What He Did is an edge of your seat romantic suspense. This book has a plot that pulled me immediately into the action. I couldn’t put this book down. Fans of suspense will not want to miss this book. I received an arc from the publisher and this is my unbiased review.
Thank you to Bookoture for letting me take part in this tour and for my copy of this book via Netgalley. I enjoyed the first book in this series and I was intrigued by Rachel so I was excited to get stuck into this one.
I have to say while I enjoyed the first book I LOVED this one. You could read them as standalones but you would miss some of the back story for Rachel. Most of this is covered in this book but you might not get as much of a feel for who Rachel is. The more I learn about Rachel the more I like her. She is a strong woman but she's also holding a lot of guilt. She's an excellent detective and has very good instincts.
Rachel stumbles on this case has it involves her friend's husband. What seems like a traffic accident soon becomes a lot more. This case has a lot of parts and at the beginning, it was hard to see how they would all come together. There seemed to be a lot of moving parts and it took a few chapters for things to all come together.
I was hooked pretty early on. I really enjoyed the writing style and I kept turning page after page because while I had a feeling what was going to happen I just needed to know I was right. The story is quite heartbreaking and some of the characters are downright vile. I also felt sorry for those that got caught up in all. This really showed how peer pressure can have some devastating consequences.
As well as the case Rachel had her personal life to contend with. Rachel has been dating Tim for a few months now. The more I see of Tim the more suspicious I am. There's something about him that does not sit right with me. The ending of this book is perfectly set up for what I hope will be the next story and I am now eagerly awaiting this!
This book felt like a slow burn book where I found the first part of the book to be slow and didn't really grip me.
I am so happy I carried on as the end parts of the book really made up for it. I see so much that really made me want the book to carry on just that littl bit longer.
The characters were okay and rachel near the end was the one whom I liked and found was best designed.
Definitely an author I would read again.
This novel kept me on the edge till the end and it's a gripping and entertaining read.
I liked the solid plot, well written and engrossing, and the fleshed out cast of characters.
I look forward to reading other instalments in this series.

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
What He Did is the second book in the Rachel Hart series by J G Roberts and it is an enjoyable police murder novel.
The main crime(s) drive the story along at a decent speed however the book is let down by the poor secondary ending or twist which is so unbelievable
That aside the book is good and I will look out for book three in due course

What He Did by J.G. Roberts is the second thrilling installment of the Detective Rachel Hart series and, like the first, this one has left me wanting to delve even deeper into the personal story of this strong female protagonist.
Once again, murder and mayhem are on the agenda for DCI Hart and her team. The case becomes personal for Rachel when her friend Maddy's husband is in a serious crash that leaves him clinging to life. When foul play is established, Detective Hart's team searches for a link between a spate of murders, all involving victims of a similar demographic. As the murders continue to consume the police, Rachel struggles to achieve a work/life balance, and wonders if her lifestyle is in any way conducive to maintaining the demands of a serious relationship.
While the police procedural is nothing short of gripping, it is Rachel herself who keeps me wanting more of this compelling series. Luckily, a third installment is teased, and I am very much looking forward to spending more time peeling back the many layers of DCI Hart and her twin sister Ruth.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
Detective Rachel Hart #2
Maddy is a newsreader. She on-air covering the news when pictures of a road traffic accident come in. Maddy recognises the car, her husband, Simon was driving it. Simon is put in a induced coma to try and aid his recovery. DCI Rachel Hart is in charge of investigating the crash. Was it driver error or something more sinister that caused the accident? Rachel also has a new man on the scene. But will she let him get close this time?
Although it's a little predictable at times, this is still a very good read. It's also shaping up to be a terrific series. There are skeletons in every cupboard and it seems Simon has a few. As he is in a coma, he cant answer the questions but Rachel and Maddy have for him. During the investigation they find a threatening letter that had other peoples names on it that Simon used to have links to. Theres a story within a story that brings the past and present together. We also meet Tim, a lawyer and Rachel's new man friend. Hes trying to break down Rachel's barriers, but will he succeed? Rachels twin sister, Ruth is also in this book, we met her in the first book. Ruth has some mental health issues that stem from her childhood. She lives in residential care. Some parts of this story are a bit obvious but that did not stop me from enjoying this book. There also a cliffhanger ending. I cant wait to read the next book in this police procedural series.
This is the second book in the DCI Rachel Hart series. Compelling reading. It has lots of substance with many well-defined characters. Rachel is a complex character with her background, present circumstances and the ever-patient Tim. I don't think I'd like her as my Boss. She's a good Boss, but humourless and intimidating. There are shoals of red herrings, push-backs and dead-ends as Rachel and her team attempt to figure out the motives and perps for the dead bodies turning up. I became a little confused between Bella and Beca as their names are so similar - typical of me. It reminded me of the appalling Skripal Novichok poisoning in Salisbury. I look forward to the third book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
Excellent follow up to the first book in the series. A great main plot where again the author leads you down many a blind alley before a fabulous twist
The sub plot continues nicely too
Looking forward to number three in this great series
J. G. Roberts, who also writes as Julia Roberts, hit this one out of the ballpark. When I first started reading, I’ll admit I was confused and I was having trouble figuring out how the different storylines and characters related to one another. However, many of my favorite books start out with me being hopelessly confused!
Halfway through the book, things came together. When I came to the 80% mark on my kindle I thought I had it all figured out only to have things take a turn and I then realized I was way off base. Roberts is a master at leading her readers down a path, making them feel comfortable and confident and then artfully showing them a pathway that was before hidden. Twists and cliffhangers abound and I loved it! The best part is is that every action, every character, every storyline, every twist has meaning and is deliberate.
The characters were interesting and multidimensional. I found myself wanting to know more about them, trying to guess their roles in this story. Marvelous character development and stellar storytelling make What He Did an absolute page turner. I can’t wait to read the first book in this series (Little Girl Missing) as Rachel Hart is my favorite character.
J. G. Roberts is British, so American readers might need to look up a few phrases and abbreviations that may be new to them. On top of a great story, you are learning as well! 🙂
This is the second in the DCI Rachel Hart series. It certainly did not disappoint. JG Roberts has a fantastic way of telling a story. Getting you to know the characters without it all being about one person.
A really good storyline. This book had me hooked from the first page. JG Roberts has also set the scene for book three. I’ll certainly be reading that.
This is the second book in the Detective Rachel Hart series and I am loving it. Hooked from the first page this is a murder mystery and so much more. Plenty of tension and suspense, twists and turns galore. Essentially a whodunnit, I had my list of suspects and I was slowly whittling them down and I still got it wrong. I hate a book that is predictable, I like to use the old grey matter and work it out for myself. If I am wrong then this is a bonus. This series is turning out to be both gripping and addictive. An easy five stars and so Highly Recommended.
I would like to thank the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
I've not read this series before, but wish I had.
A thoroughly enjoyable thriller and I will look out for this author in the future.
I really liked the cover. It is very appealing designed. The writing style is pleasant and very fluently to read. The characters are very well described and look well thought out and consistently interesting. The tension is always present. The descriptions of surroundings, feelings and scenes were also very good. The story is told pleasant and it succeeds from the first pages to dive directly into the story. The storyline as a whole is very coherent and it seems very understandable and authentic. A very fascinating story that you won't like to stop reading.
I haven’t read Book 1 in the series but there’s enough info in Book 2 to be brought up to speed and so can easily be read as a stand alone
The premise for this book sounded intriguing, live on air Maddy reports a terrible car crash, she learns while speaking that the car involved is her husbands, Simon!....and so the story then unfolds re wether this is in fact an accident or more likely a deliberate act and if so why
Enter Detective Rachel Hart to try and solve the mystery and also to try and solve some of her own life problems!
The ensuing story was then quite basically ( imo ) told and had some irritating characters, the worst being Siena ( Maddy and Simon’s daughter ) who at 22 has to sleep with her Mum after the ‘ love of her life’ has chosen a new girlfriend, I mean I felt some sympathy but she was at times pathetic for her age
The actual bones of the story are quite disturbing and what is happening to Simon ( and others ) is something Detective Hart takes on with determination
However the non urgent tone of the book’s writing style plus the near ridiculous ending meant this in a near non ending sea of great and good books made it an averagely ok read
5/10

What He Did is the first Detective Rachel Hart book I've read, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the read! There is enough context and it is a mystery driven novel so you can join the series at any time without feeling like you are missing a big chunk of backstory.
This is a solid police procedural and an enjoyable read. It blends past and present together well and highlights topical subjects like assults by athletes. Roberts' does a great job teasing bits of information about Rachel's past and her relationship with her twin sister. I can't wait to see what's next!
Thank you to #netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
4 Stars from me
This is my first time reading anything by J G Roberts and I am delighted to say that I really took to our lead detective Rachel Hart although I can't help feeling that I should have read book 1 in the series first and I am going to suggest to anyone considering 'What He Did' to definitely go ahead and buy/download it but to also get yourself a copy of Little Girl Missing by the same author.
What He Did has a clever storyline and many potential suspects with red herrings and discoveries along the way. Detective Rachel Hart has an interesting style in terms of how she leads her team and also how she conducts her personal life, I feel I need to know her a little better to fully understand some of her ways.
I was quickly drawn into this book and keen to discover who the killer was as one by one a group of old team mates begin to be murdered and a hidden secret is revealed as the motive. The bulk of the book is essentially a whodunnit with a few other stories running concurrently (as you would expect) which interweave at salient points.
I am looking forward to book 3 and I have to say I've taken a real dislike to Rachel's boyfriend, Tim!
What He Did , second in the series of Detective Hart, is a book that will grab your attention from page one.
It has murder, secrets from years ago, family and the suspense keeps you turning the pages.
Did I guess ? No can't say I was 100 per cent right.
I also liked that you get to know Rachel more in her private life , there is more than one dimension to her.
I will be waiting in line to read the third book in the series. Give it a try you won't be disappointed .
Thanks to Net Galley, Bookouture for the opportunity to read What He Did
Thoroughly enjoyed. I thought I knew who it was but I was totally wrong! Even though this is book #2 its a standalone. Rachel is a great main character that I can relate to, but not so sure about Ruth! I look forward to reading more by this author. Thank you NetGalley.
This is the second book in the Rachel Hart series and is a really solid police procedural with Rachel attempting to manage a new lawyer boyfriend, a new woman friend and investigating a possible serial killer targeting her new friends husband. Glad we are seeing more of Rachel’s back story with her twin sister and the crimes mirror the bonds of sisterhood among women..
