I've long been a fan of James Herriot. Peter Wright's stories give me the same warm feelings as the All Creatures books. As a veterinarian in Yorkshire with his patients scattered along a huge area, his tales give us true to life pictures of the countryside and it's residents, human and otherwise. Peter Wright also has a television series. This book is great for any nature lover and anyone interested in animals or veterinary.

I loved this book and as I read I felt like I was with the author on his many travels and adventures as a vet in and around Skeldale, Yorkshire. His appreciation of his beautiful surroundings is clear and his descriptions create very vivid images. He reminisces about sad as well as happier moments in his working life. It is a very heartwarming book and I would definitely recommend. Thank you to Net Galley, Peter Wright and the publisher, Mirror Books for an ARC.

Peter Wright has a way with words which means the reader feels they are right there in his world.!
The Yorkshire landscapes, the people he has met in his life and of course the animals are all beautifully described. I didn’t realise until I started reading this book that Peter had a strong affiliation with the real James Herriot !
All the stories engaged the reader. It is well written, and Peter has a lovely writing style which makes for a very enjoyable read.
I would recommend this book
Thank you to Netgalley, Mirror books and Peter Wright for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review

Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this pre-publication. I have read Peter Wright's first offering and this tour of Yorkshire is a slightly different slant focusing more on the landscape and then spotted here and there with veterinary anecdotes and tales. Would make a lovely fireside book for the dark winter months.

Fans of James Herriot books will love this one by Peter Wright. I am so happy to have received this book as an arc from Netgalley! I love the stories about Yorkshire, England in both Herriot and Peter Wright. Such personable stories in both series. I haven't read Wright's first book, it's one I'm going to have to look for in the future. But this book was just charming. I enjoyed the tales and characters, all the nuances of every day life in Yorkshire. I look forward to vising there someday, but in the meantime, I'll read these books, as they make me feel like I am there. Lovely stories!

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity for review. My review opinion is my own. I grew up with the "Herriot" books and TV shows so I was thrilled to receive this for review. This is such a charming wonderful armchair trip through Yorkshire that I highly recommend it for your reading enjoyment.

Beloved Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright takes us on a trip through the Yorkshire he loves. Peter trained under Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair- the real James Herriot and Siegried Farnon of Yorkshire. He tells us of his travels through the back country, small villages and of the people of Yorkshire that are so endearing. He writes of his younger days, reminiscences fondly and leaves you the reader with the feeling that you do know the true Yorkshire. He writes with love of the many animals he has treated and the loving kindness of the owners who welcome him into their homes to share meals and a hearty drink. He has incorporated some humorous moments as well as heartfelt experiences. He writes beautifully of the culture, the food, the terrain and the history of Yorkshire through his eyes.

I truly loved this book and felt it was as if I was transported through Yorkshire. A wonderful read.

Another charming book from TV Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright.

In this book we follow Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright on his travels, from the Great Yorkshire Show, to Whitby, Thirsk, Cannon Hall Farm (very near to me and we've had many lovely family days out there over the years), and many more.

Peter was a protégé of Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair-the real names of book and TV vets James Herriot and Siegried Farnon. He tells of some of the places, and people he's met in the course of his life. A pleasant journey through Yorkshire, favourite places, events, the characters etc. Memories of his younger days, reminiscences, heartwarming anecdotes. I loved to see some Yorkshire expressions in here. And this reader is a Yorkshirewoman herself-so of course, I simply loved all this.

Documentary style-I can imagine this working well for TV; travelling around with the author and him narrating the book with accompanying scenery. Peter Wright acts as your personal guide through Yorkshire and 'Herriot country'. Lots of interesting facts. Black and white photos are included. Also some All Creatures and Small behind the scenes stuff.

A fitting celebration of Yorkshire.

Thank you NetGalley and MirrorBooks for a digital ARC of this book.

As a Yorkshire born lass now living in the south west of the UK, who grew up watching All Creatures Great and Small and enjoys watching the Yorkshire Vet, this is a great book.

When reading this, I could almost hear Peter telling me all about the Yorkshire folk, animals and sights. Definitely a great book to gift to family and friends (and yourself) at Christmas. I will be buying a copy as a gift too.

I'm a huge fan of the Yorkshire Vet and of Peter Wight, this is his second book I read.
I was more than happy to get this ARC as it's a lovely, well written and interesting book and I couldn't help picture the places and the people while I was reading.
It was great to learn more about Mr and Mrs Green, my favorite people from the show.
I love the style of writing and the storytelling as much as I like to read about the small stories, Mr Wight/Herriot and the Yorkshire.
It was a pleasant and entertaining read, highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

What a charming man, in print as well as on the TV. The stories told were engaging and gave a real insight into the Yorkshire of today and also in the days of Alf Wight. A fabulous read.

I am an Australian who loved all the Herriot books and have travelled the area as a result. However I found this book was like an interview with someone who was unknown to me and who I never really got to know.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

We begin with an introduction to the Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, a big agricultural event that’s been ongoing for over 150 years. Mr. Wright mentioned Amanda Owen, The Yorkshire Shepherdess, who attended and was a guest speaker. I’m a fan of her books as well.

What attracted me to the book was the setting and author being a veterinarian in the Dales. Peter Wright was a Vet trainee with Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair (James Herriot and Siegfried Farnon) something I didn’t know until I started reading this book. He also has a television show! The Yorkshire Vet is a program I was unaware of until I read this book and yes, it seems I am living under a rock some days when I discover an old show.

The observations and comparisons to present day and what life was like decades ago was also very interesting to me. Fishing is a pastime our author and his brother enjoyed very much. The observation that many of the today’s youth don’t have that opportunity as they are living in cities and are so used to iPhone, Xboxes and that electronic distractions.

I found the story about finding centuries old coins fascinating. A pair of brothers were digging up a piece of their farmland, leveling it off when they discovered a broken ceramic jug and coins. It’s a great story and fabulous discovery. After these old treasures were dug up they ended up in a museum. This is after a court decision. If I am ever visiting near York’s Castle Museum I will certainly want to view the display of coins and old papers.

Much thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book. Publication date is January 17, 2020. If you enjoy reading about veterinarians, Yorkshire or loved the James Herriot stories you will like this book.

Sharing with Joy for her British Isles Friday event.

A charming book that concentrates more on people and places than on animals. Yorkshire born an bred, Wright (well known as The Yorkshire Vet) has a deep love of the country, its towns and villages, its farms unwind places. Reading the book you'll want to go visit.

I really enjoyed finding out more about Yorkshire, seen through the eyes of Yorkshire vet Peter Wright, whose mentor, eventual boss and friend was one the most famous authors and vets in our country, if not in the world, the famous James Herriot aka Alf Wight. I have visited Thirsk and been to see the James Herriot museum, once the Skeldale Veterinary Practice where Donald Sinclair (Siegfried Farnon in the ‘All Creatures Great and Small TV series) welcomed Alf Wight as a recently qualified assistant vet. On the day Alf married Joan, Siegfried made him a full partner.
Peter is a great advocate for Yorkshire. It’s been his home for his entire life, apart from his University days in Liverpool. He is a tremendous font of knowledge about the area, including not only veterinary matters, but wildlife, history, geography, Yorkshire’s famous characters, folk legends and more. His enthusiasm sparkles through this work of non-fiction as he looks at Yorkshire as he knows it and also through the eyes of tourists. He reminisces fondly about his boyhood and the immense changes that have occurred until the present day. He returns to his favourite places and describes them so well an immediate image can be ‘seen’ in your mind, bringing a smile to your face. He talks about his lifelong friends and also his newly acquired friends. He relates amusing anecdotes from his past. He takes trips out in his precious time off work to familiarise himself with them, full of nostalgia and love. He talks about incidents in his life as a trainee Vet and also of the move he initiated to the new Skeldale practice (Darrowby in the James Herriot books). He is full of compassion and makes sure to concern himself with local charities, full of concern and practical advice and help. Now famous himself, he is able to mix in high society as well as with the general public and particularly fans of ‘The Yorkshire Vet’, a Channel 5 programme regularly shown on TV. He is living his boyhood dreams and his love of Yorkshire is evident on every page. He is a skilled raconteur and socialiser, although he confesses to being nervous he hides it well.
I received this book through my membership of NetGalley and from publisher Mirror Books in return for an honest review. Thank you most sincerely for my copy. I recommend it as a lovely read for animal lovers, those who want to find out more about Yorkshire and who love to watch Peter in his role as one of the ‘Yorkshire Vets’, as seen on TV. It’s a 4.5* review from me.

As a fan of The Yorkshire Vet I throughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a variety of stories as told my head vet Peter Wright who actually worked under James Herriot . His times with a variety of animals plus their owners who are also great characters.
The ones that stick in my mind is Mr & Mrs Green. They have a heart of pure gold and an undying love for not only each other but also their animals.
A great read.
Thank you to both NetGalley and publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review

A wonderful book, part history and partly Peter reminiscing about his life in and around the lovely market town of Thirsk and the picturesque landscape.
A Wonderful description of the local people and memorable stories of his time as a vet. A fascinating read, not only for fans of the popular tv show, but for anyone who loves Yorkshire!

A fabulous book for anyone who grew up with "James Herriott", who enjoys the Yorkshire Vet, or who has a yearning for Yorkshire!
Peter Wright is the lead vet on the TV series "The Yorkshire Vet" and the way the book is written is just as if Peter is sitting opposite you having a chat. He brings the landscape, the people & the animals to life and it's fascinating to hear of his interactions with Alf Wight (the "real" James Herriott). It's quite easy to dip in & out of - you feel as though you'll meet up again with Peter tomorrow for another cup of tea & reminisce!

There are moments of sadness, and a sense of nostalgia for the way things were, but these are mixed with humour, joy & passion for his job

I absolutely adored this book! To me, this is the perfect Christmas gift to anyone who loves animals or even just enjoys observing rural society. This book has so many great stories, both happy and sad, that I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting!

As a child I was transfixed with James Herriot’s tales of life in Yorkshire before World War II, my British father’s friend’s from Yorkshire would often visit, their thick accent only adding to the mystique. I was excited to see a book about another Yorkshire vet, but how would this compare with my beloved Herriot? Very well, as it turns out, vet Peter Wright shares his love of Yorkshire, his furry patients and their owners and includes both the heartbreaking and comical stories of his life in Yorkshire.
