I received a Reviewer Copy of Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon from the publisher Kensington Books through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
What It’s About: Jill, owns a bookshop in South Cove, California, where she hosts a discussion about Elder Abuse and just as she's hosting this talk, her elderly aunt Jackie starts acting strange. Soon, there's a threat of Fraud and a murder that might be connected.
What I Loved: I've been intrigued by this series since I heard a book in it advertised on All The Books. This was my first book I read and there was no need to pick up an earlier book first. I thought this was well done and really did feel like a cozy mystery. There was definitely a mystery but I wasn't stressed or on the edge of my seat to find out what happened. It was warm and atmospheric and not violent, it was a nice book for someone who likes mysteries but not the violence or fear that thrillers bring to the game.
What I didn’t like so much:. If I have one complaint its that there were a lot of characters and a lot of them seemed random to me, this is likely because I never read the other books. I also wasn't super invested in the central relationship, again probably because of this being the first one I read.
Who Should Read It: People who love mysteries but hate violence. People who love a small town feel in their books. People who love cozy mysteries.
General Summary: A cozy mystery that was highly enjoyable.
Somethings going on with Jill's Aunt Jackie and Jill is determined to find out what it is...even if Jackie's not looking for any help. Add in the murder of a local volunteer, and Jill has her hands full. Hopefully Jill can solve all the mysteries before someone else gets hurt
I love visiting Jill and all the residents of South Cove.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
This is the tenth full length story with several novellas along the way, and it is still going strong. I really enjoyed this outing of The Tourist Trap Mysteries. When Aunt Jackie calls off her engagement to Harrold and starts acting out of character, Jill Gardner has to ramp up her investigating. She is on the trail of a mysterious caller who is targeting her Aunt Jackie. He is playing on her love for her deceased husband, but claiming he is Ted, and that he is not dead, but in witness protection. There is also a dead body that Greg is investigating, but it doesn't take long to determine that these two things are somehow connected. Can Jill figure out what is going on in time to salvage Jackie's and Harrold's engagement?
I enjoy this series for so many reasons. Lynn Cahoon has a wonderful writing style, great well-developed main characters and strong secondary characters, and a great setting with both the town of South Cove, California and the coffee shop/bookstore, Coffee Books and More. The plot is well written with the reader feeling like they are right there solving the mystery with Jill and Greg. I like the romance between Jill and Greg as well. They are a great couple who have a lot in common and really support one another. Greg is the lead detective in town, yet understands Jill's desire to help others. Although he does not share information with her per se, he does not block her or intimidate her while she is sleuthing. This book is fast-paced, with a lot happening. Several storylines come together as the crime is investigated and it becomes obvious that both of the major crimes in this story are related. I did figure out some of what was happening before the final reveal, but the major culprit was not obvious to me until the author basically gave up a huge clue. The showdown was exciting and I was thrilled at the ending of this story. Once again, Lynn Cahoon has penned a wonderful story that I recommend to all cozy mystery lovers.
Memories and Murder” book 10 in the ”A Tourist Trap Mystery” series by Lynn Cahoon is a quick and enjoyable read.
It’s October in South Cove, California, and the locals in the quaint resort seem to be happily pairing off in the lull before the holidays. Everyone, that is, except for Jill Gardner’s elderly aunt, who just dumped her besotted fiancé—and she won’t say why.
When Jill hosts a talk at Coffee, Books, and More on the topic of elder abuse, all that’s really on her mind is lunch. But the topic hits close to home when she discovers Aunt Jackie has been getting mysterious calls. Jill’s certain the caller is a con artist, of course, but her feisty aunt claims to understand this, though she’s still shaken—and Harrold’s still heartbroken. Who’s behind the scam and why was her aunt targeted? When a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill’s detective boyfriend is on the case—and it soon becomes clear no one is safe when a caller from beyond becomes a killer in their midst.
This go around Jill and her Auntie Jackie are dealing with scams, especially on older citizens. I thought Lynn did a fabulous job of highlighting potential scams that might trap anyone that isn't aware or watching what is happening to them. Now a days you get phone scams or internet scams almost daily so I was glad it showed how people prey on the elderly. It really saddens me when I hear of people abusing or taking advantage of the elderly.
I was surprised when everything came to light and who all was involved. I did suspect but then due to some clever red herrings, doubt myself. I really enjoyed this story and am Happily waiting for the next.
I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from the publisher and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It was such a joy to be back with everyone in South Cove. I've been (im)patiently waiting for the next full-length novel, as the novellas just aren't long enough. After reading a disappointing cozy (in a different series by a different author) prior to this, Lynn's excellent writing and characters were much needed. Lynn has a wonderfully warm and friendly writing style that you can't help but wish you lived in South Cove! I just hope we don't have to wait another three years for installment #11!
Series: A Tourist Trap Mystery - Book 10
Author: Lynn Cahoon
Genre: Cozy Mystery/Book Store/Coffee Shop
Publisher: Lyrical Press
Page Count: 202
Out now from Lyrical Press comes Lynn Cahoon’s 10th book in the “A Tourist Trap Mystery” series, Memories and Murder.
Jill adores her aunt Jackie and is almost heartbroken when her aunt calls off her engagement to Harrold. No one knows why Jackie calls it off, and she isn’t talking until a volunteer winds up dead. Jill suspects that her aunt’s odd behavior and the murder may be connected. Even though she tries not to get involved, she finds herself asking questions but getting few answers. As usual in this mystery series, Jill eventually starts putting clues together but can’t seem to find the missing piece that will allow her to reveal the killer.
The Tourist Trap Mystery series is one of the best written and ever-growing series on the market! Written by a writer who knows her audience and never loses sight of what makes this series hold readers' attention. This book, like all of the others, is filled with wonderfully robust and exciting characters, a captivating plot, and a setting that makes readers want to pack their bags and move to South Cove.
Characters in this mystery series are constantly growing. They have and continue to evolve with rich emotional connections. They encompass everything that readers hope for in a cozy book and its characters. The victim is not well-liked by anyone except his girlfriend, and the killer is unexpected and might be a surprise for many readers.
I highly recommend Memories and Murder and the entire mystery series to readers. If you haven’t read any of these books, now is the perfect time to start! Readers will keep turning the page until the last word and will happily look forward to the next addition.
Lynn Cahoon has pulled out all the stops and written a story that tugs at the heartstrings and then some!
This opens with the monthly meeting of the shop owners, the visiting speaker (Paula) is talking about Elder Abuse (but it would help if she was a little more forceful when speaking), it is a day or so later that Jill suddenly puts the clues together and realises that something along those lines seems to be happening to her Aunt Jackie - which could account for why she suddenly dropped Harold, even though she still seems to really care for him. Jill eventually manages to get out of her Aunt that she has been receiving calls from her husband ... who died 20 years ago! This is why she dumped Harold as obviously she can't marry him if her husband is still living. Greg starts to look into things but has to take a step back from this as there is a murder, and Paula seems to be the suspect for this, everything seems to be circling around elder abuse and a con and Jill is determined that no one else should be hurt.
Add in the Mayor panicking that Greg will stand against him in the upcoming elections, Jill's friend Farrah trying to sort her wedding out and another friend Sadie (who makes all the delicious desserts that Coffee, Books and More sell) taking Paula under her wing and trying not to show that she is in love with the local Pastor and we have a mish mash of tales that make a fantastic whole (and I can't wait to see what happens next!)
Jill isn't quite sure what to make of the speaker talking about elder abuse but knows that the subject is an important one. Her Aunt Jackie was scammed in the past and Jill wants to make sure she keeps up with what she can do to keep this from ever happening again. With her Aunt acting weird she knows that something is going on and can't help but worry. She soon learns that her Aunt has been receiving phone calls from her dead husband. Jill is sure it !just be a scam but her Aunt believes it is her husband. While investigating Jill ends up at the Senior Project, she wants to figure out if they have talked to her Aunt in the past and if her information could have been leaked from there. When a volunteer from the project ends up dead Jill is sure that the police are looking at the wrong suspect. She is determined to find another direction for them to look at. Follow along as Jill tries to figure out who is trying to scam her Aunt and also save an innocent woman from being arrested for murder. This was a great mystery read that had me looking left and right for not only a scammer but also a killer.
A Welcome Visit To South Cove.....
A welcome visit to South Cove and book ten in the Tourist Trap Mystery series. A new investigation for Jill when, following a talk in her coffee shop, she realises that the subject is hitting much closer to home than she could possibly have imagined. Warmly written mystery and a worthy addition to the series.
This was a great cozy mystery. I love the characters and the setting. Memories and Murder will leave you guessing until the very end.
The tenth novel in Lynn Cahoon’s Tourist Trap series covers elder abuse, phone scams, and of course, Jill solving a murder. This time, she’s protecting her whacky but lovable Aunt Jackie who starts getting calls from the killer.
I love Lynn’s books, and I highly recommend them to mystery fans. 4 stars!!
*I was graciously given an ARC of this book via the publisher on NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Jill runs a bookstore and coffee shop in a small coastal Californian town in Memories and Murder, the tenth entry in the Tourist Trap cozy mystery series. When her partner and aunt, Jackie, unexpectedly calls off her engagement to Harrold, her niece Jill worries that something is wrong. Little does she know how wrong…
Jackie has been a victim of a con before and it appears she is being targeted again. This time someone who says he is her dead husband but in witness protection is asking her for money. If her husband is alive, she obviously can’t marry someone else.
I really enjoyed my first foray into the Tourist Trap mysteries. The relationships in the book are sincere. The mystery had plenty of red herrings and a twisty plot. The denouement was truly surprising! After reading Memories and Murder, I will be reading the prior nine books in the series. 5 stars! It is recommended highly for all cozy mystery fans.
Thanks to Kensington Books, Great Escapes Blog Tours, and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
It is amazing anytime I read a cozy book that has food in it (a coffee shop, restaurant, baker, etc) that I don't gain 10 pounds just from reading all the delicious sound dishes. Jill's coffee shop is no exception especially when it is Sadie making the brownies, cookies, and more.
I always enjoy journeying back to South Cove and seeing what is new with Jill, Jackie, Greg, and Amy. This merry bunch of characters keeps me on my toes with their wit and pension to end up involved with the latest case in town. Greg should be involved since he is a police detective, but the others? Not so much. I suppose Jill can't help it that the killer ends up in her sights, but not always on purpose.
This book deals with scams, especially on older citizens. The author does a brilliant job of showcasing potential scams that might trap anyone that isn't aware or watching what is happening to them. Or they prey on emotions as they did with Jackie. While this is common in today's world (sadly), I liked the author's take on that possibility and was quite surprised when everything came to light and who was involved. All I will say is that it is multiple people and at least one of them surprised me.
Sometimes I wish I had Jill's job....being able to read as much as she does but that is a perk (or a curse?) of owning a bookstore.
I am enjoying watching Greg and Jill's relationship continue to progress and maybe one day down the road there will be wedding bells. Only time will tell!
We give this book 5 paws up.
Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is book ten in the Tourist Trap Mystery series. I love returning to South Cove.
Jill is worried about her Aunt Jackie. She has broken her engagement and has been very stand offish. Jill has a speaker at her shop and the topic is elder abuse, warning flags go off and Jill is bound and determined to find out what is going on with her. Then, a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill is on the trail to get to the bottom of what has hit South Cove.
Cahoon does a perfect mix of twists and turns but, also keeps the love of family and friends flowing. You will be kept guessing until the end. The characters are relatable and likeable. And you will want to walk Jill's dog, Emma, on the beach. I also appreciate Cahoon has focused on an all too common problem currently happening to seniors.
I was given an ARC by NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.
Memories and Murder is a Tourist Trap Mystery by Lynn Cahoon which takes us back to Coffee, Books, and More, and proprietor Jill Gardner and her Aunt Jackie. Aunt Jackie is being scammed. She is getting phone calls from her long dead husband, Ted, and it has her so flummoxed that she has broken her engagement to Harrold. She was a lucky woman, she had found love twice and now she was messing it up. No one could understand it-she and Harrold were perfect together, but no one knew about the phone calls. Plus there was a murder for Greg to solve. In Jill's opinion, Ben was a lowlife and not worth worrying about, but murder was illegal. And she could not have Greg charging Ben's girlfriend, Paula, with the murder. She had not done it, Jill was sure.
Jill Gardner is a force to be reckoned with. She has it all: she runs a successful business, she has tons of friends, and she has the love of her life, Greg, a police detective in their little town of South Cove. She is the head of business-to-business council and had just finished listening to a boring but informative talk on elder abuse. Elder abuse takes many forms and in this case it is all about scamming the elderly out of money. Jill and Greg can't let that lie. Greg is a hardworking, smart, loving man. He has friends in his twos subordinates, Toby and Tim. Toby works part time for Jill and lives in a small apartment out back of her house so he can save money. They are both great guys, as is Deek, another part-time employee at CBM. The sales have gone up 10% since he started working and he runs all the book groups. Jill had really lucked out with him! They are a close and loving group living a good life. This is a very fun book (hard to say when murder is involved) broaching a topic that should be important to us all. I highly recommend it, and the entire series.

Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is a wonderful mystery with a touch of real life.
Murder and scamming older people, what is happening in this town?
Jill Gardner
Jill is our sleuth. She is a bit distracted from finding the killer in this one as someone is messing with her Aunt Jackie. However, Jill can't seem to leave a good puzzle alone. So, Jill sets out to find out who and how her Aunt was scammed. It doesn't seem to matter how much her boyfriend, Greg, the police chief, tries to leave out she finds ways to investigate with him.
I like that Jill is protective of her Aunt, but that she also respects her Aunt's wishes. She has the perfect job, owning the local coffee and book store. I also like that Jill nourishes her relationships with honesty. Well, except for Amy's table pieces. She may never get those done.
Mystery
The mystery was good. I liked the way that Ms. Cahoon works real-life events into the fabric of the crime. The murder of someone that no one really knows and then the scamming of the elderly all play their parts to the end result. So, I figured it out a few pages before Jill but never thought that person would do what happened.
Five Stars
I enjoyed the story and was thoroughly entertained. The mystery is superb, the characters are well developed and realistic, and I love the setting. Therefore, I am giving Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon five stars and highly recommending this book and series to all of you who read cozy mysteries.

Memories and Murder is an entertaining and well written mystery. I enjoyed the plot cast of characters. Mystery fans will love this book. I received an arc from the publisher and this is my unbiased review.
Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is the tenth A Tourist Trap Mystery. Jill Gardner owns Coffee, Books and More in South Cove, California where she is currently worried about her Aunt Jackie. Jackie suddenly called off her engagement to Harrold Snider and refuses to explain why. After a little coaxing from Jill, Jackie confesses that she has been getting some disturbing calls. If the identity of this individual is correct, then Jackie could not marry Harrold. Jill had just heard a lecture about elder fraud, and she believes someone is targeting her aunt. Jill contacts her boyfriend, Detective Greg King so they can look into the matter. Unfortunately, a volunteer at the Senior Project is murdered that evening which becomes Greg’s priority. Jill is not one to standby, so she begins to do some sleuthing on her own. Memories and Murder can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. The author provides the necessary background information on the main characters. Memories and Murder is easy to read thanks to the author’s conversational writing style and smooth flow of the story. The mystery was different because it addresses the issue of elder fraud. People, unfortunately, try to take advantage of those who are not as technologically savvy and who are more trusting. Jackie is lucky that she has Jill and such caring friends. Jill is positive that someone is taking advantage of Jackie and she begins going research online as well as talking to some people in town. Jill got lucky when people approached her with information because they had heard of Jackie’s predicament. I would have liked some more active sleuthing on Jill’s part. I enjoyed Deek’s participation and how he added to the case. Deek is a hard worker and a good addition to Jill’s business. I like how everything tied together to provide a satisfying conclusion. I am curious about Jill’s decisions making regarding Coffee, Books and More. Deek will ask to add a book group, and Jill tells him to check with Aunt Jackie since it will happen in the evenings when she works. Since Jill owns the business, I feel she should make the decision. I just found it odd and unfair to Deek since Aunt Jackie is not his biggest fan (yet). There are plenty of cozy moments with Jill enjoying endless cups of coffee, indulging in Sadie’s confections, taking Emma for runs, helping Amy work on her wedding including a disastrous crafting session, time with Greg, talking with new hire Deek, and reading advance reader copies that have been sent to the store. Memories and Murder is a comfortable cozy mystery with curious calls, a mysterious murder, copious quantities of coffee, plentiful pastries, wedding work, a cute canine, and a busy boyfriend.
There's been another murder in South Cove, California. Just the day before, Jill saw the man treating his girlfriend, Paula, who works at the Senior Project, in a way that is all too familiar. So it's not particularly surprising that she's considered a suspect.
It's interesting that this case overlaps with another since Jill's Aunt Jackie has been getting calls from Uncle Theo, a man who supposedly died years ago. Is he still alive or is it someone trying to scam Jackie out of money?
This book was a little more complicated than most Tourist Trap Mysteries - not only is there a murder and a scam, there is a little C story about the mayor and his run for re-election; I have to wonder if Cahoon is setting herself up for the next book.
Three and a half stars

Opinions are my own
Two mysteries and a murder. The question is can Jill Gardner stop her Aunt Jackie from making a terrible mistake before she loses money and so much more. It doesn't help that Jackie is keeping tight-lipped about what is happening. Her investigating is keeping her so busy she almost doesn't have time to snoop around in a murder investigation until she fears that an innocent person is going to be charged.
I enjoyed a lot about this story. The plot is engaging and the realistic characters are people I would like to get to know better. The story also does an excellent job of shining a light on scams focused on cheating elders.
Thanks to Lyrical Underground and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.
