Definitely not exactly what I was expecting as I generally enjoy sitting down and reading self help books all at once and this one had weekly exercises. Did I enjoy this book though? Yes. Just felt like it was a lot of excerpts from other books in once place though.
This could not be more perfect for right now. Mindfulness - not only for helping your child, but helping yourself too.
Working on yourself, showing your children how you fix things when you make mistakes and that it's okay to not be perfect.
There is talk about what happens in your child's brain, especially when they are acting up and how to handle your reactions by being more mindful on what you say, how you deal with the issue at hand.
This will be a book that I revisit when I need a reminder on how to control my reactions, how to be calmer and more deliberate in my actions.
I always notice a difference in how our child reacts or behaves when I stay calm, think about how to deal with the situation versus my usual loud knee jerk reactions. I am the reactive parent, my husband is the calmer one. This book is helping me to change myself to help our child be a good human.
In the end, to raise a good human, you need to make sure you are being a good human yourself!
This book will provide you with ways to calm down, ways to handle frustrations differently, and ways to communicate differently. It will provide tools to practice and use to better communicate with your children. It’s a reminder to take care of yourself with sleep and exercise. To pause and take a break at times of frustration. Hopefully you will learn ways to do things differently and even better.
I have to be honest, when I saw they wanted me to grab a notebook to track my replies, I put it down for a while, looking back I may have been intimidated! I think when you write something down, it becomes real (REALLY real) because it exists outside of those nice, but slightly out of focus, thoughts in your head. To anyone considering this book, I say: do it! Grab the notebook and this guide and take the time to think about what kind of parent YOU want to be for your child. I think we all want to raise good humans, but this book gave me the push to set intentions and think critically about my own parenting.
Being a good parent who continually looks for ways to improve my skill set, my knowledge and implement what I learn, is super important to me. This book is written almost like a workbook for parents to get into the practice of mindful parenting. It's easy to read and implement and has supported me in bring more patience and self-healing into my parenting, therefore supporting my child ten fold. Thank you!
This book focuses on the parent practicing mindfulness so that they can react to their kids with more kindness and patience. I enjoyed that there were a lot of practice items and exercises in the book, so you could actually apply ideas and techniques as you read. The book also encouraged using a journal alongside and had questions to reflect on and record your responses. I enjoyed learning about new ways to be calmer as a parent and have a better relationship and better behavior from my kiddo as a result.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
4 stars!
This books is thorough, helpful and insightful. It is a great tool for any parent regardless of your child's age.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy.
This book can be used not just for kids, but for anyone. I know this because I was able to learn a few things for myself. I am a reactive parent and learning how to be compassionate can show my kids to be compassionate as well. Changing myself, will show my kids how to truly act and hopefully they will grow to be kind individuals. There is a lot of good information in here. I think everyone should own a copy.
I was given an ARC from Netgalley in return for my honest review.
I had the joy of interviewing Hunter for my podcast and, not only was it a joy to speak with her, I was thrilled to discuss her new book, Raising Good Humans. This is a wisely written book full of personal stories and vulnerability. I’ve never been one to believe in meditation; however, taking a few minutes to begin the day with a mindfulness practice really has helped my attitude towards my children. I appreciated that she included many mindfulness practices throughout the book. Great first book and I look forward to following her work.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley..
I never thought of myself as a "parenting book" mom, honestly. But this book was fantastic. This was a great read. Check it out.
I like this book's approach to parenting, which includes mindfulness and the science of emotion and how to navigate the emotional pitfalls that exist for parents and their kids.
Raising Good Humans brings raising children into the modern era. The book explores topics applicable to the modern parent, and arms readers with strategies and techniques to become more mindful parents resulting in independent and confident kids. She tackles important topics such as mindfulness, compassion, mindful listening, and creative problem solving. She also addresses responsibility and chores as part of building a child’s independence.
I absolutely loved this book of mindful parenting and found myself nodding along with the exercises and referencing the advice throughout the week. I feel that I’m already relating to my kids in a more mindful way! Hunter will really challenge the way you look at parenting! This is one of the best parenting books I’ve read and a must read for parents.
This was the first "raising children" book that I have read and my son is 5! I loved this book and found it really inspiring and helpful. Its a lot of information of course, but many of the points have stuck with me. I feel like it has definitely helped my relationship with my son when i comes to discipline.
Highly recommend.
4.5 stars. I've practiced mindfulness with running, and I'm excited to apply this to every day life as well. Although mindfulness takes practice, it is very relaxing. I love that this book shows you how to open communication with not only your child but also others in your life. The techniques are easy to do- so simple! Why have I not been doing them?
Some of the communication techniques sounded cheesy but the reasoning behind it all makes so much sense. I realize I'll have to practice harder at some of those techniques. I also like that the book makes me realize I am not alone in how I currently parent and it's okay to screw up. A good reminder that we are all human and our little humans are watching how we handle screwing up and how we fix it. There are simple adjustments I have already implemented, and I am happy to say that I've already noticed some improvements.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
A different kind of parenting book that was more forgiving and thorough than others I have read in the past. This book focuses on the practice of mindfulness, and how increasing our awareness of what’s happening inside our body can help us be more intentional and present parents.
This book breaks down why it’s so hard to be a good parent, and what we can do to create lasting change. It also explains what’s happening inside a child’s brain that causes them to be difficult at times. Great read, especially for any parents of toddlers. After reading this, I feel more prepared to be compassionate and patient, as well as to forgive myself when I fall short of my parenting expectations.
Good parenting books are difficult to find, but this title is one of my favorites. It breaks down the science of why parents are so reactive in such a fast paced world by discussing factors such as stress and the brain. It is critical to stay calm when dealing with any situation because if we are not, our children are not. Although I have been using a similar method in my own parenting, it is comforting to know that there is additional information suggesting that this is a great way to parent. Feelings can be difficult, and building a relationship with your child will ultimately give them the trust and confidence to speak to you. I would recommend this book to parents as it has great ideas and is written in a way that parents of all education levels will be able to read and understand it.
