I can't resist a Beauty and the Beast retelling—that journey of healing and self-acceptance and love is something I could read over and over again. Amalia Howard's retelling hooked me with its premise of Lady Astrid Everleigh convincing Lord Nathaniel Harte (the titular Beast of Beswick) to marry her so that she can protect her younger sister.
I loved the way Astrid stood up for herself and fought for her sister and Nathaniel's devotion to her. Though in the second half the plot felt as though it lacked some tension and didn't captivate me in the same way as the first. Still, Howard's writing is something I'd like to read more of and I'm excited to see where she takes the series.
This may have not been a perfect fit for me, but so many of my romance reading friends adored it and I think fans of scarred heroes learning to love and retellings will find a lot to enjoy here!
The Beast of Beswick was just awesome. Front to back, beginning to end, this book rocked my world. I love Amalie Howard's stories and this newest series is no exception. This story is so so good and if you have a soft spot for Beauty and the Beast retellings I definitely think you should read this one.
Astrid has scorned the patriarchal society and now her sister is paying for it unless she does something drastic. Now she's seeking help from the Beast of Beswick, Thane, her hand in marriage to save her sister. At first, Thane thinks Astrid is kidding but she keeps coming back and now he can't get the idea out of his mind.
I loved watching Thane slowly fall for Astrid who only wanted to love someone who would respect her and love her as an equal. Astrid definitely did not put up with Thane being all self-pitying and broody and definitely spanked his butt when he was being overly grumpy, but also stood up for him when people called him ugly. I loved this story. It's the right amount of romance, story/world-building, and relationships between characters.
Beast of Beswick is a must-read!
This was a good read. I like that it was a retelling of beauty and the beast. I would recommend this to someone that wants a nice quick read.
Just a heads-up that I'm new to Historical Romance, The Beast of Beswick being my second book in this genre.
Beauty and the Beast is one of my absolute favourite stories, so to get a chance to read a modern take on this story and that too in a genre as well as an author that I am introducing myself to the first time, I jumped at the opportunity.
Now, as much as I was hoping to love this book, I just didn't. Not to say it isn't good, it is but it just wasn't enough to jump on my favourite list.
One of the things that I was looking forward to the most was the development of a connection between Thane & Astrid. What we got was a very cool version of it. The focus was more on two things and the constant repetition of those same topics again and again.
The whole basis of the book was on two situations — 1) Astrid getting her sister away from her Uncle and 2) Thane always pointing out that Astrid was too good for him.
As for the chemistry between the leads, it's there! It's right there and it could have oh so explosive! I don't mind sex scenes. I mean, who does anyway? But I've said this before and I'll say it till I'm blue in the face — don't write them for the sake of writing them. Well, unless and until it is strictly erotica. Give me a good old relationship build-up, give me the tension that is oozing and then give me the sex and only when it truly feels right and organic.
All in all, The Beast of Beswick was an okay-ish read. It's not something I can see myself raving about but I will be looking forward to more of Amalie Howard's future projects.
3 Stars!
This is Lady Astrid Everleigh and Lord Nathaniel Harte, the Duke of Weswick’s story; a standalone, happily ever after, no cheating, historical romance with lots of sizzle.
I’m a fan of Beauty and the Beast, so any time a story alludes to the fairy tale, I have to read it. Although, it is loosely based on the fairy tale, I still enjoyed the storyline. The characters are well developed, the atmosphere believable and a happy ending.
There were a few twists in the story where I was not happy with the response of the hero and heroine, otherwise a pretty good book. More of 3.5 stars.
I look forward to more from this author.
I received an electronic copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
I found this book to be a very enjoyable read with the good storyline and wonderful characters that kept me totally glued to my kindle until the very last page!
Pride and Prejudice meets Beauty and the Beast in this sexy adult romance.
I loved the story and the fact that it has a story behind the sex and tension between the two main characters. We see growth, true love, and a look at two of my favorite types of stories woven together.
I don't normally read pure romance but I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I liked this “Beauty and the Beast” retelling about Lady Astrid who needs to save her sister from a marriage to a Lord who did Amelia wrong and ruined her reputation when she was her sisters age.
Her uncle wishes the marriage to happen so she sees no other choice than to turn to the reclusive Beast of Beswick to save them and propose marriage.
Thane has excluded himself from society because of his scars. He is very moody and angry over his situation but when Lady Astrid suddenly shows up like a whirlwind and invades his life he can’t help but be intrigued by this beauty and he slowly starts opening up wishing to be the person she can fall for and save.
I really love the transformation Thane goes through and you can’t help falling for this beautiful man with a great and loving mind. He just needed an amazing stubborn loving woman to help him think differently about his life and appearance and know that he was worth the fight for a beautiful loving life.
Astrid is this woman and she doesn’t give up on him.
I was really annoyed with Astrids sister who almost ruined everything. She was really naive and stubborn.
The story was also a little to long. But the ending was great and the villains were really great villains.
I can definitely recommend this book.
I got this book from Entangled Publishing and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Beast of Beswick was a historical romance with a modern day feel. There was no old English language to get caught up in so readers could instead get lost in the fabulous story of Thane and Astrid’s romance.
Lord Nathaniel Harte has vowed to never marry and to live out the rest of his life doing as he pleases at his estate. Left scarred from his wartime service, he’s not much into appearances or what others think and would rather rely on his own devices.
Lady Astrid Everleigh may have been compromised by a scoundrel, but she’ll do anything to keep her sister from making the same mistake, including offer herself up to the Beast of Beswick as his bride to gain protection for her sister.
While neither wanted marriage, they find they may be better suited than first thought and their marriage of convenience turns into so much more.
Thane truly acts the beast when we first meet him. His physical scars cause him to hide away from society, letting no one in other than a few trusted servants and his beloved aunt. He doesn’t want a wife. Honestly, he doesn’t want anything except to be left alone. But, when Astrid shows up asking for a marriage of convenience, he can’t let her walk away.
I adored Astrid. She’s so unlike the typical lady of the time period, being strong willed, intelligent, outspoken and extremely witty. She knows her mind and doesn’t love that a woman really has no say in her own future and is willing to do anything to protect her sister. Her outspokenness is refreshing and I love that she’s willing to go after what she wants.
I truly loved the dance of this couple. Thane pushes Astrid away due to his fears and insecurities. Astrid loves Thane but is afraid to give her whole heart. Yet, they fit together and enjoy the banter and company they provide to each other. Their chemistry is off the charts. And, while a lady, Astrid is anything but a prude.
The Beast of Beswick was a gorgeous love story with smokin’ hot romance, fabulous characters and witty dialogue. 5 Stars.
Wow, what a wonderful and thrilling story this was, the characters are awesome and I really enjoyed reading this story.
Thank you, Entangled Teen, for sending me an eARC of this book. This was such a fun story and I loved the characters that I got to get to know as the story progressed. When going into a story like this -- a "bodice ripper"/historical romance, I tend to have low standards for the story, the language, the plot, and the content. This was a surprisingly delightful and had so many more threads of feminism that I really enjoyed. I think I will read the sequel because it sounds even more compelling than this one.
I eventually finished The Beast of Beswick a while ago. It was a about the middle of December, but I just couldn't get myself to write the review for the book. Don't get me wrong it wasn't a bad story. I actually loved the first half the story. The banter between Thane and Astrid was good. They kept up with one another pretty well. However, as the story progress I was fell less enchanted with these two. It was a struggle for me stay engaged with the story. I would sit there try to force myself to finish the story. I know there were others who absolutely loved the story. The story had absolutely promise. We have a bluestocking heroine with beastly hero. I don't care that Thane wasn't the standard of handsome hero. I didn't really see these two draw closer together in the story, and by the time story ended they were madly in love. They magically came together, because he realize he wanted his wife. I like Astrid, but there were times she drove me mad with her behavior with Thane.
Overall, The Beast of Beswick was an all right read. Would it be something I picked up again, probably not. The writing isn't bad, but there was something I can't put my finger on. I did like Astrid and Thane individually, and I think they would work. However, I wasn't feeling this story. I guess you can say it was a beast to read. Hey it might work for you, and you can totally ignore my words.

Great story and characters, I read it in one sitting because the story kept me hooked and entertained, all the way through the end.
4.5 stars
I enjoyed this book. Astrid is keen to protect her sister from a man who treated Astrid badly. She realises that she needs an ally who is more powerful so asks Nathanial for a marriage of convenience. It doesn't work out quite how Astrid hopes, her sister is not quite as hopeless as she realises and Nathanial takes time to tow the line.
This is a new author to me and I shall look out for the second book in this series. I think a reader will enjoy this story it has aspects of the beauty and the beast but its not laboured.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Amalie Howard is a new to me author but definitely won't be my last time reading her. The Beast of Beswick hits all my checkpoints in a historical marriage of convenience romance. Resourceful heroine? Check. Grumpy hero? check. Meddlesome friends and/or employees? Check. Steamy romance? Check and check.
This book was a lot of fun, with its flawed heroine (reputation shredded by society), and hero (body shredded by bayonets in war). Astrid and Thane’s sharp banter and lusty physical attraction were entertaining, although I did get the tiniest bit tired of the hero repeatedly edging to the cliff of falling in love, then backing off because he was “unworthy”. Thane’s Aunt Mabel made a memorable appearance, and I would really like to hear this woman’s story!

Anyone who knows me knows I love a good romance novel. The anticipation, the will-they-won't-they, and all of the warm fuzzies that go along with that really. Romance novels are my comfort reads and I can safely say that The Beast of Beswick slots in nicely with them.
This novel is inspired by Beauty and the Best, one of my favourite fairy tales. We have a duke who has been ravaged by war and a blue stocking woman, doing her best to take care of her sister. Their meetings are explosive, coloured by their personal motives and insecurities, while both of them are blind sided by (SHOCK! HORROR!) true feelings!
Thane, and Astrid are wonderfully interesting characters with big personalities. They both have opinions, neither being afraid to share them. Watching them grow together through this novel was a treat. If you want a good historical romance, with a fire cracker of a female lead then look no further than The Best of Beswick!
This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own
THE BEAST OF BESWICK by Amalie Howard is a striking beauty and the beast retelling . Thane Harte, the disagreeable Duke of Beswick is a physical and psychological war hero. Feeling hopeless, and dealing with his insecurities over his acceptance has caused him to socially isolate himself further
Two sisters are at the mercy of a scheming, money, grubbing, uncle and aunt.
After the death of parents, they have been left in the care of their Aunt and Uncle.
Who have been going through the sisters inheritance like it was there own.
The older sister, Lady Astrid Everleigh, is months away from receiving the untouchable funds which will change everything. When she turns 26, she will be in charge of her sister and the uncle cannot do a thing about it. Lady Astrid Everleigh finds herself in quite a predicament at the beginning of this novel. Although she’s a resourceful and intelligent young woman, she finds herself in a situation that only a marriage of convenience can fix. The dastardly Earl of Beaumont has designs on her younger sister and seeing her wed the earl seems like a fate worse than death.
It’s galling for Astrid to have to turn to Thane Harte, the disagreeable Duke of Beswick for help, but she is out of options and almost out of time. Lady Astrid Has no other choice marry for connivence, because until she turns 26, she will be in control of her younger sister future.
A captivating fierce feminist heroine and a beastly hero, and some tantalizing romance, makes this the perfect read.

Wow. What a terrific read. I loved it! The tone and pacing was so tight, and the characterization of both Thane and Astrid was spectacular. I honestly thought it was pretty perfect. The only thing that kind of bugged me was in the epilogue, there was this throwaway line about Astrid writing a book about what sounds like a trans character and intersectional feminism, and I don't know, it just seems a bit cavalier maybe to have this be such a throwaway.
This is my first read by this author but it will not be my last! I truly enjoyed this wonderful re-tell of The Beauty and The Beast. In this story, we have Astrid, a very strong, intelligent, sarcastic, beautiful, and funny woman who decides to ask for marriage to the Duke of Beswick, in order to save her sister from a dreadful match. I enjoyed the constant banter between Thane and Astrid. Astrid was a forward thinker, in a time where such attitude was frowned upon. She was FANTASTIC!!! Ms. Howard did an amazing job describing her character and the time period in which women., such as Astrid, were talked about. Thane was scarred very badly during the war, but Astrid NEVER saw his scars. This was the best part of the story, Astrid fell truly in love with Thane and Thane being a bit of a dense fellow could not believe his fortune that a beautiful woman loved him for him and could care less what the "ton" thought of him, especially after she was talked about after a bad situation had happened to her. A great story filled with heart, humor, warmth, hot and intense sex, and a love that surpassed the wounds within! 4.5 stars*****
P.S. Kudos on a wonderful epilogue. I freaking loved it!
