Get Out of Your Head: Stopping the Spiral of Toxic Thoughts by Jennie Allen is a must read. I don’t know about you, but I know during these hard days of the pandemic and hearing all the news of what was happening all around the world, hearing in the news that people were dying, people were hurting, and people were hating and living in fear, I know that my mind was filled with bad news. I had so my disturbing thoughts that spiraled out of control and caused me to have much anxiety and fear. These thoughts leave us feeling lonely, hurting, scared, and always thinking the worst. I thank God that He showed me this book at the perfect time. I love reading the book of Philippians and I have memorized and prayed several of these scriptures over the years, but I needed the reminder of how Paul teaches us to renew our minds, he teaches us what we need to think about and what our goals in life are, and what God has called us to do. Jennie takes us verse by verse through Philippians, explaining and challenging us with hard questions that helped me understand better and see how I let my mind race out of control and how we have to choose to stop the negative thoughts and think on things that are true, pure, lovely, admirable and praise-worthy.
Jennie tells us that the war starts in our mind but that God equips us through His Word to fight the enemy. God’s Word is our weapon. God gives us peace and strength to face every hard situation we face and His word teaches us that we can have joy when we lean on Him and trust Him to take us through. I wrote down so many notes from this book that I will go back and read again and apply.
Here are a couple of quotes from the book that I really liked:
Because Jesus trusted our Heavenly Father in His deepest moment of grief before He went to the cross, we can choose to stop being afraid of what the future holds and trust God.
Because Jesus won the victory over sin and death and has made you more than conquerors through His love, you can choose to be grateful no matter what.
I thank NetGalley and Waterbrook Publishing for allowing me to read and give my own honest opinions about the book.
Allen's Get Out of Your Head attempts to address the negative thoughts that Christian women encounter in their spiritual journey. She does a good job of identifying the key issues that they might face including self-doubt, fear of the unknown, cynicism as well as provides a framework for address them. I wish she had delved deeper into these issues and perhaps provided more diverse examples to beef up her arguments. Hence, this book was not entirely what I had expected.
A helpful book during this tough year. It's not going to get better unless we change our mindset. A great book that's inspiring and it gives hope.
I have loved Jennie Allen's previous books and was excited to read this one.
I like that it is laced with her own stories and struggles - this makes it authentic and I am more likely to take heed.
There is much good advice and think it is a helpful book for folks to read in order to increase their awareness of their own mental health struggles and how to overcome them.
Thanks to the publishers and Net Galley for the ARC to review.
I enjoyed Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen. This was much needed, and I was thankful to read this in my the middle of COVID-19 in 2020. While sharing her very personal journey with readers, she challenges us to nip toxic thoughts in the bud. I enjoyed the constant encouragement to use scripture to combat those thoughts. She gives much to think about, including that we have a choice once thoughts enter our heads. We have a choice! I also enjoyed her sharing about the last 2 percent. I’ll let you discover what that is about. Very worth reading!
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
One of the best books I’ve read in awhile! I couldn’t put it down! I stayed on the treadmill extra time today to finish it. So good! I love Jennie Allen!
Side note: I was also half asleep when I wrote this review and I missed saying how much it really and truly affected me. It was such a timely read and I’ve already been choosing to change my thoughts when I notice the negative ones creep in. I am so thankful I was able to read this! I’m so appreciate of Jennie Allen’s transparency and her willingness to let God use her! I especially loved her sharing about her daughter’s dyslexia. It was nice to know I’m not alone, as a fellow parent!
Much needed book! We all need to take back our thoughts and stop allowing the toxic to control us. Jennie Allen is one of my go to Bible Study Teachers!
I found Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen to be meaningful encouragement to stop the toxic rehearsals in my head and replace it with His Truth. The basis of the book I think fits this statement: “Learning to capture our thoughts matters. Because how we think shapes how we live.” So important that I renew my mind. To be committed to breaking the cycles/spirals that are not taking me in the right direction. To be active in the fight.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

In a time in which we are "in our heads"so much, this book is a great reminder how we must fill our minds with God's truth. It has always been easier to listen to the messages the world and our own broken hearts tell us than remember the truth of who God says we are and what he is calling us to be. This book is a way to help us to see what ways we need our hearts and minds to be transformed and how we can live in the truth God has given us.
Our world is spiraling right now. So when the author, Jennie Allen talked of our thoughts spiraling she had my attention. Our new normal is filled with uncertainties. How do we keep from dwelling on our fears? The author reminds us that the greatest spiritual battle of our generation is being fought between our ears. Our thoughts. She uses the verse in 2 Corinthians 10:5 which tells us to take every thought captive and then submit it to God. She walks us through Philippians 4 where we can learn to dwell on thoughts that are whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable.
Jennie is very personable in how she illustrates her struggles. We find these are areas we battle with also, such as the being distracted when we try to be alone with God. She tells us we must sit quietly before God. Be still and know Him. Meditate and pray. She lays out guidelines and backs them up with scripture.
I enjoyed this book and it is one that I took notes and will be referring back to it again and again.
I have followed Jennie Allen from multiple years but hadn’t read any of her books before this. I’ve always found her to be strong in conviction and faith but equally emphasizes love and compassion for others. These qualities were woven throughout her words in this book. As a woman that has grown up in the church, I have heard many times how we just need to choose the joy of the lord and that then depression and anxiety will quickly be healed. There has been a discomfort and almost shaming of mental health because it seems if you have t,rue faith in Jesus then how can you be sad? Well, reality is much more complex than that and I, so grateful Jennie Allen didn’t gloss over the complexities or the reality of real life. There is no ounce of shaming found in this book. It was a gift to read.
I had the privilege to attend Jennie's book launch back in February, and her passion got me so incredibly excited to read her message in this book.
I liked that the book was not frilly or sugar-coated. Instead, this book laid out the battle of our mind like the all-out war that it is. I appreciated her sharing her honesty with the readers of her experience with spiritual warfare and showing us the '2%' that she encourages her readers to share with others. It laid out a good frame of mind to be in as she dissected the downward spirals we allow our thoughts to spin in and how we can turn them into upward spirals.
This book is excellent. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I will look back to her words and the fantastic imagery throughout the book for many years to come.
Chuck full of information on mental health , but amazingly readable. Honestly written with a lot of tips on how to stop negative thinking . Will be on pile to read again.
This book wasn’t for me. I found it to be a bit repetitive and honestly nothing new for anyone who has been in therapy before. Yes, it has a Christian slant, but I personally didn’t find value in that. It felt very similar to the majority of self-help Christian books out there in style and formatting.
I love Jennie Allen. However, I found this to be a difficult read. I look forward to one day, giving it another try. So for now, I am giving this book 3/5 stars.
Coming from a background of PTSD, some books are harder to dive into - which isn't the author's fault. So for this reason, 3 out 5 stars is my verdict.
I am very thankful for the opportunity to retry reading this book at a later date.
This is a book that is so needed right now. We tend to not talk about our thought life, and how it can make us feel so stuck if we are hard on ourselves. Jennie Allen is so transparent as she shares her experiences with worry that affected her life. Allen takes us step by step to show readers how we can have a healthy thought life with God's help. I will be re-read this book and will recommend this book for years to come. Thank you NetGalley for an advanced reader's copy.
Get Out of Your Head is the perfect book to read for bits of encouragement that is desperately needed in our current world. It is a book you can return to again and again for positivity.
Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen, is one of the best books I have read on taking our thoughts captive and what it really means in our everyday life. This book is based on the book of Philippians, and it inspires and equips us to transform our emotions, our outlook, and even our circumstances by taking control of our thoughts.
I find that it is easy to get caught up in thinking negative, destructive thoughts -- and much of it happens without me trying to fight those thoughts. As I was reading this book, it became so clear just how much those toxic and destructive thoughts can actually harm us, as I think so many of them every day! What I loved about this book, was how Jennie Allen connected what scientific studies about the brain and neurology have proved, to what the Bible says. She confirms the words of the Bible to be true according to scientific studies, and I loved this.
All in all, this book held so much goodness and I will be re-reading it and also recommending it to a lot of people.
Wow! No really, wow! This book could not have come at a better time with everything going on right now in our world! I love the message of this book to take a hold of one negative thought and replace it with a thought centered on what God says, or God thinks of me. I am excited to change myself, change my family and change my community by changing one thought at a time.
When I first heard about Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen, I was excited to get my hands on it. I heard Jennie speak at this year's IF Gathering and was impressed by her talk. This is a must read for anyone who gets mired down by negative thoughts. She breaks down some of the science about our brains without getting too technical and losing the reader. She shows how intricately God created all of us and that our brains and thoughts can be changed in either lead to spiral to the depths of despair or can spiral up to heights of greatness. I highlighted so many great things that it;s hard to pick out just a few things but my biggest take aways were: 1, It takes 10 minutes to completely change the building blocks of the brain from just 1 thought, which depending on the thought means you're only 10 minutes away from a fresh start. 2, Jesus volunteered to die for our sins, knowing full well what it would cost Him and he did it JOYFULLY. I've read it before but this time it hit me differently. He went through his life serving others and healing and helping the people who would ultimately be responsible for his suffering and death. 3. My thought life has everything to do with my current health and I need to get that under control before I can make lasting changes that will positively impact the rest of my life.
Overall I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who struggles with negativity. And looking at the world chaos today, I'd say that's most everyone!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest review.
