The was an entertaining book. The characters are well-rounded and relatable. The mystery was full of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the big reveal.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
This is my first peek into the lives of those in South Cove. The storyline was interesting, and the characters are likeable. I like that the author is bringing attention to a serious issue of elder abuse. Although this is book number 10 in the series, it is still possible to enjoy the storyline without having read the entire series up to this point. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading other books in the series. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book.
I was THRILLED to see this full length mystery for the Tourist Trap series. I've been reading this series from the very beginning and while I was enjoying the novellas I wanted more time in South Cove. This did not disappoint. The mystery was fascinating and I liked seeing Jackie in a bit of a more vulnerable light. I did figure out what was going on a little bit before Jill did but that didn't keep me from thoroughly enjoying the reveal. I did wish that the murder was explored a little more and there had been a little bit more focus on just what was going on there but that didn't keep this from being a thoroughly entertaining mystery and a fabulous visit with old friends. I can't wait for the next book!
I enjoyed reading this one, Glad I had the opportunity to read it. I had a hard time putting it down. I recommend it to others.
I loved this book! It kept me reading well into the night not wanting to put it down! I loved everything about this book and can't wait to read the next one!
Jill Gardner is stunned when she learns her Aunt Jackie broke up with her fiance. He’s so devoted to her. It makes no sense, but Aunt Jackie isn’t talking. In fact, she’s acting quite strange. Jill is afraid her aunt might be ill.
Jill hosts a seminar about elder abuse at her bookshop. She’s really not all that interested in the topic until her she finds out her aunt has been getting mysterious calls which led to her break up. Her aunt is usually quite tough, but these calls have really broken her spirit.
As Jill looks into the calls, she learns her aunt is probably the victim of a scam. Then, a member of the Senior Project is murdered and Jill’s detective boyfriend is investigating. He warns her to stay away from this case, but Jill can’t help herself. Especially if her aunt is involved.
I always love my visits to South Cove, California. Jill is one of my favorite amateur sleuths. She and her boyfriend are the perfect detective team.
This book hooked me right from the start. The secondary characters are well-developed with Aunt Jackie being one of my favorites. These characters all feel like old friends.
This is the 10th book in the series. I was surprised to see I missed one in this series so I will have to correct that. The mystery is contained in each book so it’s probably not a necessity to read them in order but I think it’s more fun if you do so you can see Jill and Greg’s relationship grow.
Although I could see where the mystery was leading, I was totally shocked to see who was the mastermind behind the murder and scams. There, of course, are some red herrings tossed in but the author did a great job of keeping me guessing.
This is my favorite book in the series, so far. I’m definitely ready for the next one.
I think that this has been my favorite Tourist Trap Mystery yet and the Almond Cookies are "melt in your mouth" awesome. I would suggest jumping straight to the recipe so that you can enjoy these easy to make cookies while reading about the latest in South Cove City and Jill Gardners exploints while running the Coffee, Books, and More, coffee shop/book store. No previous knowledge of Jill's sluething abilities are necessary to be able to enjoy this installment and we even get a little education regarding the social servie agencies that see to the elderly and possible pitfalls to avoid or at least be wary of. Two mysteries for the price of one as the clues lead Jill . This book was both informative and entertaining. The newest character, Deek Kerr is hoot and half and easy to picture with those blond dreds and wise yet whimsical surfer dialect. We all take it for granted the we can spot a scam, these days, even our cell phones warn us when an incoming call is possible spam or a telemarketer. This story looks at that very possibility but with a heart wrenching twist. So be sure to take a moment from your armchair sluething and reflect on those older folks you know and reach out to them if nothing else than to catch up and let them know that they are not alone.
Memories and Murder
by Lynn Cahoon
The name of the series, Tourist Trap Mysteries, doesn’t begin to describe this bookish set adequately. Memories and Murder is the latest installment in which Jill Gardner, owner of Coffee, Books and More in little South Cove, drinks coffee, eats sweet treats, and reads her way through relationship and murder issues. There are lots of threads to this plot. Aunt Jackie has called off her engagement to Harrold and gone silent. Deek is a new barista in the coffee shop; he is more perceptive than psychic, despite his heritage. He has great ideas for book clubs and follows through with implementation. Jill juggles investigating a murder and a scam and finds herself in deadly trouble.
The story is told from Jill’s point of view, and first person narration works well here. The pace moves along snappily in this cozy mystery. Don’t be deterred by Memories and Murder being the tenth book in the sequence. Author Lynn Cahoon is a master at bringing readers up to speed on characters and background. In the first chapter you will learn almost everything you need to know to enjoy this book while the storyline gets underway. There is perhaps a little too much description of who ate what, when, and where, but other than feeling like I needed to accompany Jill and her dog Emma on their beach runs, those details were not truly excessive. In fact, I’m looking forward to joining the South Cove family of friends in their next adventure.
I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Lyrical Underground (Kensington Press) for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Rating: 5/5
Category: Mystery
Notes: #10 in The Tourist Trap Mystery Series, but works well as a standalone.
Publication: November 12, 2019— Lyrical Underground (Kensington Press)
Memorable Lines:
Fighting with my boyfriend had not been one of the things on my to-do list today, but you had to make room for impromptu items.
Operation Harrold Wins Jackie Back was going to work. It had to work. All the best books and movies had a happily ever after. Real life should too.
…he’d assured me that the sun would turn to ice before he left me for her.
This is a series that I've come to regard as an old 'friend' and it was nice to visit in South Cove again. I love the way the characters and their relationships are evolving.
I appreciated the fact that Ms. Cahoon approached the issue of elder abuse in a very sensitive but factual way. Although I bet that Aunt Jackie doesn't want to be referred to as an elder.
I'm looking forward to the possible weddings of my 'friends' and the next one in the series!
What a treat to read another adventure set in the touristy town of South Cove. Jill and Greg have become a favorite sleuthing couple and I kind of liked how this one took on something that is in the news often. The elderly are sadly the target of many types of scams and like Aunt Jackie, can be too stubborn or embarrassed to admit questions about it.
The tenth book in the Tourist Trap Mystery series by Lynn Cahoon is Memories and Murder. Jill's bookstore is hosting a discussion on elder abuse. At the time she had no idea that she would be seeking the speaker's help regarding that very topic and he Aunt Jackie. Meanwhile a murder in town has everyone on edge. I love this series, and this book fit right in. It also brought to light how anyone can fall for a nefarious scam artist. I look forward to more in this series.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Elder abuse comes in many forms, Since my parents are what could be described as elderly it is something that resonates with me. It can take many forms but perhaps the worst are the scams that would deprive the elderly of what little they may have saved for the end of days.
Jill is drawn into a cruel hoax involving her aunt. Someone is calling who purports to be her long deceased husband. She breaks off her engagement to her soul mate and everyone is miserable. By revealing the scam, Jill is able to reunite her aunt with Harold but she also gets pulled into something far darker and more nefarious. In fact, there is already one person dead and the villain is quite content to increase the body count. Jill will need all her smarts to stop these heinous criminals. I have enjoyed this series and the development of the relationships of the characters. This one does not disappoint.
Four purrs and two paws up.
It’s October in South Cove, California, and the locals in the quaint resort seem to be happily pairing off in the lull before the holidays. Everyone, that is, except for Jill Gardner’s elderly aunt, who just dumped her besotted fiancé and she won’t say why.
When Jill hosts a talk at Coffee, Books, and More on the topic of elder abuse, all that’s really on her mind is lunch. But the topic hits close to home when she discovers Aunt Jackie has been getting mysterious calls. Jill’s certain the caller is a con artist, of course, but her feisty aunt claims to understand this, though she’s still shaken and Harold’s still heartbroken. Who’s behind the scam and why was her aunt targeted? When a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill’s detective boyfriend is on the case and it soon becomes clear no one is safe when a caller from beyond becomes a killer in their midst.
The author does a nice job of tackling the subject of elder abuse in a straightforward way without being too preachy or too heavy handed with the information about the subject.
Instead of one mystery the author gives us two mysteries to keep you on your toes. Both mysteries are well written, well developed, and full of twists and turns that lead to the conclusion that ties both mysteries together.
The characters are well written, entertaining, interesting, well developed, and lifelike. You almost wish that the characters were real people so you could become friends.
I have enjoyed this series since book #1 Guidebook to Murder and I look forward to reading book #11 Murder in Waiting when it comes out in June. I can't wait to see what Jill and the other South Cove residents get up to while helping Amy plan her wedding.
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and Lyrical Underground for my review.
This is the 10th book in the Tourist Trap Mysteries. Jill and her boyfriend Detective Greg King are back, this time to investigate someone trying to scam Jill's Aunt Jackie and other seniors in Crystal Cove.
I like these mysteries, the characters are like old friends and Lynn Cahoon's plots are fun without being farfetched.
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
There are some things I really love about this series, and all of them were on display in Memories and Murder. I love that the books are light and quick and fun, but the puzzle is interesting and the crimes are believable. I like the realistic evolution of the characters’ relationships, and how much I’ve become acquainted with and invested in some of the secondary characters.. That’s particularly true of Aunt Jackie, and this book revolves around her in a way that none of the previous books have, at least to this extent.
And of course, I enjoy the main character(s): Jill with her mind that just can’t stop trying to figure things out, and Greg with his devotion to justice and Jill. I love the way Greg tries to keep Jill from investigating, and she tries to comply… but she can’t remain uninvolved, and he knows that and doesn’t hold it against her. This is a series where the relationship between the amateur (Jill) and the professional (Greg, a policeman) really works, in a way that it doesn’t in some cozy mystery series.
There are two simultaneous mysteries in this novel: What’s up with the calls Aunt Jackie is getting from someone who claims to be her deceased husband? And who killed the computer expert affiliated with a local organization that tries to help seniors protect themselves from financial fraud and abuse? (And a third question: Is there any connection between the two mysteries?) Jill tries to focus on Aunt Jackie’s woes while Greg works on the murder, but inevitably they end up helping each other out.
I hope Ms. Cahoon intends to go on writing this series, because I want more of these characters and the town and denizens of South Cove.
The mystery is solid and the author does a good job of laying out the clues along the way. Sadly, I missed some of them and was surprised in a very good way by the identity of the killer.
I am looking forward to many more books in the series.
This is book 10 in the Tourist Trap Mysteries and it's a great story. It's fresh and the series keeps growing and changing. The theme of this book is elder abuse and crime against the older generation. it's a topic in the news and offers some good insights and possible help for anyone in the same boat. Jill is concerned about Aunt Jackie and her abrupt ending of her engagement to Harold. Now a volunteer at the Senior center is dead and case after case of fraud against the seniors is being uncovered. The killer doesn't seemed concerned about killing anyone who gets in the way. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
When Jill Gardner, owner of Coffee, Books, and More hosts a meeting that includes the topic of elder abuse, she doesn't expect it to hit close to home. The speaker, a woman named Paula, can barely keep anyone interested, and Jill knows that Paula needs to be more outgoing. She also notices that Paula's boyfriend, Ben, treats her badly, but Paula herself doesn't see it.
But she's also worried about her Aunt Jackie, who has taken to becoming a recluse - only going to work and then home again, and she wonders why Jackie broke her engagement to Harrold without warning. Jackie won't say, and Jill won't press her.
Then a murder occurs, and it soon becomes apparent that there's more going on than meets the eye. Jill promises her boyfriend, police chief Greg King that she'll stay out of investigating if he'll help with Aunt Jackie - who has confessed everything to Jill, who's convinced a con artist is at work.
But Jill doesn't realize that there's more going on than meets the eye, and she needs to connect the dots before Jackie gets hurt or someone else gets killed...
I absolutely love this series, and this one doesn't disappoint. Ms. Cahoon takes the subject of elder abuse and shows us that even the most logical-seeming person can be taken in if the subject is right. The threads that start out as simple - with a murder on one hand and Aunt Jackie on the other - are slowly woven together to give us a portrait of murder, greed, jealousy, and even pain. It's an intriguing tale that while rather a quick read still gives us a tale that is delightful itself.
She manages to show us that Jill and Greg's relationship is moving forward, and gives us more information on Deek, the newest employee, and his background. He's definitely beginning to grow on me and I hope that he sticks around for awhile. We also have the usual characters of Jill's friend Amy, who is planning her wedding; psychic Esmeralda; and even the mayor, who seems to be suspicious of Greg's intentions (read the book and you'll know why).
All in all, the ending was satisfying with, of course, the discovery of who was the killer and the reasons behind it, and as also expected, South Cove is safe once again - until the next murderer decides to come to town. Recommended.
Memories and Murder, book #10 in the A Tourist Trap Mystery series is just as good as the first nine. Which I give all a 5 star rating. Lynn Cahoon is a great story teller. Her characters come to life on the pages. this book deals with elder abuse and scamming of senior citizens but as in the other books everyone comes together and rights the wrongs in their town. It is a fun, interesting read!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!
I was so glad to fall back into this series; despite having only read two of the other books this series is memorable and enjoyable. This was a very different taken on the characters though, with Jill's Aunt acting strangely and leaving us to wonder why. What is the connection with a character death offscreen? How does it all tie together? The fun was in detangling everything, and working out the motivations for the characters. As a very proficient author in this genre, Lynn does a fantastic job of delivering tidbits to keep the reader interested an turning pages!
Highly recommend both this author and series; she always seems to do something fresh and exciting within the genre. Five stars.
