This title is a little slow to hook me, but by the end, I was curious to see where a sequel might take it.
I adore the fantasy components of the story and how different species interbreed to create "others." Like happens in interracial relationships, the others are sometimes ostracized for not being identical to a 'pure' lineage. The main character, Elon, is female but it took me a while to realize it as the author does not fall into typical stereotypes. Rather, Elon is described for her abilities and traits from her mixed heritage.
Overall, a decently entertaining read for anyone who enjoys YA fantasy.
A really unusal story with both a sci-fi feel and a paranormal feel. The main character Elon reminded me of a similar character from a YA series about vampire pirates also know as vampyres and one such female that could control herself because of how she became one. The idea that the fantastic characters like trolls and vampires living on another planet was definetly s new and unusual twist. The characters and the story were both built up in gradual way but also not predictable. Definelty a good read that keeps your attention.
This book had a unique premise that kept me invested from the beginning to end. The characters were great and I really enjoyed reading it.
Thank you #NetGalley for providing this book to me for an honest review.
This is my first book by this author so I was unsure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find an interesting world with a blend of standard fantasy and new, interesting character types.
The main character is a strong female lead with another strong female best friend. That's a nice relationship to build a tale around as the romantic storyline is completely overused.
Most of the book is focused on the characters exploring a new part of their world as they try to find a way to combat a new threat to their world as well as help a group seeking assistance.
I really enjoyed the new viewpoints of the storyline and felt the author was pretty creative building this new world.
There were a few misses for me. Overall, there were a lot of questions the storyline brought up in the beginning of the book that didn't get answered until the end. That's a really long time to have to wait as a reader. It would have been better to have had answers introduced at multiple points along the way. There was a long point in the back half of the story where there was very little action. Then just as it started picking up, there was a lot of time spent on handing out answers to the questions from the beginning and providing a big back story. That felt very clunky to me and I found i started to lose interest.
But I got through it and while there are a few more questions left unanswered, I think the next book will be able to take right off. I'm interested to see where this story will lead to.
Finally a YA fantasy book that doesn’t define the protagonist by their gender. I get so sick of reading YA fantasies that bang on about a females appearance or how desirable they are to everyone around them, so this was a refreshing change.
There are a diverse set of characters and the world building is great. I loved reading all about the trolls, vampires and dwarves, and I’m looking forward to experiencing the rest of the series.
A great start to a YA fantasy series!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
