The Honourable Assassins provide an opportunity to wartime book lovers to enjoy a reading focused on the Nazi regime time period. The book provides an in-depth background regarding the circumstances of the social-political landscapes and the different experiences people had during the time.
The book provides a well-described insight into the life of Kurt Von Lister and his experiences as a soldier. Kurt's adventures during the war impacted on his views regarding the regime and when he received a proposal to assist the opposition, he needed to make difficult choices.
I loved reading the book because of its significant insight into the historical landscape and the use of characters to provide a detailed insight into the events of World War II. I recommend this book to any person who finds the historical war events interesting and if you want to learn more about the different circumstances people experienced.
The book presents a well-edited format and easy reading that provides the reader with the ability to enjoy the book from the start to the end.
For me, this was an okay read, but not much more. There's not that much suspense and it's clear that the author hasn't done that much in-depth research to make this book realistic even if it's inspired by/based on real events. Fine, I might be a bit picky, but what does one expect when I have a minor in history?
The Honourable Assassins is an easy read, but not particularly thought-provoking for those readers who are aware of the failed plot to assassinate Hitler. The main character is portrayed as a stereotypical, aristocratic, junior officer of the Wehrmacht.
The enjoyment of the book was spoilt somewhat by the author’s lack of research. German officers were not issued with revolvers but with automatic pistols eg Mauser or Luger. Revolvers were only used by the allies. There are a few other military inconsistencies in the novel.
Fortunately, the ending is not as predictable as the rest of the novel.
The attempted assassination of Adolph Hitler, late in World War Two, very nearly succeeded. Organized by senior offivers, the plot enjoyed wide accceptance, but ultimately failed. This novel deals with the ambitious plan through the eyes of one junior officer, whose own family opposed the Nazis. Set during a tense and deteriorating time when all but the most fanatic knew the Nazi cause was lost, the hero Captain von Lister is recruited by a cousin, and subsequently becomes involed. His decision leads to a myriad of unforseen changes in his life.
While the story is a fascinating one, and well researched, the writing would have benefited from professional editing.
The Honourable Assassins is a very enjoyable spy thriller set in Germany and Sweden during the Second World War.
The story is about one man who is involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler but has he been discovered?
The writing is nice & easy and the book is recommended
This is an historical thriller set in World War 2 and concerns the “Valkyrie” plot to assassinate Hitler.
It is told from the point of view of Kurt Von Lister, an aristocrat, the son of a count, who is in the German Army but is definitely not a Nazi.
When a distant relative who is also in the army asks Lister to take part in a plot to assassinate Hitler, take over the Government and petition the allies to stop the war in order to prevent further bloodshed, Lister readily agrees.
However, as we all know from history, the planned coup does not run smoothly and fortunately , although implicated, there is no proof that Lister is one of the plotters.
This is an interesting take on the German resistance movement. Lister is not a character I have heard of before and I would assume he has been made up and based on others who took part in the original plot; he is well described and sympathetic.
The book is quite quick to read and certain parts of it are quite compelling, particularly Lister’s trip to Sweden.
I did look up the Valkyrie plot after finishing this book and it was quite interesting to read that the leader, Von Stauffenberg, was not necessarily against Nazi ideology from the beginning and perpetrated the assassination plan for military reasons fearing that Germany was going to lose the War.
Lister definitely gives the impression that he is against the concentration camps but I am not sure how realistic this view this would have been amongst high ranking German aristocrats.
Overall this was an enjoyable read which certainly entertained.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc in exchange for an honest review.
If you’ve ever Valkyrie, the Tom Cruise movie about the July 20, 1944, attempted assassination on Hitler, you likely know more about the event than the author. The Honourable Assassins is the glorified story of Captain Von Lister, who is painted as a heroic nobleman of integrity. Unfortunately, this book is devoid of much suspense, mystery, character development or research. It’s basically a “story” about the “hero” with no real depth. If you’ve ever read a mystery before, you can figure out Captain Von Lister’s fate after the first chapter. Meh!
