Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. A good story of secrets, lies and deceit. Suzi has a secret, Nora, her new neighbor knows this. Nora has her own secrets. This was a fun, fast-paced thriller. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I expected a full-blown family drama from given the title called "The Other Wife", but this was more mellow and what lacked in the fast-paced action department was made up in the suspense department. The Other Wife is a great book to curl up with on a quiet weekend. It's suspenseful, twisty and keeps you hooked till the very end.
When Suzi and Nick move into a quiet neighborhood, having moved from a bustling city pregnant and having quit her job Suzi finds it challenging to settle down in the countryside. However, things between Suzi and Nick are not fine at all. Suzi hides a terrible secret from her husband Nick and Nick is a controlling partner, who watches Suzi like a hawk. So when Nora moves to the neighboring cottage, Suzi is happy and looking forward to some company. But there's more to Nora than what Suzie knows. Will Suzie share her terrible secret with Nora?
Meanwhile, Elle spends her days in her perfect home, fixated on keeping up appearances. But when her husband betrays her, it unravels a secret going all the way back to her childhood. She’ll do whatever it takes to hold on to him, even if that means murder. After all, she’s done it before… Caught up in their own secrets and lies, these strangers will soon realize they have more in common than they could ever have imagined. When a shocking event brings them together, their lives will never be the same again.
The characters of this book were great and the plot was good too. It moved a tad bit slow from what I like, but the story and twists were really good. There seemed to be a lot of chapters on Suzie and Nora too, Elle had a smaller share and I'd have loved to know more about the incidents from her past and what shaped her to be the person she was. The ending was fantastic. But there too, I'd have loved to more about how it came to be.
Thank you, NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and Claire McGowan for an arc!
I was able to read this book thanks to NetGalley. This was a really interesting thriller and I couldn’t figure out what was happening until near the end.
Suzi has moved out to the remote country with her husband when a new neighbor named Nora move in next door. Suzi is expecting a baby and her secret is that she believes it belongs to her lover rather than her husband. Nora has secrets of her own. The book takes many twists after that. I really enjoyed this book but I do wish some of the characters had been developed further. I will recommend to friends! Thanks again to NetGalley!
The Other Wife was such a great read. Such an awesome and was a really enjoyable read. This was my first book to read by this author and I admit it wont be the last. I didn’t wanna put it down, I love all the twists, the suspense and all the tension. I live to be stressed out by a book haha. I would definitely recommend this book to any thriller seeker.
Suzi and Nick move to the secluded countryside. Suzi is 6 months pregnant and Nick is getting more controlling.
Suzi feels alone until Nora moves in next door. She hopes she is someone who she can get to know. But Nora knows more about Suzi than she lets on.Nora also has her own secrets too.
Thanks NetGalley
Many Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My, what wicked people live between the pages of this book! They are all about as crazy as it gets, but add a complete lack of moral compass and you get an incendiary combination of people who collide in the middle of a bitter English winter.
Lonely Suzi, pregnant and recently relocated from London to the isolated countryside lives in an expensive fortress of a home, She spends her days pining for a man she is cheating with, a man who has gone mysteriously silent.
Nora, Suzi's impoverished neighbor, spends her days spying on Suzi, wondering how she ended up widowed and almost bankrupt after a life of luxury with her doctor husband.
And then there is Nick, Suzi's controlling husband, who monitors her every move. After years of trying, he is obsessed with his wife's pregnancy and has no qualms gaslighting her to keep her helpless and tied to him. He controls the money, the home, the extensive network of surveillance he uses to keep tabs on Suzi. All for her own good, of course.
None of these people are very sympathetic. Nora's many incarnations border on shape shifting. Suzi is dimwitted and seems oblivious to the consequences of her actions. And Nick is just despicable on every level. Any could be the villian in this story, and in many ways they all are.
But that's the genius of The Other Wife. Your preconceived notions of right and wrong get twisted like an evening at Cirque du Soleil. The reader bounces between outrage and justification as the story of Nora, Suzi, and the men who warp their lives unravels. The moral ambiguity, and the way it feels like a shock of cold water when you buy into it, makes this a gem of domestic suspense.
On a personal note, I realize it is a common tool in this genre for the story to be told out of order. Chapters that leap ahead appear and are rolled back by the following ones as the story unfolds. I don't mind this, but I found the sudden insertion of the police detectives , as the story jumped ahead two months then bounced back, a bit jarring. It required a moment of regrouping that took me out of the narrative. For me, personally, it didn't work as well, but others may disagree.
Claire McGowan has written a delicious novel of psychological twists and turns. There is so much to enjoy while reading, and to think about when the last page is turned. If stories of domestic drama where nothing is as it seems appeal to you, this one will be a welcome addition to your book pile!
This starts slowly and I found it a little difficult to keep the characters straight at the beginning, but stick with it and you're rewarded with an amazing thriller - loved it!
Well this book was so confusing that start, that once the first twist was given, I had to go back and re-read the beginning all over again to really understand what was going on. Once I was moved past that, I realized that knowing which character was which was very important to the story, it was a very interesting read.
Every time I thought I knew what was going on everything would shift. I made me question everything and wonder if I really knew what I was even reading anymore.
I highly recommend this but pay careful attention to the characters as there are many and most of them are important and likely to come up later on in the story.
Engaging Storytelling.....
Psychological suspense, taut, atmospheric and gripping. A group of apparent strangers, troubled pasts and a shocking incidence - engaging storytelling from Claire McGowan. Tense, compulsive resding.

Oh gosh talk of being addicted to a book I certainly addicted to this one. I could genuinely put it down from the first page. Although I had too. In the end being ill. I fell asleep reading otherwise I would have continued until the end. Suzie and Eleanor. Both brilliant characters each in their own way. At first I did not know which of the two I was routing for. They both had things going for them. If anything I would have to say Eleanor especially after the death of her husband. ... However Suzie had her own problems with Nick. At first unaware of what he was doing to he.r. The twists kept coming throughout the book. At one point the twists kept you on the edge of your seat. Just wanting to know more and more, leaving me breathless with anticipation. Would would Eleanor carry out her plan, would Suzie let her. More to the point the change in Nick was unexpected. He's definitely a dark horse..I would definitely recommend this book. Well written and brilliant storyline.

Did you want to go for a ride? Well read this book. There is so much going on and it’s so fast paced you will not want to put it down.
From the title you can guess that there is a woman scorned. Well I can’t give it away but that’s partly true! We have Suzy a pregnant housewife and Nora a widower. Suzy is married to a man she does not love and rightfully so. He’s controlling and very demanding. Then Nora moved in next door (the only two houses for a while). They become friends of sorts. But then Suzy starts to notice odd things happening. She is not sure who is responsible but she’s determined to find out.
This was an enjoyable read and it’s out now.
The Other Wife by Claire McGowan was my second book by this author and I was so excited to receive an advanced copy. It did not disappoint! Full of twists and turns I did not see coming - I could not walk away until I knew the fate of Suzi, isolated from friends and family on a desolate countryside with only her controlling husband Nick by her side. Suzi has strayed before from their marriage and now finds herself even more cut off from friends, family and suddenly pregnant and uncertain of the baby’s father. She looks forward to a neighbor and when Nora moves in across the road she confides more than she should. Nora is not who she says she is... What a great read for a dark and stormy winter evening! I received an ARC of this book, all opinions are my own.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC of The Other Wife by Claire McGowan.
Nora has moved to this remote small town next to a quiet couple absolutely on purpose. They might not know her, but she certainly knows them, specifically the wife Suzi. And while Nora learns as much as she can about Suzi, Suzi is learning exactly why her new friend might want to get closer to her. Are her intentions good?
This was a fast, fun, and compulsively readable story. It was well written with complex characters and an unpredictable storyline. I had no idea what to expect the whole time, so that made it all the more fun. I highly recommend for a roller coaster ride.
This was very suspenseful domestic thriller. I enjoy books told from different points of view because they offer you different perspectives and often keep you guessing. This one did not disappoint! I thought I knew where the plot was going, but then I would be surprised.
A great read indeed with enough twists and turns to keep turning the pages! I will certainly be looking for more by this author.
This book had a strong start. The characters were distinct, their situations and backgrounds intriguing and the likelihood of your guessing where they might end up slim to none. But as the book progressed, it got a little more ... fantastical with the characters making decisions that were not only a little irrational, but also (and this a cardinal sin for me) out-of-character. Finally, the climax of the novel involved the fabrication of a completely unnecessary and complicated cover story for something that could have been 99% explained by telling some limited version of the truth. Having read another book by this author that was part women's fiction, part mystery-suspense, I was somewhat disappointed to see what started out as a strong book turn into a Lifetime Movie of the Week. I listened (and read) to the end, but honestly, about 80% in, I honestly didn't care what happened to any of the characters. I will say this, though ... if you like so-twisty-you-get-whiplash novels, this might work for you. For me, I prefer when the mystery and the suspense centers around perfectly normal (at least outwardly) people, caught up in highly abnormal circumstances that flirt with, but don't cross the line into the unbelievable. This one, for me, sadly, stepped just a smidge over that line. But, this author is good, and I am by no means dissauded by this book from reading her others.
Audible Note: I listened to most of this book, and read and listened when I got close to the end. The narrator was good, and didn't get in the way of the story.
"The Other Wife" is the story of Suzi, a pregnant woman in an unhappy marriage to Nick, who is jealous and controlling, and has moved Suzi out to the country from the city where there are no neighbors and its just them. Suzi is harboring a terrible secret, but no one, especially Nick, can ever find out. One day, someone finally moves into one of the two empty houses by theirs, and Suzi, so lonely, befriends Nora, its new occupant. However, Nora is harboring her own secrets, and isn't who she really says that she is. Then there is Elle, who struggles to portray the perfect marriage and life with her husband, but has her own secrets from her past. But when Elle discovers that her husband has betrayed her, she will do whatever she has to hold onto her marriage, and to her secretive past. As the book moves on, the secrets of these three woman intertwine to provide a lot of twists and turns and a shocking ending.
"The Other Wife" is told from the three women's points of view, along with those of a few other characters in the story, which leads to a slow start, but as the book moves along the pace of the story definitely picks up. There are quite a few twists and turns along the way. While the ending seemed like a very unlikely thing to happen, I still found it to be an enjoyable book, and am looking forward to reading more from its author, Claire McGowan.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I was like yesss! It sounded really good. I wanted to like it. I really did, however the story fell flat. The story is about betrayal and revenge which is normally right up my alley. I was a little disappointed because it could have been so much more! I felt for none of the characters. Which isn’t a bad thing but it didn’t help the story. It’s not a bad read. Others may enjoy it but sadly it wasn’t for me. I give this 2 stars.
Great book. I loved the way the plot unfolded, the characters were very relatable and I connected well with them. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Claire McGowan for the advanced copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
With The Other Wife, I am back in my comfort zone when it comes to reading with a psychological thriller where a woman with a seemingly ideal life finds that things aren’t quite what they seem. I do wonder if I’ll ever get tired of this style of book but when they are good as this one by Claire McGowan, the answer is probably no.
What makes it so good? First, there’s the setting – a remote cottage outside of town in the middle of winter. You couldn’t get more remote or isolating. Then, there are the characters. I really liked them, even the one I maybe wasn’t supposed to at the beginning, the new neighbour whose motives are hard to fathom, but probably not good.
Finally, there is that sense of jeopardy and the feeling that the ground is constantly shifting under my feet as I’m reading. This book is full of twists, turns and red herrings and you can’t ask for more than that when it comes to this genre. I kept thinking I knew where McGowan was going then something happened and I changed my mind. It made the book a real page-turner, and one I highly recommend.
