Love this quirky couple! He's a hockey god with unique ways to release stress, he bakes! She releases anxiety with factoids, I learned a ton of cool info. What was a fun night at a wedding became a happy accident with a long future. Tess is my new favorite heroine, there isn't anything she doesn't know. Cole is too organized and structured for any normal human being. But, they click and eventually work it all out. Fun, loving, hockey, a cat - all for an entertaining romantic comedy. I received an early copy, review was written unbiased and voluntarily.
So glad Avery continued the Ice Knights series! After her traumatic and distant childhood, Tess has guarded herself as an adult by being awkward and as invisible as possible. The last to be single out of her group of friends, she is starting to feel lonely and a seventh wheel to the group. At the wedding of one of her friends, she meets Cole and while she’s extremely attracted to him, she focuses on putting no attention on herself. But as fate would have it, they end up competing together against the rest of the crew in trivia, which is her specialty, and they have an epic one-night stand. And as one-night stands go, Tess ends up pregnant. With Cole thinking he’s getting back together with his ex since they have been on and off for years and his reluctance to change, he resigns himself to being involved with Tess for the baby, but still plans to get his life back on track and to normal. But after Tess has some bad luck with her living situation and the pair are somewhat forced together at his home, she inserts herself into his way of life and changes him for the better. But with both of them being resistant to change and being vulnerable, it’s a question on if they will end up happily together. I continue to love Avery’s rom-com storylines and also love that being it’s part of a series we get to see our other favorites from books past and updates on them as well. Can’t wait for the next installment in this series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I loved this book so much I could not put it down and read the entire thing in less than 24 hours. I love both the Harbor City and Hartigans series, but Avery Flynn has outdone herself with the Ice Knights!
Tess and Cole meet at a wedding rehearsal dinner in the most adorable way. After spending some time together that night things don't end well when they have an awkward morning after. Tess fully expects to never see Cole again until her pregnancy tests turn positive.
Tess has never had family who put her first or gave her any real sense of permanence. It was so heartbreaking to see how it was still affecting her actions and view on relationships. She is different and quirky without it being over the top or feeling forced into the story. Her seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of trivia was really fun even though it popped up at the most awkward moments as a sort of coping mechanism.
Cole is Mr. Routine in everything he does which can make him come across as rigid and a bit cold. Having a dual POV in this book was perfect, though, to give the reader a peek inside his head and to understand why he is how he is. Watching him grow and learn to adapt to change was entertaining. He and Tess were adorable together.
The story is not particularly angsty, but it does move between moments that made me sad for their experiences and sweet and romantic ones that put a big smile on my face.
If you are looking for a fun, funny, and romantic read with loads of interesting trivia facts, I highly recommend Awk-weird. It can be read as a standalone, but the other books set in the Harbor City/Waterbury world are great reads too!
Awk-Weird is one fine story that will make you laugh, make you hot, make you sigh, and make you happy you read it. Hockey player, Cole is stuck in a routine of sameness because his father’s job kept the family moving around and he desperately wanted roots. Florist Tess’ childhood was spent moving too...from one family member to another, never quite fitting in or feeling wanted. Both are seeking stability, but going about it in the wrong way. After a wedding hookup leaves Tess pregnant Cole and Tess have lessons to learn and adjustments to make, especially when a mess at Tess’ apartment forces her to move in with Cole. Author Avery Flynn delves into the psyche of both with humor and understanding, creating characters readers will want to cheer for...or throttle depending on the situation. This reader especially enjoyed supporting character, Khan, a feline who acts remarkably like one residing in my house. In short, this book was a joy to read and filled with many memorable moments. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book. Most highly recommend.
Tess Gardner is the girl who tries to be invisible. She is awkward, shy, quirky, and highly intelligent. She has watched all her friends fall in love and she is the lone single girl, but she has a long history of being left behind.
Cole Phillips is hot on and off the ice, but his long term on again off again relationship is now back off. He is smart, a bit rigid, and hates change. He lives a perfectly ritualistic and orderly life and he thinks it will all be the same again once his ex returns.
An alcohol-tinged wedding meet-cute has Tess and Cole to getting carried away. They do something totally out of character and then go their separate ways...until later when Tess has something to tell him. And things get even more complicated after that. Cole's carefully ordered life is about to change in more ways than one. But Tess is used to being temporary and has such insecurities and defenses up. But I loved them together.
This is a funny, sexy, and heartfelt love story with an unlikely couple that shake up each other's worlds. It is a pretty common trope but their backgrounds and quirks give it more depth. Their pasts have shaped them and affect their current decisions and thoughts. They are both forced outside their comfort zones and try to let go of their defense mechanisms. But the angst is strong with these two while the communication is not.
This was my first book by Avery Flynn and it was enjoyable and easy to follow without being familiar with the other couples, but I am sure that will just make her fans even happier to hang out with them more. They definitely had to run interference and do a few reality checks for their friends.

This was so cute! It's a surprised pregnancy with forced close accommodations as well. I loved every moment of their awkward banter. There were so many! My favorite character was probably Kahn, a feisty kitten that further forces these two characters to acknowledge their attraction. After one night with look-alike Thor (Cole), the consequences have a 9 month due date. This throws Cole's perfectly set up world into turmoil, he loves controlling his surroundings with order. The angst was real here but, this is a quick read so I didn't feel like I was being tortured. The plot moves fast with friends and new characters coming in to shake up the circumstances.
Good story with very likeable characters, Avery Flynn is a new author to me, but the story was a really felt good story with likeable characters.
***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***
Although I have other books by Avery Flynn on my TBR list, this is the first one I've read and I must say it won't be the last, because I really liked her writing!
Awk-weird is the kind of rom-com book I love and add to that the fact the hero is a hockey player and we have a winner (I love hockey players on books). The writing was good, the banter was on point, just like the humor, and everything flowed so well!
Both the hero and the heroine have had difficult pasts. Tess' past was more difficult than Cole's, but I liked that both of them had issues and they had to work through that. That made the story very relatable and real, which I always appreciate.
Tess is nerdy and funny and messy and Cole is the definition of a control-freak, so both of them together is a recipe to disaster. But then Tess is just what Cole needs in his life to bring a bit of flaire in it. And Tess thinks evything in her life is temporary, so she needs a bit of Cole's stability and order in it to make her belive that she can have a good and lasting future.
I really liked that this wasn't an insta-love kind of romance and that they had to work for it. I would have liked a bit more in the story, but I was left satisfied. What I would have added though, was a bit more of Tess' relationship with her friends, they seemed awesome, so I wanted more of them. Cole's team was super funny too.
Now I'll definitely read more books by Avery Flynn, because this one left a great impression in me!
Tess and Cole’s adventure started off a little bumpy and so not normal but who needs normal when you’re already weird! Tess and cole had many hurdles to overcome but a cute kitty named Kahn definitely sped up the process! With great team mates and fiends these two navigated their new normal and may have found a way to make it all work! If only Tess could stop feeling “temporary”
I loved seeing my faves! Nothing like a good group of characters like these! It always makes me feel like coming home when I get to read a book and all my fave people are in it!
For anyone who has felt left out, out of place, weird, different, or just awk-weird you will identify with this book!! Oh, how my heart broke everytime...EVERY single time, Tess drifted into the background, mentioned she was temporary in someone's life, that she was better off alone, etc...Avery Flynn you reached into my heart and put a big ol' squeeze on it with her character.
Awk-Weird is a romcom by all accounts, but it is also full of good touchy feely moments. Both Cole and Tess had childhoods full of upheaval, but they manifested their adulthoods in different ways. Cole is a control freak with a capital C and F while Tess is shy and doesn't people well. These two were so right for each other, it just took them a bit to figure it out in the end and the story will make you laugh and cry while getting there.
At a wedding rehearsal dinner when both of their normal defenses were down and faulty condoms were used, Cole and Tess find themselves in the role of soon to be co-parents. Now, as they prepare for this big change, baby steps are made to prep them for the big one that is about to happen in a few months. Considering neither one saw this coming in their future, they have a lot of baby steps to make to get the up to speed in their communications skills, their emotional skills, their getting along skills...etc...
Did I mention they were both a bit awkward? Make sure you add this book to your TBR now!
Awk-Weird is the second book in the Ice Knights series. It is a complete standalone though. This was my first book by the author and I didn’t feel confused at all. In fact, my favorite parts of the book were the friendships, and I know most of them have had books in another series, and I will going back to read those soon.
Awkward and weird are absolutely the best adjectives to describe this book. Tess is eccentric, socially awkward. Cole also has his own quirks, likes things need to be in order, doesn’t like change. He’s also pretty hung up on his ex girlfriend who broke up with him 7 months ago. These characters were difficult for me to relate to. They meet at a wedding rehearsal dinner, and she ends up pregnant that night. It felt super fast and we really didn’t get any details about this, so it felt even more sudden because of that. I never really fully got on board with their relationship. However, the ending was super sweet and convincing. It didn’t completely work for me, but I’m definitely in the minority about this.

I keep on saying that I don't really like "accidental baby" romances, but I keep on reading them so maybe I am a liar. Who knows! I really enjoyed Avery Flynn's other books about the Ice Knights (Tomboy and Parental Guidance), so I was excited to read this new story. You don't really need to read the other two books at all, but the hockey team is the same one. This book is more focused on Cole and Tess and the situation they have gotten into.
Tess and Cole are both two people who are very set in their ways. Tess doesn't want anyone to help her because she is so used to them abandoning her. Cole likes to be in control of everything in his life. It was sad to see them be this way, but it was really fun to watch both of them slowly start to let go of their issues. I did like the slow burn thing they had going on, but at times I just wanted to knock their heads together so they would figure it out.
I think my favorite part of the novel was Tess' kitten Kahn. Like, first the name is great! Second, he was so evil! I did love that he imprints on Cole so easily. It was so cute! I also did really like all the trivia facts too, and that was how Tess and Cole first bonded.
I was disappointed that we didn't get to really know that many details about the sexy times that resulted in the baby, but Flynn makes up for it later in the novel when these two idiots figure out they are attracted to each other. I've read her other books so I wasn't surprised by this, but I do think the illustrated cover may not convey that there are going to be some steamy scenes in this book. Be forewarned if that is not the type of romance book you like. I am partial to them, so more please.
I'm really loving this series so far, and I'm excited that there is going to be another one after this one!

Oh how I love this world that Ms. Flynn has created!
This is the awk-weird story of Tess and Cole. An awkward meeting over a trivia game, random facts spouting and a hella hot hookup.
Tess is just precious. I could sympathize with her go-to reaction of spewing out random facts. I wanted to hug her hard after reading about her past and how she was shuffled along. I too know how it is to make yourself small, to disappear into the wall to not make waves.
Cole, oh this hot mess of a man. Such a stickler for consistency, but that is his "safe" place. I did want to shake him hard about his stubbornness with Marti, I mean come on! See what is in front of you!
Tess and Cole have sparks galore, but they also have insecurities and vulnerabilities that almost wreck their relationship.
With hilarious secondary characters and a spawn of satan cat, this story is one you won't be able to put down until the very end!
AWK-WEIRD is a charming romantic-comedy, featuring a Thor-appearing hockey player and a florist. Tess is feeling a little awkward at her friend's wedding, attending alone, and trying not to be too obvious about playing an overheard trivia game when Cole, a very attractive hockey player, notices her and pulls her into the game. They get Wedding'd and end up having a very steamy night together.
When Tess later finds out she is pregnant, she knows that she wants to keep the baby, and so she lets him know, but she also makes it clear that she does not want to get married or expect anything. Especially since she knows he has a long-term frequent on-again-off-again thing with Marti (which is currently off). Tess has a lot of hang-ups about relationships and family, considering the way she was treated by her mother as a child.
Cole is someone who really resists change, and so he always assumed he would be with Marti, not out of passion but comfort. When she broke off the relationship for good, he is not sure if he can accept it. When his coach tells him he has to change up his plays or he'll never be a great player, Cole knows he needs to leave his comfort zone. When Tess becomes a bigger part of his life, he starts maybe liking the changes.
As they come together in true rom-com style, their chemistry is off-the-charts, but they will each have to deal with their own hang-ups before they can really embrace the relationship. I loved the plot and characters in this one. While at first Tess's factoids seem charming, it is easy to see why they do get annoying and make her seem "weird," and I love that this was visible to the reader and then also complimented by the relationship.
Surprise pregnancies can be pretty hit or miss in books, but this was an absolutely charming hit! I really loved seeing the two characters grow, individually and together, before they embark on the adventure of parenthood. For people who are fans of Flynn's other books, I also loved seeing the characters from the past make appearances here (e.g. Fallon and Lucy).
Highly recommend for romantic comedy fans- this is an absolutely charming new surprise-pregnancy take!
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
The title of the book is absolutely spot on. Awk-weird is adorably awkward and weird.
Awk-weird was the perfect romcom. I couldn’t stop the smile on my face the entire time I was reading this book. It’s sweet and funny with the perfect dollop of charm and captivating chemistry.
The characters are adorable! Tess is nerdy, weird and she’s my kind of girl especially with her awesome choice in sweatshirts! Even Mr.Thor-lookalike aka Mr.Ice hockey player/ Mr.Everything has a system/Mr.Neat Freak is adorable.
These two characters are the prefect example of opposites attract. They were both a shock to each others system and It honestly made for such an entertaining read.
Special Shoutout to Kahn! hahaha
This is my first Avery Flynn book and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more from her.
