Let me start off by saying that I loved this book! It was the quintessential 'lying to get what I want' story when Robert hires Adeline Blake to be his event planner. His team wants him to be governor and this is one way to do it.
Of course, you can guess, that Robert and Addie soon fall for each other and all hell breaks loose. It definitely doesn't happen as quickly as you would assume, and at times you think it's not going to happen at all but it's really exciting.
The dynamic between Robert and Adeline is unlike anything I've ever read before. It was hot, heavy, and intense! Their relationship, both friendly and romantic was very real. It didn't feel like I was reading a book, it felt like I was reading about a real relationship.
I also loved the politics part of it. It was obviously on a much smaller scale but the idea of reading about the Mayor of NYC and having him be hot & young was super cool.
The novel wasn't totally out of touch -- everything that happened could actually happen but with a little touch of something else. I thought those elements made it a really good read.
I flew through this book within a few days. It kept my attention, wasn't too cheesy and the ending made me so happy. The book, in general, made me happy so I think it's probably the perfect book for these times right now. If you need something light-hearted but with a bit of intensity,
Yours in Scandal had a little bit of everything: romance, politics, friendships, and obviously lots of scandals.
Yours In Scandal is the first book in Lauren Layne's Man of the Year series and I LOVED it. Lauren Layne is one of my favorite romance writers and she knocked this one out of the park. The story line was unique and I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. If you're looking to pick up a romance, look no further!
Another delightful contemporary romance from Lauren Layne! This one is a bit steamier than her other series I recently read (Central Park Pact) which I enjoyed - as well as the politician and his enemy's daughter storyline! All around a fun, enjoyable read. Looking forward to book 2 in this series later this year!
3.5 Stars!
I very much enjoyed this story.
It was a quick, easy read and it kept me entertained.
I loved the dynamic between Adeline and Robert. Their romance was steamy and had that opposites attract element and it was executed very well.
The story didn’t have much depth but I enjoyed anyway. Looking forward to writing more from this author.
3.5 stars
Add a hot NYC mayor and a former wild child who just happens to be the daughter of the current governor. Robert Davenport is a man with a plan. Mayor next stop Governor. So for that, he needs the perfect political image. Adeline Blake (Addie Brennan) has worked hard to change her life. An up and coming party planner, the two meet when the mayor decides to host one last function before moving on to the governor's mansion. I really like the two main characters. The two definitely had an attraction and I liked their story. But, I didn't love their story.
I received an ARC via Net Galley.
It's not a secret I love this author's writing! So happy she has a new series! This was an enjoyable read. It's a flirty, fun, fast paced and sexy read!It was a little bit predictable, but so well written with funny banter and witty dialogues to keep your interest until the end!
I cannot wait for the next read!
When I received Yours in Scandal on my Kindle , I started reading it immediately and finished it in one siting.
It was a fun romantic and quick read .
The characters were really cool and the plot " Not original " but Lauren Layne wrote it beautifully .
I gave it 3.5 , because in my opinion , it didn't live to the other fantastic books by Layne .
I wanted more details and scenes , especially between the main characters , but unfortunately it was short and needed more depth and dive in the characters emotions .
All in all , If you are searching for a quick romantic read , this one is for you .
Robert Davenport, New York City youngest mayor and recently named Sexiest Man by a magazine is facing the end of his term. Next up, Governor? He's been squeaky clean and has been set on his goal since losing his father. So the fact that he doesn't have a life outside of work shouldn't be a hindrance for his political goals, but polling indicates his single status could hold him back. Finding the perfect women for his future endeavors may prove impossible when the one he wants is potentially career suicide.
Adeline Blake has reformed her ways and is coasting under the radar now as New York’s premier event planner. Yet curiosity killed the kitty and when she's approached by Robert to organize a final party and she wants to take on the challenge even if it puts her back into the arena she left. As the estranged daughter of the current Governor getting mixed up with a politician is the last things she needs. And falling for a career politician even if Robert is so unlike the others doesn't look like a sound decision for either of them.
It pains me to give this book only 3 stars because I generally really like Lauren Layne's books, but I just couldn't get myself to like this one. Overall, it just seemed stale and stilted to me.
I was not a fan of Robert, the supposed hero of the book. I am someone who adores dark characters with multiple layers. Someone who is morally flexible or even someone who is downright criminal. However, I cannot abide a character who is sketchy and believes themselves to be the "good guy" in the story. Also, Robert felt very two dimensional to me and pretty boring. I can get over sketchy. - I cannot get over boring.
Addie was ok, but I didn't love her. She seemed immature and lacked some pretty important communication skills. She felt extremely two dimensional to me as well. And I'm tired of reading about cupcake chefs, floral boutique owners, and party planners in romance novels. It's just so dang cliche. (I could totally see this being a Hallmark movie, and that is not a compliment.)
Also, the political advice that his "experts" gave him was completely outdated. The idea that you could never win the governorship of New York if you married someone who had a checkered past is downright ridiculous. I'm not even going to get into details of the things voters are willing to overlook or forgive if you represent the politics they believe in. (Honestly, it's too depressing to do so.)
I received an ARC in exchange of my honest review.
Whenever I read a Lauren Layne book I know that I’ll get a story that will leave me feeling good at the end no matter the ups and down that happen between opening the front cover and closing the back one. Once again, she’s given us a story with interesting characters and a great plot – this time politics – that takes the reader on the adventure required to build a fun romance in what seems to be an impossible situation.
Robert is the charming Mayor of New York city and his next step is to throw his hat in the Governor’s race. With politics, as with life, we all hope to have an advantage that will get us what we want. For Robert, that advantage could come from building a relationship with Addie, the long lost daughter of the current Governor. Through this relationship he may learn some vital information. And he does…but it’s not what he thinks. What he learns is that he’s ready to allow someone into his life, that he’s been alone for too long, and that Addie is his perfect match. But, between that realization and the final outcome we have some misunderstandings, some arguments, and a whole lot of fun. Both Robert and Addie were relatable characters, the kind you might want as friends in real life.
This was a quick read with some humor, some drama, and a whole lot of romance. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters and, as always, enjoyed the happy ending. If you’re looking for a story that will have you smiling throughout and leave you feeling content and completely satisfied with the outcome, this may just be the story for you!
I love Lauren and this is a cute, fun read. I think this would be a great beach read for the summer!
Yours in Scandal is the first book in Lauren Layne's newest series, Man of the Year. It's classic Lauren Layne with a difference. It's still set in New York City (which I love), it still has main characters with fantastic chemistry and the dialogue is always on point but this time around it has both characters involved in politics! Yours in Scandal plays on the enemies to lovers/opposite attracts trope and will have us laughing and crying and trying to see how Robert and Adeline will finally get their happy ever after!
3.5 stars--YOURS IN SCANDAL is the first instalment in Lauren Layne’s contemporary, adult MAN OF THE YEAR romance series. This is twenty-eight year old, event planner Adeline Blake, and thirty-five year old, New York Mayor Robert Davenport’s story line.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Adeline and Robert) YOURS IN SCANDAL follows the building relationship between event planner Adeline Blake, and New York Mayor Robert Davenport. Robert Davenport’s second term as the mayor of New York is coming to an end and our hero wants to make a run for the Governor but his campaign chairman first wants dirt on the incumbent, and what better way than to pull skeletons from the closet, starting first with the Governor’s estranged daughter. Adeline Blake knows scandal and heart break better than anyone else, and as such, has distanced herself from her father, a man for whom she has no respect but when she is called to the Mayor’s office, our heroine is both surprised and leery when the Mayor asks Adeline to plan a party for the end of his term. What ensues is the slow building friendship and relationship between Robert and Adeline, and the potential fall-out as Adeline’s past is revealed with the intent to destroy our story line hero.
Adeline Blake was the proverbial wild child but secrets from her past destroyed all hopes for a future with her father, and in this Adeline changed directions in life, including a new identity, and no affiliation with the man she once loved. Meeting Mayor Robert Davenport sent warning flags for our story line heroine knowing the Mayor was hoping for a run for the Governor, against her father, a man she hates and despises. Robert Davenport never wanted to play dirty politics but his campaign chair insisted there was a story to tell. Thirty-five and single, Robert had never found his own happily ever after but meeting Adeline Blake gave Robert a hope for the future, a future that could very well be destroyed if Adeline discovered the truth behind their original meeting.
The relationship between Adeline and Robert begins as a business arrangement albeit a business arrangement meant for underhanded purposes. As the date for the party nears Robert finds himself wanting something more from our story line heroine but something more could mean disaster when the truth is revealed. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate and intense.
We are introduced to Robert’s campaign chair Martin, and his chief of staff, thirty-seven year old Kenny Lamb; PA Darlene, as well as Adeline’s friends Rosalie and Jane Kim.
YOURS IN SCANDAL is a cute but predictable story line; a sexy and easy read with a playful hero, and reluctant heroine. The premise is interesting and entertaining; the characters are tenacious; the romance is energetic and encouraging.

I describe Lauren Layne novels as ‘easy, breezy, beautiful romance books’ and this one fits right in. Attractive, hardworking man and gorgeous, driven woman falling in love on the streets of New York is the perfect escape read for me, especially these days.
I really enjoyed Robert and Adeline’s story; I’m a sucker for politics, so I was happy for a little taste. I feel like I just wanted a little bit MORE - more interactions with her dad, more emotion, more something. It felt a little rushed toward the end.
But overall, this was a light, fun read and I would recommend if you are looking for a quick romance.
A very fun, sexy, action packed journey filled with engaging charters, witty dialog, heart racing twists and fun exciting turns. Was a great read from beginning to end with laugh out loud moments and heartwarming turns. Really enjoyed this emotionally thrilling adventure!
This was a really enjoyable read! I connected with the characters and was rooting for them to get together. And there wasn’t an over abundance of politics, instead we spent more time getting to know the characters, which I’m glad for. I’m definitely interested in reading more from this author in the future!
**I was graciously provided an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**
This one was a quick, funny and heartfelt story. It was a kinda book that will put a smile on your face and leave you feeling simply happy.
I loved the relationship between Robert and Adeline. I loved how she was trying very hard not to be in the spotlight again. And it was really hard not to fall for his charms. The transition from enemies to lovers was effortless and made me a believer that true love can conquer all.
I'm excited to see what happens next in this series because the beginning was fantastic.

Forget reformed rakes and playboys. Lauren Layne brings us something new and fresh in the romance genre: the reformed party girl! And I am 100% here for it!! Truth be told, I was a bit nervous to read Yours In Scandal because 1) I came across mixed reviews and 2) I wasn't sure if a reformed party girl would be for me. But then I told myself if past me was able to read 4829293 books about reformed rakes, then present me can most definitely read a book with a reformed party girl as the heroine. For once, I'm glad I listened to myself.
Robert Davenport is New York City's youngest and hottest mayor. With his term as mayor coming to an end, Robert's campaign manager urges him to compete for governor. And according to his campaign manager, the best way to do that is to hire Adeline Blake, the governor's daughter — former party girl turned event planner — to organize his final event as mayor. Here's the thing: if you don't like secrets as a source of conflict and if you don't like politcs to cross swords with romance, then I'm not sure if this is your book. That being said, I do have a couple of things to say about both of these things. Let's begin with the secrets. Honestly, I didn't mind it in this case. I think the author did a good job writing that conflict and it actually worked really well with this type of romance. I am rarely okay with secrets being a source of conflict in books, but sometimes it works! And it worked here!
Onto politics. The hero and heroine's jobs are not super detailed — we do go through certain steps with them (i.e. event planning), but the focus is mostly on the romance. And I was more than okay with that! At the same time, the author kind of makes politics...simple? When in reality, it's so complex. I don't mind though because I only care about the romance. The politics portrayed in this book is neutral, in case some of you are worried about biased politics. There are no specific parties mentioned and Robert's work as a mayor is described well, but it is also vague enough that his political leaning is indeterminate, which I know will be a huge sigh of relief for many readers.
I honestly thought this book was going to be EXTRA dramatic, but it ended up being quite low key in the drama arena because both Robert and Adeline are reasonable and rational people. And that's exactly why I liked the book! I think I would have liked it less if there was too much drama. I do have one unresolved issue though. At one point, Adeline hinted at her private photos being shared by her ex-boyfriends without her consent. I think she even hinted that she was unknowingly offered drinks with drugs in them in her past as a party girl. I'm not sure if I maybe misread that part or if this is something that the author just didn't expand on. If it is indeed the latter, then it's a missed opportunity.
P.S. I'm happy to see more diversity in Layne's books, especially considering that they're based in New York City.
Wow, what a great book! I really love this author, and this book met every expectation I had when I signed up to read it. Loved Addie and Robert together, disliked Martin to no end and Kenny, Rosalie and Jane were great support characters. Robert is this very lovable character, Mayor of New York, tall, dark and gook looking and is working to uphold the standards of his late father, and for the past 8 years has done just that as one of the best mayors New York has had, his aspirations to become Governor are certain because of his clean track record, that’s until he meets Adaline Blake. Adaline Blake is the daughter of the current Governor of New York, but she is the black sheep that was cast away years prior because she was “tarnishing” the reputation of the very crooked Governor. Adeline has reentered New York with a new look and name to help her remain unnoticed by not only her father, but by the press whom she despises. Robert hires Adeline thinking he will get damaging information on the Governor for the upcoming election, but he doesn’t count on falling for the disgraced daughter. Loved the story, loved the couple, loved everything about this very well written book. Very much worth the read.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book
This book is a quintessential Lauren Layne book. It’s all dreamy New York and sexy banter and I loved it. I read this one super fast cause it’s short, but also, it’s one of those books you just forget to put down.
I loved Robert and Addie. I loved that they communicated. When she finds out he’s been keeping something from her, she sticks around and waits for him to explain. That is so freaking refreshing!!! I loved how they were completely opposite but they brought out the best in each other.
I know some people were disappointed that LL’s last series was fade-to-black, and I’m here to tell you that this one will definitely not disappoint in that aspect. 😝😝
