Incredible Plant-Based Desserts by Anthea Cheng
Gorgeous photos of delicious desserts that are easy to follow with ingredients that are not too difficult to find have inspired me to join the author’s blog, instagram and facebook pages. I am hoping to try one of the recipes tonight and have it for breakfast in the morning. I am definitely interested in trying m ore than one of the recipes in the future and plan to share the title not only on my blog but with my sister and others. I do believe this book is one I would love to have in my library. Why? Because I am moving more and more toward vegan 24/7 and this book would allow me to have treats and sweets that are beautiful and tasty while sticking tot he vegan lifestyle.
The book is set up with the author’s story first followed by how to cook vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free with suggested equipment, ingredients and some substitutions provided. There is also information on food allergies and how to create sweets for a variety of situations. The rest of the book is broken uup into Breakfasts, Snacks, Cafe-style treats, Celebrations and ends with condiments and frostings.
Some of the layered desserts, cheesecakes, tiramisu, caramels and buttercream frostings intrigued me. I also found the ways of creating pancakes, cakes and muffins definitely worth trying as they are different from other vegan recipes I have seen.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing-Quarry for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
I really enjoyed this book -- especially the focus on not 'just colorful vegan food...' but 'about the 'rainbow or diversity of ways that people can nourish themselves'. Having developed new food sensitivities and awareness, I've realized that I prefer a plant-based diet despite not being a vegetarian/vegan. This book encourages self-care activities even outside of the kitchen which is something that can be forgotten in this fast-paced day and age. The photos are beautiful and colorful, the ingredients fairly easy to find, and the instructions numbered (needed in my case). There are also interesting tips that I learned from ('black salt is high in sodium chloride so it smells and tastes like eggs', for less sweet desserts, use coconut sugar for regular sugar, etc.). It's a book that's a good resource for those looking for more plant-based desserts.
I enjoyed this book with on caveat.
I loved how the author broke down the ideas behinds the plant based aspects and how it made a difference in each recipe. this helps me when I want to create my own desserts,
The instructions are clear and concise. I feel I can follow them and get the product described by the author. But....
I love the color scheme of the book. The over all aesthetic are lovely but you can tell so much has been edited and done up. I didn't feel like the photos are truly what the food looks like.
I understand there is much color and that's what the author was going for but the pictures didn't portray true color- it all looked like an Instagram filter.
As a strict Vegan i absolutely loved this book - its colourful, beautiful pictures, great recipes, sweet cakes and deserts. whats not to love about this book - I cant wait to get the hardcopy so i can sit and flick thorough it and just look at the amazing pictures and try out all the recepies. 10 out of 10.
Who the heck is this woman’s photographer?! Seriously?!? I was shocked and in awe of the stunningly beautiful, bright and colorful photos heavily sprinkled throughout Incredible Plant-Based Desserts! Honestly, these cookbook photos are the cookbook photos that other cookbook photos aspire to be!
Incredible Plant-Based Desserts was just that, incredible. I own and have read quite a few vegan cookbooks. Most of which are filled with recipes that call for a ton of ingredients that 1) I’ve never heard of and 2) I can’t even begin to pronounce. Cheng’s recipes were not only filled with ingredients I knew and could pronounce, but lots of ingredients that I already had in my kitchen!
I know that a vegan diet isn’t for everybody, believe me, I’ve been listening to people criticize vegetarian and vegan eating for longer than I can remember, and there are some vegan treats that I’m not even into. Like granola. As hard as I try, I cannot seem to enjoy granola. But come on, who would say no to delicious sounding recipes like these; Very Berry Pie Infused with Chamomile, Notella Cheesecake, Rainbow Pear Chai Cake (which is the most beautiful looking cake I have ever seen), Berry Chocolate Mousse Tart and Tiramisu Trifle with Caramelized Popcorn!
I loved how Cheng listed the recipe alternatives you can use for allergies and diet options. The alternatives were broken down in a helpful and useful quick guide, that I can already see myself referring to in any future vegan cooking adventures.
Honestly, though, those photos!!! They were amazing and were able to show the incredible depth of color a plant-based diet can encompass. I also really enjoyed the photos of market scenes, plants and herself that were thrown into the mix!
The only negative is that, just like in any baking book, there will be a learning curve. We, as readers, are typically not going to have the necessary equipment, or the means to go out and purchase the equipment, just to make some desserts for ourselves. We aren’t professionals (for the most part) and the majority of what we try to bake will not look anywhere near as perfect and beautiful as Cheng’s creations, but if you have fun stepping out of your kitchen comfort zone, and enjoy some tasty (if not a little lopsided) baked goods, then I’m sure you’ll love Incredible Plant-Based Desserts. I, for one, can’t wait to try out several of Cheng’s recipes!!!
If you're not hungry before reading this book you certainly are after!!!
Amazing!
Well done!
All those recipes and explanation and those wonderful photos!
I just want to try at least half of those recipes, I'm hungry now! So many choices, so many healthy options...
Maybe my favorites are for breakfast.
Really interesting and well put together!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Absolutely stunning!!! The pictures and colors of the food in this book make it a work of art. While I do not eat this type of diet, the recipes and pictures would make me want to try. This would make for a beautiful gift for any foodie. If I knew this author personally I would want them to cater my next party :)
The full color photos of these desserts are very eye catching. There are some basic, easy to make desserts and some a bit more complicated but easy enough to make with step by step instructions.
Amazing what one can make and eat and be satisfied with being a vegan.
I look forward to making many of these desserts now that the weather is conducive to baking with the cooler temperatures

I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you.

I was generously offered a e-book copy ahead of release of Incredible Plant-Based Desserts by Anthea Cheng from the publisher for a honest review through Netgalley.
The book starts with some kitchen gadgets that may make your life easier. Then, even though it is called Incredible Plant-Based Desserts, the book starts with some breakfasts. Some of these may be familiar or unfamiliar. I know I'm not a fan of ONOs or smoothies, so I didn't try some of these based upon that. There are some fun recipes, such as popsicles that people with kids would do well with. The snacks section was full of things I would consider desserts and not snacks, but that's probably my age showing.
Many of the recipes are sweetened by dates. Unfortunately, I do not care for dates - at all. Which means that any recipe that required dates would not be one I would try. I learned that even using dates for sweetening is not something I enjoy based on recipes I have made in the past. However, if you are looking for a less refined sweetener, dates is the way to go.
The layout is pretty. There are beautiful, vibrant color images, and little thought bubbles in painted swirls.
I only tried two recipes: the Chocolate Brownie Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies and the Cookie Dough Bars. I initially planned to try about six recipes. However, there are two big drawbacks to the recipes in this book: the ingredients can be expensive and hard to find (I paid $15 for just one ingredient for the cookie dough bars) and the resulting treats taste healthy or like non-vegans expect vegan food to taste. Unfortunately, for my family and I, those are deal breakers. My family asked me not to make any more of the planned recipes after two disappointments.
I found the recipes to be very easy to make and not particularly time consuming. They also were very rich. So if you like rich treats, these will be right up your alley.
I would recommend this book to vegan families and parents who are trying to make healthier treats for the kids. Many of the recipes engage kids to participate with the decorating and are lunchbox ready.
This will be a great cookbook if you're in the target audience. For others, it's not likely to be a good fit. While I cook vegetarian, homemade and gluten free, very few of the recipes were the type that I enjoy making with/for my kids (my 16 y/o son Jack does a lot of baking with me).
The photos are very bright but were very strange on one of my devices. I read digital ARCs on an older iPad and on my computer. The photos were a little jarring on my computer but were okay, but on my iPad they were incredibly oversaturated, dark and grainy. I read other cookbooks on it often, so I don't think it's just my device. In any case, I'm not sure how well this cookbook will translate for some e-readers.
Many of the recipes are not for foods I would call desserts. There is a large breakfast section with things like overnight oats, for instance, and other foods like muffins are listed. I guess I see how these are sweet and can seem like a dessert, but it struck me as odd.
Many recipes are raw and many are gluten free or can be adapted. Most of the recipes are VERY healthy -- they are made with whole foods, lots of fruits, no refined sugar, and without fake ingredients. Many are also quite colorful, employing ingredients like brightly colored "superfood" powders. While some recipes are on the easier side, many struck me as a bit complicated. Nutritional information is not given.
I read a digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
Incredible Plant-Based Desserts by Anthea Cheng is filled with vibrant, color photos depicting recipes found in her cookbook. Cheng seems to like bright colors and color combinations when creating desserts. You will find plenty of decorations depicting bright purples, yellows and neon green. If you like this style of decorating, you will love her cookbook.
Her cookbook offers recipes for breakfasts, snacks, desserts and condiments. Here are some of the recipes you'll find in her cookbook:
Easy Baked Banana Pancakes
Chocolate Cups, Three Ways
Cookie Dough Bars
Classic Buttery Scones
Unbaked Notella Cheesecake
Customizable Classic Baked Vanilla Cake
Chocolate Ganache
Whipped Coconut Cream

Incredible Plant-Based Desserts features a wide range of vegan recipes from cakes and cookies to popsicles and muffins. Each recipe is accompanied by a gorgeous and visually appealing photo of the decadent treat. The instructions are fairly simple though several of the recipes are slightly more advanced. Personally, I'm not a very good baker but I could see myself successfully making a few of these sweets. The only bad part of this book is deciding which dessert to make first!

The photography is so bright and fun, and really showcases the food and subjects of the photo. I love how some photos are inserts and some are full pages, but regardless of size, the photos are perfect for this cookbook! I also loved how colorful the pages are in general; there always seems to be some sort of photo or art on each page, making this a really fun and upbeat cookbook. It makes you want to cook and experience the food it describes.
This cookbook feels very personal. There are asides on some of the pages that add a personal touch to the recipes and give little anecdotes about the food presented. It just makes it more personal and adds a nice touch.
This isn't just a cookbook, it is more like a lifestyle book that highlights food and eating. This is shown in some of the photographs which focus on plants and whole-based living. This is combined with information about eating vegan food makes it more of a handbook for a lifestyle.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading through this cookbook and I look forward to trying some of the recipes inside!
When we think of vegan or plant-based, we don't usually think of dessert. In fact, as someone who has recently switched to a plant-based diet, dessert often presents the biggest challenge. So many desserts require dairy and/or eggs, that dessert seems like it would be a thing of the past. How exciting, then, to have an entire cookbook of delicious desserts that meet our dietary needs. I am excited to try more of these desserts!
This is a beautiful book full of stunning photographs. If you want to convince people to have a go at a recipe this is the way to do it. Everything in the book looks so delicious and vibrant, I would definitely want one for my coffee table. Some of the recipes are very appealing and I will definitely be trying a few out. The only thing I would have loved to see a few more of were the quick everyday basic recipes interlaced with the more complicated special occasion recipes. But overall brilliant a stunning book.
This was a fun cookbook. It has a lot of interesting recipes as well as beautiful photos. This book shows that being vegan/vegetarian doesn't mean eating boring food.
I love dessert, probably a bit too much at times, so a book with plant based desserts? I'm all over that.
The chapter on breakfasts is definitely the one I am most impressed with I found that the recipes were all easy to understand and follow. Most of these recipes were also easy enough for someone without much experience with cooking.
Recipes that I have tried out and recommend are the
Apple pie overnight oats
Peaches and cream sourdough french toast
the apple pie overnight oats are amazing!
I have the Unbaked Notella cheesecake on my to be tried list as well it looks so delicious.
This book is jam packed with vibrant plant based cakes and sweet treats. Although I am yet to try any of the recipes, if they taste as good as they look in the illustrations then this book is an absolute winner.
A fantastic resource for people with allergies and sensitivities who are looking for impressive desserts made with alternative ingredients.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy of this title in exchange for an unbiased review.
Wow, this has to be one of the most beautiful cookbooks I've ever looked through. It's full of stunning photographs of both the recipes and Cheng's environment. Even the recipe pages are beautifully designed. The title is true that these are incredible looking desserts, and I immediately bookmarked several that I want to try. From staples like how to make your own chocolate, to how to make a tiramisu trifle that looks amazing, this book has it all. It's one of those cookbooks that makes you wish you had the real thing in front of you!
