Something strange is going on with Aunt Jackie. Jill can see she is obviously still deeply in love with Harold, her second in a lifetime soulmate, yet the engagement is off and Jackie isn't talking.
The base topic for this installment is Elder Abuse and Fraud, something these characters have had experience with previously. It is tastefully handled and woven skillfully into an intriguing mystery.
The story has an easy paced, conversational flow that makes one relax and fall deeper into the story.
This series has wonderful characters. When they hurt, the reader hurts for them.
I liked that barista Deek played a larger role this time and we got to know him a bit better.
I also enjoyed "running" with Jill's adorable dog.
All of the main female characters are in romantic relationships, although at different stages. I feel this adds depth to the series and appreciate that the romance does not outweigh the crime aspects that I am more interested in. I also enjoy the friendship aspects.
Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is the 10th book in A Tourist Trap Mystery series, and a great addition. Jill Gardner is the owner of Coffee, Books, and More. When Jill's aunt Jackie calls off her wedding to Harrold, and starts acting strange Jill and her police officer boyfriend, Greg, are on the case. This book deals with elder scams, which is a very real problem. I love this series, and was not disappointed by this book. I highly recommend this book/series to all cozy mystery lovers. I also recommend that you read them in order to get the most out of the books.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. Thank you.
Jill is trying to get her Aunt Jackie back into her relationship. Something is going on with her and Jill decides she needs to confront her. Jackie admits that she has been getting phone calls from her dead husband and believes he did not die. Jill believes this is a hoax and a scam, but how to prove it? She enlists some help from the Senior Project and Greg to help Jackie with this problem. In the meantime, a young man who works with the Senior Project is murdered. Jill divides her attention between these two things, but mostly is focused on Aunt Jackie. When things begin to look like the two situations are connected, Greg and Jill are working overtime to figure it all out.
A good read, a good plot and a fun trip to South Cove. This is a great continuation of the series.
After reading the previous book in this series, Killer Party, I was itching to know what was going on with Aunt Jackie, so when I read Memories and Murder, I was completely thrown to find out the truth! In this book, our protagonist Jill is surprisingly less interested in the murder of a local man than she is in unraveling her aunt's big mystery. I had a hard time putting this book down, because both mysteries had me hooked and I couldn't wait to see how it all turned out. I love the characters and the small, seaside town in this series, not to mention Jill's book/coffee shop where they dole out sweet treats made by Jill's friend Sadie. Sadie also plays a more prominent role in this story, which was nice. Like me, you may be surprised by the ending, so if you like mysteries that keep you guessing, this is one for you! I hope this Lynn Cahoon series continues for a long time, because I love the well-written mysteries and realistic, likeable characters.
I received an advance copy of this story. This review contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
What a great story and it deals with a topic we should all be aware of. Unfortunately, the older generation is taken advantage of far too often. When Jill’s Aunt Jackie falls prey, it’s time for Jill to help her out. Course, this isn’t the only problem they have to deal with. Anytime you throw politics into the mix, it’s bound to be interesting. Love these characters and their town. What fun would it be to have a coffee shop/bookstore! I hope you will check this story out and enjoy it as much as I did. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.
Jill the owner of Coffee, Books, and More finds herself involved in two mysteries in Memories and Murder, number 10 in the Tourist Trap Mystery series from Lynn Cahoon. Jill's aunt Jackie has someone making mysterious calls, it is a scam or really someone from her past? Then there is also a murder in the small town of South Cove for her boyfriend Greg to solve.
Light and cozy, even with murder involved, an enjoyable read. It addresses a common problem of con artists scamming the elderly, and both mysteries are tied up neatly in the end. The author's style is to pull you in and make you welcome in the small town oc South Cove. You are as much a part of the circle as any of the other characters are. So pull up a cup of coffee and put your feet up while you enjoy! Thank you #NetGalley for the opportunity of reading #MemoriesandMurder #LynnCahoon
In Memories & Murder, we are finally learning what caused Aunt Jackie to call off her engagement. It caught me off guard and ties into Jill's learning about senior scams. The other question Jill has is, will Jackie take Harrold back? He's certainly interested in resuming their relationship.
In the meantime, a man who worked with a local organization to help seniors has been murdered. Everyone in town is baffled that Jill is not investigating it, but she's caught up with Jackie and helping her. I really enjoyed how that kept recurring and that everyone thought she should be involved (with Greg, her boyfriend, who is the actual detective). There's another side story with the mayor worrying that Greg is going to run for mayor in the next election.
Memories and Murder is a fresh approach to a small town mystery, the senior scams was very relevant to those that occur today as vulnerable people are targeted. I think it would also stand alone very well (always a challenge when you're well into a series). One of the strengths of the Tourist Trap series is the town is far from perfect and so are its people. It makes it a much more realistic small town setting to enjoy, and the mysteries always keep readers on their toes.
Coastal Oregon Cozy Mystery
This book is tenth in a series and stands alone very well. This author knows how to welcome new readers at any point in a series without making it repetitive for long-time fans. The plot moves quickly and is never slow or boring. There are many moving pieces that keep the reader's interest until the final reveal. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.
Reading this book is like visiting old friends. The characters are great and the mystery full of surprises. Just when you think you have it figured out the author throws you a twist. I always look forward to the next book.
An excellent mystery, well written and entertaining.
I loved the well thought and likeable cast of characters, the humour and the setting.
The mystery is solid and kept me guessing till the end.
It's the first book I read in this series and won't surely be the last.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
It is always fun to return to small town South Cove, California on the central coast of the state where there is never a dull moment. Jill Gardner has a perfect job as the owner of Coffee, Books, and More where she works the early shift serving commuters their early coffee and maybe some cheesecake make by her friend Sadie. She has some great help with the shop and her Aunt Jackie keeps everyone in line. Then Jackie breaks off her engagement to shop owner Harrold and she isn't acting her normally feisty self. Then Jill discovers that someone is playing with Aunt Jackie's mind pretending to be her deceased husband. Things may have been tied to the local Senior Project. Sadie's friend Paula works at the Senior Project where it appears that things are fishy after Paula's boyfriend, who volunteers at the center, winds up dead and she is accused of the crime. Jill's boyfriend Police Chief and Detective Greg King is tied up with the murder while Jill, who would normally be all over it, is worried about her aunt and investigating her situation.
This is another great addition to the Tourist Trap Mysteries where you can expect to get hungry as Jill eats lots of cheesecake, brownies, and yummy dishes at Diamond Lille's. There is a whole cast of returning characters that make this series so good and always a great mystery to solve.
I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books and Lyrical Underground through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Memories and Murder
(Tourist Trap Mysteries #10)
by Lynn Cahoon
Kindle Edition
Expected publication: November 12th 2019 by Lyrical Underground
Goodreads synopsis:
It’s October in South Cove, California, and the locals in the quaint resort seem to be happily pairing off in the lull before the holidays. Everyone, that is, except for Jill Gardner’s elderly aunt, who just dumped her besotted fiancé—and she won’t say why.
When Jill hosts a talk at Coffee, Books, and More on the topic of elder abuse, all that’s really on her mind is lunch. But the topic hits close to home when she discovers Aunt Jackie has been getting mysterious calls. Jill’s certain the caller is a con artist, of course, but her feisty aunt claims to understand this, though she’s still shaken—and Harrold’s still heartbroken. Who’s behind the scam and why was her aunt targeted? When a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill’s detective boyfriend is on the case—and it soon becomes clear no one is safe when a caller from beyond becomes a killer in their midst.

This is the tenth book in the Tourist Trap mystery series by Lynn Cahoon.
This is my guilty pleasure series! I am so excited to dive back into the Tourist Trap saga with a full novel. Cahoon has been teasing us with novellas for the last few releases. So seeing this made my heart cheer!
In some ways I felt like I should have gone back and read the last few novel length books. I was shocked that Toby had broken up with his girl. When did that happen? Maybe I blocked it out. I always want these characters to have their dreams. And Jill and Greg are now officially living together and in some ways he is more closed mouthed than ever regarding his police cases. Thank goodness for her friendly neighborhood psychic, Esmerelda who always seems to keep Jill clued in on who’s who and what’s what.
We didn’t spend too much time at Coffee, Books and More during this read which made me frown but isn’t always as necessary as my brain thinks it should be. I liked seeing the newer barista/employee, Deek Kerr show up so often. And due to his breakup, Toby is still taking up residence in the shed out back he has fashioned into his own version of a man cave. This series has such a cool cast that every time I pick up a new book I feel like I am coming home.
The main thrust of the story within features Jill’s Aunt Jackie. She has broken up with her beau, Harrold, owner of The Train Station, on the eve of their coming nuptials. Jackie is getting phone calls from a man who claims he is her dead husband come to life. Jill is worried Jackie might be sending this masquerade man money and keeping her on the hook in his nefarious scheme. So it is up to Jill to prove to Jackie that her husband is truly dead and that Harrold is the perfect man to walk down the isle with. She is on the case.
This is a must read series for me. So jump on the reading train with me and travel to the tourist trap town of South Cove. Stay a little while. Read all the previous books. Get caught up. A reading marathon is always a good thing. Start with book one, GUIDEBOOK TO MURDER.
If you love cozy mysteries, then definitely pick up this series. Cahoon also has another series that is equally as obsession-worthy featuring Cat Latimer. You can’t go wrong with any of Lynn Cahoon’s series. She keeps me up at night reading the hours away!
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
For cozy mystery readers who love their coffee, this is a good one! Good sleuthing and I liked the characters very much.
This was a great mystery. I couldn't figure out whodunnit and couldn't stop reading until the end. I loved how the characters leaned on each other. I felt that one of the themes concerned new beginnings and looking towards the future, something I am doing. I can't wait until the next mystery in this series. I received an advanced reader's copy from NetGalley for my honest review.
Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is the tenth book in Tourist Trap Mystery series but can be read as a standalone.
This is the first book that I have read in this series and I had no problem following the story.
Jill Gardner runs a book and coffee store with her aunt Jackie, who has all of a sudden broken her engagement with a great guy. After much hoaxing aunt Jackie admits that she has been getting calls from her husband, who has been dead for a long time.
Jill gets her boyfriend Greg, is the police chief in their lovely beach side town, to investigate. Then there is a murder of an acquaintance's boyfriend that has everyone baffled.
Jill with the help of her friends and her boyfriend can't help but get involved to solve this puzzle.
I liked this book, it is easy to read and the story flows nicely. Many charming protagonists, with the beautiful setting and adorable dog.
However, I didn't get the impression that main protagonist did any sleuthing at all. She had ceaseless cups of coffee and great food, did at lot of reading but investigated very little in my opinion. Most of the information she got from other people but without her asking question, as is the usual way sleuths obtain information.
Regardless, it was light and entertaining and I got to know a lovely town with likable characters that I will go back to.
I always enjoy a new adventure featuring protagonist Jill Gardner, owner of a cool coffee shop/bookstore in the small coastal town of South Cove. There are many likable characters in the Tourist Trap series such as Jill’s fiancé, Detective Greg King; her best friend Amy; her Aunt Jackie; ant the handsome baristas who help run the shop.
Aunt Jackie has everyone worried since she broke her engagement to Harrold Snider, who owns a shop across the street from Coffee, Books, and More. When Jill finally finds out why, she and Greg are, at once, shocked and suspicious. Author, Lynn Cahoon blends an intricate plot relating to elder crime and how easily one can be set up to become a scammer’s meal ticket. The story is interesting and educational and the culprit wasn’t easy for me to single out. Memories & Murder is a great addition to this long-running series!
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington. Thank you. This is an unbiased, honest review.
How cruel can con artists be when they target our elder citizens trying to get their meager savings away from them?
In this latest of the Tourist Trap mysteries, Aunt Jackie is contacted by her "supposed" dead husband asking for help - of course, needing money. Jill has been looking into the Senior Project, an organization to help the elderly with problems so when a volunteer from the Senior Project is murdered and the victim had the skills to be the con artist, Jill feels the need to find out just who really is a victim.
This is one of my absolute favorite series - the setting is restful and calming while the characters are energitc and entertaining and the mysteries just get better and better!
Who's calling Aunt Jackie claiming to be her deceased husband Ted? This may be a tourist trap mystery but Cahoon has hit on a topical and distressing reality- the exploitation of seniors. Jackie broke up with her boyfriend Harold, who is very distressed. Then Paula Woods, who works for the senior center and has been outspoken about elder abuse, is a suspect when her boyfriend Ben is murdered. Jill's boyfriend Greg, a detective, of course cautions her to stay away but, as can be expected, she pokes around. Thanks to net galley for the ARC. This has a good plot line, well developed characters and will make you think twice about answering your phone.
Another excellent edition to a wonderful series! Full of twists and turns that leaves you wanting more and enjoying each moment until the end when the killer is caught!
This time Jill is investigating a case closer to home. Someone calls her Aunt Jackie saying he is her late husband. No one messes with family. With help from her friends she try’s to find out who is running a scam on her aunt. Another great addition to the series.
