What a range of emotions this book brings out, and they continue right to the last page and beyond to the epilogue.
All the while I'm reading, I kept think, but "these people are Amish", and I guess I hold them to a higher standard, but we are all human and sinners. The author's did a wonderful job of weaving a tale that made you want to shake the main character, and yet have compassion for him, and the innocent baby!
I can warn you, you will be page turning and there is never a dull moment, and there is a lot going on here, from horses to fighting, from cooking to farming, from family to friends, and those less fortunate, giving and receiving, and forgiveness.
A book that I will be recommending, it has something for everyone!
I received this book through the Publisher Waterbrook, and was not required to give a positive review.
This book is very different from the typical Amish books I've been reading .
Emotional issues are deeply touched upon and discussed after being brought to the forefront of the Amish couples marriage. These subjects are never easy for any couple to deal with but the circumstances are unusual to encounter in an Amish marriage.
I do believe the authors have done a beautiful job of handling the issues through faith, strength, scripture, forgiveness, talking it out and good old fashioned love and renewal of faith in the marriage.
I highly recommend this book for all Amish book readers and believe it will strengthen your faith.

The minute I started reading this contemporary Amish fiction, I couldn't put it down. The storyline really seemed like "real life" issues to me. No getting around the reality here. Even the highly contagious horse virus seemed very timely!!! This book was real, moving and heartbreaking. All the feels, so to speak.
I see the struggles of an Amish woman dealing with a not-so-perfect husband and her struggles and heartbreak . How will she deal with all her challenges that seem so never-ending.
I could relate to the story in so many ways. It was very good. So glad I was able to read this excellent book!
I received an ebook copy from NetGalley and Waterbrook Press. All thoughts are my own.
A story with the theme of forgiveness and adaptation at its heart, I found myself researching and wondering how much of the information about the Amish community was accurate.
An intriguing, interesting tale that made me stop and think.
This Old Order Amish novel will take many readers of Amish fiction by surprise. Many things take place in this story that are not typical of the Amish. This well crafted story will touch readers as Jemima struggles in her marriage with Roy. Many hard topics are in the center of this story - drugs, addiction, fighting and distrust along with infidelity. Forgiveness is strongly emphasized throughout. Recommended!
The Englisch Daughter by Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall is an Amish Romance book not to be missed. I love these two authors' collaborative books and this one did not disappoint. It is a great story about an excruciatingly painful situation for Jemima and Roy--one that would tear asunder many marriages. The authors have crafted strong, believable characters that evoke a range of emotions as they learn how to live with the consequences of a circumstance, learn to embrace life with honesty and vulnerability, and recognize that God's gift of forgiveness and grace can bring freedom to their lives. I received a complimentary copy of the book from Waterbrook & Mulnomah Publishers and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
The Englisch Daughter by Cindy and Erin Woodsmall is an excellent addition to their impressive catalog of Amish fiction.
Jemima Graber is an Amish wife and mother of four with a dream to start her own business. Her husband supports her dream which is unusual in Amish communities where women aren’t encouraged to work outside the home. Jemima is devastated to learn that her husband, Roy, has fathered a child with another woman and spent the life savings that was set aside for her business. Roy’s behavior is atrocious, but as an Old Order Amish wife Jemima is expected to instantly forgive and forget, still yielding to her husband as the head of the household. To further complicate matters, Jemima has to treat and love Heidi, her husband’s child, as if she is one of her own. Does she have it in her?
In The Englisch Daughter the Woodsmalls approach love and forgiveness from a unique but authentic perspective. The plot lends itself well to the theme. The characters are well-rounded, likable and believable. The Englisch Daughter is about forgiveness and true love. Love in it’s physical form. I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to all readers of Amish fiction.
My thanks to WaterBrook & Multnomah and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
Let me just say the Woodsmall women know how to write a book! The Englisch Daughter is filled with so much drama. There was no way I could not finish the book quickly. I would promise myself as soon as I finished a chapter I would take a break. If you read the book you will understand why I read it so quickly. The assumption when reading an Amish story is it will be simple and sweet. The biggest problem is should the beautiful Amish maiden be a dutiful daughter and take care of her aging parents or marry a man she feels is her last chance. The Englisch Daughter is not that book. The story involves infidelity, drugs, outspoken women, and fighting matches. Almost everyone has a cell phone and takes ubers to get around. Throw in an attempt at selling a baby to the highest bidder and you have a deeply moving story. All these things come together to give us another winner from Cindy and Erin Woodsmall. I voluntarily received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
Found this to be an interesting book. The characters have intense connections and interactions throughout as secrets come to light. Deep faith and family bonds help bring peace to all once again. Enjoyed this story very much.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book; all opinions expressed are my own.
The Englisch Daughter by Cindy Woodsmall is a wonderful story of love overcoming struggles. Roy Graber and his daughter Laura were in a buggy accident one year ago. Since then their lives have been in turmoil. His wife, Jemima, and their children stayed with her parents for a time while Roy dealt with his healing and limitations and Jemima was dealing with a difficult pregnancy. She has learned that her savings for her dream have been spent by her husband and learned he has an Englisch child. She is devastated and unwilling to trust again. Will they ever find their way back to each other?
I really liked this book; it can be hard to read at times as it deals with mental anguish and addictions. I just wanted to hug Jemima so many times. I give this book 4 of 5 stars. I felt it started a bit slow but soon makes up for it.
I received an advance copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
This is my favorite book written by Cindy Woodsmall and her daughter-in-law, Erin and I have read several. I was surprised by the emotional story and was infuriated by it at the same time. At first, I was shocked by how deceitful Roy was but more than that I truly felt so sorry for his wife Jemima and the pain he inflicted on their family.
Let's be real here, admit the Amish are flawed human beings but I don't think I have ever read a book quite like this one and hats off to Jemima for her compassion and her ability to forgive and to trust again. She is the epitome of a loving faithful wife which made me respect her decisions. There were a couple of twists that I didn't expect which added to my enjoyment of this novel.
With any good book, there is bound to be a character you don't like and some who you wind up liking much more than you anticipated. To me that is a sure sign of a well written, interesting storyline that holds you attention throughout which is why I loved The Englisch Daughter so much.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Thank you NetGalley and WaterBrook & Multanomah for the ARC!
This is a complex Amish novel told from several points of view. The story is believable and most of the characters are very likable.
This was a novel that I really enjoyed reading.
This book kept my attention and I was left wanting to know what was going to happen next. It has all aspects of a great book, especially being an Amish book. There were so many aspects to the book that apply to every couples life. Not every woman would be able to deal with what Jemima and Roy go through trying to save their marriage. I don't know many women English or Amish who could deal with raising someone else's child under those circumstances. Also Abi and her trust issues. Chris and his issues with trying to help his brother . Again this was a great read.
This was an amazing, wonderful book - filled with hope, encouragement and so many nuggets to meditate on long after i finished the book. That was the deeper level of the book - the story itself was just as intriguing, - keeping me reading when I should have been working :)
I have already recommended this book to many of my friends, talked about it with a group of other reading loving friends and encouraged people to buy it. I have always loved this author but this book is even more amazing than her others. Her writing gets better and better with each book (and they were fantastic before!) The messages in this book are so timely no matter what stage of life you're living.
Cindy Woodsmall is an author I discovered a couple of years ago & her books never fail to grab my attention. I always have a hard time putting them down once I start them. This book continued with that tradition. Woodsmall dealt with a subject not often seen in the theme of Amish literature.. Roy & Jemima have been married for several year with children & a seemingly idyllic Amish life when trouble strikes. Jemima find out that Roy has a child with another woman who is not Amish & this leads to conflict in their marriage & their family's life. Woodsmall works thru this topic with faith-filled solution & it kept me reading until I found out how the family was going to deal with this indiscretion & how their family would be impacted. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about the Amish way of life and how our faith can lead us through any kind of trouble.
*I appreciate receiving a complimentary copy of The Englisch Daughter by Cindy Woodsmall from the publisher and Net Galley. I appreciate being able to give my honest opinion of this book & understanding how faith can help us work through any problem we are presented with.
There is a reason why Cindy Woodsmall and her daughter-in-law Erin are among my top three favorite Amish authors and THE ENGLISCH DAUGHTER is a good example why. i was kind of hesitant to start it as I had just finished a page-turner romantic suspense and you know when you come off a book high... Well, this book extended the high!
I fell in love with Jem and Roy, Abi and Chris and I *had* to keep reading to see what happened next. I ignored my own work deadline and read the entire book in a day. It was that good. Now I don't want to read the next book!
The characters are realistic. the circumstances real life, and the story-telling top-notch. I *loved* this book! There's some valuable life lessons included too.
If you are looking for a great Amish book to read, grab a copy of THE ENGLISCH DAUGHTER today.
I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.
The Englisch Daughter by author Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall is one of the best books I have read in months. It is an Amish Contemporary Christian fiction that has a raw grittiness to it that makes it so difficult to put down. I was immediately invested in the story of Roy and Jemima’s marriage and family. They have suffered tragedy and are still healing.
Roy has been acting off since his buggy accident. Jemima had a difficult pregnancy and was sent to her mother’s house for bed rest. Their marriage is rocky, but Jemima wants to fix that. Does Roy? He is gone from home a lot.
Secondary characters with their subplots shine. It is easy to imagine each one. Abigail is Roy’s younger sister and helps with the family horse business. Chris comes to assist them, and soon sparks begin between the two. However, she has trust issues and he has secrets. I loved all of the conversations. Each one sounded authentic.
The depth of this story is remarkable. It is not a cute piece of fluff. My emotions ran the gamut while reading this. I felt emotional for Jemima, Roy, Abigail, and Christmas.
There are many life lessons taught in this book, not just Amish. I enjoyed the faith element that was woven throughout the entire tale. The book was was thought, organized, and written with a nice, even flow.
Believe me, this is a page turner. Once you open the book and step inside, you will want to remain with your new friends in Amish Country. I could not wait to see what happened next, but I hated for the book to end. Even if you aren’t a fan of Amish fiction, I think you will enjoy this.
At the end is a reader guide or discussion question section, a glossary of Amish words, and Acknowledgments. A book club would devour this as an offering. It is multifaceted and has so much to discuss. I highly recommend this. It definitely receives a 5 star rating. I received a copy from the publisher, but these are my own, honest thoughts.
The Englisch Daughter is an emotion-packed story of betrayal and the struggle toward forgiveness. Dealing with the issues of infidelity and addiction, it is unlike any Amish story I have ever read. The plot, impacted by mistrust, deception, broken dreams, manipulation, and misplaced loyalties, is complex with multiple story lines yet easy-to-read and follow.
The characters in this narrative are well-crafted and believable, and the surprising conclusion is satisfying. A strong faith element is present throughout the book, and the story demonstrates that in God’s hands deliberate evil becomes ultimate good. I enjoyed this read and recommend it especially for fans of Amish romance novels.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via netgalley but am under no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
With themes of forgiveness and faith, The Englisch Daughter by Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall, tests the limits of what can be forgiven within the marriage bond.
Roy and Jemima and their family have already survived the worst that could happen, or so it seems. Nearly killed in a buggy versus truck crash, Roy and oldest daughter, Laura, are still healing. Throw into the mix a troubled pregnancy that puts Jemima on bed rest while her family heals and there is a disconnect. As she returns home, she and Roy are sure they've come back stronger than before. Then, Roy begins acting strangely, disappearing overnight, glued to his cell phone, and distant with his wife. When she discovers that the money she has been saving toward her dream of a food truck is gone, Jemima is devastated. What could possibly be so important to Roy that he would throw their future away like that?
Roy is being torn apart, bit by bit. Evidence points to him as the father of a child he has no memory of making, with a woman who is not his wife. He knows he was addicted to some pretty heavy pain pills after the accident, but they never caused him to lose his memory before. For the last year, he has been paying the rent, paying for the hospital costs of the baby's birth, buying diapers, and supporting the woman and her child. Her demands for money have drained all of his savings accounts, even the one his wife and sister shared for their food truck. Just as he is ready to confess all to Jemima, Tiffany gives him the ultimatum: Pay up, or I'm selling the baby to the highest bidder who wants to adopt her. Can he save the baby, and if he does, will his marriage survive?
While the main story of the book centers around Roy and Jemima and their marriage, there is a secondary couple, Chris and Abigail, that also gets a lot of play. Chris is a new hire on Roy's horse farm. Thrown out of his Amish community for bare knuckles boxing, Chris comes to Roy under a cloud of suspicion, but his willingness to jump in during a dangerous outbreak of disease in Roy's horses goes a long way toward earning trust. Abigail is Roy's younger sister. She teaches in the Amish school and helps Roy with the horses after school. As she works with Chris, their mutual attraction lights their hearts, but Abi didn't get to be 27 and unmarried for no good reason! When she discovers Chris' "flaw", she slams the door on ever having a relationship. Can Chris get her to see that maybe she's judging him unfairly?
Cindy and Erin Woodsmall don't shy away from topics that are uncomfortable, and the Amish dictate that - no matter the offense - all must forgive is a hard one to grasp. I understood the difficulty Jemima had in forgiving her husband. He not only stole her dream of a food truck, he stole her trust in their fidelity. With four children to raise, she doesn't really have any outlets. Chris, in trying to help his brother, chose the wrong avenue - fighting - and wound up an outcast. Abigail spent years helping at her uncle's recovery house, seeing the men who came through addicted. She sees flaws in every man she has ever dated because those same flaws came through the recovery house. I liked each of the characters, even Roy was redeemable.
Readers of Amish fiction will especially enjoy The Englisch Daughter, and I think this might also fall into the women's fiction category. It's not a full-on romance, although there is romance in the story. I finished it in a day and a half once I got going. I definitely recommend!
Husband and wife, Roy and Jemima, have weathered the storm and come out stronger. Or so it would seem. After Roy recovers from a devastating accident, the two start to pull their lives back together. But as time goes on, Roy begins behaving stranger than ever. Till one day Jemima discovers that her life savings, meant to buy a food truck and start a business, has mysteriously disappeared. And that's only the tip of the giant secret Roy has been keeping from her.
Can Jemima recover from this betrayal in order to love an innocent child? And can Roy begin to unravel the mystery of what truly happened? Or will the two simply find this secret to be too much?
A long time Cindy Woodsmall fan, I was excited to read this newest novel written in partnership with Erin Woodsmall. These two have collaborated in recent years and written some incredible books. The Englisch Daughter follows the tale of a man riddled with guilt and a family fraying at the seams. At times, I wanted to scream at both Roy and Jemima, begging them to see what was happening. Raw and real, this novel takes a hard look at the work, and the rewards, of marriage. And the grit required to find, and bring out, the best in each other. An entirely different storyline than I've ever seen in Amish fiction and satisfyingly good to the very end. If you enjoy this genre, The Englisch Daughter ranks right up there with one of the best I've read.
