This was a bit different. She's the boss and he's rhe employee. He seems very beta to me yoo. For being srt in modern day England, the wording zd phrasing was different for me.
When I read the synopsis of this book I knew I had to get my hands on a copy. But oh boy I didn't expect the ride of emotions that I experienced. I am so pleased with this book. Extremely hilarious with a few sad moments. But it's definitely worth the read if you're a fan of romance. I expected a little more from the ending but apart from that this book killed it. I rate this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
This was such a good story! I read a lot of romance and most stories tend to blend together rather quickly, but this one put just enough of a new spin on old tropes that I'm not likely to mix it up with any other romance novels.
After her grandfather's funeral, Sam goes to a bar and strikes up a conversation with the hot stranger sitting next to her. Then she takes him home with her and they have a wild one-night stand, without even knowing the other person's name. The next day, Sam goes back to work at the company she founded, ready to welcome their newest employee. And in walks Ryan, the guy with whom she just spent a passionate night. Sam has been burned before and doesn't want to risk an office romance, but Ryan has got his mind set on Sam and isn't one to back down easily.
I simply loved the character and relationship development in this story. Sam and Ryan both have some insecurities as a result of things that happened in the past, and throughout the novel they both work on overcoming those insecurities. They both suffer some setbacks, mainly because they jump to conclusions about the other person, but slowly you see the trust between them grow and they learn to communicate with each other. Also, it was just very nice to see a straight workplace romance with a female boss and a male employee instead of the other way around.
There was plenty of room beside the romance aspect for some harder-hitting issues, like alcoholism and abusive relationships. These issues were handled well and in a realistic fashion, without any magical solutions that make everything all better in the blink of an eye.
Cute and easy read if you're in the mood for a romance., especially if you're into office romances. It's told from both Sam's and Ryan's POV, and, while I usually enjoy dual perspectives, this one didn't work for me. There wasn't a clear indication when there was a change in POV, so the perspectives became a bit muddled. Personally, I would have liked if we could have gotten to know both characters a bit more before the story launched into their meeting each other and having a one-night-stand. With that being said, I loved that Sam is a literal boss and runs her own company. And not only that, she is Ryan's boss...but she brings up his sexual performance in relation to her work evaluation of him, which is...kinda gross? But Ryan isn't the type of leading man I enjoy. Even when we get his POV, he's rude.
I found myself in need of a fast-paced romance and this book ticked all the right boxes. This book has good chemistry and a good set of characters, main and side. This was my first Kathryn Freeman book and it will not be the last as I really liked her style of writing.
I think the characters were really well written and I found that Sam was a really relatable and witty character that I couldn’t help but love. I did have issues with Ryan but I once I started to learn more about his character and his past I started to understand the wall he had built up around himself.
I did also find the ended quite rushed in comparison to the rest of the book. I felt that everything was just squished in and it was almost as if I had blinked and the book was suddenly over and so was the whole business plot line.
Overall, The New Guy is an entertaining read with good chemistry and characters!
Thank you to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This novel is a contemporary romance with likeable characters, good chemistry and it read at a good pace. What starts out as an out of character one night stand for Sam ends up being a messy situation when she just slept with her new employee. Office romance!
Still hunting after those swoon-worthy romance stories, I couldn’t not give this book a try after I read the description.
I liked the idea for this book and It was super easy to read, however Ryan’s character annoyed me.
He was so focussed on Sam being his boss, paying his wages and his being her underling, that it really got under my skin. So she’s your boss, get over it! Women can be in charge. There was also the sheer amount of insecurities and ego that he had that’s made every conversation feel like a battle.
Sam was easily likeable, she was smart and witty and didn’t take crap from anyway, but she was also sweet and caring and little damaged herself.
Overall an enjoyable read, even if I did want to smack Ryan most of the time.

This book had a promising start. A grumpy Gus meets a bit of sunshine in a bar. She’s lost her grandad and he’s questioning his life choices whilst being a very unfriendly prickly pear. But there is a spark. They hook up and part ways in the morning only to discover that he is her new boss.
This book just did not work for me. The leads had no chemistry. They were both trying way too hard. She to be sunshine-y and yet smart. He to be an ass because his life has sucked. I did not believe that they were irresistible to me another.
His issues from the past overwhelmed him. The work dynamics were a little off and I did not believe that they were working on an app. The constant abruptness would not have made him an easy employee to keep.
Unfortunately, none of the story worked for me. I hate giving low ratings on ARCS but in this case, there is no other choice.
Everyone seemed quite sensitive in this book, quick to over react and yet didn’t know how to talk to each other properly. The romance part of it was ok but didn’t really engage me, I found the characters a little flat, a bit like their romance.
A night stand turns into a work drama of a very awkward kind but there’s the hot undeniable attraction which they try to fight. You have the gay friend and the lifelong friend, but don’t forget the mean and nasty ex. It’s all their for your typical romance but it was just too much of the same old without anything new to be exciting.
This was a cute and entertaining story with a PG-13 level of explicitness.
Sam runs a small tech company and has a one night stand with a guy she meets in a bar. Of course, the next day she realizes he's Ryan, her new employee. Awkward!
What I liked:
--It was nice to see the woman have more financial power in the relationship
--This had a fun Silicon Valley (the show) sort of vibe - if you watch the show, you'll know that a rival developer is always lurking around with a better app. The lurker was also Sam's ex.
--This incorporated some issues (alcoholic/neglectful parent, controlling partner) in with a deft touch, not letting them take over the romance
On the other hand:
--It did feel a little long toward the end and I felt the plot relied a bit too much on Ryan taking things personally and sulking and on Sam moping about her evil ex.
But all in all, this was a fun book that was a good blend of reality and romance!
I love a good office romance and this book did not disappoint. I liked the heavy undertones within the storyline and the funny, quirky characters to lighten it up. I also liked how not every sex scene was descriptive because that can get repetitive and boring fast. Overall really enjoyed the book and now want a love story for the little receptionist who just got out of an abusive relationship.
The New Guy is the first book I've read by Kathryn Freeman.
This story is told between Ryan Black and Sam Huxton. The story is from duel point of view which is my favorite writing style. This book starts out with Sam going grieving a death and she runs into Ryan in a pub. He's a broading stranger. They end up having a one night stand without exchanging names. The next day Sam learns Ryan is their new worker at her company.
As the book goes on we learn Sam is dealing with an ex boyfriend who betrayed her and keeps showing up in the book since he runs a rival company. Ryan has a loner personality, but there is more beneath the surface. He's gone through some rough patches growing up and it comes out little by little in the book. They both struggle through the book with their own problems, but the other one is there to help.
It starts off as a secret fling because Sam doesn't want her workmates knowing what is going on. But does it stay a fling? Does it turn to more?
I enjoyed this book, but it's only getting three stars because I felt it flipped from the characters to suddenly. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with who I was reading.

The New Guy follows Sam, the CEO of a tech company and Ryan, her newest employee - which she didn't realize when she took him home from the bar the past weekend. Sam must now navigate being the boss of someone she is wildly attracted to, while her company is being threatened and Ryan may be the only person who can save it.
THIS BOOK WAS ADORABLE. I really enjoyed the interactions between Sam and Ryan, and I feel like they both brought so much baggage with them that but were able to work through it together the right way. The character development was great from start to finish, and they helped each other to become better mentally and as people. I flew through this book in just a few hours because the banter and sexual tension between the characters was just captivating!

Sam Huxton is a relationship novice and she's certainly never had a one night stand; but after the death of her beloved grandpa, she just wants to take her mind off her grief. So when she meets a good looking man brooding over a beer at a bar alone, she invites him back to her place with no strings attached. The next day, Sam discovers that her company's new app developer, Ryan Black, is the exact same guy who was in her bed the night before. They agree to keep things professional and pretend nothing happened but after spending more time together, that promise is harder to keep for both of them.
I thought this was the perfect romance leading up to Valentine's Day. The story is engaging with some funny banter - definitely a pageturner! I loved that this story has a female lead as the boss. It also touches on some serious topics such as alcohol addiction, abuse and LGBTQ issues. The only thing keeping it from a 5 stars is their lack of confidence and its effect on their relationship got too repetitive. Still worth a read!
This was a fun read but I did find it a bit predictable. Don't let that put you off though. It is still well worth a read
I really tried my best with this book but unfortunately I don't think it was for me.
My main bugbear was the main characters. I'm heavily character driven, and there wasn't anything for me to enjoy from these two.
Sam was unbearable for me, and I found Ryan rude and obnoxious.
This is the first read for me by this author. And judging by the blurb I was really excited to read it.
I don't mind workplace romance and as many romance readers, I too am still looking for my next Hating Game fix.
In this novel, we get all the good ingredients like a broody hero and an optimistic heroine. They have a one night stand together and lo and behold who walks tomorrow morning into our heroine Sam office...yeah you guessed it, our hero Ryan. And then many things happened. Many! I would say this was a very plot-driven book...
It is an okay read! I just wish I loved it more. Maybe Ryan was an asshole too much. I mean he basically tells her to ef off two times when they meet. And Sam was all over the place...as a boss bitch and as a doormat. I couldn't relate.
And when you take a bigger picture of this being workplace romance where there is this huge difference in the power dynamic, It kind of makes you uncomfortable.
Be warned this is a book with a fade to black love scenes.

The New Guy is a sweet romantic comedy that is perfect for a day by the pool. My favorite part of this novel is that the main characters are flawed, and they work together through their shortcomings to find love with each other. A great, light read!
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
Sam and Ryan definitely have chemistry, and their story is compelling because of their circumstances. Ryan works for Sam and Sam is reovering from her long time partner cheating on her. I enjoyed this story for the most part. There were moments where I was concerned because while Ryan never forced Sam to give him a chance he brought it up again and again and again even after Sam said no over and over. Ultimately he was right, but there were a few moments I really wanted him to respect her choice and for Sam to really choose him wthout prompting.
Was looking for a fun read and I found it in The New Guy. It had my attention from the very first chapter, I loved this book. The characters were fun and the story was great.
