The blurb and premise sure seemed interesting. But this just... i liked the prolouge and all, but Carita and Lucian was so incredible boring. Ruby was a little bit interesting at first, but then she fell flat.

Sealer's Game is the first book in a new fantasy romance series by Kathy Coleman. It has a taste of Greek Mythology to it's dynamics, but it is a world all it's own. Apparently there are Sealer's who are very similar to Gods with powers. Depending on whether they are dark or light, determines the dominion they rule over. About two thousand years prior to the events of the book, a Sealer, Ruby, gives birth to a baby whose father is of the dark. She then decides she must murder her child. Before she can completely kill him, his father, Lucian, comes and saves him as best he can. Being of the underworld/afterlife, the baby Zakariah only is able to exist as a spirit creature.

Skip forward the estimated two thousand years and we meet Carita who is training to become a champion for her God, Ruby. Carita competes in a duel against her closest friend Echo for the chance. After the fight, during the ceremony naming the Champion, Ruby kills Echo randomly and Carita is awarded the position. Carita then becomes Ruby's champion, which I honestly don't completely understand as she does absolutely nothing with it. From that point her duty basically becomes being Ruby's friend whilst Ruby holds a competition for men to father her a child.

Lucien is told of a prophecy that he and Ruby must have another child together that can save the world. So he unhappily enters the competition. Ruby tried to murder his son, who he loves more than anyone else in the world! Upon meeting Carita however, he becomes completely enamored with her. It creates this extremely weird love triangle that's not a love triangle. This plot was confusing, twisty, and at the same time boring. I really struggled with Carita's view point. She knew that Ruby had tried to murder her infant child and watched her kill her childhood best friend, Echo, but she acts like its cool and tries to be her friend. What?!

I am not of fan of any of the main characters in this book. Carita was an idiot and her reactions to a lot of things made no sense to me. Lucien was ok and I liked how much he loved his son, but I found him to be boring. I also never understood his attraction for Carita. When he determines he loves her, I was completely bewildered as to why he felt that way. She hadn't done anything spectacular. Ruby is absolutely horrible. I hated her which I guess it the right reaction because she is basically the villian. However, the author used her view point a lot throughout the story and tried to make her likable at times. She's a monster, so it left me in an odd state.

I am extremely interested in several side characters of the story however. Zakariah especially caught my interest. I'd like to learn more about him, as well as Lucien's two friends and Tyburn. The premise of this world is good, and I want to explore its rules and dynamics more. There is a lack in explicit scenes which is always a plus for me. The ending definitely left me needing more. I want to know what happens next!
