Why You Should Be a Socialist was a bit of a let down for me. While it was well written, I felt overall it didn't answer the question that the title asked "why should you be a socialist?". I had a lot of issues with this book and since they are all political and social.... I'll keep them to myself.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is exactly what the title suggests: a nonfiction accounting of what Socialism and its different versions mean and the socialist views of utopia. The author has obviously thought a lot about the topic and done some excellent research from a variety of sources. With examples from both history and current events, it is very convincing and could likely end the use of the word socialist as a put down. I would absolutely recommend this book for anyone interested in what Socialism is, especially those who are skeptical.
This book is a review of the current political and economic situation, and defines the terminology of democratic vs socialism vs all the other ideologies. I just don't think I am the right audience for the topic as I already drank the koolaid. The book would be better for a college or high school level student to learn more about current affairs.
A boomer friend of mine recently asked me if "all you young people" really want a socialist society. I said I couldn't speak for seneral entire generations (I'm almost 30), but that personally all I was dead certain of was that "I'm real tired of capitalism."
In Why You Should Be A Socialist, Robinson approaches a topic that has the capacity to overwhelm, depress, confuse, and bore with an incredible amount of humor, compassion, and clarity. The arguments are levelheaded and cover and discuss several common counterarguments.
I'm still not sure I identify as a socialist, but this book is an incredible read and I highly recommend it.
And jfc, there are no words for the depths to which I despise Ayn Rand.
This dreadful book must be avoided at all costs! Nathan Robinson is a very snarky writer who owes little or no allegiance to the truth. He regularly ignores the facts and makes up statistics that are meaningless. His book is a tidal wave of fantasy and distortion. I would give Why You Should Be a Socialist zero stars if I could.
Too much information presented in a very strange format. The information was all over the place. I can not recommend this book.
An interesting and well written book, with clear explanations and examples.
I liked the style of writing and appreciated the author's ideas.
Recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
This is a great resource for anyone that has questions about socialism and the impact it has. So many people have a negative view and don’t know much about it. The author really broke down the benefits of socialism in easy to understand language. Highly recommend!
