelief (seriously - how many times do you "bump" into someone in a city?), you'll enjoy this book as much as I did!
The stakes of this book made it so intense! It was hard to put down and I desparately wanted to know what the ending was. Marr created relatable characters in a situation that we hope no one can really relate to!
I received an advance digital copy of this book from the author, publisher and NetGalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The Missing Sister is a gripping read! It wraps together Parisian history and a suspenseful mystery beautifully, Great pacing made this an easy, one sitting read.
5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for this ARC.
What a gritty thriller. It had a da Vinci Code type feel to it. The description of the catacombs beneath Paris gave me goosebumps. More than once, I paused reading to google about what the author was writing about. It was an added bonus. I got a good thriller, a few twists and turns, and a history lesson. I had no idea about the 6 million Parisians buried beneath the city. How creepy right? This book was creepy awesome, plain and simple. It was beautifully written, with incredible descriptions. A fast read that I would definitely recommend.
DNF. Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for this early copy! I decided to not keep reading this one, it was not for me. Thanks!
I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book. I enjoy the premise and the fact the author wrote about a missing sister who happens to have an identical twin sister. If you want to read a book that is suspenseful this is not the one for you. I felt this book lack a twist and through out this book I lost interest. Overall, this is a decent book.
I love a good mystery, and this is a really exciting and simultaneously cozy read. It's well written and I liked the pacing. It explores the sibling bond in the midst of the mystery at hand. Nicely done.
just from the summary I was hooked and let me tell you it did not disappoint. I loved the mystery and the characters. It was a really good read that I couldn't put down.
Shayna Darby has lost her parents and now she has to deal with the death of her estranged twin Angela who appears to be the victim of a serial killer. While cleaning out her sister apartment Shayna discovers a message from her sister to her. There was suspense in the book but it didn’t move fast enough for me. I struggled getting into the Thank you to net galley for a copy.
The Missing Sister was one of my first thrillers that I have read this year and I enjoyed it. I found the characters and premise to be to my liking, however I struggled picking up this book and finishing it. It was not one I compulsively read; I kept putting it down and reaching for something else and then coming back to it.
I loved the intrigue of this book and trying to solve the mystery. The characters were good and I liked the twists and turns.
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
“The Missing Sister” by Elle Marr had a good premise but the execution just did not do it for me. The pacing was slow. I really struggled to finish it . Sadly, I just did not connect.
A good old fashioned mystery. Nothing is quite what you seem. I really liked this story and would definitely recommend it as a book that you can curl up with and spend the afternoon with. 4/5.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for review based upon my honest opinion.
When I first started reading this book, I thought it was gonna be really good. I was really involved in the first few chapters, when she uncovers the message that her sister leaves for her and their secret twin language, that says “alive trust no one” I was hooked. But then the story didn’t hold my attention and I found it hard to actually finish the book. I felt the storyline, while a good story, wasn’t followed through fully. The characters are somewhat interesting but I can’t say that I was not disappointed in the way the story went and the ending of the book.
Shayna Darby has received a horrible email informing her of the death of her identical twin sister who has been living in Paris for several years. The message left behind said: trust no one.
Elle Marr is a good writer. I just found this book very hard to get into and it didn't keep my attention. When I have to reread pages multiple times to see what happened, I know the book is done for me. I had to stop this one at about 60%
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book for an honest review.
Interesting premise, solid execution, loved the Paris locale. The ending was also unexpected, which is a plus . Understand that this was an ARC so will just flag something I noticed regarding the protagonist's fluctuating comprehension of French, with one particular jarring scene involving a crime scene (particularly as a French speaker myself that came in to conversational fluency while living in French-speaking country for 5 years, and having went to classes as in my late teens for close to two years.) Hopefully that was corrected before the final version.
The premise of this book started out strong. Shayna learns that her estranged identical twin sister, Angela, has turned up in a morgue in Paris, and she heads there from California to identify the body before starting med school in a week. But as soon as she gets there she finds a coded message from Angela telling her that she is still alive and to trust no one. What ensues is a hard to follow and improbable romp through Paris for Shayna, who heads from one location to the next trying to figure out what happened to her sister and where she might be, while "randomly" running into the exact people she needs to. Interspersed were old emails from Angela to Shayna, and Shayna's memories from childhood, but I'm not sure the value these added to moving the plot along. By the end, I was flipping through just to see who the "bad guy" was (only two possible suspects in the book so you have a 50% chance of guessing right!) and was left even more confused by the decision the sisters made at the end on how to get out of their mess or why one of them ended up in jail even? I did't get it...
A very suspenseful read ! I enjoyed this wonderful thriller that kept me turning pages into the night. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity . .My review opinion is my own.
Shayna Darby has already lost both her parents when she is notified her twin Angela is dead in Paris. Shayna goes to Paris to clean out her sisters apartment and finds clues meant for her only that Angela is indeed alive and in hiding. What follows is a interesting well crafted mystery that follows the dark reaches of criminal elements in Paris that Shayna is shocked to deal with. to the reveal of the ending.
I enjoyed this read as it has the right elements for a suspenseful thriller that has good characterization and a interesting twist to the plot.
I loved this book! I thought the main character was compelling and the mystery had me guessing all the way to the end! Love the Paris setting also.
The Missing Sister by Elle Marr is a book I initially struggled with and thought would be a for sure DNF. However, after reading some reviews from friends, I decided to keep going with this one and I can honestly say that I am not disappointed at all. While there were some issues for me, especially with dialogue in some places and just general story line, I really enjoyed Shayna’s quest to find out what happened to Angela. I loved trying to piece the mystery together and thought the ending was satisfying, but overall, this was an ok read.
