Thank you netgalley, Jennifer Chase and Bookouture for allowing me to read and review this book.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Last Whisper, the second novel to feature Detective Katie Scott of the Pine Valley, California Sheriff’ Department.
Katie has just started as a Cold Case Detective and is looking over the open cases to find one suitable for investigation. She finds the sixth month old case of Amanda Payton who was kidnapped and held prisoner until she managed to escape. Katie visits Amanda to ask for help but is horrified when Amanda’s body is found murdered the next day. Then another woman disappears.
I thoroughly enjoyed Her Last Whisper which is a tense, exciting read with an interesting plot. It is told mainly from Katie’s third person perspective but there are glimpses of the latest victim’s suffering and the unnamed killer’s thoughts and actions. These latter are fairly standard and recount a twisted mind and the victim’s suffering, leaving the reader to try and guess the motive behind it. It’s fairly well done but doesn’t really interest me as I’m all about the investigation and I loved it in this novel. It covers a fair amount of ground, seems fairly logical and has enough reveals to keep the reader interested without giving too much away.
Katie Scott is a good protagonist. She is a smart, instinctual detective who trusts her “gut” to move the investigation forward in the right direction. It’s a good plot device to keep the reader interested but it sometimes requires a little swallowing of realism. She also suffers from undiagnosed PTSD from her time in the army but the novel doesn’t dwell on it although it gives the author the opportunity to emphasise the bonds of friendship she has and the need to count your blessings as life is too short etc. (a bit touchy-feely for me but maybe I’m just callous).
Her Last Whisper is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
3 Stars
Police procedural that unfortunately felt too choreographed/off-kilter to me.
Pros: I liked the ending, the intensity here is described well. I liked the K9 inclusion.
I also did not see the true culprits identity coming.
Cons: Events seem too choreographed and character dynamics felt misplaced, dialogue sometimes felt forced/too convenient. The PTSD flashbacks also broke immersion. I also had trouble with the inclusive thoughts of "truth" during some of the intense scenes, this made it feel out of place.
I also struggled to feel the terror of the culprit's presence, they seemed too PG-friendly, and again misplaced as a character.
I would suggest shifting the use of language around a little so the world doesn't seem to happily revolve around Detective Scott, and perhaps looking into some abnormal psychology for the culprit. This police procedural is missing a bit of that dark grit that crime thriller's really need.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and Bookouture publishers for this free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Fast pace, exciting and a twist at every page.I will look out for further releases from this author in future. Absolutely loved this book..was so engrossed read it in 2 days. Brilliant lead characters..well written and enthralling. Couldn't put it down. Cant wait for the next one...definitely recommend it.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the digital ARC of Her Last Whisper by Jennifer Chase in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own. Detective Katie Scott has just been put in charge of the cold cases when a cold case becomes very active. Someone is killing women after kidnapping them. The story goes back and forth between solving the case and Katie dealing with PTSD from her time serving in the Army in Afghanistan. The book kept my interest. Recommend it!
I did stop to read book #1 before starting this. Here we keep up with Katie and Cisco as they again pick up the reins of justice for the down trodden.
This book opens with a woman being murdered just hours after being spoken to by Katie. Someone is abducting women and holding them prisoner before killing them.
I can honestly say I was totally looking at the wrong person for this, when the reveal came it was "ah of course" as the person was totally beneath notice until the last possible moment,
Loved it, have added Jennifer Chase to my watch list.
Her Last Whisper by Jennifer Case is the second book in the Katie Scott series, but I haven't read the first one.
Katie suffers from PTSD and sometimes elements in her job as detective bring up memories and emotions she would like to avoid. Her recent post involves cold cases, but one of those cases comes back to life with a new murder.
I found the interruptions involving memories of her time in Afghanistan a little annoying, but understand the connection to her PTSD symptoms. The police procedural aspects also raised a few questions.
Interesting enough to keep reading, but didn't love it.

Police Procedural. Oct. 21, 2019.
I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Her Last Whisper’ by Jennifer Chase in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Detective Katie Scott is heading the Cold Case Unit assisted by Deputy McGaven. As she’s looking through the files Katie comes across a case that involves Amanda Payton, a nurse at the First Memorial Hospital, who six months previously had been kidnapped before managing to escape. She told the police that the man who held her said she had to ‘tell the truth’. Katie visits Amanda and promises that she’ll help find the perpetrator but before she’s able to stick to her promise Amanda’s body is discovered. Katie comes across a similar case, a nameless woman with connections to the hospital who’s being held at a psychiatric unit under the name of Jane Doe. Katie believes these cases are related but can she identify the kidnapper before he kidnaps another woman?
‘Her Last Whisper’ is the second in the Detective Katie Scott series and is just as gripping as the first. There’s plenty of excitement, drama, twists and turns, and a few red herrings thrown in for good measure, and with the number of possible suspects I was surprised when Katie revealed the identity of the kidnapper. This thriller is well-written and so easy to read I finished it in twenty-four hours. I’m looking forward to reading more of Katie Scott and I hope Deputy McGaven continues to assist her.
I really liked the cover. It is very appealing designed. The writing style is pleasant and very fluently to read. The characters are very well described and look well thought out and consistently interesting. The tension is always present. The descriptions of surroundings, feelings and scenes were also very good. The story is told pleasant and it succeeds from the first pages to dive directly into the story. The storyline as a whole is very coherent and it seems very understandable and authentic. A very fascinating story that you won't like to stop reading.
I am so enjoying this series. katie is a kick ass detective . someone is taking women but one escaped Amanda . katie promises to keep her safe.but something happens ; I love her partner in the police force and her ex sergeant turns up asking for her help to find his brother .and love her dog very good story very twisty and addictive I so recommend this series cant wait for book 3 .
I am loving this new police procedural series by Jennifer Chase. A very Interesting, intense read that will have you captivated from the first chapter. You will love the Detective Katie Scott, she is such a compelling character. I like how the author tackles the subject ptsd, and how she portrays a strong woman and how she handles it.
Anxiously awaiting for the next book.

Her Last Whisper is indeed a race to the finish. I loved the main character a battle weary, veteran still at war with the images of death and desolation she still hasn’t managed to leave behind. A second chance in a new division, the cold case sector is supposed to be quiet and uneventful. Trouble seems to follow Det. Scott with a serial killer on the lose.our unsung hero is her military trained German Shepard Cisco . A more lovable soldier you will never find. There were so many suspects in the mix I must confess my standout suspect was not the killer in the end I hope you will be luckier. Happy reading!
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
This the second book in this series I didn't read the first but I'm going to.
Detective Katie has been detective with the Pine Valley Sheriff’s Department and has been assigned to investigate cold cases.
Her first case is about a missing woman name Amanda who was held captive for a week but manage to escape but she couldn't recognize her captor because she never saw him but he kept whisper in her ear about wanting to know the truth.
When Amanda is found dead Kate feels they let her down and when she tumble over another woman kidnapped she is determine not let her down as she starts to dig she realize there serial killer in mix as she and her k-9 Cisco investigate she also dealing with a missing person case that ties with her former sergeant Nick.
Kate is a strong female lead who does her job while controlling her PTSD. I like she is driven to correct a wrong while she dealing with her past. I really enjoy this book Katie remind of Lily Rush with a mix of Olivia Benson. Can't wait for the next book.
The development of the character Katie Scott is one of my favorite parts of this book. There is also plenty of action, suspense, surprises and twists. I didn't see the killer coming at all. This is quickly becoming a must read series!
This is a J. P.Beaumont novel. Alan Dale, a man from the past shows up on J. P.’s doorstep with a baby in tow asking for help. Alans daughter, the baby’s Mother, walked out of the hospital after giving birth and disappeared, she has been into drugs and living on the street. Alan has temporary custody of his Grandaughter but he can’t go home to Texas until he gets a signature relinquishing custody from the baby’s parents. He wants J. P to help him. The trail leads to unexpected revelations.
This is a great addition to the J. P. Beaumont series. This story is part of a series but could be read as a stand alone. There are surprises and twists throughout the book and I look forward to another book by this author. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
This second book with Detective Katie Scott proves that this author has another winning series. Katie has achieved the rank of detective with the Pine Valley Sheriff’s Department and has been assigned to investigate cold cases. Her first case is the kidnapping of Amanda Payton who was held for a week, but managed to escape. She never saw the man who took her, but he continually whispered that he wanted to know the truth. When another woman is abducted, Katie knows that she is dealing with a serial killer and time is running out. As clues slowly surface, Katie and her K-9 Cisco continue to search for the current victim while also trying to locate the missing brother of her former sergeant, Nick. Katie is a strong female lead who does her job while controlling her PTSD from her time in the military. A wonderful mystery with the author taking you along through the entire investigation. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Katie Scott is finally taking up her post at the Pine Valley police department following a period of rest and recovery after working as a temporary member of staff on a very distressing case. As the new but lone detective in the cold case department she knows she has her work cut out to help ease the pain of some of the town's residents who have never had a chance to begin to live again after the unexplained death of a loved one.
When the body of a young woman she was trying to help is discovered just hours after they had first met Katie instead finds herself leading a very current investigation. With her partner from the previous case she begins to discover clues which lead to one suspect in particular but none strong enough to make an arrest. As the pressure builds her ex-sergeant from her army days turns up unexpectedly to ask a favour and her days become shorter as her responsibilities increase.
This was an excellent, exhilarating read and I had to keep reading just another page, another page, as everything raced towards a high tension ending which left me wishing there was more because it had been so good. Hopefully there will be a third book to look forward to in the near future.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who has read the first book or enjoys a good read with a lead character who is driven despite her difficult past towards a successful future. I loved it.
A woman, begging for police protection, has been killed and Detective Katie Scott takes that death very personally. Amanda Payton ran in front of a passing police car, claiming to have been kidnapped, but with little evidence to support her claim the case went cold. Now Amanda is dead and Katie is determined to catch the killer, a man she believes is behind a series of murders in Pine Valley. When another woman disappears, Katie knows her time is running out. How far will she go to avenge Amanda and make up for her department’s fatal mistake?
