'Seafoam: A Friend for Madison' from Action Lab Entertainment is a series of short stories about a 9 year old girl and her strange friends on the beach.
In a series of 4 issues and individual stories, we meet Madison and her new friend Blue, and boy who is blue. Together with ta friendly crab, they battle and befriend a host of strange beings like a Hypnoctopus and dark Djinns. Blue also has a secret of his own.
The art and story here are really subpar. I like the concept, but there are things that just don't make sense. I can't imagine a young reader having an easy time of reading this one.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Action Lab Entertainment, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
Visually and thematically this one reminds me of cartoons like Star Vs the Forces of Evil. Highly stylized and sort of feminine in an off-beat way. It reads like a series of cartoon episodes. Liked but not really an ongoing plot. Cute but lacking in depth.
While I think Seafoam: A Friend for Madison has true potential as a series, the current iteration is in serious need of a good editing. There is no background for the characters and while that can work, it does not work at all here. I don't love the art, but it is serviceable and appropriate for the age for which the book is intended. If the series were to be redone, I would purchase it, but as it stands now, I will not be purchasing this for my library's collection and can not recommend it to others.
This is one of those series that are not bad but not so good either. The blue kid can't go in water otherwise he turns into a monster? Then why did he dive into the ocean in the first chapter to help Madison? I also wish I saw a prologue before diving into the mis-adventures of this. Not to mention the artwork always changes from outline to no outlines. There is practically no consistency with all of this.
That said, I would say kids would like this regardless. It's about the need for friends even when the perception is kind of bad. Blue definitely has some decent character development after coming out of his shell. By the end, he at least becomes a little better at opening himself up. I can see why that narwal brings Madison to the island. I just would like to see how they met.
I wanted to love this, but I didn't love it. It was good though. The art was nice, a little flat but not horrible. The stories were short and silly which I liked. Overall it would be something I would continue reading if I had the time. Sub par

The art in this book is adorable and kids will surely enjoy the bright colors and appealing images. However, the lack of character exposition made the stories fall slightly flat.
