Gregg Hurwitz knows how to write a story that keeps you interested! This is a story that is a bit different, one that isn't the same oh murder mystery. I was not familiar with his writing but I will look up the other books Orphan X and Nowhere Man and others now and read them. This story is about a man, Evan known as Orphan X, who was wronged big time as an orphan child and molded, formed and trained to be a killing machine. Now he wants a new way of life, he wants to help others who are unable to save themselves. All in absolute secret. He learns of Max who is in desperate need of protection, someone is determined to kill him. He decides to help Max. This new mission proves different than any he has ever been involved with. This one won't end. This one will take all he's ever learned and just maybe more than he can handle. A corruption that is so deep it goes in places and a depth you would never guess. The determination and tenacity of Evan as he peels back layer upon layer of evil as he tries to save Max's life, will it cost him his? Thank you NetGalley, Minotaur Books And Gregg Hurwitz for allowing me to read this book. This is my honest opinion I hope you read this and the others! You will like them if you like this genre.
The fifth and unfortunately the last book in the Orphan X series has Evan Smoak returning to assist some new unfortunate person who needs his help. This time it's Max Merriweather, whose cousin is murdered at the beginning of the book. The usual supporting characters are back in the book and also the return of a victim who was helped in a previous book.
The action is as fast paced as the previous books and again you have to suspend belief and just enjoy the action.
Although this book does contain characters from previous books, it can be read standalone - but I would recommend starting at the beginning to enjoy it all.
Thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur books for the Advanced review copy of this book.
This is the book that we’ve been waiting for! Hurwitz has outdone himself with his latest installment in the ORPHAN X series. If you haven’t read the series yet, please do yourself a favor and start now! You won’t regret it.
Orphan X is back with a bang in Into the Fire. Gregg Hurwitz again demonstrates why his books fly off the shelf. Looking forward to more Orphan X adventures!
I look forward to these Orphan X novels and have enjoyed each one. Book five finds Evan Smoak contemplating giving up his actions as The Nowhere Man. Since the Orphan program has been completely disassembled with the deaths of so many connected to the operation, Evan has been filling his time accepting problems from people who find themselves in troubles not of their own making. In this story Grant Merriweather has left an envelope with his cousin Max saying: "If anything ever happens to me, call the number inside." Max has just learned that Grant has been killed and he has no idea how to proceed until he gets the phone number of The Nowhere Man as it is passed on by someone The Nowhere Man helped.
This story turns out to be the most involved, plot-twisting problem-solving Evan has been involved in. Each time I thought a problem had been solved up would pop another development. Author Gregg Hurwitz is very good a writing dramatic physical confrontations, but in this novel he almost wrote in too many roadblocks for Evan to navigate around. At one point I stopped reading to wonder what I would do to get Evan out of the circumstance he was facing. I finally realized I didn't have a clue! With the way this story was progressing I had started to worry that I might be reading the final book in the series. Then I got to the final page. No way can that be the end of the series so I'll just wait patiently for the next one.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for an e-galley of this novel.
This is a great book consistent with the quality of the Orphan X series. Any chance that I had to read, I was picking the book up to get to the next chapter. While not required that the books are read in series, it helps to give more depth to the characters and their history/interactions. I recommend this series and this book to anyone who will listen.
I thought Hurwitz could not top the heights of the last Orphan x novel, but this is the best yet In the series. Great characters, ingenious plot and an amazing talent to create tension and suspense. Greatly recommended!
I rated this book 5 stars, because it’s the highest rating available to me. This novel was fantastic, and had everything including cowboys and Indians, metaphorically speaking. It’s as good as anything he’s ever written, and that’s putting it mildly. What a wonderful writer, and a really exceptional book
To start: if you haven’t read any of the Orphan X series before, what are you waiting for? It’s a simply terrific series. Now, while I recommend you start from book one – just because it’s that good – I do think each book works well as a standalone and Into the Fire is no exception.
Of course, most of our favorite characters are back – but in this book Evan faces a dangerous new threat and he’s going to have to use everything he has in order to simply stay alive!
The book is action packed, but is also full of moments that kind of want to break your heart.
Highly recommended and I can’t wait until the next book!
I have followed this series from the beginning. The idea is original and well-executed. Orphan X is an interesting character. Now that he is no longer an assassin, his job as the nowhere man is no less fascinating. He meets interesting people and he is learning to interact. But,how long can he keep this a secret from his acquaintances. I hope he does so for a while as this is an awesome series.
I have read all of the previous Orphan X books and really looked forward to reading this and it didn't disappoint!
Story was brilliantly told as always, tension was ramped up to the hilt, but luckily for my heart wasn't the whole way through the book, in fact I would say this book makes Evan more human than any of the others, he even gets a dog......
There is also more personal interaction with people in his building, especially when one of them is a victim of a crime, even though Evan is helping someone else, he still finds time to sort an issue out when it hits closer to home.
I devoured this book and thoroughly and highly recommend it.
This is a well-written, action-packed story featuring the author's signature character, Evan Smoak, also known as Orphan X. I enjoyed reading the book, and enjoyed the character's ability to do impossible things with only a very few tools of the trade. This writer is very clever. Of course, he does like to load up with exotic weapons as he goes out to perform righteous violence on those despicable villains that deserve his special treatment.
To me, a high point of the book was his visit to a prison, where he performs the impossible with a cake of soap and a staple. Very clever stuff. Another high point was a scene where he is receiving texts from an evil character threatening him with dismemberment and worse, but is in the middle of a condominium association meeting discussing much more mundane issues. The juxtaposition between the banal and the deep evil struck a chord with me. I really enjoyed the touch of humor.
My criticisms of the book stem from the fact that this was the first Orphan X book I read, and I was unfamiliar with the character. The author tries to weave in the backstory quite well without overdoing it for loyal readers of the series. As a new reader to the series, I needed a little more backstory. I am still confused about some of the protagonist's quirks. The floating bed mystified me, and the character's obsession with vodka in all its forms didn't seem to have much to do with the story, but I found it to be entertaining. Orphan X is surrounded by supporting characters that provide him with incredible computer support and weapons when needed. Sometimes this was too convenient, and I appreciated it when Orphan X was left to his own resources.
I recommend this book if you are a fan of the Orphan X series. If you are new to the series as I was, I suggest starting with one of the earlier books in the series. Orphan X's quirky but interesting character traits might be better understood and appreciated with some additional explanation.
Just when you thought that nothing horrendous could happen it does. I am definitely hooked on this series. Character is forever evolving into something else, can't put book down when reading. The outcome of book will even shock you.
Freaking awesome book!

I have to say I absolutely love this book. Not only because it is one of my favorite genres, but Into the Fire is a completely unique type of story that you don’t often find.
Sometimes when you read black ops espionage type stories they are so packed with action that you can barely breathe. Your heart starts pounding and you are wound up throughout the entire book. The story is so intense you have to read it as fast as possible in case you miss something.
This book, however, had plenty of action but it wasn’t at the type of pace that almost exhausts you. All of the characters are richly enhancing to the story. Hurwitz crafts them with precise, amazing skills and knowledge beyond belief. The detail and description is beyond the typical.
The fact that Evan, the main character, works at protecting others makes the story even more special. This is no run of the mill agent, or past agent, in this case. He is a loner and you have to feel for this guy. His skills are over the top. He is a broken man.
Hurwitz seriously created a damn good story that is loaded with suspense and death defying action which will completely engross you throughout the book. The intricate research done before writing the scenes is evident. Unbelievable and shocking in places. But one you cannot stop reading.
I have never read this series before. Yes, I am sure I have missed some key points with all of the other awesome characters who brought out Evan’s dry humor, sensitivity, big heart, and dare I say, even whispers of love. Oh, I wish I had started with book one. However, I still can go back to the beginning and really get to know Evan, et al. I cannot wait!!!
Hurwitz is an author that has quickly moved to the top of my list!!
Thank you Netgallery and the publisher for this ARC.
I didn't know that this was a series and have not read the preceding books. The idea of The Orphan is interesting and something I could see really happening. I will go back to read the series from the beginning to see what I might have missed but think this book could also be read as a stand alone.
I liked the pace of the book but there were a few spots where I just wanted everything to wrap up quicker than they did.
Overall it was a good book that held my interest and I would recommend this to my friends.
If you enjoy action books, intrigue, and characters who have depth, you will enjoy this book. Evan Smoak is daring to believe that he may be able to live a “normal life” after he risks everything to help a man who has no faith in himself. This will be his last time as the “Nowhere Man”. Max finds himself being hunted by people who want to kill him. With nobody to turn to, and nowhere to run, he hears about the “Nowhere Man” who helps people in trouble. What begins as a fairly straightforward “job” Evan soon finds out things are not as simple as they seem. Filled with action, I found this book to be difficult to put down. There’s also a teaser at the end!

This is part of the Orphan X series. As a standalone it's an interesting read. I say that because I've never read the other books. Evan lives in an apartment that looks like all the other apartments from the outside. Inside there are no mementos or anything else that might tell you about the life that belongs to Evan. When Evan answers a particular phone he asks, "Do you need my help?"
Gregg Hurwitz has created a unique character who was trained to be a government asset. He can do what very few people are capable of doing. Max was given an envelope by his brother Grant. Max was to open the envelope if anything happened to Grant. And so the tale begins. Lots of unexpected twists and surprises kept me interested right up to the end.
I received an Advanced Reader's Copy from Minotaur Books. The opinions expressed are completely my own.

This was a fast paced, exciting, keep you on the edge of your seat book. Having not read this author before I wasn't sure what to expect however, I was not disappointed I would love to read more from Gregg.
Murder, assassins, adventure, all rolled into an action-packed story that kept me riveted from the first chapter to the last. I seriously could not put this down when I started reading it. I hadn't read any of the other books in this series, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this installment which holds up well on its own. This was my first time reading anything by Gregg Hurwitz and I really enjoy the way he builds his characters. I highly recommend this book and will be reading the rest of the titles in this series.
Speechless. Trying to figure out what to write for this review and all that keeps running through my head is "OMG, OMG, OMG" thanks to that ending! Hurwitz has done it again - he's written a fantastic, edge-of-your-seat thriller, and I just want to run around with copies of it, throwing it at people, forcing them to read it, because I need people to squeal with me.
As always with the Orphan X novels, the plot is fast paced, there's plenty of morally gray characters, and Evan is his amazing, bad-ass self. I love that we get lots more screen time with Joey.and I cannot wait to see how that cliffhanger ending works out.
