I really liked this thrilled but it was very predictable. There were some twists but no "GASP!" moment. Still sucked me in and I'd read more by the author.
This was a really good, dark psychological thriller. Nina Garrity's family was turned upside down when her husband Glen disappeared from his fishing boat. Nina is left behind to pick up the pieces and after two years have gone by, Simon has come into their lives and seems to be just the perfect man to fill the gap left by Glen. The oldest Child, Connor and Simon really connect, but daughter Maddie is not convinced. She sees a dark side to Simon and doesn't like or trust him. This book features the topics of spousal abuse and school bullying., This book is a quick, engaging read, although it took me to about the halfway point before I got truly invested in it. Overall an excellent book that I'd give 4 stars!
The New Husband by DJ Palmer is a psychological thriller which leads the reader on road of twists and turns as the story unravels to reveal the truth. Seventeen months prior, Nina Garrity’s husband, Glen, mysteriously disappeared while fishing. Presuming her husband to be dead, Nina has moved on. A new house and a new “husband.” Although she and Simon Fitch are married, they aren’t even engaged yet, they seemed to be on that path. While her 16-year-old son, Connor, welcomes the new relationship and the new changes, her 13-year-old daughter, Maggie, doesn’t. Still believing her father is alive, Maggie fights Simon’s intrusion at every turn and tries to get Nina to see what she sees but Nina just thinks Maggie is being a dramatic teenager. But soon things begin to happen that leads Nina to question everything she thought she knew about her husband’s disappearance and Simon’s past. What really happened to Glen? Was Simon involved? Will Nina find out the truth before it’s too late?
The New Husband is an exciting book which will keep you guessing. At first, I didn’t like the fact that the narrator would occasionally change as a new chapter begins; however, it soon became apparent why the author doesn’t give a warning. My suggestion is when you read the book, as a chapter opens, pay close attention to who is speaking. It is a very suspenseful and fast-moving book. Despite having 63 chapters, I was able to finish the book in a day. It held my attention that I did not want to put it down unless I absolutely had to! I didn’t care for Nina, first, because I felt she was moving on too quickly into a new relationship despite what she thought she knew about her husband’s disappearance. She should have waited a bit more before moving in with Simon. As I read, I wanted Nina to open her eyes and really listen to Maggie. I enjoyed Maggie’s side of the story more. Maggie was more than just a teenager who didn’t like the man who replaced her father in her mother’s life, he was a man she didn’t trust. I really enjoyed The New Husband and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys a thriller that will keep you guessing and on your toes until the end.
The New Husband
is available in hardcover, eBook and audiobook
I will start off by saying that if you like Criminal Minds or any show on Discovery ID then you will be all for this book. Simon appears to be the perfect boyfriend, maybe next husband but why does Nina feel like something is wrong. At first she tries to deny it but the more people she talks to the hard it is for her to brush somethings aside. You won't believe the lengths Simon goes to, to show he's the perfect partner.

Monsters come in all shapes and sizes. They perfect their mode of attack. No one sees them coming. The ones that do, can't get anyone to believe them. Maggie Garrity was in seventh grade when her world turned upside down. She saw the evil and no one believed her, except her new friend Ben Odell. Once the blinders come off, there is a rush to prove the evil. Do not ever mess with the family dog.
I found this book to be a fascinating psychological thriller. It was well written, and the characters were realistic and well developed. I also enjoyed the pace of the book. I liked it from the beginning, but once I got to the middle, I couldn’t put it down. I’m looking forward to reading more books from this author.

The New husband is a tense psychological thriller!
Nina's life is turned upside down when an officer knocks on her door and informs her that her husband's boat was found abandoned. There was a lot of blood present which could mean a number of scenarios. Two years have passed with no word on Glen's whereabouts or whether he's still alive, but the case is still open. Nina feels that there was an accident and he drowned. She and her two kids are ready to move on. She has a new love interest, Simon, and their commitment to each other progresses quickly and they buy a new house to all live together and start anew. Connor misses his father, but he was mostly unavailable for him. Simon on the other hand has ample time to spend with him. Maggie is in middle school and is very suspicious of Simon and small incidents start to happen to Maggie and she's sure Simon is behind it. Is she just being difficult and unable to adjust to the changes or is there some truth to her stories? Meanwhile, Nina is starting to see red flags in her relationship. Simon is becoming increasingly controlling about all aspects of her life. She knows in the pit of her stomach that something is off, but has a list of justifications for each new annoyance. When Nina starts to dig into his secretive past, she will unearth just how manipulative he can be.
This was a good read, full of thrills and wrapped up nicely.

But in fact is about a family, that any of us will eagerly want to succeed in everything they do.

One day a father took out his boat and went fishing and was suddenly missing, never to be found.
Did he have a heart attack, fall over in the water, was he attacked by a manic, fake his own death and disappear?
What did happen?
The police looked and people in the community had their own ideas.
This book had me from the 1st page or two and it will hit you the same way.

Please do yourself a favor and read this book, you'll be glad you did.
This book had me staying up till 4 in the morning so not only was this book great it hooks you and does not let you go. It has a shocking, mest up twist that left me with no words to describe it.
It started off with a man finding a boat with a dog on it, no one else on the boat but the dog and blood left behind on the floor of the boat. The scene then changes to Nancy, the wife of the man presumed dead after their dog Daisy was found alone on his boat. Leaving behind two teenage children as well, Nina is at a loss as she learns all her husband was hiding; the loss of a job from two years ago leaving them without money and an affair that Nina did not suspect.
Nina is understandably left vulnerable and without a way to keep her children afloat without the savings she had counted on. Enter Simon, the seemingly perfect teacher who one day arrives after having “found” Daisy who’d gotten out. In a whirlwind courtship that leaves both her friends and family shocked, Nina with her children and Simon move in together. After all, he says all the right things, gives the right gifts and is the “perfect guy”. Only Maggie, Nina’s teenage daughter seems to realize that all is not as it seems with this man, seeing a darkness within him that her mother believes is all the lies of a teenager.
This book makes you realize that there is no such thing as the perfect man, and even the most seemingly kind individual can hide an unending darkness within him. Nina and her children must go through hell and back before the twisted ending that personally left me in shock and wanting to read more.
I thought it was good. Nina's first husband Glen left cheated on her and kept secrets about his job loss 2 years prior and disappeared presumably faking his death. Nina's potential new husband, Simon appears to be too good to be true, everything is perfect, but Nina's daughter Maggie doesn't believe the hype. Her brother Connor and Mother Maggie, Nina feels are blinded by Simon and don't truly see the manipulative evil person she does. How will she get her mom to see. Turns out that most of the schemes Nina has in mind, Simon has already seen through and beaten her at the game. Nina starts to have doubts as well. Why are certain things about Simon reminiscent of Glen from his smell eventhough he has different cologne and other things in the back of her mind. Great twists and turns, really enjoyed the last 100 pages when things come to light and click for Maggie and Nina separately.
An amazing book that kept me up until the wee early morning hours. It was a little slow to begin with but once I got into the story I could not put it down. Told in numerous voices, I think Maggie was my favorite. i could feel her pain for what she knew and she could not share. Simon was wicked, too perfect to be true. If you like psychological thrillers, then this is a must read.
Wow...this book took me a bit of putting down and picking up. Partial blame due to a sudden surgery and recovery, but in the end it had me on the edge of my seat to see how it would end. Nina, Glen, Maggie, Conner and Simon all have great detailed lives in the book. You soon learn who to love, hate, who you want to yell at, who you want to shake and say wake up and who you hope they figure it out soon. I received this as an ARC read and its to hit the shelves on 4/14/20. If you are up for a suspense read be sure to pick this up.
This book was a thriller and had many twists and turns. I highly recommend the book to those into mysteries or crime books. 4.5/5
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. Here is my review:
Full disclosure: I didn't finish this book. I got to the 48% mark and gave up. If you have ever attended a melodrama play, you know how the villain is all sweetness and light with Little Nell, the heroine, but has asides to the audience, showing how evil he is? Well, this is the premise of this book.
Nina' s husband disappeared under mysterious circumstances: his fishing boat was found abandoned with only his dog inside and a large quantity of blood coloring the entire deck. Now, a year and a half later, Nina has found a new man, Simon, who serendipitously showed up one day, knowing all about her and her family, and even about their dog!! She has fallen in love with Simon and, to keep from having to move home and live in her parent's house with her son and daughter, has moved into a new, smaller house with Simon, her kids and the dog. The only problem with this idyllic existence is her daughter, Maggie, who despises Simon and does not trust him to be good for them, and especially for her mother. Then Nina gets information that her husband had been having an affair before he disappeared. And Simon suddenly has an emergency or a "surprise" for her every time she and her girlfriends plan a night out.
This is a trained psychologist, a counselor. And a complete idiot. Nina is so self-absorbed and doesn't see any red flags, does not believe her daughter who does, and is so needy she believes and accepts anything Simon tells her.
I just couldn't take it. About halfway through the book we find what is going on with Glen, the missing husband, after he contacts Maggie and warns her not to tell anyone he is alive and in contact with her. I have no idea what is going to happen and I don't care.
The New Husband has good tension, interesting characters, and a gritty storyline. The pacing is pretty steady overall with no serious lags along the way. Yet, it doesn't quite cross over from okay to really good. It does have a psychological element, and there are some decent twists. The problem is those twists are entirely too predictable. Don't get me wrong, the bad guy is sufficiently bad and creepy, and Nina is likable and easy to root for. That said, there isn't a single thing in this story that I haven't seen before. Whether it be in book form or in a movie or television show, this has been done and done again. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if there were something to set this one apart from the crowd, but there isn't. The book showed promise, and I kept reading, hoping to find something that I didn't see coming or that I hadn't seen before, but it just didn't happen. So, in the end, it's not a bad story, but it isn't a great one either.
I was so excited to read this book. It had a great cover, a great synopsis, and a lot of hype. Unfortunately, I did not love it. The first 20% of the book was so slow, and I just couldn't get interested in it. The characters were not easy to connect to and the story just trudged along at a snail's pace.
When the story finally picked up, I became extremely frustrated with the main character, Nina. She was extremely naive, and I just couldn't get passed how much she just overlooked.
Overall, this one did not work out for me, but I do know that a lot of people have really enjoyed it. I would recommend this for readers that enjoy thrillers that are a slow burn.
I was provided an advanced reader's copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
The New Husband by DJ Palmer is the second book that I’ve read by this author and I can say with confidence that I am a fan! When Nina’s husband mysteriously disappears with no explanation she is confused. Did something happen to him or was he just trying to leave her and start a new life. Her life hasn’t been easy so when the handsome and charming Simon enters the picture, she falls for him almost instantly. He seems to fit into Nina’s and her children’s lives perfectly until Maggie, Nina’s daughter, starts sensing that something about Simon isn’t quite right. Meanwhile, Simon has a way of being quite manipulative and tries turning the tables and places the blame for Maggie’s accusatory behavior on Nina’s new job, which he wishes he would leave. So is Maggie just upset because her father is missing or is she truly sensing something is amiss with Simon. The plot line of this book didn’t miss a beat! I couldn’t find a good
place to put my bookmark because I just
didn’t want to stop reading. I can’t wait for
the next DJ Palmer book to be released!
Nina’s husband disappeared almost 2 years ago, supposedly drowned. Simon, a teacher at her kids school steps in to support the family. He is very considerate and helpful, willing to pay all expenses on the new house they move into. Is Simon too good to be true? Only Ninas daughter,Maggie, senses something isn’t quite right with Simon. Is Maggie right or is Simon really as good as he seems. I couldn’t put this book down. Great story! I would give this book 4 1/2 stars. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Nina’s husband Glen has disappeared without a trace leaving her and her two children with only unanswered questions, a huge financial burden, and evidence of an affair..
So when Nina gets involved with Simon, her doubts about her financial situation and her missing husband begin to finally subside because he is seemingly her perfect match. But is he too perfect to be true? Nina’s 13 year old daughter Maggie isn’t convinced and sets out in her own for the truth about her new “daddy.”
For awhile this book seems like your average domestic thriller, repetitively relaying Simon’s hidden agenda of emotional abuse and control of Nina, and then it picks up speed and hits with a blast of twists and creepiness! I really liked the way the author played out the plot, given it a totally disturbing vibe once you’re involved!
The clutch for me was Maggie’s ending of the book for sure!
Thank you to NetGalley, DJ Palmer and St. Martins for an eARC one change for an honest review.
What a great twisted psychological thriller- full of dark creepy lies. I'll admit to being taken aback by the reveal. Mom Nina's chapters are written from third person POV, and teenage daughter Maggie's are in first person POV. I found the switch in POV style to be odd- typically when I read multiple POV books, they are presented in the same manner. I loved Maggie- she was a spunky girl and I adored seeing her build a new friendship with Ben at school. The second half of the book was the most fast-paced and zoomed by- I didn't want to put it down. What a wild ride!
