Skylar Long is fleeing her abusive boyfriend. More by instinct than planning, she's arrived in her old home town just in time for local sheriff and high school crush Danny Oldman to rescue her and arrest the boyfriend who has pursued her and finally caught up with her.
What she doesn't know, but they both soon discover, is that Matt Gaudette's wealthy and connected family has been covering up his "indiscretions" since he was in high school. Matt never willingly lets any woman go, and this time he's absolutely determined that either Skylar comes back to him, or no one else will get her--ever.
This is the fourth in the Heart of Texas series, so readers of previous books will be familiar with Danny's friends. These include a ranch-owning family who place a high value on both friendship and security, an impressively badass woman lawyer, and former members of the various US military Special Forces. Matt Gaudette doesn't have friends, exactly, but he does have money, and has been doing this for years, so he knows where to buy all the skills he needs to be a major threat to Skylar, Danny, and anyone else who annoys him.
I love Danny and his friends, and Skylar, too. Despite her absolute need for help and support in this crisis, she's by no mean a helpless damsel in distress. She's a strong, determined woman, and has skills and resources of her own. At no point does the story simplify or understate the problem of domestic abuse, and the challenges women face in trying to get away from their abusers. At the same time, it remains an enjoyable, satisfying romance.
Recommended.
I received a free electronic of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.
I hate admitting this, but I did not finish this book. I tried 3 times, and just couldnt connect with these characters. I read a few chapters, then another book, and came back to this one, still nothing, twice. I probably made it 35-40% in and was just bored by it. I finally decided it was silly to spent my time reading something that just isn't holding my interest. I've probably only not finished a total of 4 books in the hundreds that I've read. I always want to give it a fair chance, but at a certain point I just had to cut my losses. I dont think it was poorly written, it just wasn't for me.
I love to read small town romances. Add some strong characters and a great plot and I call that perfect. Author Donna Grant has all that and more in this book, A Cowboy Like You. Skylar Long was desperate to escape from her abusive boyfriend. She ran and he followed her. She pulled into a rest stop where Sheriff Danny Oldman was in his truck enjoying the view and eating his dinner. When Skylar's ex pulled into the rest stop and assaulted her it was a good thing Danny was there to save her. Skylar and Danny had gone to high school together and Danny had a crush on Skylar back then. The attraction is still there. Can Danny keep Skylar safe and will Cupid's arrow strike to lead to a HEA for Skylar and Danny?
I really liked this story and meeting Skylar and Danny. This is an excellent series and I hope Donna Grant writes more stories in this series.
The fourth book has the sheriff Danny Oldman who is still single, and being has brought him to a rest stop to eat his dinner. Tired of eating alone at least is has something to look at. It is then that he hears a commotion to the side and sees a man smashing a car window as he is yelling at the woman inside, he also makes threats to her and strikes her. Once he arrests said man he realizes that he and the woman know each other. Skylar Long has been wanting to get away from her boyfriend for a while now and now she has run to a town where she once felt at peace. She was not expecting to see Danny and for him to be sheriff, even though the last part did not surprise her for he was always helping someone when they were younger. After the arrest of her boyfriend, it is revealed that he comes from a wealthy family in Houston and everything he told her was false. Dealing with him and his family hiring an attorney she also finds that she has feelings for Danny and he has them for her. Really what this story is about is what can and does happen to women who are stalked by ex’s and it must be terrifying for them and a piece of paper will not stop them though you have to start there. Overall a very good book.
Donna Grant knows how to write stories about cowboys with hearts of gold, loyals and protective of their family. This time, Danny Oldman is going to face his past and never let it go. When Skylar came back to town after so many years, he knew that he won’t be able to stay away. That woman brought his protectiveness to such a level, something he hadn't felt for anyone. Excepted for his friends.
In this fourth installment of Heart of Texas series, the author wrote a poignant story about abuse with intense drama and great suspense. I appreciated the different POV, the suspense was moving full speed, and the villain has somehow the upper hand.
Skylar and Danny’s story was moving. A long lasting journey when their two young selves have felt more than friendly feelings but never acting on it. It took an abuse ex boyfriend to bring them together. When everything felt right when they were together. Regardless of the danger, this powerful connection was their strength.
Once again you can count on his friends to stand by his side. To protect her like their own. When they were all together, they could do anything.
I adored this story, emotional, caring and heartfelt. Can’t wait to read more!
A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant is the fourth novel in the Heart of Texas and takes place around the holiday season. For fans of the series, Sheriff Danny Oldman gets his story. Suspenseful with a side dish of romance, Grant delivered a page-turner.

really liked it
Thanks to the publisher for an ARC to read and give my honest opinion.
I’m a fan of this author’s Dragon and Reaper series....so imagine my surprise to a Heart of Texas romance. Friends through high school Danny and Skylar meet years later during one of Skylars lowest moments. Danny is now law enforcement and Skylar is in an abusive relationship that she’s try to leave.
What did I like? This is obviously a series with intertwined characters because small towns band together and the friend’s Danny has, are more than willing to help Skylar. Danny recognizes Skylar and now understands its now or never to disclose his feelings for her. I just love HEA books.
Would I buy this book? Series? This is nothing like the author’s other series but as a romance it stands firmly on its own. I think her Dragon series are better, and so I am prejudiced. I limit my book cash monthly so if it was a contest Dragons would win. It’s a sweet series though.
Thoughts for the author? Where was I when books one through three came out? Thanks again for allowing me a copy.
A second chance romance and HEA all in one! Danny, a law enforcement officer, is lonely, drinking more than he should in his off duty hours, and missing having a family. When he finds a man abusing a woman, he steps in and discovers she is Skylar, a woman he loved and lost as a younger man. Skylar has been living in Houston but she's trying to escape from Matt, a rich, powerful, obsessive abuser who has more or less taken over her life. Danny helps her deal not only with Matt but also his family (what a pack of creeps). Starting over becomes a bit easier when these two slowly come back to the place they were before Skylar left home. This is an easy read- the bad guys are bad, the romance is gentle, and there is, of course, an HEA. Don't worry if you haven't read others in this linked series- it's perfectly fine as a standalone. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. A nice read for a lazy day.

I have read all the Heart of Texas stories, and A Cowboy Like You has become my favourite.
Whilst it has all the trademarks of a lovely, sweet "cowboy" romance, it deals with some real life issues that so many are going through every day.
Danny and Skylar's story is beautiful and sexy, however it is hard and heartbreaking at the same time.
I don't want to give too much away about how things got to where they are, but just know that what Skylar is running from will get you right in the feels.
Danny is a knight with a shining badge. You can't help but love the guy.
It was great to see the couples from the previous books and to get an insight to where they are now.
There are so many great guys in these books, and I need to learn all of their stories!
Hold on to your hats, because this stoic, lonely cowboy will steal your heart! Sheriff Danny Oldman’s priority is keeping people in his rural Texas county safe, but no number of calls and hours on the job can ease his loneliness, in spite of the close friends he has. When his high school crush finds her way back to Lone Star, however, everything changes.
Skylar Long put Lone Star, Texas, in the rearview mirror for the excitement of the big city soon after high school, but she finds herself right back there as she flees her abusive boyfriend. He follows her down the highway to a rest stop, but Sheriff Oldman is there to intervene, and Danny vows to keep Skylar safe as she uses the legal system to permanently rid herself of her ex and his family's affluence and old money.
This one has everything I love in a good cowboy romance. A small-town charm with unbreakable bonds between friends. A strong, protective hero who will do anything for those he loves. A sultry romance with an air of suspense that keeps me riveted to the page and cheering on the characters. It brings me back to my cowboy romance roots courtesy of Carolyn Brown and BJ Daniels, and Danny and Skylar owned my heart from the first page to the last. Plan your next cowboy adventure with them, because I have no doubt you’ll love this one as much as I do!

A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant was terrific! This is Danny and Skylar’s story. It is a bit of a second chance love story, and very well written. I loved the story and highly recommend this book. Donna Grant is such a good writer and I always enjoy her books.
This story grabbed me from the first chapter. I did not want to have to put it down. The story flows smoothly, has well developed characters, deals with real-world issues, and puts it all together seamlessly. We meet the two main characters; one is a small county Sheriff and the other was the Sheriff's crush in high school. They meet for the first time since high school graduation; almost ten years later, under very unsavory conditions. Due to the Sheriff's honesty and real caring, he is surrounded by a wonderful support team in his friends and colleagues. These friends don't hesitate to come the Sheriff's aid when needed. The author's writing made me want to care about these characters and route them on to their HEA. I recommend this story to those that enjoy a good intrigue story sprinkled with romance.
I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read all of this series but the first book and I need to go back and read Clayton and Abby’s book soon.
This is a friend of the family’s hea. Danny the local sheriff and a old flame from high school, Skylar. They had feelings for each other but never acted on them. Skylar left for the big city and never returned. When Skylark need help the most Danny was there to help. Danny knew he was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and he also knew his life was about to chance.
If Danny can keep Skylar safe they just might have the future they both crave.

I really, really liked Sheriff Danny Oldman. He’s a great guy. He’s devoted to his job and his friends, and his friends are devoted to him. He truly is a hero. He deserved the best of everything. If I had liked Skylar just a little, I might have given this book 5 stars.
I thought Skylar was a silly piece of work, the poster child for bad decisions. First, she couldn’t wait to leave her small hometown to chase the excitement of a big city. After nothing but short term “relationships”, if you can call them that, she finally hooks the big fish...a rich, handsome, charming man who can offer her the world. Oops. He’s also a mean, abusive, controlling a$$hole! When she flees from him, she runs right back to the hometown she couldn’t stand and back into the life of Sheriff Danny, the boy who had loved her since high school, dragging him and his friends into her drama.
But superb writing and storytelling, saved this book. That and the delicious Danny Oldman. There was a little more talk about the dynamics of abuse than I wanted in a story, I hear it on news reports almost daily. It wasn’t really necessary, and got just a bit preachy at times. The action and suspense as Danny fought to keep Skylar safe was intense and well done. Overall, I think most lovers of romantic suspense will like this book, so pick up a copy and...
Enjoy! ARC graciously provided by St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for an honest and voluntary review.
Actually, the hero in the story isn’t a cowboy, but the sheriff in a Texas hometown. He’s thrown into a fight to save the woman he had a crush on in high school when she flees back from Houston to try to escape her abusive boyfriend. Luckily for her, he has all sorts of friends with special skills to help protect her as they go after the ex and his wealthy family.
It’s all rather predictable, but still enjoyable.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
Skylar ran from her abusive boyfriend to the town she grew up in ... the one she couldn’t wait to get away from after graduation. But when her boyfriend finds her and assaults her, she didn’t think it would be in front of the town’s sheriff ... and that the sheriff was Danny, an old friend. Danny couldn’t get over seeing Skylar again, especially being beaten by her boyfriend. And he certainly didn’t think that all those feelings he had for her back in the day, would come back full force ... but they sure did. Now he just has to protect her from her ex and his rich family.
The story was good, but predictable. The characters were likeable ... but I didn’t fall in love with them. Even though Skylar knew Danny was a good guy ... I found it hard to believe that she would jump into bed with someone days after escaping an abusive relationship. But the ending was thrilling with a little twist.
I received an early copy courtesy of St Martin’s Press through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
A Cowboy Like You is the 4th book in the Heart of Texas series.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I will say that I liked it. It did feel more of 3.5 star book to me. It had action, drama and a little romance. It told the story of Danny and Skylar. Danny is the sheriff of a small town. Skylar is trying to escape her abusive boyfriend when she ends up in the same parking lot where Danny is enjoying his solitary meal. He witnesses Skylar being attacked by her boyfriend, Matt. Danny has Matt arrested and this kicks off the story. Danny feels compelled to help Skylar since they knew each other in high school and Danny had a crush on her during those years. During the story we see Skylar go through a lot because of finally reporting Matt to the authorities after some time of being abused by Matt. I liked how she had support from people that she hardly knew and that they treated her as family. They all seemed aware of how special she was to Danny.
I would of liked for more romance, but police procedural and drama were very well written. I liked that the author wrote some scenes from Matt's POV. We saw how unstable he was and what he was willing to do to get Skylar back.
The amount of characters was a little overwhelming at times, but not having read the previous three books I guess that's why it felt like that to me.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.
Skylar Long flees to her hometown after being abused by the man she thought she loved, Matt Gaudet. When Matt follows her and tries to force her to return to him, Sheriff Danny Oldman arrests him. Skylar was Danny’s high school crush, although he never acted on his feelings for her. The Gaudet family are extremely wealthy and are used to buying their way out of trouble, but what they are not aware of is the many former military friends Danny has and their ability to protect Skylar. When Matt continues his brutal attempts to make Skylar his, how far will Danny and his friends have to go to keep her safe? A courageous woman who will no longer stand for being abused, a man who will protect her at all costs and a small town coming together to protect their own. “A Cowboy Like You” by Donna Grant
Wow, what a story. It is a contemporary romance with an abundance of suspense. I couldn’t wait to see how the story would unfold. There is some ‘spice’ and some ‘violence’ and an insight into the world of .. well I will stop there… when you read the story you will understand. I hate it when someone tells too much about a story. I want to find out the important details for myself. I received an ARC of this story from the publisher with a request for an honest review. This review is my honest opinion. If the book blurb caught your eye and you like well written romance-suspense novels, then I believe you will like this story just as much as I did. Happy Reading ! !
A Cowboy Like You has a seamlessly blend of suspense and second chance romance which is set in a small town. There’s a good flow to the story that drew me in and kept me engaged. I liked the storyline and the characters. I especially liked the group of friends who have each other backs.
Note: This can be read completely as a stand-alone read and you will not be lost with not having read the prior books in the series (but if you like western romances, I recommend all of them).
