This description sucked me right in.... I always love a good “secret life” story. Nina’s husband has gone missing - and she finds out he was living a double life. Eventually she ends up coming to terms with it, and moves on. Her relationship with a new man begins to get serious, but her daughter doesn’t trust this guy. Told from both Nina’s point of view as well as her daughter’s, the reader begins to question this new man as well, but you don’t know WHY. Is the new husband too good to be true?

My first low star in a very long time...we can’t love them all!

****Mild spoilers ahead****

This was difficult to get through at times, so I did a lot of skimming to get to the end.
Outside of the predictability, this is a book where all expectations of reality need to be let go and just pretend this scenario could play out as it does IRL.

There were some mixed messages with the characters that bothered me as well. Nina is presented as strong, confident and together, yet apparently dumb as a box of rocks to get herself in the situation she does. Glen is presented as driven and hardworking yet unable to function when things fall apart. I will leave Simon alone...he was a combination of every antagonist out there thrown together in one pot and stirred.

I wanted to like this, but it was really all over the place for me.

As you can see by the higher ratings, others have had much better luck. I hope you are one of them.

I really enjoyed D.J. Palmer’s previous release Saving Meghan so I was super excited to receive an advance copy of The New Husband. Like some other reviews mention, I found that the first portion of the book was slow moving. Things pick up considerably in the second half of the book with twists that will keep readers guessing and glued to the pages until the end.

A new house, a new neighborhood, a new “boyfriend” for mom, but nothing but hatred for Maggie.

Having Simon, the new boyfriend, move in with them wasn’t something Maggie liked because she extremely disliked him. She just wasn’t comfortable around him and felt something was not quite right.

Since her father was never found after a boating accident, things had been rough, but this seemed worse.

As the days go on, Maggie sees more things happening that seem like control on Simon's part.

Why can’t her mother see this especially since Simon always said subtle things indicating that her mother shouldn’t go back to work because she couldn’t handle the house and a job.

As we look back, Maggie's father wasn't much better since he had been lying to her mother as well.

As we get to know the characters more…

1. Nina needed to wake up and listen to her daughter.

2. Connor needed to be more aware of what was going on.

3. Maggie needed to keep questioning her impressions of Simon.

4. And Simon needed to leave.

Can you tell I didn't like Simon? He was such a manipulator.

I kept wondering and worrying about what his real plan was and what he was going to do next.

Tension, ill will, subtlety, lies, and suspense abound in THE NEW HUSBAND.

The tension throughout the book was very strong but the ending tension was so strong, you will be talking out loud to the characters and having your blood pressure rise. 5/5

This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"The New Husband" was a surprising thriller. I've never read anything by D.J Palmer but this was a definitely well written story. I enjoyed Miller's writing style.

The New Husband, the second novel I’ve read by Palmer, has him becoming an author I’ll need to stalk! I mean, search Amazon and Goodreads accordingly, for the next new book :)

Nina Garrity’s husband Glen is presumed dead. A year and a half after the accident, Nina considers herself a widow, even though the police never found a body. Following a chance encounter with Simon Fitch, a teacher from her daughter Maggie's middle school, Nina finds love again and has hopes of putting her shattered life back together. But it’s never that easy is it? This is a thriller after all!

The New Husband is intense throughout despite certain mysteries being solved for the readers fairly early on. However, I kept turning the pages because while the reader has the answers, the characters in the story do not. I needed to know how it would all be revealed and how the cast of characters would react.

I really did enjoy this book, but thought that things came together a little too quickly in the end. There was one question I would have liked a solution to. It’s not a major plot line, but one I would have liked resolved because I simply don’t like not knowing for certain.

The New Husband has left me eagerly looking forward to Palmer’s next book. If thrillers are your thing, then add this book to your list immediately!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Early one morning, a fisherman comes across a boat empty except for a barking dog and a lot of blood. A search ensues but the owner of the boat, Glen Garrity, is never found.

Leaving behind a wife, Nina, and two kids, Maggie and Connor, the Garrity family must continue their lives without knowing if their father is alive or dead. In searching for clues about her missing husband, Nina uncovers some shocking truths - Glen was out of work for over two years before he went missing and he was having an affair.

Simon Fitch enters the Garrity’s lives at the perfect time. A middle school teacher with private wealth, Simon embodies everything Nina could want in a man. He’s kind, intelligent, ready for commitment, attentive to her needs, and wonderful with children. Though Glen has only been out of their lives for a little over a year, Nina allows herself to move on with Simon. They buy a home together and try to become a family. Connor connects with Simon in a way he never connected with his own father, but Maggie is more skeptical.

Does Maggie see a hidden darkness in Simon or is she a hormonal teen making up stories? Was Glen murdered or did he run off with his mistress? If Simon seems too good to be true, maybe he is.

How well do we know the people we meet? In today's world where so much info can be obtained about us, before we even meet, how do you know that the people you meet don't have ulterior motives? In this thriller (perfect for self-quaranteened reading), the reader connects with Nina- as a single mother, trying to find someone to help her get past the horros of her husband's lies, and helps her kids move on and live again. But as Nina comes back to herself, she realizes she may have put her entire family in danger, and lies have a way of boomeranging back and causing more harm. This is a tight thriller, sure to be headed to the big screen, so don't miss this one (there are 8 more you missed)!

The New Husband is a standard "new boyfriend worries children, then adults" thriller. And that's fine and can be fun but in The New Husband the setup is painfully obvious and Simon could only be more evil if he had a mustache to twirl. As something to read while you're at the doctor or airport or whatever it's okay, but if you're looking for a coherent plot or character motivations that make sense (see: all the main adult characters), this isn't going to be your cup of tea. Fast, forgettable, and ultimately hollow.

These are my thoughts now. I will publish my full review closer to the pub date.

I thought this book was very predictable. You know Simon's the bad guy, I was actually hoping that there would be a big twist and he wouldn't be the bad guy, but that didn't happen.

To me this book was too long. Speed it up! There was way too much in-between, things that were not important.

I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it. I so much enjoy psychological thrillers but this one was so different in a way that you found out in the middle of the book who was behind things where you normally get hid with the surprises at the end. There were still things that had me guessing. Nina's husband disappeared and she met someone new and started a new life with him and her two children. But all is not as perfect as it seems.

DJ Palmer has an excellent thriller in The new Husband! Nina’s husband Glen has disappeared. She’s pretty sure he just ran off and left her and their kids. He was never much of a husband or father. Presented with evidence that he had an affair she’s sure that he just left them. Two years later Nina is getting ready to move her family in with Simon. He’s a teacher at her daughter’s middle school and they have a wonderful relationship. However, not everyone is crazy about Simon. Nina‘s daughter Maggie hates him and thinks he has an evil side. Nina’s son Connor thinks he’s great and hopes for him to be his new stepdad. Told in alternate viewpoint chapters, the story of what really happened and what Simon is up to is revealed. This was a chilling tale and it really gave me the creeps. Believe me when I say you won’t see this one coming! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Wow!! D.J Palmer has done it again. Sucked me into get another 5 star read of hers.

A woman scorned, left alone with 2 kids to raise on her own.
When a man comes into her life, maybe a tad to soon, after what she just went through, but when you feel like it was destiny you go with the flow. Little did she know, it would turn her life into a living nightmare.

This book is a must read, it will become available 4/14/2020. Trust me when I say, “you’re going to want to have this added to your tbr stack”

Fantastic! I loved this book! Full of twists, turns and secrets! Did not see most of the twists coming! Can't wait to read more!

I enjoyed reading this book, although sometimes I get frustrated with women characters that choose suspicious men. I think that's my own prejudice though. The writing is great and it kept me entertained! If you enjoy a good, face-paced read, I recommend this book!

The New Husband is a thrilling psychological thriller about a woman who finds love with a man who could be a psychopath. Expect the unexpected with each page you read never knowing what will happen next.

I found the beginning to be slow but once I hit the middle of the book it was like the plot exploded.... In a good way. You could tell something was off with Simon, but there was so much more going on. I loved all the twists and turns. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

It took me a while to get into this story, but once it did, I was hooked. This story of mind control, abuse, and obsession was a pretty exciting thrill ride once it took off. Some of the story seemed eerily familiar to another book I’ve read (possibly The First Mistake by Sandie Jones), but it does break off on its own, completely different, psycho story. I liked how the book focuses on many different aspects of emotional abuse without being too overly obnoxious about it.

I was worried that the ending would spoil the rest of it, but I actually enjoyed the closure and the way things come to a close in this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc for my honest opinion.

I was very eager to read this latest novel by D.J. Palmer. Unfortunately I was not blown away. I found the book to be very predictable and filled with a bunch of characters I didn’t like. I am obviously in the minority on this, but I just didn’t find it exciting.
