A Cowboy Like You is the 4th book in Grant’s Heart of Texas series and complements the other books in the series well. It has the same small town welcoming feel as the previous books in the series and is full of heartwarming characters, friends/family, drama, suspense, a touch of danger, and a sweet second chance romance in the middle of it all. It is a well-written, engaging story from start to finish and once you begin reading it is hard not to get wrapped up in the emotions and drama in the storyline, it really draws you in.

Danny and Skyler are wonderfully written characters and I love that we get to catch up with the other characters in the series as well as enjoy their jovial banter and kinship; you can feel the love and concern these guys have for each other flowing through the pages. This book is a wonderful second chance love story with a sweet, well-deserved HEA. A great addition to the series.

This series by Donna Grant is so enjoyable! I've loved every book so far and A Cowboy Like You was no exception!

Danny Oldman is the local sheriff and he is married to his job. There is no question about that, but you also get the senes that he might have just been waiting for the right person to come into his life, or in this case, back into his life.

Skylar Long moved away from her hometown long ago, but little did she know that it would be the one place where she would end up fleeing when things went south in Houston. The man she was involved with, who she thought was the love of her life, turned out to be anything but.

Both Danny and Skylar have always had feelings for one another, but circumstances did not allow them to be together once Skylar left town. Now that she is back and they are reconnecting amidst the scary situation she finds herself in, they realize that the feelings they felt all those years ago haven't faded.

This was a great story and it had all of the elements that I love in a romance - friendship, intimacy, and even a little suspense. Great work by Donna Grant!

Danny and Skylar's story is fast paced and this story moves very quickly. Skylar is running from her ex who has been abusing her for months. She runs to her hometown and Danny, who is the sheriff, is there in time to prevent her ex from getting to her again. H and h knew each other from high school and Danny always had a secret crush on her. I love a small town romance and this one did not disappoint. There is a huge cast of side characters from the other books, but this can be read as a standalone. Although I will go back and read the other books because I'm intrigued about there stories. A touch of suspense in this book, even though we knew who the bad guy was. The romance bloomed a little fast for me as Skylar was abused. But still a beautiful love story. 3.5 stars

I'm the type of person that has to read all the books in a series in order or I'm not happy. However this book could be read as a stand alone, the connections between characters is lightly explained. I really enjoyed this book, read it in one day I just couldn't leave it alone. Danny is the type of man that just helps everyone. When he helps his high school crush Skylar the sparks fly. I hope the series continues, there are so many men that need a HEA!

Danny Oldman had a crush on Skylar Long way back in high school. Contemplating where he is in his life one evening he didn't expect her to show up in his life and with a huge problem. Yet there she is parked in the car next to him and a guy smashing her window trying to get her. While i enjoyed the book overall the pacing was weird for me. It seemed to click along pretty quickly at times it seem to drag and there was a lot of inner dialogue that characters had going that went no where. I started skimming those parts. Next think you know there's this big climatic ending. Skylar and Danny seemed to fall into a sexual relationship really quick for her literally just escaping a violent relationship. Not my favorite book in the series but still a enjoyable read.

When Skylar runs away from her abusive ex-boyfriend, he ends up catching her and promising she'll regret running. Luckily for her, her old friend (and now county sheriff) Danny, sees she's in trouble and comes to her rescue.
With Skylar's ex determined to get her back, by any means necessary,Danny has to call on friends to help him keep her safe. But will he be able to Skylar safe?

This was an excellent addition to the Heart of Texas series. The subject matter is tough, but the author handles it very well. I think this is one of my favorite books in the series.

Possible trigger warning: domestic abuse, stalking

“Having you back makes me crave you with a ferocity that should frighten you.”
“You can’t say things like that and not expect me to want to kiss you again.”

If you’re not already reading this series, you absolutely should be!

This series has become one I really look forward to, and the newest installment—A Cowboy Like You—definitely serves up a healthy helping of the things I love best about it.

The family and friendship aspect is strong in the Heart of Texas series, and through Danny’s relationship with the Harper & East families, we see that one brilliant display. It’s charming and rewarding and heartfelt—a feel good aspect to a book that has some darker themes. (Side note: this can be read standalone but it would certainly help to read the earlier books first—book one in particular.)

Danny & Skylar are about to get their second chance at “the one who got away”, and while I love that their connection is build from an existing foundation, it was also constructed quite quickly. Did it lessen my enjoyment of this book? No. But it’s worth noting. I’m personally into instalove but the abuse suspense plot did make me wonder a little about it. Having said that, I really enjoyed the sweet way they both respected and cared for one another, and the fact that they knew it hadn’t been their time before, Not to mention the steam factor, which left me a little hot under the collar.

I’ve found with all of the books in this series that the ending comes up quite rapidly, and yes, that was also the case here. However, whether it’s because I was prepared for it, or for some other reason, it wasn’t too big of an issue. In fact, I think this is my favorite conclusion of all four books so far. There are still some dangling questions I’m left with but on the whole, I was more than satisfied with the conclusion to A Cowboy Like You.

I’m happy to say that there are still two—maybe three now?—more men in this family-friendship that need stories, because I’m keen to come back for more well-written romance and edge-of-your-seat suspense from Donna Grant.

A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant
Heart of Texas #4

The sheriff is lonely when the book begins and he is thinking about the girl in high school that he had a crush on but never put the moves on. Christmas is coming and he is tired, hungry and alone. Almost as if his thoughts have conjured her he sees the woman he has been thinking about attacked in the parking area he just happens to be parked in. Danny Oldman is definitely surprised and happy to see Skylar Long again and Skylar is equally happy to see Danny.

This small town second chance romance is action-packed and filled with people from previous books. Danny is a good man who deserves a good woman just as much as Skylar deserves a kind man that will treat her well. The two may have found just that in one another but there is the pesky problem of the abusive ex-boyfriend, Matt, who is a narcissistic obsessed bad guy that likes to hurt women.

I enjoyed returning to the group of people in this series and enjoyed reading how Danny and Skylar achieve their HEA even though I was a bit surprised at how quickly they fell into the relationship. The story is fast paced and easy to follow and I was invested in the two finding their way out of the troubles they found themselves in. At times I felt it was a bit predictable but all in all I enjoyed the story. I also imagine that with Ryan, Jace and a few more that are still not married this series will have more books I can look forward to reading. I kind of wonder if Ryan will stay on as the Chief or take up the Texas Rangers on the job offer.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Paberbacks for the ARC – This is my honest review.

A Cowboy Like You is the fourth book in Donna Grant's Heart of Texas series, a series I've been following, and, although I found some things I liked about this novel, I will admit to having some problems with it as well, which is the reason for my giving a rating of just 3 stars.

First, the title--the hero, Danny, is the sheriff, not a cowboy, and while a good part of this novel is centered at the East Ranch, owned by the Harper family (we've met the Harper siblings in the first 3 novels in the series), it doesn't make the very likable hero a cowboy. Second, at the beginning of the novel, he seems to be pining for Abby, a former high school crush now married to one of his closest friends, Caleb Harper, until we learn later that it's not Abby he's pining for. Danny also seems to be developing a drinking problem because he's lonely, and all his friends seem to have found their ideal mates, and Danny has never found his--pretty hard to do when one hasn't dated in years. His drinking is something I don't think should be encouraged as a way of dealing his or anyone else's loneliness or problems.

As Danny returns home from work, he realizes the cupboard in his home is bare, he goes off to get a takeout dinner, and parks in a rest area to enjoy his meal and his favorite view, something he's often done, but when a car pulls into the rest stop and parks, lights off, his interest is picqued. Shortly thereafter, another car pulls in, the angry driver gets out, starts yelling at the woman inside the other car to get out and begins pounding on her car. He then breaks the driver's side window and attempts to drag the terrified woman out of the car by her long, blonde hair, while screaming threats at her for having the nerve to leave him. That's when Danny steps in, arrests the guy, Matt Gaudet, and Danny realizes the the woman Matt has been abusing is a former classmate of his, Skylar, the girl we soon learn is the one he crushed on in high school, and she plans to press charges. If domestic violence, or any other type of violence is a trigger for you, put down this book and find another, because this is certainly not the only violence contained within its pages, and at times it nearly seemed more like a treatise on domestic violence than a romance novel.

After locking up Matt, Danny takes Skyler to stay with his friends, at the very secure East Ranch. It seems that all the men on the ranch, including Caleb, were trained as Green Berets, SEALs and Special Forces operatives, and the ranch is as secure as any fortress. He knows his friends will keep Skylar safe from her abuser, who is the son of one of the most wealthy families in the state, the Gaudet family, a family well used to buying their trouble-prone eldest son out of every situation he gets into, simply to keep up appearances, and enabling Matt to continue his violent and controlling behavior, because he never has had to face any consequences for his violence towards women.

As Skylar is holed up at the East Ranch, she and Danny soon act on their mutual attraction, and it was too soon, in this reader's opinion. As a battered woman, one would think Skylar wouldn't trust her judgement about men, or seek out a new relationship when her last relationship was such a disaster. As a character, Skylar, although made to seem spunky, never bothered mentioning her abusive boyfriend to anyone, never documented her abuse with the police, hid it from her friends and family, and basically doing everything you're not supposed to do when you find yourself in an abusive relationship. At least she took photos of her bruised and battered body on her cell phone.

While Danny is smitten and extremely protective of Skylar, their insta-love simply didn't convince me of their compatibility, and her jumping into bed with Danny, while hiding from Matt, just didn't jibe with what I already knew about the psychological damage abused women suffer, and so their sudden romance and sudden lust, just didn't work for me.

While the novel is well-written, well-plotted, well-paced, and certainly both suspenseful and graphically violent when the action and danger ramp up, there seems to be little depth in any of the characters, especially Danny, who is always "nice" and protective, and Matt, who would have benefited by the author giving the reader some reason or rationale for his violent and abusive behavior, something we learn dates far back into his grade school years.

This being a novel of romantic suspense, while the suspense was good, the romance was certainly lacking, and although there is the expected HEA ending, it too lacked depth and was again, far to abrupt. If you're looking for a quick, suspenseful read, and are not triggered by violence and domestic abuse, then you'll probably like this novel more than I did. For me, the leading characters needed more depth and more time for their relationship to develop. I'd also suggest reading the books in this series in the order they were written, because trying to tell who was married to whom, whose children were whose, and where the extraneous other characters introduced at the East Ranch was difficult enough for someone who's read the first three novels in the series, and would probably be almost incomprehensible to a newcomer to this series.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.

A Cowboy Like You
Heart of Texas

Western Romance, Second Chance Romance

⭐⭐⭐⭐

The cover doesn’t tell us much except that we’re dealing with a good-looking, clean-cut, hardworking cowboy. But that’s probably enough to get most of us who like this genre to buy the book!

Danny’s just eating his take-out at the rest stop on his night off as the local sheriff when a fancy car pulls in and parks. Then a second expensive car pulls in next to the first one.

Skylar drove past the bar and checked to be sure that Matt was there with his friends before hightailing it out of Houston. She wasn’t going to stick around to be Matt’s punching bag. When she saw headlights in her rearview mirror, she pulled into the rest stop and parked. Sure enough, Matt pulled into the space next to her and stepped out of the car. He slammed his hands on the hood of her car. The dent could be hammered out, she knew. Broken bones were much harder to heal.

It wasn’t until Matt had been taken away in a cruiser by the deputy that Danny and Skylar got to see each other closely enough to recognize each other. There was the girl he never felt he was good enough to try for; and “she knew that if anyone could protect her, it was Danny Oldman.”

This is a second chance western love story that takes a young sheriff who’s headed towards being a lonely drunk in spite of his good friends’ best efforts and a former local girl who escaped to the big city and liked it until she ran into domestic violence and brings them back together to heal each other. We seem to see domestic violence a lot more in romances these days as it becomes something authors feel they want to address or expose in any way they can. Ms. Grant deals quite well with it in her story. She also has created very good characters for us in this book. You feel for Danny in the first chapter when he is thinking about his loneliness and his job, about eating or not and about drinking. You can understand how he has come to this point where it’s almost more of an effort than it’s worth to get dressed and get something to eat because there is nothing to eat in the house. The author makes you feel his despondency. You also feel the hope spark when Danny and Skylar recognize each other at the rest stop. Ms. Grant does a wonderful job drawing us into the feelings of her characters and making us part of the story. There’s plenty of action later on as well. And as it’s a second chance story, love wins out in the end. So we do have a HEA with this one. Recommended.

I have really liked this series so far. This one tells the story of Danny, the sheriff in town, who is liked by all due to his easy going friendly nature. However sometimes he just wants to be alone, not talking with everyone from town. So when he decided to eat at the truck stop to enjoy dinner and a view, he is surprised when a car pulls in immediately following another that ends in an arrest.

He was even more surprise when it is a woman from his past that he always had a crush on. He never thought Skylar would ever come back to town, she was a free spirit who was always destined to leave their small town. Skylar always trusted Danny, and when she sees him she finally breaks down. Telling him about her abusive ex, and all that has happened.

Danny fights to keep her safe, even when her ex has a lot of money and isn't afraid to play dirty. He can't believe she is back and wants to make sure she knows exactly how he feels and if they can finally have their chance.

While this talked about a really heavy subject matter, it also showed the lightness in the world when good people help each other out. Loved the small town charm and the fight in them both for justice.

Thanks goes to the publisher, via Net-Galley, for the opportunity to read and review A Cowboy like You by Donna Grant, in advance of publication. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.

It’s been quite a few years since I’ve read a book by Donna Grant, and the first western romance. Her writing is smooth and flows well. The pacing is steady and kept me engaged from the beginning to end. Not only are the main characters intriguing with multiple facets, the plot is unique and involves a very real issue. A controlling man who sees nothing wrong with knocking a woman around, is a true villain, and this one is a doozy!

Skylar Long is a fascinating character. She’s an independent woman, yet she manages to end up with an abusive ex-fiancee, bend on keeping, even when she has escaped his clutches. One doesn’t expect a woman who likes her freedom becoming involved with a man like her ex, but it just shows the power of a mulipative man. I liked her character a lot and wanted her to break free and find a happy ending.

Danny Oldham is a great hero with warrior protective tendencies, especially for Skylar. He knew her in high school and crushed hard on her, but they didn’t move in the same group. When he ends up helping her get away from her abusive ex-fiancee. He sees this as a chance for them to explore the attraction that burns hot between them. I always enjoy a warrior and protector, a strong man willing to go to the ends of the earth to protect the woman he falling in love with.

The romance between Skylar and Danny is combustible. The chemistry between them is fantastic and is there from the start. I particularly enjoyed the sexual tension Ms. Grant builds between them, instead of having them fall into bed. I could see them as a forever couple and wanted them to have their happily ever after.

If you enjoy a romance with a real hero and a damsel in distress, then you will love A Clowboy like You as much as I did. I look forward to reading other books by this talented author. Happy reading!

A very exciting and suspenseful story!
Danny and Skylar practically leap off the pages. Skylar as the damsel in distress (though very fierce in her own right) and Danny as the protective alpha male with the tender and caring side.
I was thirsty for justice thru the whole story. Every twist and turn made me want it more! Though a little wordy at times, given all the excitement, I’d still give it 5 stars!

Danny Oldman, the handsome Lone Star sheriff, is still single. He tells himself, and anyone who asks, that he is married to his job—and what matters most is keeping the people of his beloved Texas hometown safe. However Danny still hasn’t gotten over his high school crush Skylar Long. She moved away after graduation and took Danny’s heart with her.
Skylar Long never thought she would have to flee Houston and return home—where it all began for her. But that’s what happened after the man of her dreams turned out to be an actual nightmare. Now, Skylar is desperate to escape her obsessive boyfriend. Nothing shocks her more than seeing Danny again and realizing that their long-ago attraction is more powerful than ever.
This is the fourth book in the series& is my favourite. A lovely second chance romance that also had an abusive, stalker of an ex. I’m so pleased that Danny has had his story he deserved it & his story didn’t disappoint. I loved both Danny & Skylar, he’s just lovely & she’s stronger than she thinks, they were so right for each other. A well written book that flowed really well.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A Cowboy Like You is the fourth book in Donna Grant's contemporary romance series Heart of Texas. If you haven't read the previous books, just jump right on in; you won't be lost at all. I read the previous book and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to get an ARC of the latest installment. The last book was very good...but this one was great! I will add a trigger warning to my review: This book deals with domestic violence.

Danny Oldman is the Sheriff of Lone Star, Texas. He doesn't have much of a dating life; everyone thinks he is married to his job. To Danny, it's more complicated than that: his heart still belongs to Skylar Long, his crush in high school. While eating dinner at a rest stop in his truck, a car pulls into the parking lot, shortly followed by another vehicle. Danny sees violence break out and jumps in to stop it. The woman in the car is Skylar, of all people, being abused by her boyfriend Matt, from whom she was on the run. The man is arrested, and Danny brings Skylar to the home of his friends who can keep her safe. Apparently all the old feelings are still there between Danny and Skylar. However, Matt is NOT going to let Skylar leave him; will Danny be able to keep her safe?

I loved the romance between Danny and Skylar. What I really enjoyed was the lack of "will they or won't they". They admitted their feelings and didn't play games. It was great seeing Danny's friends from previous books, and how protective they all became of Skylar. I believe the issue of domestic violence was dealt with in an honest manner. Skylar was embarrassed that she didn't tell anyone about the first time Matt abused her, but when it happened again she knew she had to escape. Things became very intense when Matt escalated his attempts to coerce Skylar to come back to him. There was exciting action near the end; thank goodness I had the weekend to read this, because I did NOT want to put this story down!

I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.

This was an enjoyable second chance romance in a small town setting. There was suspense and action as well. The main characters were very likeable and relatable.

A cowboy like you by Donna grant is the 4 the book in her Heart of Texas series but can be thoroughly enjoyed as a stand alone. I completely devoured this wonderful cowboy romance !

Sheriff Danny Oldman lives a lonely life even though he's surrounded by friends who care . Fate lands his old high school crush into his life just when he was reminiscing over her. Skylar is trying to run from her abusive boyfriend and Danny happens to be in the right place at the right time when she needs help the most. Now she has to find away to escape her ex's clutches for once and for all, which isn't going to be easy given his family's wealthy status. Both Danny and Skylar had been harboring secret crushes back in high school and even though the timing isn't the greatest Skylar isn't going to let go of the chance to be with Danny. He makes her feel safe and at peace like she's never had before, hopefully her ex doesn't destroy their chance of having a future.

I was immediately smitten with Danny. He is so kind, caring and in the beginning his sadness just bleeds from the pages and you want to give him a big hug. Skylar is brave and resilient and I'm not sure I would have made it through her ordeal as mentally stable. Together they are simply sweet and just fit. However, even though they know each other from high school, they haven't seen each other in over 10 years at least which made their romance pace a bit insta lovey.

Overall, I highly enjoyed this cowboy romance. A story filled with love, friends, a little high stakes action, and a touch of the holiday season to round it out. I look forward to reading for Donna Grant books in the future.

4.5 Stars This book features Danny and Skylar. These two have feelings that go way back to high school but were never acted on. Imagine his surprise when he stops a domestic violence scene and Skylar is the woman. The story is about Danny, a sheriff, protecting Skyler from a wealthy man who thinks if he can’t have her, then no one can. It’s about these two getting a second chance at long buried feelings. The story line is fantastic with great flow. This is a small town romance with awesome characters. These characters are people I’d love to be friends with.

Being abused by the person who say they love you is never right. This story may trigger unpleasant memories for som readers but mostly it should give you hope. The author has done a wonderful job of dealing with a gut wrenching subject. Skylar and Danny grew up together. He has always had a crush on her but never acted on it. When fate brings her back into his path, under extremely bad circumstances, they discover in each other what they had missing all their lives. With support from friends and the community they overcome the obstacles and get the greatest of gifts at Christmas, love that is pure and true.
