Now this Is my kind of book! A great psychological thriller with a fantastic storyline. I couldn't put it down and read until I finished at 2:30 am this morning. Bleary-eyed, I just HAD to find out what happened in the end.
Loved the story of Roz, a down on her luck innocent young girl, living in Dublin who needed to escape her life and her pregnancy. So dazzled by a celebrity couple who were paying her a fortune to adopt her baby, she heads to New York to meet them. It all goes downhill from here.
I absolutely love the author's style of writing and you never really knew what was going to happen next. Literally toe-curling! I never expected the outcome so this was also a great surprise! Five stars from me!
A really good, original, fast paced thriller.
Good character formation and a gripping storyline had me hooked.
Well written, easily worthy of 3.5 stars 🌟
Rather disturbing book.. I finished it, but I did struggle at times since I hated the main characters so much... but maybe that was the point! Crazy ending as well...
Roz, unexpectedly pregnant after a one night stand, decides to find the perfect mother for her baby. She goes through an elite adoption agency and travels from her small town in Ireland to NYC to meet the prospective parents. After Roz moves into their basement apartment set up for her, she starts to realize that something isn’t quite as it seems....
Suspenseful and a bit scary, but believable and realistic, this novel keep me turning pages into the early morning hours. Roz is an endearing character who gets you on her side right away due to her good intentions for her baby. The couple she meets is so perfect they seem too good to be true, which turns out to be the truth. Great intriguing read!
This is more of a 2.5 -- rounded up because I cared enough about what happened to read to the end. I was able to overlook the profoundly unbelievable situation around Roz's unexpected pregnancy, but could not stand how she made every bad decision possible at every given turn. Why, why, why would a person waffle so frequently between common sense and obviously terrible ideas?!
(Also, it was easy to guess who the baby's father was. Bummer.)
The American dialogue needs a good cleanup. Many terms were different from what a New Yorker would say ("meant to" and "journo" for starters.) This was a distraction for me.

Thank you to @amazonpublishing and @netgalley for an advanced reading copy of The Perfect Mother by Caroline Mitchell. Roz is a poor 24-year-old barely making ends meet as a cleaning lady in Dublin, Ireland. She becomes pregnant after a one night stand and can’t fathom the idea of an abortion, so she opts for adoption. She joins a site called Miracle Moms that only uses elite adoptive families. Roz is soon contacted by an anonymous adoptive family and jets off to New York, leaving her roommate and best friend Dympna behind. Roz discovers upon landing that her clients are a very famous Hollywood acting couple, Sheridan and Daniel. She can’t believe her good luck, but all that soon changes…
I found the start and ending to be slower. The middle was great as the dynamic ramps up between Roz and Sheridan/Daniel and the reader starts to see things unravel. There are multiple elements of mystery woven throughout the two perspectives that we get the story from: Roz and Sheridan. I found the character development of Daniel and Mike to be lacking but great detail for Sheridan and Roz. The paternity of Roz’s baby is supposed to be a big twist but I had it figured out. Mitchell is good at building suspense through the middle, but it was a bit lengthy. Overall, I enjoyed it for a domestic thriller!
I thought the idea for this book was so interesting and with surrogacy and infertility being such important topics, I was looking forward to reading this. Unfortunately, i was disappointed with the cheesy dialog and the unbelievable situations. Maybe if the famous movie stars had just been a very rich couple? So much of it was just ridiculous.
Meh.
An interesting premise which could have been amazing, but simply wasn't.
Prepare yourselves for horribly cheesy dialogue and a large dose of suspension of belief.
And that's really all I have to say about that...
2.5 stars
**Many thanks to the publisher for my review copy.
Brilliant read, lots of twists and turns around a young girl who finds herself pregnant and finds a couple online who want a baby. The couple in question are a very high profile couple and aren’t who they seem at all!! Image is everything in today’s social media obsessed lifestyles. Really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it. Thank you for letting me review this book.
The Perfect Mother is everything I adore about the thriller genre. The book starts off, immediately grabbing your attention. The characters are a little crazy, but main character Roz is likeable, despite her being incredibly naive. Though Dympna is not a main character, I absolutely love her character - loyal to the core, and will do anything for her best friend. Sheridan was bat shit crazy, and I loved every minute of it! The story contained some gnarly twists and turns, and I loved seeing how it all came together in the ending. It seems like the book was well though out, and the alternating POVs between Roz, Sheridan, and Dympna was a great way of seeing the whole picture. I don't think it would have been as compelling had it only been from Roz's POV, or had it been written in 3rd person.
This book has it all. I love the precise and well-thought-out plot, the characters were all likable and fleshed out. Very intriguing plot, and kept me glued to my kindle until the last page. I highly recommend this one to loos yourself in!
I received a co-y of this from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. I always hate to give anything less than a stellar review,, but this one was unrealistic and at times bordered on ridiculous. The premise was great but it just never really got off the ground for me. It didn’t help that non of the characters were very likable, even sweet Roz who was naive and gullible to a fault. The twist at the end involving the baby was pretty over-the-tip as was the friend-to-the-end-no-matter-what Dympna...everyone needs a friend like that but considering the weird circumstances involving her family, her actions made no sense. I guess that was my problem with the book (besides the fact that it plodded along slowly)...the characters’ actions and decisions either made no sense or in the case of Roz, made you want to shake her and ask what the heck she’s thinking. All in all, this is one I would pass on.
An Irish woman decides to give her baby away to a rich couple in America who seem like such a lovely couple. Predictably it turns nasty and she has to try and get away. but who is the villain? A bit too twisty for its own sake.
Thank You Net Galley for providing me this copy of The Perfect Mother in exchange for a review! I really loved this book and was so happy to get the chance to read it. It was very fast paced and the chapters were short which I like and prefer when I read a book. It kept me wanting to read more and to find out what was going to happen to Roz. She surely was a very strong independent woman and was gonna fight for her baby no matter what and I am happy with the ending of the book.
The story is told between a few different characters but mainly Roz and Sheridan. Roz ends up being pregnant and doesnt know what to do with the baby and ends up trying to give it up for adoption on a website which she comes across a couple in New York who are looking for one. They have it all and are named as a diamond couple. Roz thinks they are the perfect candidates, but are they really? Roz ends up finding out many crazy things about these people and thinks maybe this is a bad idea.. so what now?
I won’t give any spoilers away but I wanna say I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to everyone!
A book which shows how easily a young girl without much life experience can get herself into a really dangerous situation without even realising it. It also shows how some people with money think they can buy happiness, a good publicity image, and people generally without necessarily having a pleasant personality. Shallow life meets the innocent and gullible. While I enjoyed reading this book and it had a fairly good and satisfying ending... a few things really niggled me... read it for yourself and see what you think!!
Good pacing overall, though a little repetitive at times; nice twists throughout that lead to a satisfying conclusion.
I am sorry to say this book did nothing for me at all.
The premise of the book did not seem at all possible to me although I am sure something like it probably does exist. I must have missed the psychological content I just thought that Sheradin was raving mad and trying to keep Daniel from straying . The book didn't really flow for me although I must admit I did not forced the final twist so that part was well written.
Thank you to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the ARC.
I did not see the ending coming, and I often figure out books way before I finish them. And once I got a chapter or two into the story, I couldn't put it down (I may have even whined a little about having to fix dinner or go to bed). I'd like to read more books by Caroline Mitchell.
That was one wild ride! Just when I thought I had everything figured out, this books served up twist after twist! Our main character Roz, finds herself pregnant without a job and without a partner. As a young unwed mother with a rough upbringing, Roz finds herself looking for a better life than she can provide for her baby. She’s find a wealthy couple on an adoption site who is willing for pay her a large lump sum of money for her unborn child. But, all is not what it seems... They want her baby, but Roz soon finds herself in a fight for her life. Highly recommend for lovers of domestic thrillers. Can’t wait to read more from the author.
