Love Lettering has been sitting on my Netgalley shelf for so long.. I wish I knew before how much I would enjoy reading this adventure.
This book tells the story of Meg, a famous hand letterer in New York City, and Reid, a corporate math guy whose wedding programme she made before. Looks normal, right? Not until Reid discovers the word MISTAKE hidden within the art and confronting Meg about it, asking her what she found wrong - because the wedding ended up not pushing through.
With these meet-ups, these two ended up being friends, eventually turning into more.
And then this book suddenly transformed to a story about financial conspiracies and the FBI?? I was shookt - but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. At least I got a unique romance story out of it.
Plus, the love confession and the happy ever after happened because of all of this drama. And we got a beautifully written love letter out of it!
I know to except something unique when I pick up a book by Kate Clayborn and this one definitely fits the bill! It's such an interesting idea/concept, to have a heroine who deals in scripts, drawing letters by hand, designing stationary, etc. I loved learning about Meg and how her relationship with Reid evolves. But the friendship aspect is also really important as a secondary storyline and I'm so glad Meg and Sibby were able to figure out a way forward. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a contemporary romance that thinks outside the box.
I love planning. I'm not the best at artwork, but I love to make lists in my bullet journal. I immediately loved Meg and her backstory right away because she's a true artist. She used to design beautiful wedding invitations and now designs custom planners. She's in very high demand for her design work.
At the beginning of the story, Meg is taken by surprise when a former client, Reid, comes to visit her at the shop. He wants to know how she knew his marriage wouldn't work out. Right away that had me intrigued. How did Meg know? And how did she let him know? And why is Reid finally ready to hear the truth, a year later?
Meg and Reid are total opposites, which makes for some very interesting conversations. Opposites attract is one of my favorite romance tropes. But I will say... witnessing Meg and Reid try to get to know each other is a little bit awkward. I felt very tense as they learned to talk to and be honest with each other.
But I loved them both. Meg is kind and artsy. Reid is serious and focused, but also very caring.
A fun side plot in this story is Meg trying to get over her creator's block. She has a big job that she wants to apply for, but in order to do so she has to create many different planner pages for it, kind of like an audition. I loved her adventures with Reid around the city as they work to gather inspiration for her plans.
This is my first Kate Clayborn book and I really enjoyed it. Part of the reason why I loved it so much was the characters, but it was also about a topic that really interested me: planning. I also really enjoyed the side characters, like the other women at the shop and Meg's strained relationship with her roommate.
All in all it's a really fun story with a complicated, but satisfying romance. This is my first Kate Clayborn book but I've already checked out one of her others from the library, so I can read that next.
Meg Mackworth knows her way around fonts, pens and paper. She is a well-known planner known for her hand lettering. She’s now on the verge of making herself known in the world of planners by designing her own line when Reid Sutherland, a former client, walks in to her life and asks how is that she knew his marriage was not going to work out?
Meg took some liberties with the wedding invitations and added a secret message in the lettering design. The marriage never took place but Meg feels some responsibility and wants to help Reid bounce back. The problem is that Reid has a very stressful job as a quantitative analyst and is just done with NYC and wants to move away but Meg, who is facing a bit of a creative block, devices a plan that will help her seek new designs around town and along the way she’ll show Reid what makes NYC special.
I thought for sure I was going to love this because of the focus on lettering, design and creativity but the two protagonists getting together seemed so forced. I think if you don’t know anything about design (or care to) the beginning of the book especially would be a bit hard to follow. I kept putting this book down and thinking it would get better but ultimately this probably should have been a DNF.
The story did not interest me, sadly.
I just did not like the characters or the chemistry between the characters.
Reid was sort of interesting, but not too much that it held my interest.
After a bit of a slow start, this became a book I couldn't put down. I really enjoyed the story and the slow-burn romance. Definitely looking forward to reading more by Kate Clayborn!
Utterly charming — a whimsical love story with palpable opposites attract chemistry, full of swoon inducing moments. Very much looking forward to reading more of Kate Clayborn’s books in the hopefully not-too-distant future -- I can't wait to read what she writes next!
I loved this book! It was so good I loved the characters and the story overall looks okay but it’s so pretty cool cool I love the new makeup and makeup for you and me lol I think it’s okay but I’m not gonna wear my makeup pants anymore
The novel started out strong and the characters were quiet likable, but then it fizzled out. I simply didn't enjoy the book.
Full of swoon-worthy moments! The plot had my interest with it's unusual and unique description. I listened to the audiobook and had a hard time keeping up with Meg's thoughts in the beginning, but that quickly developed into a story I couldn't walk away from or get enough of.
Meg and Reid are brought together after he discovers a secret message she thought nobody would find. The characters in this book are so cleverly written, you'll fall for them both, wishing they existed in the real world so you could befriend them.
A charming story that teaches you that everything isn't always what it appears to be, and sometimes you need to take a chance in order to find your happiness. This was a new-to-me author that I will definitely be reading again soon!
**This is a very slow burn, but I promise it's worth it.
I loved the characters and the storyline development of this book. It was absolutely one of my favorites so far and I can't wait to delve in to the next one that this author writes. The storyline was simple, enjoyable, and entertaining. The characters were complex while being completely entertaining.
This book was such a sweet read! I found the beginning started off a little slow, but once it got going, I didn’t want to put it down. This was such a unique book, and that’s what I loved most about it. I also enjoyed that it took place in NYC, it had me wishing I could go visit!
I really liked the characters in this book. You could tell right from the start they were attracted to one another. This is a slow burn romance, which I found worked well. This book is written only from Meg’s POV. I kinda wish we could’ve had some parts be from Reid’s POV as well. Overall, it’s a really great book, and I would recommend it!
Love Lettering is a cute and quirky romance book. Not too steamy, but a few steamy scenes. I loved all of the use of lettering and messages. This is a perfect spring/summer light and happy read!
HI!!! I loved this book so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have no words really. Reid and Meg are lovely and Love Lettering gave me a lot of warm fuzzies. I actually debated starting it over from the beginning when I was only halfway through. I didn’t want to get to the end. I’m kind of angry with myself that I didn’t read it sooner!!! SWOONSH!!!!!!!!
I’ve been meaning to check out Kate Clayborn for awhile since I’ve heard such great things about her and I decided Love Lettering should be my introduction to her. I had no idea what it was about other than that there were long walks, the hero was super sweet, and it took place in NYC. Just coming off of a book with a lot of action and suspense, Love Lettering was a nice change of pace. Reading it was like sitting in your favorite nook with a blanket covering you up while there’s a cup of hot chocolate waiting right next to you. It has its heart squeezing moments, but it’s comfortable and makes you feel warm and fuzzy. Love Lettering was wonderful, I loved Meg and especially Reid and their story so much, and I’m glad this was my first Kate Clayborn book — I can’t wait to read more!

Meg and Reid and very unique characters with interesting professions who are perfect for each other. Meg is a hand lettering artist and Reid is a Quant or a Quantitative Analyst. When Meg finds out Reid is about to leave NYC she feels a little guilty and thus devises a plan which will help her in turn to find her missing inspiration. They start talking long walks in the different areas of the city to find handwritten signs and play fun games.
I loved how the story progresses and is so adorable. Apart from these, there were two more reasons why I loved this book so much. It is because this book has two of my favorite things New York City and hand lettering. I love City so much and I am a big hand-lettering enthusiast. It is a therapeutic experience for me to hand letters or practice calligraphy.
I think the only thing I missed in this book was Reid’s POV. The entire book gave Meg’s perspective. It would have been nice to know what was going on in his head.
I really enjoyed this book! I need to preface the review with this statement because the predominant reviews online seem not to have appreciated it as much as I did.
It is a complete romance based book, the plot points are all redirected towards that, and any personal growth is intrinsically connected to the lead pair finding their own happily ever after. Meg is a hand-lettering expert, and she has found her own niche where she is mildly famous. Before her online presence erupted, she worked at a store and designed the small things required for weddings. Now Meg is labouring under an artistic slump, and one past mistake has resurfaced. She was unprofessional in her actions, but she repented for them and tried to behave better. This is made more difficult when the past comes back to tempt her.
I liked the background discussions of words and the styles and colours and the emotions it brings out in Meg and how that helps her bond with our piece's 'hero'. It was different from some of the other backgrounds that characters have. Their excursions to see what New York has to offer was extensive and interesting enough that I saw their relationship form that solid footing. The other scenes were a little too descriptive for my tastes but not really off-putting enough to make me not like the book. I just think any reader should know what they are getting when they pick it up.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
This book was very sweet and such a unique concept. I enjoyed the story and thought the love connection was cute but i thought it kind of went rogue at about 60% and it just made the story a bit disjointed. I know it needed a bit of conflict but I thought this was just a bit to out of left field. I still liked the story in the end but just not one that will still with me
lighthearted and charming, this book is a perfect read after a heavy fantasy book! I would definitely recommend this to fans of romance, as its not like anything ive read before
Romantic comedy is not a genre I've ever read, though I do enjoy the genre in film. I was invited to read this book by the publisher. I knew if for nothing else, I would enjoy it for its references to hand lettering and planning, as these are both hobbies that I enjoy.
From the beginning, I found myself laughing out loud at some of the hilarious analogies and streams of consciousness. I got Sex and the City vibes, but really only from the setting and the main character's quirkiness and her struggle to make her name in the big city.
I really enjoyed this book overall, even if it was completely different from what I normally read. I would love to read the author's other works.
I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books.
