I just couldn’t feel the love for this romantic suspense novel. While the writing itself is solid and the premise is interesting, the execution left something to be desired. Most of Danny and Skylar’s interactions revolve around her ex and they don’t actually spend much time together, but that doesn’t stop them from having (unprotected) sex just 2-3 days after he rescued her from an abusive relationship or talking about forever shortly after that. I found this problematic on a variety of levels and it colored my opinion of the whole book.
The story follows Danny, a sheriff who drinks to forget how lonely and unsatisfying his life is. He’s married to his job and doesn’t date much because he can’t seem to forget about his high school crush, Skylar. Skylar comes back into his life in a big way when Danny aids her in leaving her abusive boyfriend. As a natural protector, Danny helps Skylar hide from her ex while trying to make sure he doesn’t get away with the abuse. Being together stirs up old feelings and it isn’t long before these two are falling into bed and starting a relationship - which only complicates matters with Skylar’s ex.
I did enjoy parts of the book, but the abuse storyline really takes over. There is some suspense and a bit of angst as Skylar attempts to move forward with her life. But the speed at which she does so is a little unsettling. Things escalate between Skylar and Danny with shocking speed despite the fact that they really don’t know much about what their lives are like now (for example: that Danny is a borderline alcoholic whose days revolve around his work). It’s these issues that overtake a book that had a lot of potential. I appreciated receiving an ARC from NetGalley, but this one didn’t work for me. I am voluntarily leaving a review of this suspenseful book.
This is the first book I've read from Donna Grant and it definitely will not be the last!!!
I loved Danny & Skylar's story so much.
The story had so much passion with suspence thrown in along with such strong characters.
Whats not to love!!
I'll be looking out for Donna Grants work
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the e-ARC to read and review.
For my first cowboy-romance, "A Cowboy Like You" was a pretty good read. Such a sweet romance for the season (though the story is set in December). I was really invested in the story and all of the characters involved.
Skylar is a kind, independent woman who has unfortunately become the victim of an abusive relationship. But as much as I like her, she was a kind of a flat and static character. She does however demonstrate a positive/hopeful outlook for others who may be in a similar situation through her words and actions. Her first step is a powerful one.
I have to say I was skeptical throughout the story. Skylar was fortunate that Danny, the county sheriff and old classmate became involved in her situation. But everything that preceded was almost...too perfect. Not unrealistic but more like...too good to be true (very slim odds) for lack of better words. Because it seemed almost too perfect it appeared to follow a basic general outline of a domestic violence case with sugar sprinkled on top. I don't know. I just couldn't shake the skepticism.
I do like that this story had a "pack-ish" vibe; same as what you get in all of Donna Grant's other books. Every character was so loving and warm and open - a huge tight-nit family mentality. And Danny is just the most perfect human being that I am head over heels for.
This is book 4 of the Heart of Texas and I haven't read the other three book (woops!). But I'd be interested in reading those as well. Overall, I enjoyed "A Cowboy Like You."
Danny Oldman is the Sheriff of his small town. Skylar Long is from Danny's small down and, never thought she would ever come back.
Now, Skylar has returned to try to get away from her horribly abusive ex-boyfriend.. Little to Skylar and Danny realize that the feelings that they had for each other since high school have never gone away. Problem is that Skylar's ex-boyfriend is determined to get Skylar back and, if he can;t, to make sure no one else gets her!!! A family with endless money and,, a determination to keep their political power unblemished will also do anything to keep Danny's illegal stalker behavior out of the news makes it so much harder for Skylar to get away, permanently,
Can Skylar and Danny stay safe and alive, or will her crazy ex-boyfriend win again??
This is an action packed book that you won't want to put down!!!
And Donna Grant has done it again!!!!! This book was so good I didn't want to put it down, loved every minute of it. It was so well written & kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, as well as keeping me on a roller coaster of emotions. Danny & Skylar were incredible together, their strength & belief in each other was amazing. Skylar was truly awesome with her determination not to be controlled by her abusive ex-boyfriend & also in the fact that she was determined to see him pay for what he did to her. Danny was amazing when he fought for Skylar & sexy as sin as he professed his love for her. I loved these two together & the fact that they both had crushes on each other in high school made it even more swoon worthy & increased the drama level with the mentally unstable ex-boyfriend. It was also wonderful to see everyone together again & getting caught up in them again. Definitely recommend this book & series. I'm definitely excited to see who the next book will be about...can't wait.
Sheriff Danny Oldman is married to his job. He never once forgot about his high school crush. Danny witnesses an altercation and steps in to defuse the situation. The woman involved is none other than Skylar Long, the one who got away. Danny risks everything, including his career, to protect Skylar from her fanatical ex. Will Danny take advantage of his second chance with Skylar? Can he keep her from becoming another statistic?
Skylar Long returns to her hometown to escape an abusive relationship. When her ex-boyfriend assaults her, she is rescued by the local sheriff. Skylar fondly remembers Danny from their high school years. However, she never expects their long dormant attraction to flare to life. Skylar’s obsessive ex threatens to ruin their budding relationship. Can Skylar and Danny thwart her ex-boyfriend and his powerful family? Or will she be forced to live a life of fear?
I am so happy that Danny finally received his deserved happily-ever-after. He is such a selfless man, who often ignores his own health and needs in order to help others in need. I admire Danny’s integrity. He believes in following procedures, the right way, to solve his cases regardless of the outcome. Danny understands the system fails more people than it helps, but he still believes in it. What I like the most about Danny is his belief in his friends. He knows his friends would help him with any grim situation that arises. They always have his back regardless of the danger.
Skylar is such an inspiration, especially for battered woman stuck in harmful relationships. She proves it is possible to escape such a life. I like how upfront Skylar is with Danny from the start. Danny’s presence makes her feel secure enough to acknowledge the hard truth about her situation. I adore the fact that Skylar is not the type of female who likes pink. She and I have that in common. What I love the most about Skylar is how she knows what a great person Danny is. She recognizes the fact that he is one of the good guys, the complete opposite of her slimeball ex-boyfriend.
A COWBOY LIKE YOU is book four in Donna Grant’s cowboy-themed, romantic suspense series, HEART OF TEXAS. The story can easily stand alone. The author does a splendid job of summarizing the events from the prior books without it being too obvious. However, to understand the dynamics between the hero and the North and Harper families, it is necessary to read the prior books.
A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a riveting tale of two people fate gifts of a second chance. I am still eagerly anticipating Jace or Cooper’s book. Also, I hope the author plans to pair the fierce attorney Leslie with either Cash or Ryan.
This novel was very entertaining. It contains the usual ingredients with a little bit of suspense, which is quite different for a romance novel.
Due to life events, 2 old acquaintances from a small town meet again. Her life is in danger and he is the sheriff of the town. We follow them while they develop their relationship and they fight for her life.
This is the 4th novel in this series. I decided to look up the other titles in the series. I have now read the first one which has similar ingredients and is as good as this one. Looking forward to reading the other two.
This was an easy and fast-paced read that included abuse and a second chance romance. I haven't read any of the previous books in the series but found it easy to pick up. Lots of characters from the previous books that I'm curious to know their stories.
I enjoyed the story but found it a little unbelievable. There was some suspense but it was wrapped up pretty quickly. The fact that Skylar jumped right into a relationship with Danny the day after escaping from an abusive relationship seemed pretty unrealistic. I wish it had been slowed down a bit to be more believable. Plus her decision to start over in her home town after years away happened really quickly. She has no problem leaving her job (whatever it was) and starting to plan for a new job in the midst of the drama with her ex while staying at someone else's home. Just a little too perfect and unbelievable.
Just WOW! This was sweet, sexy, and I was all in for every page. I loved all the different elements and that the story wasn’t predictable.... ok maybe a little buy it did leave you guessing the next direction and not always leading you there.
I found this to be an OK story. Skylar and Danny's relationship moves rather quickly considering they aren't able to get together very much, due to Danny's job. Skylar is running from an abusive ex boyfriend and that also makes the new relationship seem a bit unrealistic. The sexual tension was nonexistent and I felt the romance took a backseat. Those who enjoy a predominantly drama/suspense book will likely enjoy this one.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant.
I enjoyed A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant. I hadn't read the previous books in the series which proved not to be a problem. While the other characters and their stories are woven into this book, they were done well and didn't leave me wondering what I'd missed. I did think several times I would like to have learned their stories too.
Danny Oldman is intriguing. He's reserved but so good with his friends. He's had a thing for Skylar since they were in school. He's a good sheriff and the kind of man who is compelled to help those in need. He hasn't seen Skylar since school so he's quite surprised when she's the woman he's rescuing from an abusive situation.
While Skylar was acutely aware of Danny she never dated him. She always knew he was one of the very good guys. She'd watched many times as he'd championed those in need of help and admire him for it.
To watch these two fall for each other in the middle of the worst sort of nightmare is intriguing and the story was a well-paced trip through the ups and downs they must deal with.
I enjoyed this book and think you will too.
I really enjoyed A Cowboy Like You, and I wasn’t sure I was going to because Danny wasn’t that interesting to me in past books. I liked him, but I didn’t love him. Boy did he show me the error of my ways. Danny and Skyler were perfect for each other. Their story was a bit of an insta love with a twist, they went to high school together and both had a crush and didn’t know. It was a little outrageous to believe that those feeling not only stayed for 20 some years with no contact, but that they were that strong, it worked for the story though. You get to see plenty of past characters, and I’m very curious as to whose book is going to be next.
This story is one of the best in the series. Danny Oldman is a sheriff , a loner who still misses the one girl from HS that had his heart.
Skylar Long is that girl. She left town to experience the big city. Moved to Houston and made a name for herself. Sadly, she also had a relationship with a man that was an abuser. She leaves Matt and drives to her hometown, not realizing that her ex had followed her. Danny comes to her rescue . From that point on, the action is non-stop. Meanwhile, the relationship develops, but Skylar seems unable to get rid of Matt.
While the story was engaging and the characters well developed, it was the subject matter that really was the star.
Domestic abuse exists in all social classes. In this case, the wealthy family enabled the abuser, and tried to defame the abused. A situation that is very real.
Kudos to the author for the courage in delving with this subject matter.
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley and St. Martins . The opinions expressed are solely my own.
This was my first book by Donna Grant. It was an enjoyable read, somewhat predictable but an easy read. If you want to read something that makes you feel good at the end, this should fit the bill.
I have many conflicting opinions about this story. I did finish reading it and was never tempted to DNF it, but I found a lot of problems.
First of all, this reads like a report on domestic violence turned into a novel. There are quite a few "infodumps" giving all sorts of information about domestic violence. Second, the characters all seemed like stereotypes to me. The heroine was damaged but feisty. The hero was everyone's friend but lonely on the inside. He was also apparently Superman. See his action after escaping torture by the villain's henchman for proof of this.
The pair are surrounded by ultra competent people including four young men who were childhood best friends who joined the Special Forces of four different branches of the Armed Forces and served honorably before coming home to rural Texas which allowed the author to give a shout out to most branches of the military, excluding only the Coast Guard.
The villain and his enabling family were also stereotypes who successfully covered up multiple incidents of domestic violence before he was finally arrested by our hero in the process of trying to recapture the heroine. Then the family steps in and tries to use their wealth and political influence to cover over this latest criminal activity.
Fans who like a heavy dose of information in their romances will enjoy this one.
I liked this book. I have read one other book in this series and this book really was as good as the other book. I would read this whole series. This is a HEA with some suspenseful twists in it. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters and loved that everyone was pulled back into this book.
I love this author and I love small town romances, both of them together is a great thing for me!
While I enjoyed the story, it just didnt feel realistic enough for me. Sure the chemistry was there but for her to be running from someone else, scared for her life, she shouldn't be all willy nilly about jumping into something with Danny.
He's a great guy and all but still. His profession should have him acting more professional until everything is said and done.
Other than that little issue, this was a good story and well worth the read!
Skylar was fairly boring and I still don’t know what her job was. Danny was a protector by nature, but he was almost too selfless. I don’t mind fast paced or fast HEA, but this one went from domestic violence to sex in three days. I wasn’t invested in them. I won’t stop reading this author, but this one wasn’t my cuppa.
A Cowboy Like You is an action packed romantic suspense novel. On the run from an abusive boyfriend, Skylar stops at a rest stop and is attacked. Danny is eating his lunch when he sees a domestic violence scene unfolding before.him. Always one to run to the rescue, Danny jumps in before realizing it is his old high school crush. Their feelings develop quickly as they fight Skylar's powerful ex and his family in a tale that made me think Liam Neeson should be starring in the lead role. Their relationship moves very quickly and the violence escalates to epic proportions in the story that is somewhat over the top. I enjoyed the main characters but found the story somewhat predictable while being a little light on the love story. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Powerful story line. We are back in Texas with those sweet bad to the bone tough guys. Donna Grant took this book to new heights. I was on pens and needles most of the time. Skyler is running from trouble and ends up in her home town. Danny comes to the rescue and along with the other guys and couples help her to start her life over. Wonderful story.
