Two of Abigail‘s brothers were killed by the Fae. All that Abigail thinks about is revenge. Lucifer is her best friend and he loves her. She loves him but is also falling for the fae tree boy, Coinneach, across the river who is her enemy. Will she become an evil being that only wants revenge and death or will she become the healer that her parents hoped she’d become? Time will tell and being a third year apprentice of the witch of nightmares will give her the knowledge of how to kill the fae who killed her brothers. She wants to kill his family but not him. Lucifer doesn’t want her to be a murderer but Abigail wants revenge. She decides to go through with it and is successful with Lucifer’s help. After Abigail exacts her revenge, she ends up going to the mortal realm with Lucifer. The witch tells Lucifer that if he leaves her and goes with Abigail, he will be cursed. We’ll see what happens in the next episode. This is a bittersweet heartbreaking story of revenge and lost love. This story is the third book of a series and a spin-off of another series but works well as a stand alone. I liked the story but wished Abigail had made better choices and appreciated her gifts and friendship more. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Abigail has finished her three years of apprenticeship with the witch of nightmares. She now has the knowledge of how to kill the Fae who killed her brothers. The witch of nightmares will guide her on this perilous venture. Abigail doesn’t believe that she must do a love potion in order to gain the trust of the Fae. She does begin to fall in love with the male Fae that she interacts with. Even so, she wants to kill his family but not him. Lucifer asks if she is sure that she wants to be a murderer. Abigail does want revenge for her two dead brothers. She decides to do it and is successful with Lucifer’s help. Will her male Fae understand why she doesn’t kill him? How does he react to the death of his family? Abigail ends up going to the mortal realm with Lucifer. The witch tells Lucifer that if he leaves her and goes with Abigail. He will be cursed. How will he be cursed? What will Abigail do in the mortal realm? Will she survive?
This is a novel of revenge which shows the consequence of what can happen. It shows grief, loss and love too. It’s an amazing story even though it has a different feel to it at least for me. My heart broke at times throughout the story both for Abigail and Lucifer.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The drama continues in this novel featuring Abigail, the woman who was to become Clarissa’s fairy godmother. The story gets even juicier as Abigail grows up and she becomes enamoured with one of the fairies she vowed to hate. Things obviously get messy and complicated as tragedy strikes, impacting those involved and completely changing the course of Abigail and Lucifer’s life. We learn in this novel how Abigail came to be in the morty world, and her life leading up to her adoption of Missy and Clarissa.
So far this has been a really good series. I can’t wait to see how things work out in the end.
Lucy and Abby’s relationship is even more complicated by a fae boy who befriends her. Abby’s plan for revenge puts her future at risk. This book takes us to a dark place and the brutality was a bit surprising for me although it was not undeserved. I must admit that I was shocked at the ending. Why did I not see that coming? There may have been a squeal of delight! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Pocket Full of Poison is a short novel, third in a series about Abigail, a young witch with an affinity for trees, and her best friend/romantic interest, Lucifer (called Lucy periodically throughout). Abby is actively seeking revenge for two brothers who died as a result of the actions of the Fae. She spends the book plotting to become close with a vulnerable Fae man, and eventually begins to question her own motivation, and whether killing all of the Fae is the right decision.
This is the first book of the series I have read, although it is the third in the Trouble with Hedge Witches series. While I normally don't care for starting in the middle of a series, this one was easy to leap into and Dorie quickly made it possible for a first-time reader to engage with the world. While I feel as if I have a sense of earlier books, I wasn't inundated with telling stories that have already been written which I appreciate. It was an excellent balance.
Abigail is not the most robust character, and unfortunately that hurts the telling. She strives for revenge and the opportunity to punish those who have wronged her, but her cruelty is at times difficult to digest without a thorough understanding of her background, and a built-in empathy for her struggle. I don't believe this is a structural issue with the ARC itself, but rather just a concern of entering the series in the middle.
The trope at play is enemy to lover, a personal favorite of mine but I know others don't like it as much. Fair warning that it plays heavily here.
This is a very easy read - I knocked it out in about an hour and a half. I am toying with going back and picking up the other books, which is a relatively strong endorsement. Was this the most brilliant read of my year? Nope. But did I enjoy it? Yup. A solid three stars for sure.
**My thanks to Netgalley for an e-ARC of this title in exchange for a fair and honest review.**
Fantastic book for anyone who loves witchcraft. Although it was not my cup of tea, and I didn’t read the pervious novels so I was a bit lost, I applaud Dorie for all the work that she has put into this series. I will most definitely put this series in my to read pile for the future.
