This is the second in the series, and I absolutely LOVED it. The romance is real and organic, the characters are strong, the plot is twisty and detailed, but you don't get lost. This time, gunnie Rose is with a new crew, protecting a crate. She runs into her sometimes guy when all hell breaks loose, and it never stops after that. Throw in some racism, gunfights, and a few miracles, and you've got yourself a good old Dixie mess.
I can't wait for the next one, as I really hope it ends up in the Russian region next.
I've always been a fan of Charlaine Harris ever since I started reading the Sookie Stackhouse series, so I was excited to hear about this one.
Lizbeth Rose is hired to do another job, one she thought would be straight forward job but it didn't turn out as she expected.
The book is a fast pace, action-packed book. I love her writing and loved the story.
A Longer Fall (Gunnie Rose #2) by Charlaine Harris
In this second book of the Gunnie Rose series, our favorite Gunnie, Lizbeth, is hired on to a crew that is protecting a crate as it is shipped by train to Dixie. As the train is about to arrive, the track is blown and the train derails. A gun battle follows; her team is out of commission. The crate is stolen. In the aftermath, Eli arrives and Lizbeth discovers there is more to the crate and the town of Sally than she first realized. Eli and Lizbeth join forces once again to retrieve the crate and help the people of Sally. The action is fast-paced and there is always a bit of magic involved. A great read!

A Longer Fall is the second book in the Gunnie Rose series. Lizbeth is a hired gun who has taken a job protecting some cargo headed to Dixie, a place in the South that has regressed over a hundred years. Lizbeth has to discern who to trust as she is attacked by dark forces that seem to be after her cargo.
This magical action adventure by the amazing Charlaine Harris was hard to put down. It is a combination of adventure, dystopia, magic, and fantasy with a touch of romance thrown in. I will definitely read new books in the series as they come out.
As a long time fan of Ms. Charlaine Harris...from Dead Until Dark to the Aurora Teagarden series, I was excited to read another of Ms. Harris' works. I only slightly didn't fully read the description when requesting this book...I didn't realize it was a sequel. But you're never at a disadvantage if you put your mind to it. (Which I did.)
I loved this book. After I finished it, without reading the first, I went and purchased the ebook of the first and read both back to back. The references to the first book were better understood this way. But still reader error only.
Grammar was great, writing was great, story was great...I want more!
I also low key want to meet Ms. Harris someday.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me review this most excellent novel. And Ms. Harris thank you for giving me yet another world to fall in love with. ...how do you do it every time?

Wow, this was really great! The right amount was f action, the right amount of steaminess. Harris just gets better and better as each series develops!
Right off the bat, we find Gunnie Rose (Lizbeth Rose) back at it again on a train heading to Texoma with a new gunnie crew guarding a crate with unknown contents. She's back to doing what she's oh so good at after the unfortunate events from the pervious book. Unfortunately for her it seems she can't catch a break. While on her way to Texoma her train is literally blown up not too far from her intended destination. What started out as a relatively easy job turns into something much more complicated. This is where we also meet Eli Savrov once again and together they set out on a new mission.
I love the nonstop action-- there is never a dull moment in the entire book--- , the fact that the alternative history does not shy away from racism andI love Lizbeth herself. She's loyal, courageous, fiercely independent and all out a great protagonist . It's interesting seeing her trying to navigate Texoma rigid social structure while still trying to be loyal to herself and her values. The relationship between Eli and Lizbeth is organic and natural and it's wonderful to see it play out.
I recommend reading the first book from the series to better understand the world and characters. I cannot wait to see more of this new world and to see where life takes Gunnie Rose especially after that cliffhanger.
Many thanks to Saga Press / Gallery and LJ from Publicity and Marketing for a digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley and the opportunity to provide an honest review
I very much enjoyed this book! The characters are relatable and enjoyable and the pace is fast. I had a hard time putting this down. This alt-history story blends facts with fiction in an undeniably entertaining way.
A Longer Fall is the second novel in the Gunnie Rose series by Charlaine Harris. And it’s a novel that I’ve been eagerly waiting for all year. Gunnie Rose is an alternate history fantasy series; one that is full of Gunnies, magic, and fighting.
After losing her last crew, Lizbeth Rose has had to find a new crew to work with. But the job she took on with them ends up being a lot more complicated – and dangerous – than she was lead to believe. Now Lizbeth has to protect the cargo and help the town she was meant to deliver it to. And that’s only the beginning of this tale.
Lizbeth Rose is a Gunnie. That means she shoots people for a living. She doesn’t do it for fun. But she’ll do it should they threaten the people or cargo she’s been hired to protect. And she’s an excellent shot too – so I’d advise against the idea. She’s also a compassionate woman, one who knows where her strengths lay, and isn’t afraid to ask for help when needed.
“So I needed a new crew. Jake had needed another shooter. Here I was. This was not the job I’d have picked for my first one back, but it was better than none.”
Warnings: A Longer Fall contains several intense subjects. Fans of the series are already well aware of the setting, and thus how bad things can get. This novel covers subjects such as prejudice and slavery, sexism, and torture.
I’ve been waiting and looking forward to A Longer Fall for over a year now. And I’ve got to say, it was completely worth the wait. My only regret is that I’ll now have to wait another year (at least) before I can get my hands on the next book!
A Longer Fall was everything I had been hoping for, and then some. It was intense, being full of fights, drama, and tension. It brought back one of my favorite characters, Lizbeth Rose, in all of her glory. But naturally, things have to change. And that means she’s had to join a new crew. I was surprised by some of the decision making here, but I’ve got to admit that it led to a brilliant plot.
The setup for A Longer Fall was well done. There’s a little bit of rehashing for those of us with less than stellar memories. But it probably isn’t enough to fill in any new readers to the series. So seriously, take a minute to go read An Easy Death first. You won’t regret it.
There were some elements I was surprised by. I wasn’t at all surprised (or disappointed) to see Eli make his appearance once again. But I was surprised by the way Harris wrote in some of what I’d consider to be more classic romantic (or is it romantic comedy?) tropes into the mix. I didn’t mind them, because it was interesting and funny. But I can see why it might have bothered some people (though I’m hoping I’m wrong there).
And oh! That ending. While the main plot was actually completely wrapped up, I’ve found myself left with about a million and ten questions. And thus I’m extremely anxious (that doesn’t even begin to cover it, actually) for the next book to come out. It’s going to be a long wait this time around!
Ms Harris NEVER disappoints. I was approved for this book without reading the first. Then her publisher emailed me about a good deal on the first ebook and I jumped on it.
Now I have a new series to anxiously await for new books to be added.
I love the writing, the simple elegance of the storytelling, and the wonderfully strong HEROINE in the story.
The story is separate yet, still in line with the first book in the series. It adds new characters and ties ups some loose threads from the first book.
I hope that the third book will see Gunnie going to the Holy Roman Empire to see her sister.
Overall, another WONDERFULLY written book and series that will please the fans of Charlaine Harris!
This book is set in an alternate USA.One where Roosevelt was killed and the country divided into different colonies
.Gunnie Rose along with a posse of hired guns is escorting a crate to Dixie.
This book is sort of a fantasy Wild West adventure mix.
I liked it but want to read book 1 to kinda close a few gaps.
Book does well as a stand-alone
Thankyou Netgalley for this ARC
Absolutely loved! Charlaine Harris has done it again with this new series. The second book in this series kept me guessing for a long time. I love that she included a very, very important social message while not hampering the story. I would definitely recommend this for any fan of the author.
I'm a long time fan of Charlaine Harris. Long before True Blood. I've enjoyed each of the series I've read. I missed An Easy Death, the first book in the Gunnie Rose series, but have purchased it and am anxious to get caught up. I only had a few minor times when I wished I had read book one first. For the most part, A Longer Fall works well as a stand alone.
I don't know how to describe Harris's style but it's very matter of fact. Her characters are not generally flamboyant and in your face. They're almost come across as just normal people dealing with normal lives when the truth is anything but. Like Sookie Stackhouse and Lily Bard, Lizabeth Rose is faced with so much and calmly and quietly steps up to the challenge.
Harris creates an interesting society very different from our own and yet with many of the same issues. She's done a good job of creating the people and places in a way that makes the reader "experience" them.
There's a bit of romance, as expected, but as with Harris's other books, the story is not mainly a romance and there's not HEA...yet. There is enough romance between Lizbeth and Eli to add a sweet side to the suspenseful tale. And suspenseful permeates the story from beginning to end. A Longer Fall is a gripping story and I recommend it.
I love Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse and Midnight TX series. The Aurora Teagarden are not as interesting for me personally and this seems to fall into that category. I think i should read the first in this series to have a clearer understanding of the characters.
I am going to read the first one and revise this review but as a standalone it didn’t draw me in.
It wasn’t what I would expect from this author, but overall was fast read, packed with action sequences.
A bit hard to understand, if you haven’t read the first book, set in a fantasy world resembling this one
A Longer Fall is book two in Harris’ Gunnie Rose series which envisions an alternate reality where President Roosevelt was assassinated and the country broke apart into smaller ones with the east coast (12 of the 13 original colonies) aligning with Britain and the West Coast becoming the new Holy Russian Empire loyal to the Tsar and filled with orders of Grogori (magicians).
Lizbeth Rose (or Gunnie Rose as she is known) hails from Texoma, a new nation created out of Texas and Oklahoma and is a fierce gunwoman despite her small stature. Here, Rose sets out on a railroad with a new posse she just joined up with to protect a crate on its way to Dixie, the new country made up of the former Southern states.
The beginning of the book is a major blast and yes literally a blast. The action of the posse and in carrying out its task and recovering from what happens is great action-packed writing. After that, the plot line sort of peters out, losing its purpose.
This series has great promise from its alternate universe, which really isn’t taken advantage of so much in this novel, to the great characterization and narrative voice of the one and only Lizbeth Rose.
Although I didn't read the first in the trilogy I thoroughly enjoyed this book who doesn't like Ms. Harris' books. Another entertaining book by the author. You may not like the characters but you sure will like the story.
An excellent alternate reality Western and romance and mystery. The second in a new series by Harris, A Longer Fall finds a team of hired guns embroiled in a job that unexpectedly involves the Holy Russian Empire, civil rights issues and rebellions, and magic. This is a richly imagined and detailed world full of nuance and thought and great characters. I need to go back and read the first in the series while waiting for another installment.
I quite enjoy the alternative history setting, and Lizbeth is an interesting combination of worldly and innocent. Looking forward to the next in the series.
The Sookie Stackhours series was one of my favorites growing up so I had such high hopes for Harris' newest series! I have to say, I was not crazy about the first book and did not plan on continuing with the series. But when this one came up for review, I decided to give it one more shot. I am so glad that I did, I LOVED this one! I could never complain about the author's writing, she totally brings her stories to life. Excited for the next book in the series!
