I received this book from NetGalley for review.
This book is about finding love after a betrayal but at what cost? Nina whose prior husband left her and her kids by simply disappearing. The proverbial went to the store and didn’t come back. Nina finds love again with Simon, but Simon is too perfect on the outside and things start to unravel.
I didn’t hate this book, but it wasn’t love either. It is not my normal genre of reading, but after falling in love with other mystery and thrillers I wanted to reach further.
This was a typical keep-you-guessing domestic/psychological thriller that I feel is targeted directly for my demographic. I've read so many books like this one, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. The only critique (a minor one) I have is fewer 'cliffhangers' would make the bigger ones more impactful.
This was a great read, fast paced and well-written. Nina's husband Glen has been living a double life and having an affair. But Nina can't confront him about this he is declared dead after a fishing trip gone wrong. A few years later, Simon enters the picture to give Nina everything she needs. But nothing is quite as it seems with Simon. I couldn't put this one down.
Wow, I did not want to put this book down!! I had a free weekend so put it to great use reading this new thriller by DJ Palmer and it did not disappoint! The character building was excellent and kept me on edge until the end! I don't want to give anything away but do you really know the one you love?? Read to find out!
I highly recommend this book and can't wait for DJ Palmer to release his next book!
I received this book as a hard copy from the publisher as well as a NetGalley ebook, I plan to pick it back up again someday, but I just couldn't push past the first few chapters. Good writing, but I can't connect to the characters.
There are lots of questionable decisions made in this book, and most of them are made by Nina, the female protagonist and mother of Connor and Maggie. Nina’s husband, Glen (the implied “old” husband of the title), disappears, leaving behind his boat and the family dog, both soaked in his blood, along with evidence of his infidelity. Less than two years later, Nina starts dating her kids’ social studies teacher and moves the whole family in with him, to the delight of Connor and the consternation of Maggie.
You can see the conflict coming fast and furious, and you think you know what’s going to happen. I thought I had it all figured out, but Palmer throws in a fabulous twist that upends everything you thought you knew. Even though I questioned many of Nina’s decisions, the pacing and plot keep the pages turning. A well-done domestic/suspense/thriller.
This book was okay. Thriller is not really my go to genre so that makes it slightly more difficult to rate. Was I entertained? Yes. Was it creepy? also Yes. Did I love it? No, not really. But I think that's more of a me problem then an actual book problem. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. I also flew through this book because I needed to know what was going to happen. Overall, if you like thrillers you might want to give it a go.
Somehow, I wasn't blown away by the plot of this thriller and gave it only 3 stars in Goodreads, neglecting to leave a review there.
I could not get into this book. Unfortunately I could not finish it. I wish I could. Ddddddddddddddddddddddddd
My first dabble with this author, and I don't really know how to feel about it.
First of, the book starts out with laying out everything (basically) right from the beginning. It is so obvious, that even the daughter knows what's up. The problem is, somehow Nina, our MC is still enthralled and doesn't see what's happening right under her nose.
Nina's husband disappears, presumed dead. And he has left a financial mess and a trail of lies behind. Nina can't get closure, but somehow meets this perfect guy, Simon, and falls in love. After they move in together, the little obsession and perfection of his starts to become red flags, that Nina's daughter Meg, Nina's friends, even therapist start to notice. But Nina doesn't really believe that Simon could be evil.
Not sure what the point of the book was, if not for Nina to figure out her life. It was dragged out. I feel like all the red flags she should have noticed right away, and done something about it. But as the epilogue explains, you can't blame the victim (I guess, *insert eye roll*).
I listened to this as an audio, but if I would have read this as a physical copy, it would have been too slow. Definitely more of a suspense of will she figure it out or won't she. But there's no big tension.
Will have to try another book by this author to figure out if it's a style or if it was this plot.
This was an enjoyable, quick read. The writing style was nice and the ending was a surprise. I feel the twist was executed quite well, I would recommend this if you’re a fan of domestic thrillers!
Nina knows firsthand that people lie. When her husband goes missing and a new man enters her life, she is wary about letting anyone new into their lives. She must protect her and her daughter from any more heartache. Can she let a new man into their lives, or will everything fall apart.
The New Husband was a mysterious domestic thriller. From the beginning, you know something strange is going on. I love how we get the viewpoints from both the daughter and the mother. Just enough mystery to not know what is going to happen next, yet enough is known that you can hate the bad guy.
The writing wasn't for me, and I was looking forward to this one since I loved The Perfect Daughter. Nina was ridiculous.

Nina Garrity is finally getting a second chance at love.
After her husband disappears from a fishing boat somewhere in Vermont, Nina is working to pick up the pieces of her life when in walks Simon Fitch, the charismatic social studies teacher who wins her heart by returning the family's beloved dog. Not only is he an animal lover, but Simon is loving and warm, all the things Glen Garrity was not. Simon is even willing to support Nina financially after she learns that Glen has left her nearly broke.
But is Simon as wonderful as he seems? Nina's daughter Maggie doesn't think so. She's had her suspicions of Simon from the start and moving in with him hasn't helped any. Desperate to prove to her mother that Simon isn't as great as he seems, Maggie embarks on a secret campaign to get Simon to show his true colors while Nina quietly begins to question some of Simon's behavior herself. Though she's hesitant to believe Maggie, there are little niggling doubts about her seemingly perfect relationship.
The premise of this book was decent but the writing left a little to be desired. I struggled with the writing and some of the plot structure that, at times, seemed somewhat unbelievable as well as being a bit rushed. When the conclusion was finally revealed it felt like there were too many unanswered questions to have made it an enjoyable read. However, it was a quick read, great for a weekend or a beach day.
This was my first D.J. Palmer book and WOW! I'm a fan. This book was creepy, suspenseful, and riveting. I couldn't stop reading it. When Nina's husband mysteriously disappears and she finds out more than she bargained for of his previous life, Simmon slides right in. He is perfect. But is he just a bit too perfect? This twisty thriller kept me on the edge of my seat. Thank you, NetGalley for the eARC. 4 stars
I am sorry for not reviewing fully but I don’t have the time to read this at the moment. I believe that it wouldn't benefit you as a publisher or your book if I only skimmed it and wrote a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for not fully reviewing!
This was one wild ride. A family who experiences a major traumatic change gets a seemingly new start. The mother moves on to a new man, and things seemed to fall into place rather quickly. What happened next moves rapidly, and I was left finding time to read this every day.
I would definitely suggest this book!

DNF - The writing style was so clunky and slow, I couldn’t get into this, and I couldn’t deal with allllll the red flags being ignored every second. This one wasn’t for me.
This book had me turning pages quick! It was gripping and disturbing. The whole time I was left wondering, how can this woman not see what's going on in front of her. Domestic Thrillers are some of my favorites and this one didn't disappoint. I'm so glad I found this author last year!
