Four Days of You and Me follows the story of Alex and Lulu over 4 years of high school. Each chapter focuses on a different year of their journey together - meet-ups and break-ups, heartbreak and laughter, wins and mistakes.
As a big fan of Miranda Kenneally, I was so excited to start reading her new novel! I was happy to find out that it had the spark of her other books - the characters were just as quirky and charming and the plot well-written.
I couldn't help but like Lulu - she's strong-willed and confident, creative and smart, and has her own back no matter what. Both Lulu and Alex had a lot of growing up to do as they had to find themselves before they found a way to be with each other. It's about their journey as individuals and as a part of a couple.
The book is full of many funny, sweet, and bittersweet moments. It's the perfect read for curling up on the coach on a cold weekend afternoon! If you love reading swoon-worthy romance YA novels - this one is definitely for you!
I have kindly received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire in exchange of a fair review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Miranda Kenneally is one of the few YA authors who is almost always a sure thing for me.
But even favorite authors sometimes miss the mark, and unfortunately Four Days of You and Me was one of those books for me. The pacing and the sort of chaotic back and forth of the timeline did me in. I am not a patient enough reader to be bounced around that many times while still trying to connect with the characters and care about their circumstances. Ultimately this one was a miss for me. DNF at 25%.
I signed for this because I loved Catching Jordan. I've re-read it about a couple of times over the years...
I loved the story... I know it was YA and about PG 14 so I gave it a leeway. It kinda reminded me of the lastest release by Monica Murphy... the story was told through periods of time of Lulu's and Alex's love-life... I know I'm not the author, but gosh, I wishes this was expanded more, made it a wee bit more mature and didn't leave me hanging... it left me hanging... Am I the only one who feels this way? After that last page? It frustrated me, I'm sorry... It was all going alright until the last couple of chapters and after that last page I was like, whaaaat? What happened next? There was no friggin epilogue! And I live for epilogues because I'm a sucker for definite happy endings in the books that I read....**wails** lol
This is my first Miranda Kenneally book. I felt it was good but at the same time, I felt like I was missing something. In the beginning, I found it hard to connect with the characters because it was jumping around but then I got into the flow and found it was an interesting read. It was a perfect lazy Sunday afternoon read. I finished the book in just a few short hours.
3.5/5. A cute story line I rather enjoyed. It was a bit cliche at times, but I dig the enemies to lovers element, and it was done pretty well here. I also love talented artistic protagonists—the scene where they go to meet the author was really well written and integrated. Overall was a good book, a little bit on the simple side of things but still enjoyable all the same.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book.
I love quirky, YA romance reads. This was a cute book that was fairly quick to finish. I loved Alex and Lulu, their characters were relatable. It got a bit "teenage angst" at times in the beginning, and the timeline went back and fourth, but overall a super cute book.
Sadly, I was disappointed in this book. I have loved all of Miranda Kenneally's previous books. This book was disjointed: the back and forth time jumps didn't work for me at all. It also felt like the author was trying to check off all the "woke" list items: vegan heroine (check), gay best friend (check), etc. I never felt invested in any of the characters and this author usually writes wonderful characters.
I will definitely read this author in the future, but I would not recommend this particular book.
This was such a sweet YA love story! I read it in one sitting. I liked the characters, the travel aspect, and seeing the story develop from LuLu’s freshmen year class trip to her senior year class trip. It just made me smile and reminisce some of my own high school memories. I definitely think high school girls who enjoy reading YA romance will love this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, sourcebooks fire for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
It's been a long wait for another book from this author! This was also outside of the Hundred Oaks series but stood on its own well. There were some great secondary characters so we can only hope that there will be some other books about them. The main characters in this novel, Alex and Lulu, have a deep relationship but life gets in there way many times, it's a really cute read to see if they can figure things out!
SQUEEEEEEL. Miranda Kenneally has been a must read for me since I first read Catching Jordan. Since then, I buy all of her books the day they go on sale and devour them in one sitting. I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, since it is not set at Hundred Oaks and is not a sports romance. I sat down to read it at 4pm and didn't come up for air until I had finished. It was just as good as her other books. Alex is one of those perfect book boyfriends and Lulu was the perfect mix, who I could completely relate to. I loved the details of how she came up and wrote her graphic novels and I loved that her writing was fully fleshed out in the story. I think the pace of this book was great. Just as you're starting to question what happened to get Alex and Lu to a certain place, you'd get a flashback immediately answering your question. I loved all the different locations is was set in. If you like Anna and the French Kiss, any of Miranda's other books, or authors like Morgan Matson and Emma Mills, I think you will love this one! Please write more of this series!
3.5 stars for this cute and swoony read.
Let me say this was very close to being four stars with me but there were aspects of the book I didn’t love. Let’s start with things I did love though, like the plot.
What I liked about this book, is while there are many YA romances and many YA enemy-to-lovers romances I had never read a premise like this one. The idea of life kind of centering around these class trips is so accurate to life in high school. I like how each trip was also something schools do, especially the theme park. That was honestly nostalgic for me, which I loved. The characters (while at times were cheesy) were also spot on with how high schoolers act. They had me laughing out loud frequently and tearing up a couple times. Ryan was my favorite even though his backstory seemed kind of forced. It could have been merged with the story plot better in my opinion. Another thing I loved were all the references, especially that IT reference had me rolling I was laughing so hard. It was a little dirtier than I expected out of a YA, but I’ve noticed that a lot more in the genre. Which I really like, it doesn’t idolize sex or even normalize it, I felt like it was really well written in that aspect. None of those scenes felt forced or showed sex as The Big Bad Wolf, which is what I had to read in high school YA growing up. The love story was swoon-worthy FOR SURE! Lulu and Alex made an adorable couple and a first love that I envy. Lulu was a great strong female lead that still showed the insecurity of a high school kid. Alex showed a lot of the cute athlete attributes but had the precious family side to him that was sweet. Max, oh Max I wish he was my best friend. Growing up I had a Max who I am still good friends with. He’s honesty and I LOVED his story in this book, I would happily read a book about Max and his life. The portrayal of the small town was also something relatable and honest. There’s a lot to love about Four Days of You and Me.
Now onto what I was not a fan of, there were parts of this novel that could have been either more unpacked or shouldn’t have been in it at all. For instance, when Lulu was in London, she brought up the terrorist attacks on London and New York. That’s a major issue in the world and to only briefly brush past it felt really forced. While that’s an important part of the world and the issues with world, it didn’t really need to be brought up if it was only going to be briefly mentioned. This happened with other things as well, like Ryan’s backstory. Domestic violence is also an issue, and it was briefly brushed over in this story. Ryan, while a very important character, his backstory was not incredibly important and didn’t change how I looked at him. These random spurts of over-explaining somewhat plot pointless aspects is my main reasoning for the 3.5 not 4.5 stars.
I did enjoy this book overall; it was a very classic feeling Young Adult novel. The characters are lovable, the leading man is swoony, and the leading lady is quirky and adorable. Lulu is also fierce and doesn’t change who she is for anyone WHICH I LOVE. Alex had me swooning constantly and was the sweetest most driven hottie. Four Days of You and Me, is a book I would happily recommend to any YA romance reader.
I am a huge YA romance fan, and an even bigger Miranda Kenneally fan. With that being said, this one might have been a bit much for me. The two main characters are just so angsty, I wanted to shake them right off the pages at times.
Granted, this makes their teen romance all that more realistic and believable, but it bordered on aggravating to read at times. I LOVED how the story kept flipping back and forth in time though!
"Four Days of You and Me" is a YA romance novel by Miranda Kenneally. This novel is based on the same couple, Alex and Lulu, as their relationship grows through their high school years. I felt that the romance had a little too much angst and the constant flipping between years was a bit confusing, but the book was well written overall.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Four Days of You and Me is the cute story of high school/first love and all the stages it can go through. We get to see the ups and downs of how Lu and Alex continuously come together and fall apart during those four years with each turning point being their end of the year class trip. Written in a new and somewhat unique style where we only get to read about those trips. It jumps from event to event from their freshman to sophomore to junior and then final senior trip. It's the perfect contemporary romance that I've been searching for and that Kenneally has never failed to deliver.
So I want to start with discussing the pacing of this book and the distinct way that it goes event to event. I've come across two other books that have a format like this (My Year in Love & Parties and Maybe This Time) and I strongly disliked both of them. I just couldn't get into only covering major events and missing what exactly what exactly was happening between each event. I felt like I was missing a lot, the format just wasn't working for me. Kenneally came in and kicked butt with this format. It was four major events that broke up this book, four different sections with a majority of chapters being dedicated to the field trips with some chapters that went back to turning events that happened during the year. Instead of being told about what happened during the rest of the school year, we get to read it first hand and get a bit more understanding to where Alex and Lu both are now. I think that's what finally made this format work for me. Less events, more first-hand background, and Keneally just being an amazing writer.
Lu was a hoot and a hollar. Vegan and set in her beliefs, willing to fight for what she believes in. She was never afraid to be herself though, even when others made fun of her and never pushed those beliefs on others. I also loved that she was into graphic novels and made her own. It was really cool and something that I don't see come up in books too often, what it's like to write or draw, it usually just is. Alex was the all-American popular baseball boy who comes from a hardworking family that immigrated to the US and own their own successful business. Between getting stellar grades, being a top baseball recruit and working at the family restaurant, he has a lot on his shoulders.
The romance was everything I wanted/needed. When we first meet Lu and Alex they are sweet baby freshman that are frenemies due to some slight disagreements. They're young, slightly immature and totally into each other, but being young unsure how to act on it. Through these trips we get to see all the ways their relationship grows and changes with how they mature and the new factors life throws at them every year. It was utterly realistic in the best of ways. We were there from the beginning with the will they/won't they to the end where college is now a factor added into all the other relationships challenges they've faced.
The side characters kind of made this book. Max was FABULOUS. I've always said everyone needs at least one guy friend and I'm truly jealous that Max is not mine. He was openly gay, never hiding who he was and was so supportive of Lu. In addition to Max, Lulu also had her cousin Grace who pushed her out of her comfort zone but who was her own character and had her own romantic issue going on. And finally there is Alex's best friend Ryan. He was the ultimate class clown who hid his own problems/feelings with comedy. I liked how diverse our characters are, not just in race, but in the things they were each facing. It brought even more to the story, making it more relatable because maybe you've never had issues like Lu but you can connect to what Grace or Max have gone through.
I absolutely love Kenneally's Hundred Oaks series, so when I was approved for this ARC I was super excited! Four Days of You and Me was a fun light read about Lulu and Alex and their relationship over the course of high school. The twist was we mostly only see it on the one day a year the school does a class trip. Were they perfect? Of course not. Are there some unrealistic things that happen? Of course! It's a work of fiction. If you are looking for a fun, light YA book then you should check this out! Thank you again Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
Once I started Lulu & Alex's story I had a really hard time putting it down. I loved how their relationship grew with them. And how their time apart really helped them appreciate what they had together. It reminded me of my first love and what that felt like.
I adored Lulu's friends, Max & Grace and I liked how other friends were brought into the equation as they grew up. I also loved the family dynamics and I felt that they were considerably real. My parents were very strict about my curfew like Lulu's but I also had friends who had a very lenient curfew like Alex.
I enjoyed seeing them in different travel spots like New York and London and even Six Flags. I think Kenneally did a great job of describing these places and looking at it through the lens of the characters.
The part of the book that I didn't really like was Lulu and her crafting her graphic novel and already getting picked up by a publisher at 18. I don't know how realistic that would be. I think especially in that genre that you would have to be a really talented artist to be picked up that young, just my opinion. I understand that it did give Lulu her direction as Alex had baseball.
This is a great teen romance novel. I liked it a lot!
It was a very sweet romance novel. I do enjoy the authors previous work, however this one just wasn’t for me! I do think ya romance readers will love it though!
"Four Days of You and Me' as the title indicates describes only four days but in the span of four years. It's a love story about Alex and Lulu who start out as rivals if not enemies. With time passing we meet them every year on the 7th of May when together with their class they go on a school trip. When Alex and Lulu finally realize the chemistry that connects them the relationship turns out to be an on and off one. Being still in their teens they seem to be scared of getting their hearts broken but each time when they're apart they suffer even more. It's a book about love that has to overcome fear and everyday obstacles, love that teaches us what's the most important in life. I really enjoyed the fact that it wasn't another fairy tale about love, instead we read how things actually work in real life. I also enjoyed the open ending which is exactly how life goes on. I've read it at one go.
Miranda Kenneally has wrote another great book and it was one of my favorites. I loved that it took place in 4 days with bits of the year in between. The relationship between Lulu and Alex was so adorable even with the ups and downs. Also Max was such a great addition I feel everyone needs a Max in their lives. Can't wait to read her next one.
The plot kept me interested and the characters drew me in from the start. I loved how the story was told broken down by each year in high school for Louise and Alexander.
