One of my favorite things about Life Is a 4-Letter Word by David Levy is that you can pick it up and put it down with such short autobiographical essays. When I only had a few minutes, I would read an essay, and then I would think about how it related to my life. I did like to read the moral that he took away from his experience each time as well.
That being said, I thought it would be more funny. I have read other books of his in the past, so maybe my expectations were a little high on the laughter spectrum.
If you are looking for advice on life little's problems, then this would be a great book for you. The advice doesn't seem arrogant; it is up to the reader to apply the lessons to their own life.
I gave this book three out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Mango, and David Levy for my free copy of this book. This is my honest review.
This is a fun book and a quick read. It is full of quick little bits of advice to help you get through the tough times and to help you to remember not to take life, or yourself too seriously. You’ll get to read fun stories about the author's post college trip to a free clinic and how his imagination took off as he read a pamphlet on venereal diseases. Or, you can read about his experience going back to viewing the wonders of Cinderella in a theater as an adult. All told from his witty and creative perspective. There are over 200 pages of laughter and life lessons that will keep you turning the page for more.
I really enjoyed this one. It was exactly what I needed after reading some heavily plotted books. Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for my ARC.
This book was an enjoyable treat.. It was engaging and not at all preachy. I recently found myself revisiting some of the stories. Definitely recommend it
LIFE IS A FOUR-LETTER WORD - David A. Levy
WORDS OF WISDOM - 4 stars
Plot - 4 stars - This is a series of brief, thoughtful essays about life and living it in the best way possible. Dr. Levy has gathered sayings and rules of living over the years and has compiled them into a collection, along with his conclusions.
Writing - 4 stars - Very easy to read, easy to understand. Although I may not have agreed with all of his conclusions, it was clear that they were all thoughtful and intelligent comments.
Characters - 4 stars - This category doesn't really apply to this book, even though the author is clearly the basis for most of these stories, gathered over his lifetime. He has obviously had a varied life, and it was interesting to see where his actions have led him.
Title - 3.5 stars - Cute title, not really clever or original. But it caught my attention.
Cover - 3.5 stars - The cover and font are good colors to catch the eye, but otherwise it's pretty dull. I would have thought a book like this would have a more hopeful and enthusiastic color rather than a soothing blue.
Overall - 4 stars - I enjoyed this quick and easy self-help book. Some of the stories were inspirational and some were self-deprecating. There was a wide variety of subjects, and all were easy to read and understand.
I did not laugh at any of the stories in this book, but I certainly chuckled at quite a few of them. I even teared up at one of his stories, ie, when he had to put his dog down.
Well written. The pithy sayings at the end of each story sound like accurate reflections of how life sometimes can be.. I nodded my head at the wise ones.
Maybe people who like short biographical stories with sound advice will enjoy this book.
This is my opinion based on the review copy I received from the publisher.
I thought this was a cute book filled with funny, insightful anecdotes about life. The lessons were both amusing and relatable.
I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
David Levy has paired 40 stories from his life with applicable life lessons for each of us to remember. These life lessons are nothing earth shattering; rather, they are common sense things that we all need a reminder of from time to time. The stories were entertaining, concise, and relevant to the life lesson without hammering you over the head with it. I enjoyed the book and was sad when it ended because I wanted more! This book would make a great gift or coffee table book.
This is a great book - I couldn't put it down. Levy divides the book into different short stories, each of which provides some wisdom or life lesson. It is a fun read, but also very educational. Everyone can learn from this book. I loved it and highly recommend it.
I’m not quite sure how to rate this book as it’s not at all what I thought it would be. This book is what I would consider a “bathroom book.” In that you put it in there for either guests or yourself to read through should you need to be in there for a while. I think what’s most throwing me off about this book is the medium. I could totally see these vignettes appearing in a weekly newspaper column. Reading them in a book all at once felt odd.
Additionally, while none of the life lessons at the end of each chapter were revelational, the stories he attached to them were sometimes bland, sometimes were a stretch, and were sadly rarely funny.
I enjoyed the individual stories and the points at the end of each one. Lessons like "Simple is better-but not always easier", "Living in the moment makes life manageable", and "Empty threats are worse than no threats at all" are illustrated by each one of the stories that David shares. Overall, it's a quick and easy read. You could easily break it down and read one story a day or multiple at a time. They are all about one or two pages.
I loved this book since it not only provided me food for thought, but it was done in a very subtle way via humor and some heart touching stories. Highly recommend this to people of all ages.
David A. Levy, Author of "Life is a 4 Letter Word Laughing and Learning Through 40 Life Lessons" has written a thought-provoking, witty, and intriguing self-help and a nonfiction book. I love that the author doesn't "preach" to the readers, but through short anecdotal "essays", he shares the outcomes that he has experienced which can be helpful to others. I found some of the essays delightful with humor. The author has an easy-going style of writing which is very relate-able.
Life can be tough sometimes depending on what you are going through. Usually, it's down the road when you can reflectively understand the why of the situation and hopefully gain some perspective that will put you at ease. I came across a book that piqued my interest regarding those sentiments. Life Is a 4-Letter Word, even though the experiences may be exclusive to the author, the life lessons and reflective thoughts may be similar to many of you out there. It was a quick but fulfilling read. The 40 life lessons broken down in the book were reflective of his personal experiences and life lessons learned.
There were moments that pull at you, many that were funny and others that made you sit back and think. I've found the best wisdom shared from those who've lived life and that is evident in his stories shared. It's not a self help book telling you how to live life rather than one that is sharing some nuggets of wisdom that he learned that you might find applicable to your life. This book has mass appeal and I feel all would enjoy. I'd recommend checking it out.
I wasn't sure what this book was about, but the title was intriguing.
I wound up liking it but not loving it.
It was a great group of life advice held together by the author's own life stories.
In my opinion, this book would be a great read for 20 and 30 year olds, giving them advice but also giving them something to think about.
I tried numerous of times to get into this book and I really couldn't. The "lessons" in the book...you've seen it multiple of times, and although the book isn't meant to be preachy...the "life lessons" at the end of the essays felt that way. It's cool that Dr. Levy learned from all his experiences but, I didn't feel i learned anything. I was waiting for that moment that would make me go: "yes!" but sadly that moment never happened.
The whole thing "fake it till you make it" advice didn't ever sit well with me. I think that's horrible advice. I usually am never harsh with book reviews, but this book just rubbed me the wrong way and I basically have a meh attitude towards it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Mango for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As you age, you get your nerves settled and you start to accept things that you cannot change and start adjusting to life in a proper way.
This book is about such nuggets learnt through real life experiences and presented in form of small crisp chapters. At end of each their is lesson which is learnt through that event.
It is simple and it doesn't claim to be any magical book to make you successfull.
It is easy to read, easy in language and definitely enjoyable.
It is like your elder brother sitting with you on a dinner and sharing his thoughts.
Just read it in place of any artificial Self help book.
Thanks netgalley and publisher for review copy.
Not at all what I expected. I expected funny anecdotal stories. I found stories that felt like they were straight off of the therapists couch. Cover a bit deceiving..
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.
I don't usually have a lot of luck with nonfiction, especially the "self-help" type book, and this was no exception. It was difficult to engage with and did little to empower/encourage/inspire.
In paper form this would be a good book to leave in the bathroom for short intermittent reads. Filled with his life story and little 'Life lessons', =words of wisdom in his viewpoint.. Fun little book, quick easy read. Not particularly full of wisdom or humor that will move mountains.
I received this book as a complimentary copy for an unbiased review. The opinions expressed are my own.
