Roz is pregnant after a one night stand and isn't in a position to keep the baby. She finds a high class website where you can arrange for wealthy couples to adopt your baby. Roz is flown first class to New York to meet a famous couple who area interested in her baby, but when she arrives she quickly realises they won't let her leave😶
When I first started reading this book I spent about 10 mins wondering if it was going to be a little repetitive and drag, but nope, once it got going it grabbed me and made me want to keep reading until it was 12.45am and I had work the next day!
When the main character Roz finds out she is pregnant after losing her job, she is not entirely sure where to turn. In order to give her unborn child the best life she can, she searches the internet for a solution and finds a potential one through an elite adoption service. What Roz finds waiting for her in America is not what she could have foreseen and it could end up costing her more than just her baby.
I enjoyed the fast-paced writing of this book and was thrown for many twists and turns throughout that I did not foresee, typical of a good thriller. The last 20% of the book was a bit scattered, but I was overall pleased with the outcome and the book as a whole. Caroline Mitchell is an author who I will be continuing to look out for and I enjoyed The Perfect Mother as a quick thriller.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.
For awhile I thought I was reading a sequel to a very popular book called Rosemary’s Baby!
The perfect Mother had one twist after another.
I could not put the book down and finished it in 2 sittings. I would like to read more by this author.
She had a great imagination!
I found it hard to engage with any of the characters in this book. Some of them were dislikeable in the extreme, which I suppose was necessary for such a disturbing tale. It came across as a bit formulaic at times, and I’m sorry to say it did not really hold my interest. It was difficult to believe that a young woman like Roz could be so trusting and gullible, she is 24, not 17 years old.
It did however point out the dangers for anyone of any age believing that a ‘friendship’ formed over the internet from across the Atlantic (or anywhere else! ) will definitely be as genuine and trustworthy as it all appears. There are so many traps for the unwary.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of this title.
The Perfect Mother is a suspenseful read and I was fascinated with the story of Roz and her baby throughout the book. Caroline Mitchell is a gifted storyteller, and has crafted a compelling and well written tale. The chapters are presented from different character's points of view, and it was fun to be able to get into the minds of each of them. Each character was well developed ,and I learn to love Roz and George, especially, and to loathe Sheridan. I would have given the book 4 stars, but there's a little surprise at the end that I really didn't care for, and it colored my opinion of the rest of the book.
This book took me in so many different directions it was a page turner for sure! The only reason not a 5 star is in the beginning it was predictable but as it progressed I was shocked several times. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes surprises and suspense.
Fake, wealth and privilege can buy a lot, even a baby but I definitely would not have liked to be the provider of Hollywood power couple Sheridan and Daniels’s new baby.
They were the most selfish, self obsessed couple you would never want to meet. Sheridan was the epitome of mixed up evil, damaged by a childhood lived out in people’s living rooms. Anything she wanted Sheridan got, even if that came at a terrible cost to others. I found it hard to find any redeeming features, even as events unfolded and the truth unravelled, the hints of a softer side didn’t sway me.
Her husband Daniel was the one you wanted to like, the actor who exuded sex appeal, seemed softer, more caring, yet you sensed a darkness that would eventually emerge.
And what of Roz, the woman chosen to carry their longed for second child. No money, a fractured family background, pregnant from a one night stand. She was so very vulnerable, perfectly ripe for plucking out of her Ireland home to be swept off to the bright lights of New York and the promise of money and luxury.
Mitchell didn’t give her long to enjoy her good fortune before the true nature of her situation quickly emerged. She swept us along in a fast paced, ever moving narrative that explored jealousy, greed, power and influence in a social media dominated world.
You knew the only character you could trust was Roz, the others all out to protect themselves, agendas hidden until the very last moment. I couldn’t read fast enough, as I powered through, desperate to discover Roz’s fate. Would she survive her ordeal, would she discover the fate of the previous baby donor and would Sheridan and Daniel be the architects of their own downfall?
Oh how gloriously messy it was when Mitchell revealed all!
Wowee, that was fantastic! Great pacing, believable characters and a plot-line that kept you wanting to know more as the information was drip-fed to the reader and the fear factor gradually ramped higher and higher. The ending went off like a rocket and the final revelation well... I defy anyone to see that one coming! A really great read with a character you love to hate and lots of bits of the puzzle to put together. Perfect mother... perfect thriller!
So disturbing from the very outset where Roz, desperate not to be a mum but pregnant joins a website for selling your baby to an elite American couple.
Alarm bells were ringing from me from the very beginning of Roz's flirtation with the idea of delivering her child onto the arms of a relative stranger and I found myself wanting to hold her by the shoulders and scream at her to stop and run at almost every page.
Lured by the supposed platinum status of the couple who want her baby she moves to America to discover things are not quite as they seem as she sees out her pregnancy a virtual prisoner in their home.
I loved the characters in the book and the beautifully illustrated differences between small town Irish girl, trapped in a difficult situation and made American power couple determined to have what they want when they want it. really came to life.
There were plenty of twists in the plot that caught me out and kept the pages turning to complete the book in a single sitting!
Excellent read all round!
Wow. Wow. Wow... I’m blown away. Speechless. What a great story. It was everything one needs in a novel. It was crime, violence, drama, gossip, and more. I definitely recommend.
Roz is a young Irish woman who has a one night stand that results in a pregnancy. She has lost her job, isn’t prepared to be a mother and she’s afraid that if she reveals who the father is, her relationship with her best friend will be irretrievably broken. She feels her only option is to put her baby up for adoption and creates a profile on an adoption site that matches pregnant women with wealthy prospective parents. Roz chooses a couple who live in New York and are willing to support her during her pregnancy. Once she arrives in New York, her life quickly spirals out of control.
What I liked about the book: It’s generally well written, has an interesting premise, keeps up a decent pace, has some characters that you just love to hate and has a few unexpected twists.
What I didn’t like about the book: Believability was stretched a bit too much and there’s not enough differentiation in language between British characters and American characters. If an author is going to have characters from America and Britain, they need to use language and descriptive terms that fit for each of those cultures. There was too much use of British terminology with the American characters.
I did enjoy the book, but would have enjoyed it more with a bit more attention to detail.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
When Roz finds out she is pregnant, she knows in her heart that she can't be the perfect mother right now. She's in a low paying job, she's not married, and she can't tell the father. So she finds a way to make the best life for her baby... a well off couple in America that can't have any more children. But with any good thriller, we know it's too good to be true. However, when someone is desperate, they make decisions a rational person wouldn't make. You definitely have to feel for Roz as she makes her way to the U.S. and finds herself alone and scared and under the watchful of eye of Sheridan - the soon to be new mother of her baby.
Caroline Mitchell does a great job of alternating between the POV of Roz and Sheridan, as well as throwing in a little of Roz's best friend Dympna. I really enjoyed both characters, and it really helped understanding their thoughts and feelings. It will definitely leave you with the feeling that you can't believe what you "see" on the internet... not everyone is who they say they are! Another good suspenseful thriller!
The Perfect Mother by Caroline Mitchell was an insight into how desperation or ambition can encourage risky decision- making when an opportunity appears to present itself. Roz was careful to sign up to a credible agency but then her due diligence seemed to be suspended once the glamour and fame kicked in. The storyline ticks along nicely with characters taking on believable personalities and behaviours. The ending seemed a little too convenient at the eleventh hour but I certainly didn’t predict the twists. Overall a great wee story which would make a good CSI episode
I cringe when I have to write a review for a book that just didn’t do it for me. I feel bad for the author; I can appreciate all the hard work that goes into such a huge undertaking. But I remind myself (1) I promised to be honest in my reviews and (2) that’s why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. The plot is good and believable. My big turn-off is the weak lead female Roz. She is just too gullible, too slow, too trusting to be responsible for herself and her unborn baby. I never sensed the “Mama Bear” kick in, and for those of you who have been pregnant or are now mothers, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
The other characters in the book are believable and flawed, so interesting to watch. It’s still a fairly enjoyable quick read, just not for those who enjoy a strong female lead character.
(I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you to Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for making it available.)
Great book! The Perfect Mother is an atmospheric thriller with a film noir flair. Irish gal, Roz, falls pregnant after a drunken one night stand. Feeling that she’d be an inadequate mother, she signs up online to find the perfect parents for her baby. Some things are too good to be true! This novel begs a big Hollywood treatment!
Holy crap! This was intense. Roz is a vunerable young woman who finds herself in a situation that she thinks she has a way out of. Is it unconventional? Yes, Is it legal? I’m not so sure. Is it captivating to read about? Absolutely!
This was so well done. The characters were very authentic and the situation was creepy. I really enjoyed each moment that I spent reading this book and the twists did not stop. I highly recommend this read!
Wow, if you enjoy psychological thrillers, you’ll love this one! Roz, finds herself pregnant after a one night stand. She decides to register on a private adoption site, and attracts the attention of anonymous celebrity couple,
Sheridan and Daniel. She leaves Dublin for their home in New York, and enters a chamber of horrors.
This well written novel by #CarolineMitchell has all the elements of a great thriller, suspense, and page turning that kept me reading through the night. Her characters are well developed and you can’t help but embrace the young frightened Roz and despise the evil Sheridan and feel confusion regarding the complicity of Daniel.
My thanks to #NetGalley #Thomas&Mercer #Amazon for the ARC This review is my independent opinion!
I am grateful for the opportunity to have read this book. Over the course of two days, I went through myriad expressions and feelings in concern for Roz and her unborn baby. And I have to admit I was thrown for a loop! There were twists galore from the beginning to the end, and I had many a gasp and “whaaaat?!??” along the way. Truly, a page-turner. Great job!
Not read any books by this author before but really enjoyed this so another author added to my list......
The book was a roller coaster of escapism and wanting to find out more about the characters which were portrayed believably though I was trying to think which A list couple could this actually be.........
I don’t do spoiler reviews or analyse books this is a great read I’d definitely recommend it!!
Excellent book, great twist at the end that I didn't expect at all too!
Will definitely be recommending this - had me hooked from the beginning!
