This was not written for me. I appreciated hearing Tara's story but it came across as a little unrealistically simplified, which I struggle with. Great for folks with privilege who are looking for a nudge to make changes.
"Buy Yourself the Fcking Lilies" by Tara Schuster is a candid and humorous memoir that chronicles the author's journey of self-discovery and self-care. Schuster shares personal anecdotes and practical advice on how to prioritize one's well-being and cultivate self-love, drawing from her own experiences of overcoming challenges and learning to embrace her worthiness. The book is refreshingly honest and relatable, resonating with readers who may struggle with similar issues of self-esteem and self-care. However, some readers may find the author's writing style to be overly casual or irreverent, which could detract from the book's overall impact. Additionally, while Schuster's insights are valuable, they may not offer much new or groundbreaking wisdom for readers already familiar with the self-help genre. Overall, "Buy Yourself the Fcking Lilies" receives a three-star rating for its humor and authenticity, but falls short of higher acclaim due to its somewhat predictable advice and writing style.
Of course I was drawn to this book by the sassy title. Don't judge a book by its cover, title or edges right? Nevertheless, it was exactly how I expected it to be based on the cover. It's a self help book based on someone who's lived it. Take that for what its worth.
The biggest take away I got from this is how to stop, or rather, try to stop talking to myself negatively. It's something that most humans do far too often.
Having said this, just because one person lived it doesn't mean their advice will work for everyone. Some can relate, others wont. Take that for what its worth as well.
I've recommended this little gem, but in my opinion, it has a very selective audience.
I am constantly on the look out for new self help, keep me on my feet kind of books. This one reminded me a lot of another self help book about washing my face. It's a great reminder about self care, and just a general way to look at life. Good read for a 20-30s woman who is feeling depressed and a little lost in life.
But Yourself the F*cking Lilies was a enjoyable memoir. There were many take seats I can use in my own life.
I love the focus on self care as we all could do more for ourselves!!
I don’t feel so bad indulging in a Starbucks drink, as Tara says you won’t go broke because you bought the Lilies.
I can’t imagine the life Tara had growing up but I am thankful to hear she has many supportive people in her life.
I did find it a bit long and slow in some areas but still recommend!
I always enjoy when authors narrate their own audiobooks. I feel it gives it more of a relateable experience and you feel the emotion more.
I really enjoyed this read! It was funny and heartwarming, and it was the perfect read for me during the pandemic because, let’s be honest, we all needed some laughs and escape at that point! I hope to read more from Tara in the future!
I loved the title and the cover art for this book, I did not think I gained much more from reading it however. Hopefully it finds the correct audience, as I am sure someone needs to hear the message, I will be sure to ask fellow readers about it and if they have also read it and what their thoughts were, as I think it could be a great conversation starter.
Is this self-help?
Is this a memoir?
Whatever it was, I was not engaged.
(Here are some extra words to make this review 100 characters long.)
There are a lot of self-help books out there, but this was one where I listened to the audiobook (narrated by the author) and took so many notes while doing so that I had to go our and purchase my own copy despite being provided an ebook ARC from NetGalley. While I am well above the intended audience age for this book, it spoke to me because of some of the simple reminders we often forget, especially too much negative self-talk. It's so easy to listen to the negative voice in your head because it's the loudest, but Tara Schuster, but there are better ways to take care of ourselves. She touches on a variety of subjects, knowing she'll hit at least one that will speak to the reader, but she gives each one her attention. Nothing feels too fluffy or too positive.
I loved this! This part-memoir, part-advice book is so hilarious and accurate that I found myself laughing with every chapter. There are some really great nuggets of advice in each chapter as well. Perfect for ladies looking for something fresh and different.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dial Press for an advanced copy!
Solid book, that I liked, but did not love. It did provide a good reminder though that live is to be more than endured, but enjoyed. It gets hard to remember that during the grind of life, but I will really try to and remember it’s okay to actually do things to make myself happy. Thanks Tara and to the publisher for this review copy. 3 ⭐️.
I have to admit that I did not realize this was a self-help book when I requested it - I thought it was fiction. As a result, this one was not for me. I do think it is something that would resonate with some younger women though. Narration of audiobook was by the author and well done.
I was drawn to the book by the title, however I don’t believe I was the intended demographic. Maybe if I had picked it up about 10 years ago.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Random Publishing House for this ARC in exchange for my review.
I did not expect to love and be so deeply impacted by this book - perhaps it’s because it was written by a millennial. For once a self-help adjacent book that gave actionable, proven (for Tara) advice that wasn’t preachy.
self-help meets memoir. I really enjoyed this! it’s always a good reminder to live gratefully and love yourself - and buy the f*cking lilies. loved Tara’s voice and read this as if I was having a conversation with a friend. also - Tara is hilarious. highly recommend.
.
thanks NetGalley and The Dial Press for the ARC.
I was so excited to read this but unfortunately it just didn’t pull me in. A lot of times it feels like self-care and self-love are the new buzz words of the times. I’m all for a repackaging if it resonates with someone else another way. We all need this work.
I absolutely loved this novel! I still re-read chapters/sections to ground myself and implement little pieces of advice into my daily life. I have recommended this book to many friends who feel the same. Not all of the advice and rituals are applicable to everyone in their current stage of life, but there is something for everyone somewhere within the pages.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Honestly, I am kind of sick of the curse word title self-help books. That being said, I actually liked this book and found some good ideas in it and I might even buy my very own copy.
I requested this book from NetGalley based solely on the title. It is a self-help book written by a woman who had to re-parent herself. This book will make you laugh while talking about serious things but still delivers hope to people looking for it. She describes to readers her experiences; explains how she copes and offers tips on how the reader can navigate their own issues. Tara Schuster tells the story in such a way that you feel like your friends with her at girls’ night out discussing your troubles. What I loved about the book was the letter to the frenemy within, the titles of the chapters and the part about the tea. You will have to read for yourself to see what I mean.
Thanks to NetGalley, author Tara Schuster and Random House Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC of this book.
A lively and good self-help title, especially for twenty- and thirty-somethings who are at least middle class and are fine with profanity.
