i really enjoyed reading this, the characters were great and I really enjoyed the mystery in the book. I did read the other two books and really enjoyed them.
Initially we're in wartime Italy with a group of 4 soldiers digging in before a battle with the Germans, with them is a young Italian deserter. Moving on rapidly we're in Texas in 1973, two of the four are dead through alcohol abuse essentially, Toll has died and the other somewhere. who knows where. Toll's daughter and her partner, Sam, are running a restaurant/diner in a small town when, after a fire, they find an old coin. They are visited by a dubious chap from Mexico, Cerides, and things hot up. They find a mysterious clue buried in a Lucky Strike tin and hinting at Wartime treasure. Sam is kidnapped then escapes or is this a sham? Smidgeon, the daughter, hares off on the trail of more clues and this got boring rather quickly. Think long drive, find clue, another long drive, another clue - yes we get that clues are always in SW corners of cemeteries buried over graves of people who died in 1970. Clues simply send her to the next cemetery and eventually more or less back to Texas. What a waste of time and fuel! She's reunited with Sam, they go into hiding because by now they've worked out who Cerides probably is and that he's a very nasty bandit. Oh and don't forget the spirits of the three dead soldiers who are still hovering around and occasionally sending flashy lights at just the right moment to save Sam/Smidgeon/whoever from death. It does all come together when the 4th soldier is brought in and Cerides gets his come uppance. It's rather a Boys' Own-ish romp and if you can get through the repetitive bits makes quite a good read. Sadly that's not enough for me but may well suit other tastes. It might be better to have read the two previous books as this one has a certain amount of referring to past deeds that don't necessarily make sense to a new reader. Thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
