It was interesting to read about Amish people as I have not had any contact with any Amish people in my life. I was surprised over how modern some of the things in this book were, e.g. Ubers and mobile phones. I also was surprised by the events that take place in this book. It was definitely eye-opening in the sense that people struggle with similar problems no matter what we believe in, how we dress or live. It was interesting book for me.
I do not read Amish stories normally, but the book sounded interesting so I decided to read this book. It was truly captivating. I couldn't put it down once I started and I ended up only getting a couple of hours of sleep just to finish reading the book! This book is very well written and I look forward to reading other stories by this author.
I was deeply impressed by how Woodsmall presented this Amish/Fiction story! I have read many Amish stories by many different authors, and this is the first one that I read that presented true life issues that are faced by all humans, inside and outside of an Amish community. Most Amish stories present issues that do not represent the heart wrenching, life changing consequences that many individuals endure in life. Woodsmall took the time to develop deep characters in all of those presented in the book. Emotions and responses were real and gut wrenching at times as the reader could truly feel the pain portrayed by the different characters. I especially loved that even though forgiveness was a very important theme (by family, community, and God), responsibility for ones actions was also very much expected and portrayed as important. This book was presented in a very realistic way! I had no problem giving a 5 star rating for this book, as it truly hit everything I look for in a well written, well researched, and well edited book! I will absolutely be seeking more from this author in the future!
Actually two stories going throughout this book. The main characters are Jemima and Roy, and also their hired hand Chris and Roy's sister Abigail. A touching story of broken trust and a child that Roy thinks is his from another woman. Hard to put this down, and although heartbreaking at times, it showed the manipulation and cruelty but also showed solutions and love. Wonderful writing helps to tie it all together, and made it hard to put down. Highly recommend this book and authors.
I read a lot of the Amish fiction/romance genre. I don't think I have ever read a book that covered this subject. The subject being infidelity, in a marriage, and the result being a baby hidden until circumstances blew that right out of the water!!! This novel covers many aspects of marriage that are rarely, if ever, covered in Amish fiction. I found it to be real, thought provoking and caused me to self reflect on my own heart, concerning forgiveness. Jemima and Roy are the main characters with Chris & Abigail as the secondary story that runs along side of that of main characters. You will follow the ragged journey of Jemima and Roy as they try to get to where Jemima can just tolerate Roy. This is complicated by the fact that she now has to take care of the baby that Roy fathered with another woman.....it is as hard as anyone of us would think and explores the hurt and anger that we would have if faced with this turmoil. I would have rather had the two couples take separate books, as I think both had enough going on that it could have gone deeper, but all in all, I enjoy this novel and would highly recommend it!!
At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, this us one of the best books I have ever read in this genre. Cindy Woodsmall is a genius at understanding the motivations and heart of people. Unlike many Amish authors who paint the members of the community as on a pedestal and incapable of human foibles, she treats them as real people that make many of the same mistakes as the rest of us. The story is a journey through the aftermath of probably the worst betrayal a marriage can suffer, and how the characters work through it. Loved it. I was given a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive one.
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The Englisch Daughter tells the story of an Old Order Amish couple whose marriage is threatened by lies and deceit. Jemima knows her husband is keeping something from her, and his secrets and lies eventually unravel. This is a story of how a couple fights for their marriage against all odds.
There is a secondary story in this book of another couple, Abigail and Chris, which did not hold my attention as much, so this book gets 4 stars instead of 5.
Cindy Woodsmall is a well known author of Amish fiction, and her daughter in law joins her in writing The Englisch Daughter. I learned some things I did not know when reading this book. For example, I did not know that some Amish men are permitted to use cell phones or that the Amish are now calling for rides on Uber. Very interesting facts.
If you enjoy reading about Amish fiction and culture, you will enjoy this book. #Netgalley #TheEnglischDaughter #Amishfiction
I am not usually a super fan of Amish fiction but this one sounded intriguing. This book would have been excellent if it hadn't had a split storyline between Chris & Abigail and Jemima and Roy. If the plot would have centered on Jemima and Roy, I could have given this 5 stars but with the addition of Chri & Abigail's story, I felt as though I wanted more of Jemima and Roy.
This book is well written and the characters are described well. It has been a while since I read a book about amish families. I enjoyed reading this book.
I had to sit back and let this book sink in for a bit before writing the review. There's a misconception that the Amish don't suffer the same mistakes and trials as the Englisch world, but this book shows one possibility of that very thing....a terrible situation, stemming from bad circumstances that are made even worse, that ends up being used for good. It's more a matter of HOW they respond to things that makes them unique as a group. This book will tug at your heartstrings on so many levels, but it's definitely on my 'recommended to read' list!
