As soon as I saw the title of this book, I wanted to read it. If you've ever told yourself "I'm not worth it" or "I don't deserve it", you will find the author's story helpful. I found this book to be very uplifting.
It is aimed at a particular type of person, more likely a woman than a man. If you've been told that you are not good enough, and you've believed it, this book was written for you.
I'm not sure what a man would make of this book. Many of her experiences, which she uses as illustrations to explain what not to do, will not be relatable for men.
That said, many women will relate well. And, this will help to show how the behaviors she describes are self-destructive.
I would highly recommend "Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies" as a self-help book. Since it is written in the first person, I found it to be much more helpful than similar books written by doctors.
Tara Schuster gives us her life story written as a self-help book. I don't tend to read self-help books but am happy I requested this.
The book touches on mental health issues, toxic relationships with friends and partners, and rituals that can help you be a better person in your life.
The book made me feel that I had a friend by my side who understood the things that I have been through.
Some of the things I took out of this book:
*Take whatever weird little opportunity you have and maximize the f*uck out of it.
*I've found that journaling can give you physical relief and peace.
* Be the heroine in your life, not the victim.
*Fake gratitude until you feel gratitude.
*Stop insulting yourself.
*Stop self- medicating it doesn't work.
*Buy yourself the fucking lilies, don't cheap out in yourself. You are worth the things that instantly makes your life better.
* It's not okay to spend money unconsciously on things that bring you zero joy.
*Make time for you
*Find what inspires you and cling for it
*Lifes is not a series of crises to de endured. Life is to be enjoyed.
* Create physical habits that work for you
*Do one kind thing for yourself daily.
* Fill your house with treasures, not stuff.
*Eat food that makes you feel good, not sick
* You can't control how other peoples treat you, but you can control what you accept.
*Your bonds are what gives your life meaning. Your relationship gives you strength.
*Don't waste another second on people who don't make your life better.
*You need someone who takes responsibility for their own life. End of story.

As someone who suffers with mental health issues, this book was such a treat! I could totally relate to a lot of what the author was talking about within this book and even found myself laughing at certain sections.
I definitely would recommend this one to those who enjoy self-help, want to learn more about mental health, or just wanting to read something different!
I really enjoyed the first half of this book and it really resonated with me. The second half fell flat. Maybe it was the writing style or maybe I just didn't get it.
This book had a lot of empowering advice that addressed the whole person and never seemed saccharine. I appreciated the authorโs stories and process. As a therapist, Iโm wary of books which are just mental health platitude. This book had some meat to it. I could tell the author had not come to writing the book in a short time but had lived and digested their own healing process. The title sets the tone for an empowering read.
Have you ever stood in front of the mirror, breathing deep, willing yourself to get your sh*t together? If yes, this book is for you. The twin sister to the girl who points her finger at you and hypes you up to get it done - Tara Schuster is here to point her finger at you, and hype you up to love yourself in practical ways. Because self care isn't just about face masks and bubble baths, but damn if that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy yourself the f*cking lilies anyway.
Definitely empowering, and a really quick and great read! This book hits on all of the feelings that women have as the come of age and mature - I truly enjoyed it and related to it!
A self-help book written as a memoir. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I gained anything new from it. I found some of it a bit repetitive.
Tara Schuster is my new hero. I devoured this book. Twice! In a row. This book is fully of funny and insightful anecdotes. It also has some no nonsense advice about giving up activities that you may like or love doing, but in reality aren't benefiting you or getting you to your ultimate goal or place in life. This book covers a multitude of subjects like goal setting, mental health, physical health, toxic relationship, and cleaning. I am proud to say that my apartment is now always DPR (dinner party ready). I really loved this book and know that I will be going back to it for years to come.

From the #netgalley description: "Brutally honest, often hilarious, hard-won lessons in learning to love and care for yourself from a young vice president at Comedy Central who was called โahead of her timeโ by Jordan Peele"

Buy Yourself the F*ucking Lilies by Tara Schuster is a self-help book like no other that I know. This book is about finding yourself, accepting yourself, prioritizing yourself, improving yourself, and - over all else - loving yourself. Schuster writes about re-parenting herself the way she was not parented but should have been the first time around. She describes exercises that help with the above mentioned goals and that will turn you into a "ninja of self-love" that transforms their mind, body and relationship.

While it sounds like it has big ambitions like any other self-help books, I promise it will feel a lot more personal and applicable than many others. It took me a long time to get through this book, not because it was terrible but because I realized that it was a lot more personal to me than I expected and I could not always face what I needed to face. But even during my breaks from reading this book, I found myself thinking about it often and using my favorite exercise that she taught me: my gratitude journal. It is an unofficial goal for me to repeat the things I am thankful for as little as possible and that has made it possible to really find the joy in the little things every day. Schuster tells many memorable stories about her life that show you why her exercises are important and how they can help. Some I find more interesting than others but I see the benefit of them all.

Thank you to the author, @netgalley and Random House for sending me an egalley in exchange for an honest review. I am glad to have been able to read this book.
Mixed emotions about this one. Some good advice and techniques. But, the delivery was distracting. Lots of ALL CAPS-run on sentences-hyphens/ and other unnecessary punctuation!!! Also, there were more than a few times when I felt like the author was trying to give advice that she was unqualified to give. Attending therapy for years does not make you a therapist. But, overall, it's worth a read, if you need some help getting through a rut in your life.
Absolutely hilarious and inspiring memoir. Women power, self love, and not taking any more B.S. Great gift for graduates!
This was an overall enjoyable read, even though it wasn't exactly the type of book I expected it to be - it feels more like a memoir than a self-help or self-improvement book. As a memoir, it's very entertaining and fun to read, and touches on many important topics of adult life that a self-help book would also mention - managing your emotions, your anxiety, appreciating your body the way it is... if you're looking for an American memoir filled with humor and helpful, if not new, advice, this is a nice book for you.
(Although, I do have to mention that I found the author's description of Le Marais as "a neighborhood full of winding paths and the most charmant boutiques" quite funny, considering the fact that Le Marais is actually Paris's official LGBTQ+ neighborhood)
I requested this book mostly based on the cover and title. I knew it would be a self-help style of book and I was interested to see what it was about. Some of it was things that wasn't really new and unique concepts. Others were good, but just not for me as I don't have a lot of negative talk. I would still recommend for friends.
I could not get into this book. I loved the opening, it grabbed the readers attention and set your expectations but the book never met them
Thank you so much for this ARC!
Definitely going to come back to this one when I am in a self help book mood! Sounds like a great outline of topics of covered!
Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies by Tara Schuster is an interesting blend of memoir and self-help that mostly focuses on the authorโs attempts to โre-parentโ herself after a messed up childhood. Using humor to get her points across, Schuster shares a variety of different methods for tackling anxiety and negative self-talk. Some of them are a tad frivolous (buy lilies, i.e. spend on indulgences), while others could genuinely be useful for someone who is struggling (how to make exercise a habit). Basically, it is an engaging book about self-care in all of its forms.
I chose this book because of the title. Itโs a quick read. My favorite chapter is My Home Office is a Sacred Sanctuary- Please do not come in. This chapter stuck out to me because as a small business owner I could relate to several parts. I like the idea of how she incorporates her goals into a visual on the wall.. Her quote โI take small , thoughtful actions every day in pursuit of the exact life I want to lead.โ Is a great reminder to strive for everyday. I could also relate to Keeping your House Dinner Party Ready but never thought of it that way before. I needed to read But the Lilies. I always look at the fresh flowers and never buy them, now I will.
This is a quality self help book!
Some of the chapters I find myself skimming through, and other I want to notate and highlight all over.
I really enjoyed this one!

This was a smart and hilarious look at someone who doesn't have it all together, but is smart enough to fake it. I thoroughly admire Tara Schuster and loved this look into her life.
