I read about half of this book. I really wanted to like it. But I wasn't into the storyline. I think there is definitely an audience for this book that would enjoy it.
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
This was such an emotional read!
Macey and Ben really wanted a child.
They adopted Harper.
This is their journey in how they become a family, a real family.
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
A book that I was immersed in very quickly, one that I had to page turn to the end, and then wanted more.
Loved this couple, they show the love they feel for each other in all their actions, and everyone would want a relationship like theirs.
The one heart desire for both of them is a child, and so far, it has been denied, but God works in mysterious ways, and we get to see how, and it will bring tears to your eyes!
What she wants is what she gets? Well, you need to read this one to see how a three-legged dog, a cat and a broken little girl fit into this picture, and add in a huge older home in need of repair.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher HarperCollins, and was not required to give a positive review.
I loved this book! It touched on some very serious topics and at times brought me to tears, but it was so worth it.
One common theme I picked up on while reading this and found very relatable was that of struggles. Struggles with fertility, struggles with finding a loving home and a family, struggles with health, struggles with being a single mother and trying to provide for your family. We all have our own personal struggles, but when we’re surrounded by people who care about us and are willing to support us when we need it most, it gives us the strength to fight through those hard times.
Macey, Harper, and Cora were such strong characters and became even stronger by having one another in their lives. I often have a favorite character in books, but in this case I loved them all equally. And Keeper was an added bonus too, seeing as I’m a dog lover.
Highly recommend this book, and I already can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

A feel-good story.
Macy has undergone several miscarriages and has just about given up on having a family. She and husband Ben restored a big house in anticipation of filling it up with children, and now they are all by themselves in this house. Macey meets a three-legged golden Labrador at a pet adoption event, and something clicks, that she truly needs to provide this dog, Keeper, with a "fur-ever" home.
Cora, a social worker, is trying hard to find a forever home for rough-talking, rude Harper, but Harper creates chaos wherever she goes. Diagnosed with a major heart defect, she needs a heart transplant, but she is a foster child. Through a series of events, Macey and Ben take Harper to be their foster child. Harper and Keeper bond with each other - some lovely moments there.
Rossiter handles a tough topic without sugarcoating the issues. Cora, a single mother raising three children on her own, makes too little money to adopt Harper. Some of the foster families are only in it for the money they receive from the state. Few families seem to truly care about the children in their care.
A heartwarming story about a little girl in need of a loving home and a grieving couple desperate for a child. This book covers serious issues such as child abuse, the failures of the foster care system, infertility, illness, and death, but it does so with a light touch. Those looking for a deep dive into these issues will find that Rossiter's exploration only skims the surface. The simple language, while lacking in sophistication, evokes heartfelt emotions as the story progresses and Harper finds the loving home she deserves. Some of the dialogue between the adults feels stilted and awkward at times, but the story shines most brightly in the scenes that involve Harper. Rossiter manages to create a realistic portrayal of a feisty 9-year-old who is taught from a young age that the world is a cruel place. While her experiences as an unwanted child in and out of foster homes has hardened her, she still manages to retain all the hope and innocence of a child who yearns for a permanent home and loving caretakers. Harper's connections with animals, particularly the three-legged golden retriever named Keeper, is sweet and enchanting. I loved the cover, which highlights the close bond between them.
Thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins Publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I like it when books make me feel all kinds of emotions. I enjoy books that make me cry. The author really used all the things to get me feeling emotions while I read: girl in the foster care system, heart condition, dog who needs a home... All the things!
Macy and Ben have an idyllic life with fulfilling careers and a wonderful old home they love, but something is missing- Macy finds herself unable to carry children successfully. They make the best of it, even adopting a wonderful dog who has had some misfortune in his life, but that empty spot persists and the idea of adoption does not seem like something they might consider.
That is until they meet a fiery young orphan who has been unsuccessfully navigating the foster system, almost finding a home but being ripped from that by tragedy. Macy meets her while working as a physician's assistant when Harper is diagnosed with a heart issue that will require eventual intervention. This little girl stays in her thoughts, but another crisis in Harper's life leads her to wonder if that little girl is not finding a place in her heart as well,
This is a beautiful story of love, faith, and the notion that a perfectly imagined future does not always go the way you expect, but perhaps that way it was meant to be nonetheless.
This book was received as an ARC from HarperCollins Publishers - Harper Paperbacks in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
Promises of the Heart reflects the importance of family and love. Those factors were key in shaping the lives of Macey, Ben, Keeper and Harper. Ben and Macey want a child, Keeper wants an owner, and Harper wants a family but all should be easy but all is complicated. Ben and Macey don't want to adopt and Harper has a heart condition that results in high anger. At first while reading all of this, my heart strings got pulled so hard that I almost stopped but this story was too good that I had to continue on. The struggle is real with Harper and this is a book that teaches you an important life lesson about the power of love and the strength it will always have no matter the situation.
We will consider adding this title to our Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
