This is a new series highlighting women in STEM. For those of you who have heard this term, but don't really know what it is, it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The push in our school systems is to encourage females to enter STEM courses, and eventually careers. This first book in the series highlights Temple Grandin. She is a wonderful role model for so many people. Temple has autism, but overcame that and is a renowned professor of animal science. This rather brief biography begins with her childhood and goes to her life today. It is geared to young readers so does not have a lot of text. The illustrations are simple and well done to complement the text. This is a great beginning biography, hopefully to encourage readers to do further research on this great lady. As an adult, I will definitely be reading further biographies about Temple and I think that makes this book a success. Having a grandson with autism, I will be recommending this one to my DIL, although my grandson is already a "Science Geek". AS well, this book would make a wonderful addition to all school and public libraries.

This is part of a new series of STEM Superstars. Hopefully you are aware that the STEM program is one that is in the US public schools to encourage Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. The fact that they began the series with one of the greatest human minds in recent history is amazing - Temple Grandin. You see, Grandin is profoundly autistic. Her mother never gave up hope that her child could learn, was brilliant and would be able to contribute to society and, wow, was she ever correct! Temple Grandin revolutionized the way in which modern agriculture operated. She now is a THE leading spokesperson on Autism, teaching children with Autism, and an expert on all that we now refer to as "the spectrum." As a mother of an adult son who is on the spectrum who is a leading performer with Cirque du Soleil, Temple Grandin is my hero!

Yes, as critics have pointed out, there are other books that offer more information about Temple Grandin, including her own. This book is for younger students, most likely Middle School students, who are interested in the STEM program. Hopefully it will interest students who are on the spectrum themselves and GIRLS who will be interested in the STEM program. Sadly my town's STEM program is all male - not what it was meant to be.

If you have a younger, middle school aged child or are the parent of a child who has been diagnosed on the spectrum, I highly recommend this book. If you are a teacher in these fields or a homeschool teacher, please get this STEM series in the hands of your students.

This was a great read! Temple Grandin is an inspiring individual. Having met her and worked with her myself, this book provided a great overview of Temple. This book references "Grandin" on many pages, instead of Temple. The publisher should check into this, as well as the start of sentences. Each page seems to have only one pronoun used (each sentence starting with she). I used this ARC with a group of students with autism. They each have heard of Temple before. They liked that this book had pictures, was an easy read, but was also informational.

As mentioned in previous reviews, I read the books in the STEM series with my nephew.

As someone with a family member of the autism spectrum, I was excited to see a book with Temple Grandin as the topic. I actually knew very little about her, although I've been encouraged to read her book. This was actually a great chance for me to learn about Temple, and discuss autism with my nephew.

He really enjoyed learning about her hug machine and her work with animals.

We have really enjoyed this series!

The message of perseverance and being different is really important for kids to learn about. Not everyone is the same, school is harder for some than others, and I'm sure reading / hearing about this is profound for children who feel different. The fact that she struggled early in school and didn't talk until she was 4 but went on to get a degree, invent something, run a company and speak to large groups is fantastic. What a positive and empowering story for kids to read!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'd heard of Temple Grandin but knew almost nothing about her, so this was super interesting. It's meant for smaller children so it's very basic and everything, but it's done pretty good. Even the intended audience, I feel it could of gone a little more in depth.

I was hoping, since this book was about someone with autism, it might go into that some, to explain more, but it didn't? It also called autism a "set of behavioral issues" which is.... problematic, to say the least.

So A for effort - but maybe should of been written by someone who actually knows what autism is/understands it. I only have very basic understanding of it myself, and am not completely sure how it should be described in something like this, but definitely not like that. "Behavioral issues" makes it seem like a conscious choice, which it isn't. People's brains with autism just work slightly different, arguably better. "Neurodivergence" is probably too complicated a word for a book that small children are seemingly suppose to be able to read on their own - but I know their are easier, and better then it was done here, ways to explain autism.

This book is part of a series on STEM scientists. Temple Grandin's unique gifts and talents as well as her autism are touched on in this short, easy to read biography. It is a good introduction but those who are truly interested in Ms. Grandin may want a bit more. Fortunately at the end of the book, there are suggestions for additional reads and a couple of website suggestions.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book in exchange for an honest review.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to hear Ms. Grandin speak and I have followed her story. This book is a light biography. It is a good introduction and I would have enjoyed more detail about her living with autism, as well as her brilliant inventions. That being said, I highly recommend this book for showcasing this inspiring woman.

A very basic description of Temple Grandin and her work with animals, but it's a good first book for students to read about her. The descriptions of her being lonely in school were age-appropriate. All in all, a good book for fairly early readers to introduce them to Temple Grandin and biographies.

Considering this is a series designed to introduce people who have made a mark in careers in STEM, I expected just a bit more about how Temple's unique gifts for design but I love the fact that Temple was included in this series and that it will open up discussions about the gifts and abilities of persons on the autism spectrum.
