A good suspense and second chance romance story. Sheriff Danny witnesses a domestic dispute at a roadside rest stop, only to discover the woman being abused is his long time crush from high school. Skylar is trying to escape an abusive relationship, and is rescued by Danny. The book is build around continued escape attempts, as her abuser, Matt, and Matt’s very wealthy family come after Skylar with everything they have. Ms Grant wrote a very good story, building and pacing the suspense well, as well as developing the romance between Danny and Skylar nicely. It comes across as believable; a hard one to put down.
I'm a huge fan of Ms. Grant's paranormal romances and got swept into her contemporary Heart of Texas series and ended up falling in love with the Harpers and thoroughly enjoyed the romantic suspense of each of their stories. Now that the three siblings have found their HEA it's time for the lonely sheriff Danny Oldman to find his own romance.
On a lonely night sitting in his truck at a vista point enjoying his dinner gives Danny a ring side view to a fight between a couple where the man in question takes abusive actions. Danny breaks up the incident, takes pictures and arrests the man only to find that the woman in question is an old schoolmate that he once had a crush on. The last place Skylar expected to end up in when escaping her abusive boy friend was her old home town that she once couldn't wait to leave.
The arrest of Skylar's boyfriend triggers a chain of events that place Skylar at the center of a storm since it turns out that her boyfriend is a member of a prominent Texas family and his brother is making a play for political office. Skylar is tucked away at the East ranch courtesy of Danny's friendship with the owners while the story plays out.
If domestic abuse is a trigger for readers then I suggest this is a not a book for you even though the author has handled the topic tactfully the story does not focus on one man's ugly obsession.
I have enjoyed this series and have looked forward to each book but I will admit that this book is definitely not my favorite in the series.
Danny is one character who you never doubt cares - not only about his community, but those he calls family. As a sheriff, he has seen some pretty awful things, and domestic abuse is one of his worst. And when he, by chance, happens to stop one right in front of him, he realizes that protection needs to be more than just words. Skylar is on the run from her abusive ex. She escapes back to her hometown for the chance to be free from domination. Running into Danny is pure happenstance, but when the opportunity rises to pursue a new start will her past prevent her from finding happiness.
Note: this is book 4 in the series. While both containing suspense and some violence, the story does end in an HEA.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Cowboy Like You, by Donna Grant, is available at booksellers 11-26-19. As book 4 in the Heart of Texas series, Cowboy in some ways works as a standalone but I think reading the first 3 would give the reader more insight into the dynamics of the characters. The tidbits mentioned of other characters hinted at more backstory but didn't satisfy completely. I understand it's a fine line to walk, not getting too involved in secondary characters, but it didn't hit the mark.
Skylar Long is running from her abusive boyfriend. This time she almost got away. He tracks her like a big game hunter, he's awful. He fooled her for a long time before he let the crazy show. She also didn't bother to look past the surface, didn't ask questions I would have right away. For some reason she had started driving towards her old hometown & got lucky that the sheriff was around when Matt caught up to her. Turns out she went to school with the sheriff & he goes way above & beyond to help her. She got lucky, he's got an amazing group of friends to help keep Skylar safe while things work out. She becomes too trusting too fast for me to believe. After everything she's been through why isn't she more closed off & wary?
Sheriff Danny Oldman is a workaholic. Married to his job he hasn't had a date or relationship of any kind in years. It's a little hard to believe, not even the waitress at the diner? Anyone? He's given up. Skylar turns out to be his school crush, the one he never got over. It's too pat that they fall into a relationship right away, they knew immediately kind of thing.
I liked the characters, want to go back to book 1 and find out more about this tight group of friends. I want to know how it came to be. The story has plenty of drama, action, timely topic, lust, & romance. It just all happens too fast.

Wow, great story especially towards the end where I raced through it so fast.
This story is a scary reality for women who connect with obsessed men. Skylar fled back to her hometown and her high school crush. This could be a second chance for them if she survives.
Love the small town feel where everyone is family. The drama, action and romance made for a very entertaining story.
The book starts with Danny's lonely life as sheriff, spending his time outside of work alone and drinking. Then he happens upon Skylar and her ex-boyfriend having an altercation. The girl that got away has come back, and Danny gets to play kind of a knight in shining armor by saving and helping her. There was suspense in the book, but lots of domestic violence and other triggers. It just didn't feel believable to me that a woman in Skylar's position would immediately fall for someone else while her entire world was being upended. Many parts of this book, especially the last 20%, were tough to read due to the content.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, there should be a content warning about domestic abuse.
I didn't really like this novel. I thought it was a bit boring, the insta-love bothered me and I disliked the hero. He hero is also supposedly an alcoholic, but he is magically saved by love by the end of the novel, which is a dangerous narrative. And then there is the fact that the heroine just came out of an abusive relationship, but she is 100% ready to begin something with the hero, with no pause or second thought given to it.
It just did not seem very believable (even by romance novel standards), nor was it particularly enjoyable.
Danny and Skylar’s second chance love story in A Cowboy Like You, book four in the Heart of Texas series by Donna Grant, was an amazing, and enjoyable tale. Trigger Warning: at the heart of this story is a woman unexpectedly being in and attempting to leave an abusive relationship; it can be graphic.
Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman is still single and tells anyone who asks that it’s because he is married to his job; keeping keeping the people of his beloved Texas hometown safe. The truth is, Danny is still pining for his high school crush who left town after graduation. Skylar Long never expected to return to her hometown but finds herself heading there as she fled Houston and her possessive boyfriend; the man of her dreams turned out to be a nightmare of abuse. Seeing Danny again surprises Skylar, realizing that their long-ago attraction is still there and more powerful than ever. Danny’s number one priority is to keep Skylar safe and hidden from her wealthy, powerful ex before this sadistic man finds her and harms her again.
Ms. Grant wrote an intense, emotional and exciting romantic suspense that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sexual chemistry, suspense, a dysfunctional family, fear, and endearing characters giving Danny and Skylar a chance at love, happiness, and a future neither expected. I highly recommend A Cowboy Like You to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This story had me hooked from the very beginning. I was thinking it would be a light hearted story about the one who got away. But I was wrong. The action started from the very first chapter. And it is enough to get your adrenaline rolling. Danny was very protective and took care of Skylar. They were both so tender and loving to each other, feeling the connection they had when they were young, now ready to make the connection last. The other part of the story with the ex-boyfriend will make your blood boil and demand for justice to be done. Such a captivating story from start to end. Holy cow the action in the last few chapters! I loved it and the family camaraderie with Danny's group of friends. They are what we all would want in our lives.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.
Danny finally gets his HEA in this cowboy romance meets romantic suspense!
Sheriff Danny Oldman has been a steady presence in the Heart of Texas series, always there to help the East-Harper family and do what’s right, and now it’s his turn to find love and happiness...but not without some obstacles and more than a bit of danger in A Cowboy Like You.
Skylar is trying to escape an abusive relationship and ends up on the road to her home town and the boy that was always willing to help and fight for the underdog, the boy who’s now the sheriff. Little does she know that the sheriff as always felt she was the one who got away and he’s not about to let any history repeat itself, not on his watch.
Skylar’s journey may be hard for some readers (see content warning below) but I felt that it showed the complexity of abusive relationships and how just leaving isn’t always the end. Danny’s love and support while keeping a firm grip on reality was just what Skylar needed and was so true to his character that we knew what he was thinking and feeling before she did.
I loved getting the to catch up with the Easts and Harper brothers as well as Jace and Cooper. I’m also really intrigued by Leslie, Cash, and Chief Ryan Wells. (I kind of really want a M/M between Jace and Ryan after that last scene in A Cowboy Like You!) I can’t wait for more Heart of Texas stories.
Content Warning: on the page domestic violence and retellings of previous abuse.
I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.
3.5 stars
This was a new to me author and I enjoyed the book overall. I enjoyed both main characters and their backgrounds and traits. It was nice the heroine being confident regardless of the current situation she was living.
The book deals with dark topics like domestic abuse and violence. While not terribly explicit, it can be triggering for people that have gone through similar situations.
I really liked the book but I do feel that the romance plot took a secondary seat to the suspense/police plot and I would have liked to see that reversed, because while well throughout, sometimes the romantic development between the characters seems a bit rushed.
Danny is feeling dissatisfaction with his life. Oh sure, he likes his job as a sheriff, has great friends, and his town is wonderful, but he doesn't have anyone at home to share his heart with. Until he rescues someone from his past one night. Skylar was the girl he had always crushed on, but never made a move on back in high school. He always thought she was destined for bigger and better things than him, so when she moved out of their small town and into the city, he knew for sure he wasn't good enough. But now she's back, trying to escape her abusive ex. Can Danny get the woman of his dreams this time? And protect her from someone with more money than sense, and a family who always bails him out of trouble?
I really enjoyed A Cowboy Like You. It's sweet and heartfelt, and intense and action-packed, too. Sounds like a weird combination, but it really works here. Skylar and Danny are a wonderful couple with passionate chemistry and lots of love to spare. The secondary cast was as excellent as Danny and Skylar and the writing is top notch. 4 heartfelt stars!
Wildly entertaining! The life of a Sheriff is never boring especially when his old crush returns to town. She brings a heap of trouble but Danny and his friends rally around her for protection and friendship. Loved this book start to finish, so much history with Danny and the boys. Whole series is fabulous and each is a standalone but the characters will make an appearance in each book. I received an early copy, review voluntarily written.
Wonderful modern-day western style romance. Ms. Grant did a awesome job developing all the characters especially Danny and Skylar. This is the second book in this series of four I've had the pleasure of reading. The author gave a good background on how Danny and Skylar knew one another in the past. Skylar is running from her abusive, wealthy ex-boyfriend. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants even if that means killing people. Danny is a well loved and respected sheriff and Skylar has done well for herself during her time away. I received a complementary copy of this book via Net Galley and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by Ms. Grant.
A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a riveting, action-packed, sensual read that you will not want to end.
As with all of her books Ms. Grant will pull you into A COWBOY LIKE YOU with her world-building abilities, drawing vivid pictures of all the characters, the high octane action, and unexpected danger and drama. If you have not read the others in the series, this is #4, don't worry, it is a stand-alone but I would guess that once you have had your hands on A COWBOY LIKE YOU, you will want the others and happily devour those too.

Absolutely loved this cowboy/sheriff story. Old friends who come together and find happiness always makes for a wonderful story. Very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
I love second chance romance so A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant was the story for me. It is an amazing story of Lone Star sheriff, Danny Oldman reconnecting with high school friend, Skylar Long. They never took their chances on each other in the past but now is the time.
Well-written story of danger stalking a strong woman who like us all needs some help from a friend. My favorite kind of story where the good guy wins the battle and the girl too. All the gang is along for the story too so a wonderful Christmas story is even more captivating.
Danny has lived his entire life in his hometown and although he has created a loyal group of friends he hasn’t been so lucky when it comes to love. He puts all his focus on his career as a Sheriff but that doesn’t stop him from feeling isolated as everyone around him finds their soul mate. Facing another night alone he didn’t expect the surprise that trip to the diner would bring.
Skylar has managed to escape her abusive ex however he is hot on her trail has caught up to her when Danny comes to her rescue. Danny and Skylar have a past as they went to school together and secretly crushed on each other, but they had very different dreams for the future and haven’t seen each other since.
When the danger to Skylar is far from over Danny arranges for her to stay with his friends where she will be safe. As the danger around them escalates so does the chemistry between them but will this be their second chance or are they destined to separate once again?
Suspense, twists and heat combine with not only great characters in Skylar and Danny but great secondary characters as well into a story that will keep you entertained until the last page.
I love Donna Grant's sweet, sexy cowboys!
This book has it all.
Danny and Skylar are great together. Their chemistry is off the charts. I especially love that they are former classmates.
Having the 'gang' altogether again is something special!
The action scene at the end had me chewing on my fingernails.
Donna Grant is one of my favorite authors and this book showcases her talent in the best way.
If sweet, sexy cowboys who don't hesitate to put they're woman first is your jam, then don't wait, jump into this series.
Thank you Donna for the opportunity to read and review this book.
A well-written story that handles the tough situation of abusive relationships. Skylar Long regains her strength with the help of Sherriff Danny Oldman and his friends. The characters are wonderful. and the story moves along at a quick pace. I received a copy through Netgalley and I am voluntarily giving my review.
