Great novella showing us the Snowden family Christmas. The twin theme mystery was great along with the additional twist. Can’t wait to read the next in this series.
Fun and fast read in a fab series features Julia Snowden returning to NYC to close up her old apartment as she has decided to stay in Maine to help run her family's clambake business and an off-season restaurant. Somehow what should have been an easy in and out became complicated with her sub-tenant suffering a bad breakup and job loss which necessitates her having to move all the contents to Maine....including her sub-tenant.
I love this series and these cast of characters and I loved this festive novel.
It's engrossing and entertaining and it kept me hooked till the end.
The plot is well crafted, the mystery is solid and the cast of character fleshed out.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Ross has created a perfect Christmas novella that will delight as well as make a reader reconsider egg nog.
Part of her Clambake mystery series, Nogged off finds Julia Snowden planning a brief return to New York City
to clean out her apartment and insure the person who took over the rental agreement is doing well.
Unfortunately, the subtenant is most definitely not doing well. Her contribution to the office party resulted in a trip to the ER along with her work cohorts as all experienced food poisoning. Ergo no job. Her plight resulted in her boy friend ignoring her. Ergo no boy friend. Faced with no job, Imogene has no income. Ergo no subtenant.
Should Julia rise to the occasion? In the spirit of the holiday, she does. She offers Imogene shelter with her family in Maine.
Ross's deft hand produces a series of comic mishaps that lend a sprightly slap stick flavor to this culinary cozy.
Of course a mystery is not complete without a body. And this person deserves to be dead. or does he? It will be up to Julia along with her beau Chris, to untangle the mess created by Imogene -- the ultimate ditz. This page turner is a delight as warm holiday traditions turn into comedy. Perfect reading for the holiday. mystery reader.
Full disclosure: I received an ARC copy from netgalley and Kensington Books in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you for this opportunity.
I enjoyed this. It was quick and fun. I loved reading about the holiday traditions.
The mystery part was interesting and kept me guessing.
This was my first visit to Busman’s Harbor, Maine and I am hooked. I have already downloaded several books from the series to my Kindle. Fingers crossed the first one can be used during this most recent round of Book Bingo.
Nogged Off takes place the week before Christmas and starts when Julia goes to NYC to get the rest of her belongings from the apartment she has sublet to Imogen. From the minute Julia enters everything she thought was planned out goes to stink.
The ride is wild and the conclusion is anything but Christmassy.
If you have questioned entering the world of the Maine Clambake series or if this is your first time hearing of the series, Nogged Off is the perfect entry. Bonus: two cookie recipes included in the novella.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
Bogged Off is a well written and entertaining book. I enjoyed the plot, setting and the quirky cast of characters. Mystery fans will love this book. My thanks to the publisher for my advance ebook. This is my unbiased review.
Nogged Inn by Barbara Ross is the 4.5 book in the Maine Clambake Mystery series, and I loved it. Julia Snowden makes a quick trip to New York, to get the remaining items in her apartment, since her lease is up. Imogene, her subletter, ends up coming home with her for Christmas. Wow what a wild story! This series just seems to get better and better with each new book. Nogged Inn is a quick, exciting, and fun mystery, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I strongly recommended this book for all cozy mystery lovers like me.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. Thank you.
As I read this copy provided by Netgalley, I kept thinking this sounds awfully familiar. It was previously published in Egg Nog Murder, which was a series of three Christmas stories I read in 2016.
I enjoy visiting Busman’s Harbor and the characters. I could see why Livvie was irked by Imogen.
I re-read it and still enjoyed it. I still dislike eggnog and Imogen’s batch of bad eggs doesn’t make me want o choke any of that libation down.
Imogen is a force to watch out for. I had forgotten the wordplay in Imogen’s name—“I’m a jinx.” She appears to live it to that description but it adds humor to the story.
This was a fast read. I had a problem putting it down once I started it.
In this Christmas themed part of the Maine Clambake series, Julia Snowden is heading to NYC to pack up the last of the personal items in her apartment before she moves permanently to Maine. When she arrives, the woman who is subletting her apartment has just quit her job and can’t take the lease over. With no other options, Julia rents a moving truck and packs up the apartment. To her surprise, Imogen—the renter—heads to Maine with her.
While she’s packing the truck, Julia spots a man sitting in a white car who appears to be watching them, but thinks no more of it once she gets on the road. When she stops LL Bean for Imogen to get warm clothes for Maine, she sees the car again. But she gets home and parks the truck and Imogen, at her mother’s house and goes to her apartment to sleep. When she wakes up, the truck and all of her belongings are gone.
When the truck is found, Imogen’s ex boyfriend is in the back—dead.
This novella is the first I have read in this series, but it is fine as a stand alone. The author gives you enough information so you’re not lost with what’s going on.
What I liked: the characters and especially, the local flavor. The “Gentleman’s Night” of shopping before Christmas. The pajama breakfast (and shopping). I can just see that happening in a small town. I like the twist at the end (not giving away any spoilers).
What I didn’t like: Honestly? It was too short! LOL. I enjoyed the story and wished it was longer.
Recommendation: If you’re reading this series, this is a must. If you haven’t, it’s a cute way to get introduced to the characters. I will be picking up more by this author in this series.
Thanks to Kensington Press and Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow. Julia and Imogen are shocked when the body of Wade, Imogen's ex, rolls out of the van they rented to bring all their stuff up to Busman's Harbor, Maine, where they are retreating to lick their wounds and re=energize. Wade, as you might expect, was not a good guy but there's a twist- he's got a twin! Talk about a mess. This novella was originally published as part of a Christmas themed collection so check to make sure you haven't already read it. If you haven't know that it's classic cozy with Julia and Imogen not only trying to solve the murder, figure out the twin thing, and find out what really happened when Imogen poisoned her work colleagues back in New York with her egg nog. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC.
Nogged Off by Barbara Ross is yet another installment in Maine Clambake Mystery featuring her well known protagonist Julia Snowden.
Julia is in New York emptying her apartment when Imogen, the girl who has been subletting her apartment has an accident when she poisons her colleagues with her eggnog.
Feeling sorry for her, especially during the holidays Julia invites her to come back home to Maine with her. Unfortunately, when they arrive at their destination they discover the body of Imogen's ex boyfriend.
Between holiday cheer there are some evil twins and many twists and turns to keep readers engaged.
This novella is slightly different from the usual series as it is mostly focused on Imogen and not Julia's family business and clambakes.
Nice and easy read suitable for the holidays.
NOGGED OFF by Barbara Ross was originally published in the cozy mystery anthology EGGNOG MURDER. I love mysteries with an interesting twist. This story is unlike any of the previous books in this series. Like many Golden Age mysteries, the focus of this book isn’t completely on the murder within it, but on the bizarre puzzles thrown into the path of the amateur sleuth. The reader is led on a series of twists and turns before finally reaching the same conclusion as the main character.
All Julia Snowden wants to do is pick up a few things from her NYC apartment and be on her way back home to Maine for Christmas. Unfortunately for Julia, nothing about this Christmas trip is simple. Her subletter, Imogen Geinkes, ingratiates herself into hitching a ride with Julia to Busman’s Harbor, Maine to bask in the hospitality of Julia’s family. The setup of this unwanted holiday guest is reminiscent of the classic film THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER – but with some murder and mayhem thrown in. Set mostly in the small town of Busman’s Harbor, Imogen brings chaos and craziness to the normally peaceful town. A mysterious stranger follows the two women into town and injects a somewhat sinister vibe. When twins are introduced, Julia and her family and friends are especially shook up and the mystery becomes even murkier than originally thought. I love the mix of holiday coziness and psychological suspense.
NOGGED OFF is a mix of holiday cheer, a harrowing investigation, and human drama. Because of Julia’s kindness to a virtual stranger, danger is brought to her family’s doorstep in a very real way. Julia’s family and friends are charming supporting characters and alleviate some of the tension in this story. I enjoyed the misdirection and intriguing clues in NOGGED OFF. I look forward to the next “Maine Clambake” mystery by Barbara Ross.
This is the first time I have read this author. I enjoyed the book . It was different for me. The characters were strong. and once you got into it , it was pretty good.
What a quick and fun holiday read. You don't have to have read the rest of the series to know what's happening. It's just a clever holiday novella. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book. I gave me Christmas joy in October.
This was a short cute story in Barbara Ross' Maine Clambake series. Julia Snowden travels to NYC to pack up the few things she wants out of her old apartment before she turns it over to the new tenant. She hits a snag when the tenant has to back out of taking the apartment. The tenant offers to help Julia move everything out of the apartment and back to Bar Harbor. Of course a mystery ensues once the arrive in the form of Julia's tenant's ex boyfriend.
I had read this story before in the anthology Egg Nog Murder. It is a quick cute Christmas story. It's perfect for a holiday read. Highly recommend.
I received this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Clever and fast paced and well balanced with the holiday theme, a great additional to the series overall.
Terrific! Fast moving for a cozy mystery. A clever story. Lots of suspense. A charming and delightful series adds another great read.
Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The Maine Clambake Mystery series is one of my favorites, so I was thrilled to discover Nogged Off, a “between the novels” story about Julia Snowden set at Christmastime. This little novella didn’t disappoint! I really enjoyed getting to meet the young lady who had sublet Julia’s apartment. A very unique introduction of a new character!
Julia is off on a short trip to New York to finish picking up the last of her things from her apartment that she is now subletting. When she arrives it soon becomes apparent that the young woman who was going to take over her apartment is no longer able too. Imogen seems to be surrounded by bad luck, she accidentally poisoned the people in her office, her boyfriend broke up with her, and now she has no where to go because she has no money. Julia feels sorry for her so after packing up the entire apartment she offers Imogen a place to stay for the holidays. Imogen except and the so are off to Maine. When it comes time to unpack the truck a body falls out and everything seems to go sideways. The body belongs to Imogens ex and the police are looking at her as the killer. Julia doesn't think the girl could hurt a fly and wants to look into the man's death in hopes that she can clear Imogen's name. Follow along as Julia delves deeper I to the life of the dead man and is surprised at all the clues that keep popping up. Can she fit all the clues together to solve the puzzle of who the killer is or will she be missing some pieces in the end? This was a fun short and a great way to follow the characters in between books.
